The O'Leary Review Podcast - James Newcomb - Episode 13

The O’Leary Review Podcast

Guest: James Newcomb

December 10, 2022

We welcomed James Newcomb to the show. James is an internet marketer, podcaster, and keen trumpeter.

Check out James:

Ba Vojdaan!

JNS Media (Sign up for his email newsletter)

Podcast Artistry™

Trumpet Dynamics

“Always be serious. Never take yourself too seriously.”

James referenced General Douglas MacArthur’s speech to the cadets of the U.S. Military Academy from May 12, 1962.

https://youtu.be/_42_aLGkRpg

Tom Woods School of Life

James and I are both members. Go to https://tomschooloflife.com/ to get on the waiting list. I recommend joining the school.

John Birch Society

James once worked for the perennially and unduly maligned John Birch Society.

William F. Buckley, Jr., seen by a good many Americans over the last several decades as the paragon of American conservatism, was anything but that. Buckley and his magazine, National Review, were “purgers.” Over the course of National Review’s history, the Buckleyites purged portions of the conservative movement for not falling in lock-step with the magazine’s ideology.

Ideology is an interesting topic when it comes to politics or political discourse. It is harmful. We could get into a long discussion on why ideology is so antithetical to moral order, but I shall just point you toward Brad Birzer’s quick article “Russell Kirk on the Errors of Ideology.”

Birzer wrote an extensive biography on Kirk, ironically one of the founders of National Review and who wrote for the magazine for years, but was then…purged. Kirk’s reputation has been somewhat resuscitated by some over at NR in the nearly 3 decades since his passing, but his idea of conservatism is definitely at odds with the bunch who run the show over there at this stage.

Here’s a video of Birzer talking about his book, Russell Kirk: American Conservative. https://youtu.be/8kn9RdM6gks

This is a long way of getting to the point that the John Birch Society was not on the “3 x 5 card of approved opinion” set forth by our cultural betters at the National Review, a magazine that has also purged other heroes of mine—namely Patrick J. Buchanan and Dr. Paul E. Gottfried—from their silly “movement” that has ceased to be “conservative.”

Tom Woods 100

Tom Woods—as far as I’m aware—coined the aforementioned “3x5 card of approved opinion” phrase. It is beautiful and explains so much about our world today.

Tom is also a mentor to both James and me.

Perhaps not so coincidentally, one of the goals of this program is to get at least 100 people within the Tom Woods orbit on the podcast. “Tom’s orbit” is loosely defined, but in our case, James is number 10. Ninety to go!

TomWoods100

Ron Paul presidential campaigns

We talk a little about the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns of Dr. Ron Paul.

I did not mention the essay I contributed to a book called

The O'Leary Review - Episode 12 - Andronikos - Journey through the Western Canon

The O’Leary Review Podcast

Andronikos

December 4, 2022

A reminder, the Substack page has the most thorough show notes with all the live links. Please join us at https://briandoleary.substack.com/

We’re talking about the “Classics” of literature today… it leads to a great discussion and is certainly a “conversation that matters.”

Our guest today, Travis—a.k.a. Andronikos—writes a blog called Wends of Change at https://wendsofchange.substack.com and wrote a book called Revenge and its Discontents: My Journey Through the Iliad which is available on Amazon (the Kindle edition is free with Kindle Unlimited).

In his daily life, Travis enjoys reading, writing, bowling, and video games. As Andronikos, he is “on a journey through the great books of the Western Canon.” His goal is to “read and think deeply about them with as little help from outside sources as possible.”

The Great Books Reading List that Andronikos is working his way through can be found at https://wendsofchange.com/books/

Book mentioned:

How to Read a Book by Mortimer Adler

Essay mentioned:

“On the Reading of Old Books” by C.S. Lewis

From the Lewis essay: “There is a strange idea abroad that in every subject the ancient books should be read only by the professionals, and that the amateur should content himself with the modern books… The error is rather an amiable one, for it springs from humility. The student is half afraid to meet one of the great philosophers face to face. He feels himself inadequate and thinks he will not understand him. But if he only knew, the great man, just because of his greatness, is much more intelligible than his modern commentator.”

Commentary from Annie Holmquist at Intellectual Takeout on the Lewis essay.

