Daniel Ricciardo and McLaren have agreed to part ways at the end of the current Formula 1 season, bringing a premature end to his tenure at the Woking-based squad. In the wake of the Australian’s ongoing difficulties to get on terms with team-mate Lando Norris during their two years alongside each other, McLaren began a process several weeks ago to agree a separation. With McLaren hoping to sign Oscar Piastri for 2023, who is currently in a contract dispute with the Alpine squad where he is its reserve driver, it began discussions with Ricciardo about a termination of his current deal so it could open a slot for the youngster. Those talks have now reached a conclusion with McLaren and Ricciardo agreeing that this will be his final season with the team. The news was announced first by the Australian driver on Wednesday, ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. Since Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement the driver market has moved at breakneck pace. Fernando Alonso was confirmed for a place at Aston Martin in 2023, which should have opened the door for an Alpine race seat for Formula 2 champ Oscar Piastri. However a bizarre set of public announcements saw the team confirm Piastri for '23, only for the driver to respond on social media saying he will not race at Alpine. Formula 1 heads into the Summer break with it’s reigning champ and title favourite eighty points ahead of his main rival. Max Verstappen started tenth, carved his way through the field, Red Bull strategists made bold calls and the RFB18 was the class of the pack. Round 9 of the Formula 1 World Championship saw Max Verstappen extend his championship lead as his main rivals faltered – teammate Sergio Perez retired with mechanical failure and Charles Leclerc managed fifth from a back row grid slot due to engine penalties. Matt Kew joins Martyn Lee to analyse the first two practice sessions for the Canadian Grand Prix. Formula 1 is back in Montreal for the first time since 2019, with a severe weather warning arriving shortly after the teams arrived in the paddock. With the ever present threat of rain, the first practice session was busier than usual with teams and drivers maximising track time to try different setups and scenarios. However the rain stayed away throughout the second session, which saw both Ferrari and Red Bull quick on the low fuel runs. The long race pace was good for the Red Bull of Verstappen, whilst his teammate Perez was a second off the pace, something which Christian Horner put down to setup differences between driving styles. Grid penalties are already becoming a topic after just 8 full weekends of running, as the Alpha Tauri of Tsunoda will start from the back of the grid due to taking a complete set of Red Bull powertrain components.
