After another four-week break, the run-in for the 2024 Formula One World Championship starts this weekend with Round 19 - The United States Grand Prix from Austin, Texas. The four finalists who will contest the 2024 Silverstone Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award have been selected. Formula 3 race winner Arvid Lindblad, recently crowned British F4 champion Deagen Fairclough, GB3 Champion Louis Sharp and Italian F4 Champion Freddie Slater will battle it out for prizes that include a test in Aston Martin F1 machinery and £200,000. Of the four finalists, only Lindblad has been a finalist before, in 2023. Today marks the 50th Anniversary of one of McLaren's greatest achievements. In 1974, they became the second manufacturer in history to win the Formula One World Championship and the Indianapolis 500 in the same year. Motorsport legends Emerson Fittpaldi won the F1 World Title in the McLaren M23, and Johnny Rutherford won the Indy 500 with the McLaren M16, two cars with very similar design concepts that stood the test of time. It was an emotional Singapore GP for Daniel Ricciardo, with strong rumours circulating at the time it may have been his final race in Formula 1. After nearly an entire season of the World Endurance Championship, the series finally had a repeat winner at the Six Hours of Fuji as as the #6 Porsche team of Kevin Estre, Andre Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor took a sixteen second victory over the WRT BMW team, with the #36 Alpine team scoring their first podium of the season in third. Gary Watkins joins Kevin Turner to review all the action from Fuji, including the missed opportunities left on the table by Toyota and Ferrari, as well as Cadillac's Earl Bamber, who span off into the outside wall late on. The 1994 Indycar season was one of the most significant seasons in US open-wheel racing's recent history, and much of that is down to the arrival of Reynard. The British company's success in single-seater racing was translated dramatically into Indycar, as Michael Andretti won its first race at Surfers Paradise, sending shockwaves through the motorsport landscape. The result not only broke the previous duopoly enjoyed by Lola and Penske - the latter subsequently becoming a Reynard customer - but also established Chip Ganassi Racing as a winning force for the first time, while Jacques Villeneuve also emerged as a star of the future later in the season with a Reynard, taking his first win for the Forsythe/Green team. Thirty years on, that breakout story is retold by company founder Adrian Reynard in a special edition of the Autosport Podcast to coincide with the latest issue of Autosport magazine's Engineering supplement. Last week, the FIA announced the first draft of its new regulations, set to debut at the start of the 2026 season. There are some big changes on the horizon, including smaller and nimbler cars, a reduction in the minimum weight limit as well as multiple modes for the front and rear wings to adjust downforce. There’ll be more reliance on the battery for power deployment and MOM – A manual override mode the drivers can activate for extra power at higher speeds. But are these the right moves for the sport going forward? Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Kalle Rovanperä is one of the brightest young talents in Motorsport having rewritten the World Rally Championship record books, becoming the youngest ever champion aged 22 in 2022. Nigel Mansell’s Formula 1 world championship-winning Williams FW14B is currently on display next to the Lola the British legend used to win the 1993 CART title in a special exhibition at Silverstone. Thanks to a multi-million-dollar refurbishment at the Indianapolis Motorsport Speedway Museum, the Silverstone Museum currently has four special cars over from America. The Indy 500: A British Success Story exhibition includes Mansell’s Lola T93/00, the Coyote in which US great AJ Foyt won when Indycar visited Silverstone (and broke F1 records) in the 1970s, a gas turbine-powered Lotus 56 from 1968 and the Bentley that contested the 1922 Indy 500. In this special podcast from the Silverstone Museum, host Kevin Turner is joined by author/historian Ian Wagstaff and the museum’s head of collections and research Steph Sykes-Dugmore to reveal the stories behind these special machines and Britain's role in America's greatest race. It was another all-time classic race in Indiana as the 108th running of the Indy 500 led to a final lap showdown between arguably the two best oval drivers in the world, as Josef Newgarden and Pato O’Ward left it all on the line, with Newgarden taking victory and becoming the first man to go back-to-back at the 500 since Helio Castroneves in 2002!