Andronikos

The nom de plume derives from a fellow mentioned in Romans 16:7

“Salute Andronicus and Junias, my kinsmen and fellow prisoners: who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.” Romans 16:7 (Douay-Rheims)

Tom Woods 100

For no reason other than I am involved in the Tom Woods School of Life, I decided that I’d get 100 of my fellow members or people closely tied into Tom’s orbit on this podcast eventually. Travis/Andronikos is a fellow member.

After this week, we will only have about 90 to go!

Enrollment in Tom’s School of Life comes around every six months or so. Go to https://tomschooloflife.com/ … totally worth it. I’m planning to have a podcast episode dedicated entirely to Tom’s School in the near future.

TomWoods100

Travis found out about Tom Woods via Michael Malice, who is a very failed podcaster and writer in his own right. Chain reaction led him to Tom.

Podcasts mentioned:

Your Welcome with Michael Malice

The Tom Woods Show ep. 2245 with Michael Heise

The Brion McClanahan Show — “Think Locally. The Brian D. O'Leary Show - November 18, 2022 - Deconstructing the Myth of the Spanish Civil War and how it informs us today

The Brian D. O’Leary Show

November 17, 2022

We are in the second week of our daily shows. This week we’ve been tackling the monster topic of the Spanish Civil War.

Continuing the discussion from earlier in the week, we reference an article in this month’s Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture.

The Myth of the Spanish Civil War. One of the last great leftist myths of the 20th century is that the Spanish Civil War was a struggle of republican democracy against nationalist fascism. In reality, it was a violent mass-collectivist revolution put down by Spanish moderates and conservatives. By Stanley G. Payne

We’ve been told that the major myth surrounding the Spanish Civil War…that it was a struggle against “fascism.” Hint: that’s not at all what the war was about.

We will put a bookmark in our discussion of the Spanish War on Friday and introduce a new topic next week.

I hope to have more resources of what we talked about this week soon enough. We will publish a newsletter in the next few days on this subject, so if you are looking to delve into this subject deeper, remember to join us at my Substack page: https://briandoleary.substack.com/

Go to https://chroniclesmagazine.org/ for the articles.
The Brian D. O’Leary Show

November 17, 2022

We are in the second week of our daily shows. This week we’ve been tackling the monster topic of the Spanish Civil War.

Continuing the discussion from yesterday’s show, we reference an article in this month’s Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture.

Today we talk more about fascism and how it may be defined. We reference books by Paul E. Gottfried (Fascism: The Career of a Concept) and Stanley G. Payne (Fascism: Comparison and Definition & Franco and Hitler: Spain, Germany, and World War II).

Professor Payne wrote the article we’ve been talking about all week. Professor Gottfried is the editor-in-chief of Chronicles.

We will put a bookmark in our discussion of the Spanish War on Friday and introduce a new topic next week.

Go to https://chroniclesmagazine.org/ for the articles. The Brian D. O'Leary Show - November 16, 2022 - Fascism & Antifascism

The Brian D. O’Leary Show

November 16, 2022

We are in the second week of our daily shows. This week we’ve been tackling the monster topic of the Spanish Civil War.

Longer show than normal today, clocking in right around 40 minutes. We like to have these daily shows a bit shorter…at 20-30 minutes, but we went overtime today. Please accept the apologies of the staff and enjoy the show in the meantime.

Continuing the discussion from yesterday’s show, we reference an article in this month’s Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture.

The major myth surrounding the Spanish Civil War…that it was a struggle against “fascism.” Hint: that’s not at all what the war was about.

Today we dive into what fascism is and what it is not. We also delve into the topic of “antifascism” so-called.

The rest of this week will be devoted to analysis of this article and will get into some parallels we see between the lead-up to the Spanish War and our culture today. It is analogous, but certainly not one-for-one.

Go to https://chroniclesmagazine.org/ for the articles. The Brian D. O'Leary Show - November 15, 2022 - Myths of the Spanish Civil War

The Brian D. O’Leary Show

November 15, 2022

This is the second show of the second week in our new daily podcast. We’ve shelved the idea of livestreaming these shows…for the time being.

Brian will talk about that on a future episode…logistically it works better for everyone at this point to do a podcast without a live element. That may change in the future. We welcome feedback from our listeners on this as well.

One of the beautiful things about podcasting is that it is NOT live… It’s not radio, it’s podcasting.

Continuing the discussion from yesterday’s show, we tackle an article in this month’s Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture.

