The question I've been asked the most since I started making videos is "How do I make it as a fine-art photographer". I will attempt to answer that today.

Fan Ho was one of the brilliant photographers to come out of China in the 1950's and 1960's. His most known body of work was done in Hong Kong documenting its mid-century growth. Later Fan Ho worked as an acclaimed and award-wining film director. He passed away from pnemonia on June 19, 2016 at the age of 84. Jacques Henri Lartigue was largely unknown as a photographer until the age of 70. Born in Courbevoie to a wealthy family, he took up photography about the age of 7. Some of his most famous photographs were made as a teenager. His subjects ranged from auto-racing to aviation. Lartigue's use of action in his photographs set him apart from many photographers of the time. After the family money started running out in the 1930's, Lartigue spent the next 30 years making a meager salary off of his paintings. He had a few photographs published in the 1950's, but it wasn't until the 1960's that his work was shown to John Szarkowski at MoMA in New York and he became known as one of the great photographers of the 20th Century. Off to Jackson Hole, WY to film David Brookover for the Artist Series. David is the greatest photographer you've probably never heard of. He owns a gallery in Jackson Hole that features his own photographs. David's work celebrates the American West through landscape and wildlife images that are printed in a variety of mediums including silver gelatin, bromoil, photogravure, and platinum/palladium. Artist Series Episode 3 With a career spanning over 40 years, Laura Wilson is a respected photographer in the art world. Laura has published five monograph books. The first three are studies in people: Hutterite communities, small town six-man football and a beautiful study of a Texas rancher. Avedon at Work is a unique documentation of her years as Richard Avedon’s research assistant from 1979 to 1985 on his “In The American West” project. In 2015, That Day was published as a career retrospective with an accompanying solo exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, TX. I had the chance to try out the Sony RX1R II last week while I was in New York. This is a top-of-the-line camera from Sony which features a compact body paired with a 42 megapixel sensor and fixed 35mm f/2 lens. This is probably the best camera in terms of image quality that I have used to date. The highlight for me is the impressive 35mm lens which is way more versatile and has much better range than I expected it to have. Though its missing a few features for video, this is an extremely impressive camera from Sony. The GoPro Hero4 Session is a tiny cube that records HD video at 1080p 30fps and 8-megapixel still images. I'm really liking this camera. Its had some negative reviews and people seem to misunderstand how to get the best footage out of this camera. This week, Kodak announced the new Kodak Super 8 camera to be released in the Fall of 2016. This is a particularly interesting announcement considering the decline of Super 8 in film production over the years. But more importantly will be the process behind the camera. It has digital features such as a 3.5 inch display and outputs for compatibility with other equipment. But it captures on Super 8 cartridge film. When you purchase the film, you will be pre-paying the processing as well.
