I recently did some re-org in the office so I can’t find it right now. Otherwise, I would have scanned it and put it in the show notes.</p> <p>My dad was a big Obama guy as well. Can’t figure it out. Good in that I love to read “What’s Alan Watching,” but perhaps too “critical” of the show itself.</p> <p>Sepinwall’s piece was a breakdown of the season premiere episode, not the one I mentioned here today, which was the third installment.</p> <p>I think <em>The Mandolorian</em>—and the Disney properties in general—have major flaws. No doubt.</p> <p>However, The Mandolorian—both the character and the show—are just cool. I’ve loved all of the Star Wars live action TV shows way more than the atrocities called the “prequel” movies and certainly the sequel trilogy. I did like the first installment of the sequels for a little bit—you can’t really go wrong with Han and Chewie.</p> <p>That being said, the Star Wars TV stuff—<em>Andor, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi,</em> and <em>The Mandalorian</em>—are all great entertainment as far as I’m concerned. In the way that Rogue One and Solo were good entertainment. It covered twenty-four Midwestern cities in twenty-four days—there were no off days.</p> <p>The tour schedule crisscrossed the upper Midwest with no apparent logic. Overnight jaunts of several hundred miles—all in sub-freezing temperatures—were commonplace.</p> <p>Holly historian Bill Griggs had this to say about General Artists Corporation (GAC)—the operation which booked the tour:</p> <p><em>"They didn’t care. It was like they threw darts at a map… The tour from hell—that’s what they named it—and it’s not a bad name."</em></p> <p>On February 2nd, the show in Clear Lake, Iowa ended, and the tour headed about 400 miles northwest from Clear Lake to Morehead, Minnesota.</p> <p>Holly famously chartered a plane for his band prior to the show. Buddy was concerned with getting some rest and making a head start to take care of some much-needed laundry for him and his tour mates.</p> <p>Ultimately, only the headliners of the show took the charter.</p> <p>Waylon Jennings, then playing bass guitar in Holly’s band, said he felt more comfortable riding on the tour bus and voluntarily gave up his seat to J.P. Richardson, the Beaumont, Texas disc jockey and tour co-headliner, known as The Big Bopper.</p> <p>Richardson felt ill and needed rest.</p> <p>The Winter Dance Party consisted of several contemporary and would-be stars.</p> <p>Yet the party ended on February 3, 1959, for the 22-year-old Holly and 28-year-old Big Bopper when the plane went down in a blizzard shortly after takeoff, five miles northwest of Mason City, Iowa.</p> <p>Also perishing in the infamous crash was 17-year-old Ritchie Valens of “La Bamba” fame.</p> <p>Yet the tour played on. Sadly, in retrospect.</p> <p>Future chart-topper Bobby Vee, then but 15-years-old, had Buddy Holly's material down cold. So, the Minnesota child filled in—in place of Holly—on February 3 in Morehead.</p> <p>Jimmy Clanton, Frankie Avalon, and Fabian ultimately finished the tour in the place of the deceased stars.</p> <p>Waylon couldn't get to Holly's funeral. GAC wouldn’t let him leave the tour.</p> <p>To add insult to injury, venue managers regularly threatened non-payment for shows because the original headliners didn't appear. It didn’t matter that they had perished in a tragedy.</p> <p>After the crash, Jennings continued for two more weeks on the tour with doo-wop stars Dion and the Belmonts amongst others. Lead singer Dion DiMucci is the last original headliner still alive today and is in his early 80s.</p> <p>Jennings returned to Lubbock, Texas after the tour ended. Holly’s father looked after young Waylon.</p> <p>In <em>Waylon: An Autobiography</em>, Jennings wrote: “Mr. Holley wanted to promote me, because he said Buddy believed in me, but I had enough sense to know that wouldn’t be right. He bought me clothes and things like Buddy would.”</p> <p>Waylon returned to the job that got him noticed by Buddy Holly in the first place, as a radio disc jockey. He bounced around west Texas and Arizona as a DJ for the better part of a decade before he reappeared in the public consciousness as a musician once again in the late 1960s.</p> <p>So, contrary to the schmaltz unleashed by Don McLean in 1971, “music" did <em>not</em> die that day.</p> <p>It is more than unsettling that <em>American Pie</em>, McLean’s terrible—and entirely too long of a—…</p>

Anything we’re finding out is because of independent media. I am not sure what all of this means, but I have some thoughts…</p> <p>In this podcast, I analyze last night's events and it only runs about 30 minutes. But if you want to get a bird’s eye view of what I’m talking about, the rest of these show notes should suffice.</p> <p>The talking heads on ESPN were stuck with talking about an event that nobody can really prepare for. Instead of rising to the occasion, the hours of coverage—until they strangely cut to an axe-throwing competition after the Bills-Bengals game was ultimately postponed for the night—were full of fluff and talking for talk’s sake.</p> <p>We learned very little about what happened to Damar Hamlin other than he received CPR and went to the hospital and remained in stable but critical condition.</p> <p>Here’s the play:</p> <p><a href="https://youtu.be/r1Z9Vd53yhI">https://youtu.be/r1Z9Vd53yhI</a></p> <p>The folks on ESPN emoted and talked. We learned nothing other than certain people lack composure on air when push comes to shove.</p> <p>Ironically, an article that came my way earlier today praised the efforts of the entire ESPN team and its coverage, going so far as to call it a “masterclass” and that “we’ll be teaching their coverage of Monday night’s story in journalism school for decades.” This is from a supposedly credible writer.</p> <p>He went on. “There was no speculation. No rumors. No reporting of what was being speculated on Twitter. Just honest conversations, straight reporting, real human emotion.”</p> <p>In case you’d like to know more about these factual but feckless statements, I analyze the situation in more detail on the podcast.</p> <p>One thing we didn’t mention was Skip Bayless’s reaction to all of this. In the first place, Skip is a world class jerk and he doesn’t help himself when he tries to Tweet or talk himself out of the various predicaments he caused by his own words.</p> <p>Jason Whitlock Tweeted what are essentially my sentiments about Bayless in this situation:</p> <p>“It’s all so phony. All of it. The outrage toward Skip and this reaction by Skip. It’s all performance. No can-do.</p> <p>Buffalo wings—at least the sauce—are an absolute non-starter for me. Pure pain, no enjoyment.</p> <p>Ironic, then, after I get off the call with Barbara and I fancy a Lebanese-style meal. I bought some kebabs the other day at Costco where all I have to do is reheat them. We have some hummus in the fridge and some sliced pepperoncini for a little garnish, bite, texture, or what have you.</p> <p>I ate 3 kebabs, a small helping of hummus, and a few of the sliced pepperoncini. As the night progressed, my stomach started talking back to me, but I paid it little mind and eventually retired for the night.</p> <p>Come about 1:30 in the morning, not only my tummy, but my throat started screaming at me and I had to get up to get an antacid tablet. Spent a few hours milling around, reading, etc. before I could get back to sleep. Felt back to normal the next morning.</p> <p>Point is: know your limits. Harris joined the Seahawks in September, but only ended up playing in 8 games and ended up with 170 yards rushing on the season.