The major myth surrounding the Spanish Civil War…that it was a struggle against “fascism.” Hint: that’s not at all what the war was about.

The rest of this week’s shows will be devoted to analysis of this article and will get into some parallels we see between the lead-up to the Spanish War and our culture today. The O'Leary Review - Ep 10 - Haley Heathman - Liberty Alliance Network

Haley Heathman grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana and went to DePauw University where she played tennis and was a three-time All-American and an NCAA finalist in doubles. She was elected to the DePauw University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Other DePaw Hall of Famers include:

Buzzie Bavasi — longtime baseball executive (Dodgers, Padres, Angels). Played baseball for the DePauw Tigers.

Ford Frick — Former president of the National League. Third Commissioner of Baseball. Played baseball at DePauw.

Dan Quayle — Former Vice President of the United States and former United States Senator from Indiana. Golfer at DePauw.

Mark Rolfing — Former PGA Tour pro. Longtime golf commentator. Eight years as head coach of the Celtics. Four basketball letters, playing in all of the Tigers games during his career. Graduated before Haley, but inducted into the school’s hall of fame after her.

Dick Tomey — Longtime college football head coach, notably at Hawaii, Arizona, and San Jose State. Played baseball at DePauw.

Haley had a career as a luxury yacht stewardess for nearly a decade and eventually got out of that line of work and immersed herself in the culture of hunting. This new passion culminated in Haley writing a book entitled, Hunt It, Clean It, Cook It, Eat It: The Complete Field to Table Guide to Bagging More Game, Cleaning It Like a Pro, and Cooking Wild Game Meals Even Non-Hunters Will Love.

Haley now lives in Florida and runs the Liberty Alliance Network and is the host of the What Can We Do? podcast.

Tom Woods

TomWoods100 (My goal is to get 100 people within the “Tom Woods orbit” on the podcast…then we’ll talk to Tom all about it.)

Haley has followed Tom’s work since about 2011 after finding out about the great Ron Paul in 2010.

Says The Revolution: A Manifesto by Ron Paul was an “instant lightbulb. The O'Leary Review - Ep 9 - The Penn State Case w/ John Ziegler

Over the last week and a half, we’ve been fielding a lot of questions about a segment of our podcast that takes on the dominant narrative surrounding the “Penn State Case.”

I am not interested in in appearances, as I often say. I am concerned with the truth. The Sandusky case is not something I had any desire in learning about, but once I scratched the surface, it began a deep-dive into the facts and the narrative surrounding the case.

I’ve written about it in the past…taking a position as I have—which unfortunately appears to be the only reasonable position—is an easy way to get one shunned from polite society.

So here is my challenge: just listen to the show. You may not want to. You may think it will creep you out…it very well could. But this is an important story and it goes much deeper than a man’s guilt or innocence.

It exposes the cultural rot that exists within this society…and its cause is probably the opposite of what most people have been told.

We have a corporate media structure that exists in today’s culture comprised—almost entirely—of truly unimpressive people. These people jump to rash conclusions either out of sheer ignorance or wonton political—read: leftist—motivations.

I don’t know how we fight back against it, but I believe that being aware of the problem is a good place to start.

Part of my initial strategy for building awareness—even in the last show notes page—was to send you back to Episode 77 of Sportlanders the Podcast, which I called “the most important podcast” we’d done up until that point…and start from there.

Human nature is such that people would rather insult me than go through the effort of hunting down an old podcast—a task which was not difficult, as I gave the link right in the show notes.

Thus, after a rash of BS heading my way, my tactics changed.

What we did is compile our material on the case into one single show, edited for clarity and relevance.

We encourage you to start here. Today.

This “2-in-1 podcast” is designed to help you get the basics of what is going on with this case and to ultimately go and listen to John Ziegler’s epic podcast series With the Benefit of Hindsight.

Meanwhile, we are praying that all our friends in Florida, the Carolinas, and the rest of the eastern seaboard are safe after the hurricane. In fact, we had to reschedule a podcast because of the hurricane earlier this week.

So, for today, my team cobbled together a “starter kit podcast” for the Penn State–Paterno–Sandusky case as it stands right now.

The foremost expert on the case is John Ziegler, who we’ve had on the show twice so far—once in February and once again in September. You can find those shows in our archives, if you need to, but the whole shootin’ match is right here for you.

