S3 Ep 8Changing the lives of kids with critical illness (feat. Kate Mazelin of GKTW) S3E8

This is a very special episode and one that's very near and dear to my heart. While on our recent trip to Orlando, I had a chance to sit down for a face to face with Kate Mazelin, Marketing Director of Give Kids The World. Give Kids The World is an amazing place where kids with terminal, life threatening or serious health condions, along with their families, can spend time, make memories and find hope. My family is one such family and we spent a week at Give Kids The World in 2017, when my oldest son has his wish granted. Kate and I had an emotional discussion about what makes GKTW so special, why they do what they do and how they changed my family's life. About Kate Mazelin: Kate Mazelin is the Marketing Director at Give Kids The World. Kate has been with the Village since 2014. Prior to working for the Village she was the Program Director at Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding Inc. in Zionsville, Indiana. Kate is a licensed therapeutic riding instructor, holds a certificate in mental health intervention and has worked with children on the autism spectrum since 2005. At Give Kids The World, Kate is a part of a dedicated team whose goal is to build the Give Kids The World brand and to build a battalion of supporters willing to donate to, volunteer for, and advocate on behalf of the organization. S3 Ep 7Shifting the Focus on Autism and Grief (feat. Taylor Linloff) S3E7

In this week's episode, I speak with Taylor Linloff. Taylor is 25 years old and was diagnosed with Autism and severe anxiety in 2018. Taylor became an advocate after being cast in CBC's "You Can't Ask That" Docuseries and is listed as #10 in The Mighty's top 14 autistic influencers. Taylor also lost her father, Conrad, last month to cancer and she wanted to use her experience to help others, like myself, better understand how Autistic people grieve. "It's unfortunate that people still think autistics can't emotionally connect or love someone to mourn them when they're gone. We, as in society as a whole, needs to shift our focus and understanding to better understand, support, and respect our emotional capabilities." - Taylor Linloff Taylor titled and picked the artwork for this episode. The rose is dedicated to both her late father and neurodiversity. :-) You can Find Taylor:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AspirationalAutistic/ (https://www.facebook.com/AspirationalAutistic/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aspirationalautistic/ (https://www.instagram.com/aspirationalautistic/) Twitter: https://www.instagram.com/aspirationalautistic/ (https://www.instagram.com/aspirationalautistic/) Website: https://aspirationalautistic.wordpress.com/2020/01/17/featured-in/ (https://aspirationalautistic.wordpress.com/) http://bit.ly/2ZPjjAx (Support This Podcast) You can find me: https://my.captivate.fm/theautismdad.com (theautismdad.com) Twitter: https://twitter.com/theautismdad (https://twitter.com/theautismdad) Learn more about your ad choices. S3 Ep 6Autism Certified (feat. DoubleTree Orlando at SeaWorld) S3E6

As you know, or maybe you don't, my boys and I were invited to stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld recently. They are one of the very first hotels in the country to become Autism Certified. Our mission was to honestly evaluate their Autism friendly accommodations and experience what it's like to visit a truly inclusive hotel. In this episode, I sit down with David, Laura and Ana to talk about what it means to be Autism Certified. We have a conversation about what families can expect when they visit and what makes DoubleTree different than most other hotels in the country. My kids and I almost never travel. In fact, this is only our second vacation in almost 20 years, the first being Gavin's wish trip a few years ago. This was a massive undertaking on my part and I want to thank everyone who helped make this trip possible. ☺ We're home now and I want to share our experience with you, while it's fresh in my mind. S3 Ep 5Protecting the Affordable Care Act (feat. Peter Morley) S3E5

In this week's episode, I have the honor of speaking with one of my personal hero's Peter Morley. Peter is an amazing human being and someone I'm truly grateful to call friend. Peter has battled cancer, lives in chronic pain and faces many other health challenges. He's devoted his life to fighting to protect our health care. He regularly travels to Washington DC in order to testify before congress or meet with Senators and Congressmen/women to advocate for Healthcare. He's fighting to help ensure that the ACA (Affordable Care Act) is improved upon and not dismantled. Peter and I have a conversation about the importance of protecting the ACA and what would happen if the Trump Administration successfully dismantles it. We also talk about how this could specifically impact the Autism and Special Needs communities. This is serious stuff folks, and you need to pay attention. S3 Ep 4Autism when You're a Military Family (feat. Josh Gibbs) S3E4

