Marketing Wasn't Meant For Moms...Until Now

Today's rules of marketing force us in one direction: be everywhere, all the time, non-stop. It's all about more content, more entertainment, and of course - more virality. Here's the problem for moms: this isn't a sustainable version of marketing. It's exhausting, guilt-inducing and unrealistic. Our life requirements don't align with being online all the time, and we shouldn't have to play by those rules to succeed. No matter what: our children will always be the dominant priority in our lives. Why not set up our business with this in mind, instead of forcing ourselves to market the way everyone else does? Can we do marketing on our own terms and still have success? We want to live in a world where moms don't have to say yes to ridiculous unsustainable ways of marketing, starting now. In this episode, I talk about why moms can't run their businesses the way everyone else does, and how to succeed on our own terms. The rules of business and marketing aren't realistic or sustainable for moms. We need to stop forcing ourselves to be successful in the same way as people who don't have our life requirements. -Dana Malstaff 3 Things You'll Learn in This Episode -How to create a legacy of loving what we do Our kids soak up everything we do. How do we change that? -Experts vs. content creators It often feels like if we're not pointing, dancing or entertaining, we aren't marketing. Could this viral, content creator approach actually be detrimental? Is there a better way? -Productivity isn't just about time Taking advice from people who don't understand our lives is dangerous. How do we see time management, boundaries and priorities from our perspective as moms?

So many women have juicy and purposeful potential inside them, but because they're too depleted to see the possibilities, it never sees the light of day. We tell ourselves that being moms is what's holding us back. The truth is: not tapping into our potential has nothing to do with our kids, and everything to do with our own emotions. When we operate from an agitated nervous system, urgency, overwhelm and exhaustion become the norm. That way, we'll never have to choose between the greatest gift in life, and our purpose and contribution to the world. How do we repair our nervous systems so we can start operating from a place of calm and wholeness? Can we unearth our purpose by doing less? In this episode, I'm joined by top ranked podcast host, 8 figure spiritual and business coach, and author of the upcoming book "Abundant Ever After", Cathy Heller. We want to raise emotionally intelligent, connected and kind children who will become awesome adults. Gratitude Can Hurt You...Do This Instead

Every time we tell someone to be grateful for something they find burdensome, frustrating and hard, all we do is create a bunch of guilt and resentment. There's something a lot better than gratitude - perspective. What if instead of forcing gratitude, we admit that yes, this thing sucks, but we're doing it in service of a greater good or bigger goal? By allowing ourselves to shift perspective and not express gratitude for things we're not happy about, we're being honest with ourselves, and we move through it a lot easier. In this episode, I talk about the danger of gratitude, and why perspective is way more effective. You've got to decide the stuff you care about. That way, you can shift your perspective to why the hard things you're doing matter, then you can be grateful for the journey, even though the moments piss you off. -Dana Malstaff 3 Things You'll Learn in This Episode -Your brain hates it when you're sneaky Forcing yourself to be grateful for things you're not happy about backfires. What happens to our brains when we're not honest about something that sucks? -Balancing things out No one is grateful for allergies and other challenges. How can we use humor and perspective to deal with it? -Don't deny what pisses you off How do we find out what we care about so we know the hard things we have to do to get them?

Language, our vocal pitches and accents are the ultimate marker of identity. The words we speak and how we say them affect how people perceive us and even our ability to build authority. Majka Burhardt On Redefining Motherhood & Inspiring Our Kids By Chasing What We Love

Seeing how we live our lives is how our kids gauge reality and ultimately create the lives they want. If we make them feel like parenthood means giving up what we love, that's what they'll believe. If we show them that we can have things we're passionate about, they'll follow that example. Being mothers, business owners and everything else in our lives certainly isn't easy, and that's okay. The more honest we are about that and the less we obsess over balance, the better the journey gets. In this episode, I'm joined by professional climber, conservation entrepreneur, founder of Legado and the author of "More: Life on the Edge of Adventure and Motherhood", Majka Burhardt. We talk about her journey, what she wants to teach her kids and the power of deconstructing and reinventing everything. Seeking balance means that one day we'll achieve it and be perfect. Motherhood made me realize that everything exists together and it's always moving. -Majka Burhardt 3 Things You'll Learn in This Episode - Do it with joy, but also with honesty We all have different aspects to our identity. How does motherhood color those things and how we show up in all our roles? - Take yourself on an adventure How did Majka choose what life, motherhood and entrepreneurship looked like for her without following convention? - It's okay if our kids aren't insanely passionate about anything There's a lot of pressure around the idea of having a passion. Does that do a disservice to our children? Guest Bio Majka Burhardt is a professional climber, conservation entrepreneur, author, and filmmaker. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Legado and the author of Vertical Ethiopia: Climbing Toward Possibility in the Horn of Africa, which was short-listed for the Banff Book Award, as well as her latest book, More: Life on the Edge of Adventure and Motherhood, a Next Big Idea Club must-read. More: Life on the Edge of Adventure and Motherhood is an intense and emotional epistolary memoir by one of the world's top ice climbers, born at the confluence of motherhood, adventure, career, and marriage. As leading professional climbers and mountain guides, Majka Burhardt and her husband led globe-trotting, adventure-seeking lives. When she learns that she's pregnant—with twins—Burhardt at first tries to balance her pursuit of extreme risk with her new reality of maternal responsibility. However, she is ultimately forced to face the avalanche of emotions unleashed by the biggest disruption she's ever confronted—in the mountains or otherwise. Based on the letters and journals Burhardt diligently kept over the course of her pregnancy and the first five years of her children's lives, More takes the reader on an around-the-world journey as Burhardt explores the transformative, identity-shifting experience of motherhood and its irreversible impact on career, identity, marriage, and self.