Go to BrianDOLeary.com for all of those resources and to sign up for our daily newsletter and to be notified whenever new podcasts are launched.

Today’s episode consists of the two interviews, slightly edited for time and clarity … yet this program you are about to listen to still runs at over two hours.

The first part of the program you will hear in a moment was from Episode 77 of Sportlanders the Podcast. The second part was a conversation from within Episode 8 of The O’Leary Review Podcast.

Part one is probably what I call a “survey” of the case.

John came on the podcast with me in February when I was still very wet behind the ears on the subject and after I had recently finished his podcast series, which is the best resource for the case. You’ll hear us mention it several times throughout this show.

Go over to John’s podcast with Liz Habib—With the Benefit of Hindsight—and there you’ll get the whole story. But there is also several…

The O'Leary Review - Episode 8 - John Ziegler

Mega podcast for you. Two hours of content.

We talk PGA vs LIV golf, college football, and step back into “The Penn State Case.”

We’ve provided some links and a bit of commentary for you. The main show notes page will be updated at

https://briandoleary.substack.com/podcast

Search for John Ziegler - With the Benefit of Hindsight when you get to that page. It should be Episode 8 of The O'Leary Review Podcast.

This podcast is definitely a "conversation that matters" …

John Ziegler is a documentary filmmaker, author, Emmy-winning commentator, podcaster, former radio talk show host and television sportscaster, and was called “An American Hero,” by former Penn State president Graham Spanier in an inscription of his book The Lion’s Den. This description is mocked by Ziegler’s wife and kids.

John was last with us in February on episode 77 of Sportlanders the Podcast when we spoke for over 90 minutes on the Penn State-Joe Paterno-Jerry Sandusky scandal that emerged in November 2011.

John’s podcast, which he hosts with Liz Habib, called With the Benefit of Hindsight is over 60 hours of detailed reporting on the case.

In this podcast series, “The truth about what happened at Penn State has been locked in a vault for ten years — you’ve just been given the key.”

You can find everything relating to the podcast at FramingPaterno.com

Other than his tireless reporting on the truth in the Penn State debacle, which includes a 2012 documentary called The Framing of Joe Paterno, Ziegler is most well- known for his second feature documentary film called Media Malpractice which covered the 2008 presidential election.

Ziegler is an alumnus of Georgetown University and grew up in Pennsylvania, though with no direct ties to Penn State University.

LIV Golf issue

The LIV is in the process of ruining pro golf. It will eventually—both directly and indirectly—destroy the essence of professional golf.

The PGA Tour

The Tour went a long way in setting us back when it came to its response to the covid situation.

Professional golf is a sport that is uniquely designed to change people’s lives. Competing in LIV does not do that.

The Saudis have not created a new market. It is an “artificial stimulus.” A “kamikaze” attack on an American institution perhaps.

Golf, to be compelling, must have an element of fear. When everyone becomes super-rich, there’s nothing to fear.

Tiger Woods (& Rory McIlroy) role in the PGA Tour … Is the Tour becoming cartelized? The golf media won’t ask the questions because it is terrified of Tiger Woods.

Does the sport of golf need professional golf to thrive or even survive?

College football

Sports have contributed to the cultural decline over the last two-and-a-half years. This much is clear.

Pro golf, college and pro basketball, and college football all had the chance to step up and be leaders in the culture and stand up to the crazy policies implemented by the covid regime, but none of them did. Every other sports organization and league across the world were cowardly as well.

How and why did this happen?

The cancellation of the 2020 Ivy League basketball tournament started the ball rolling…

“College football no longer exists.”

Winning the National Championship is now…

Ep 7 - The O'Leary Review - Guest: Sean Kennedy - Simbiotrek

As the Founder and President of Simbiotrek (sim-bē-ˈä-ˈtrek), Sean Kennedy wears many hats. Sean’s roles include:

transformation strategist and catalyst

fractional COO for small- and medium-sized businesses

small business peer advisory board coordinator and chair

Sean works with entrepreneurs and business owners to unlock the potential trapped by the structure and capacity of their current business organization, and to build beautiful businesses together.

Sean has 20+ years of experience in software development. He’s primarily concerned with Agile and Lean software, of which he is a practitioner, coach, strategist, and digital transformation leader.

We delve into Sean’s role in “digital transformation” and much more.