S3E4 This weeks episode broaches the subject of what it's like to be an Autism parent, while in the US Military. I had the honor to speaking with Josh Gibbs and learning about the unique challenges that our Military families face while raising a child with Autism. Josh shares how to navigate the system inside the military in order to find your child the help and services they need. I'm so grateful that Josh was willing to share a bit about his life and introduce us to Jai, his amazing son. ☺ Josh Gibbs Bio: Joshua Gibbs enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1998. He graduated basic training at Parris Island, SC in August 1998 and began training with Charlie Company, 8th Tank Battalion in Tallahassee, FL where he was enrolled at Florida State University. Lance Corporal Gibbs attended Officers Candidate School in 2000 and upon completion of his B.S. in Criminology and subsequent commissioning, attended The Basic School in Quantico, VA. In October 2002, Second Lieutenant Gibbs was assigned to the 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, CA, serving as the Assistant G-1 Operations Officer, Assistant G-1 Adjutant and G-1 Adjutant. During this time, he deployed twice in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in 2003 and 2004. Josh has served at several duty stations around the world. His son, Jai Lando GIbbs was born in 2014, in New Orleans, LA. In August 2015, he was transferred to U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command in Norfolk, VA. During this tour, his son was formally diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program. In 2018, Major Gibbs received orders to the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Logistics Command in Albany, GA. However, it was discovered that this Command could not support the educational and therapeutic needs of his son and so a request was made to transfer his orders to U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South in Doral, FL. The MARFORSOUTH location could not only provide the services his son required, but was closer to immediate family members in the event of an emergency. Major Gibbs’ personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2d Award), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He is a graduate of the Expeditionary Warfare School, the Command and Staff College and has an M.S. in Criminology. He has also written one book, Kingdom of Hook, a fictional origin story for Captain Hook which was inspired by cartoons his son watched as an infant. He currently resides in Miramar, Florida. S3 Ep 1The Facts About Vaccines (feat. Dr. Ryan Marino) S3E1

S3E1 I have a very honest conversation about vaccines with Dr. Ryan Marino, an ER Physician and Medical Toxicologist at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. It's 2020 and we're still debating vaccines, while people are getting sick from diseases that were once considered eradicated. People are contracting measles and whooping cough at epidemic levels due to people refusing to vaccinate. Vaccines not only help to protect the person receiving it but also people like my son with CVID, those fighting cancer, living with HIV or anything else that compromises the immune system. The very old and very young are also vulnerable as well. Herd immunity matters and as a society, we must not only protect ourselves and our loved ones but also those who are unable to protect themselves. S2 Ep 9Autism Healthcare Collaborative (feat. Sheri Marino) S2E9

I had the opportunity to speak with Sheri A. Marino, MA, CCC-SLP this past week. She's the Executive Director of the Autism Healthcare Collaborative. The only way I can think to describe this organization is Dr. House meets Autism. The AHC basically provides families of medically complicated Autistic children with access to the top doctors from various specialities via teleconferencing. This puts all necessary medical professionals in the same room at the same time and allows them to discuss your child's case in realtime, with your child's current doctor. Sheri and I discuss the importance and advantages of what they're doing for families. I'll talk about what happened, why Gavin was hospitalized, where we stand right now, and what we learned. This was a really scary experience and it sorta completes last week's story. It's a teachable moment and provides some insight into what families like mine can often find themselves confronting. S1 Ep 8Bittersweet Victories (S1E8)

In this episode, I talk about what many of us face from time to time. Bittersweet Victories are the kind of victory that comes after a loss. In the case of my family, Gavin is losing significant skills and while we are heartbroken to see this loss, he still managed to do something for the first time. While the loss is a negative thing, any progress is worth celebrating. Hence, Bittersweet Victories. An Assault of Verbiage (Bonus)

bonus

My listeners have been asking for me to try doing episodes where I talk freely about my personal struggles with being an Autism Dad. I thought I'd give it a try. In this bonus episode, I talk about some of those personal struggles, as well as my struggle with Depression, what it feels like to be a Dad to 3 with Autism and the impact it has on my life. S1 Ep 5Why Are Autism Parents Judged So Harshly? (S1E5)

Please Subscribe In this latest episode of The Autism Dad Podcast, I talk about judgment. Autism families often find themselves on the receiving end of judgment because people just don't get it or don't care. I talk about common situations in which judgment occurs and how cruel, thoughtless words can have a very real impact. If you have ever felt judged at any point in your Autism parenting journey, this episode was created with you in mind. I encourage you to share this with anyone who could benefit from this kind of insight. S1 Ep 4What You Need To Know About Meltdowns (S1E4)

Sensory Processing Disorder and Meltdowns are two of the most commonly misunderstood things that an Autistic person can experience. Even more confusing is how to know the difference between a meltdown and a tantrum. Those words are used interchangeably and that’s a major problem, leading to a great deal of misinformation. This episode will help to explain how these things can impact people and how to tell the difference between a meltdown and a tantrum. You’ll also hear from Emmett, my youngest, as he talks about how SPD impacts his life on a daily basis. S1 Ep 3My Son Had His Wish Granted (S1E3)

In this episode, I share a very emotional interview I gave last year during the annual Wish-A-Thon. We were helping raise awareness and money for an amazing organization called Wishes Can Happen. They grant wishes to local children with life-threatening or terminal health conditions, like my oldest. It's very difficult to talk about but it's so important to raise awareness for organizations like Wishes Can Happen. They do amazing work and what they provide children like my son, as well as families like mine is beyond measure. This is our story.
