The Berean Call Podcast

<p>When I speak to young Christian adults, whether they are in the workplace or in college, a message that I hope encourages them concerns God's willingness to guide their lives if that is their desire. I use His involvement in my own life throughout my 78 years as an example. The following is an abridged version of God’s gracious guidance, much of it well before I came to know Him personally.</p><p><br></p><p>I was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and baptized Thomas Aloysius McMahon in the Roman Catholic Church. In my early grade-school years, my family moved to Apple Creek, Ohio, where my dad was a psychiatrist at the state mental health facility. Our home was on the 2,000-acre grounds of the institution. That aspect of my background came to light during the times when Dave Hunt and I were both speakers at conferences. Dave enjoyed mentioning to the audience that “Tom grew up in an insane asylum, so you really need to be Bereans in checking out what he says.” They thought he was joking until I admitted that he was correct on both accounts. My psychiatrist father was a director of a large mental institution and our family lived on the grounds.</p><p><br></p><p>My education was mostly under Catholic instruction, including elementary school, military school, and high school, as well as a brief time in a Catholic fraternity. I enjoyed my Catholic upbringing and looked upon many of the nuns and priests in my life as extended family members. Those fond memories remain.</p>

Now, Keith is the author of Wandering Stars: Contending for the Faith with the New Apostles and Prophets. If there’s a better book addressing the false teachings bound up in the Latter Rain [movement], Manifest Sons of God, the so-called Kansas City Prophets, the International House of Prayer, Bethel Church of Redding, CA, and many other heresies—well, I’m not aware of it. Keith took the name of his book from Jude’s epistle, which exhorts believers to “contend for the faith.” Verse 13 characterizes false teachings as “raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.”</p>

We’re willing to be corrected. We will listen to what people have to say, but, you know, we’re Bereans. We need to search the Scriptures to see what the Word of God says about these things, and I quoted 1 John 3:2,3: “Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be. But we know that when he is revealed, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is, and everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself just as he is pure.” That’s what the Word of God says: it’s a purification thing. We’re looking—we’re expecting for Him to return, and we want to hear those words, you know, as we’re snatched away, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” I mean, wouldn’t that keep you—not anxious, but certainly doing the things that would please our Lord so that when we see Him, He will be pleased with us? What do you think, Tommy?</p>

<p>ROMANS 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?</p><p><br></p><p>1 CORINTHIANS 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.</p><p><br></p><p>1 CORINTHIANS 7:1-2 Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman [of carnal intercourse with a women or cohabitation]. Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.</p><p><br></p><p>1 CORINTHIANS 7:3-5 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence [affection]: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. <p>Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. —2 Thessalonians 2:3-4</p><p><br></p><p>And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. More specifically psychological counseling, also referred to as “psychotherapy.”</p><p><br></p><p>We’re going to consider the influence it’s had upon evangelical Christianity, and there’s no one better suited with whom to discuss the subject, in my opinion, than with our guests, Martin and Deidre Bobgan. They are prolific writers, with close to…well, 21 titles to their credit, nearly all addressing the scriptural problems with psychological counseling, and, I might add, so-called biblical counseling.</p><p>First of all, Deidre, Martin, welcome to Search the Scriptures 24/7.</p><p><br></p><p>Martin: Thank you very much.