Sean’s clients range from:

Multinationals to startups

In the Americas to over in Europe and Asia

Within the aerospace and automotive industry to industrial automation and insurance into health care, retail, technology, and telecommunications…he runs the gamut.

Tom Woods

TomWoods100

TomWoods.com

TomSchoolofLife.com

My goal is to get at least 100 people within the Tom Woods orbit on this show. We are building steady. Sean is the 5th person within Tom’s orbit to come on the pod…

First, if you don’t know who Tom Woods is, you’ve probably been living under a rock, but Tom is a benefactor of mankind…and to my intelligence level. Check out TomWoods.com for a firehose worth of great content and then work your way to TomSchoolofLife.com.

We need to keep the momentum going for this #TomWoods100 series. (And I apologize to Tom if I hijacked a hashtag he wanted &/or needed for another project…but I don’t think so.)

The point is—The O’Leary Review provides a platform for serious people to get the word out on what they are doing to make this world better.

Also— our mission is to fight back against the crazy in this world. It exists all around us and we must eliminate it.

How I met Sean.

I met Sean a few weeks back when he facilitated an accountability group within the Tom Woods School of Life that I am a part of.

“Blah blah blah…Austrian Economics…blah blah blah… I know nothing about that stuff.”

Well, you should find out. And we provide a platform here—at least on the last few shows—where you can now jump on the Austrian train with relative ease.

Over the last few podcasts, we’ve talked a bit about Austrian Economics and have provided resources in the various show notes.

The following talk, however, is also worth your time if you have any inkling to discover more about why one should pursue Austrian Economics in even its basic forms. You’ll likely discover that economics is indeed a field worth studying or exploring.

“The Attractiveness of Austrian Economics” by Tom Woods from July of 2013.

https://youtu.be/DStLhWMRERM

More About Sean

Lives in the Raleigh-Durham area after moving down from Toronto. Simbiotrek’s office is in “Wake Forest.”

Wake Forest, the town, is in the Raleigh-Durham area, also called the Research Triangle…not—as I found out doing a little cursory research—near Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. About a 2-hour car ride away!

Notable son of Wake Forest: Bryce Love, former Stanford running back who had a phenomenal junior season at The Farm (Doak Walker Award, Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year, Unanimous All-American, etc.). Attended Wake Forest-Rolesville High School.

Love had one great college seas…

The O'Leary Review - Episode 3 - Sean Edrington

Continuing our series on entrepreneurship, we had Sean Edrington on the podcast today. Sean has a unique story. He’s an aggressive entrepreneur, using the Substack platform in a way that not many do…

Sean also started The Swing Trading Club a few years ago…and that has another interesting backstory.

SEAN EDRINGTON

@EdringtonSean on Twitter

https://linktr.ee/seanedrington

Our guest, Sean Edrington, emailed me a few weeks ago wondering if we could work together on a project.

We both have newsletters submitted to The Sample, a pretty remarkable website that curates “articles from hundreds of blogs and newsletters and send you the ones that match your interests.” Over 10,000 readers.

The Sample

This whole collaboration was new to me…

Sean said he was new to the cross-promotion thing. I am also, even though I mention and link to different newsletters and helpful websites here on our podcast and in our newsletters.

I took a look at what Sean was doing and — honestly — I don’t know of anyone else on the internet doing what he does with his Substack newsletters. Perhaps there are a few, but we’ll get into what exactly he’s doing with his Substacks…now up to at least three… here when we get going.

Point being, not everyone is going to be interested in what you do or say, but you do have an audience.

Sean is a graduate of University of Kansas.

He worked for Goldman Sachs as an analyst for about 3 years and now works with Standard C.

He uses his spare time to train in martial arts.

All-In Write-Ups All-In Write-Ups Weekly write-up over the All-In Podcast By Sean Edrington

Sean writes-up / completes “show notes” for All-In Podcast.

https://twitter.com/theallinpod

https://linktr.ee/allinpodcast

The Besties:

Chamath Palihapitiya

David Friedberg

David Sacks

Jason Calcanis

The Besties cover all things economic, tech, political, social & poker.

My First Million Write-Ups My First Million Write-Ups Weekly Write-ups over My First Million Podcast By Sean Edrington

Sean writes-up or completes the “show notes” for My First Million podcast.

Sam Parr (https://twitter.com/thesamparr)

The Daily Hustle (https://thehustle.co/)
