Steve Waller is an expert in the study of ArchaeoAcoustics. ArchaeoAcoustics is the study of sound in the prehistoric environment. Mr. Waller got his start in the caves of France while pursuing a passion for rock art study. One idea that Mr. Waller pursued was the idea that rock art was actually inspired by sound - specifically the sound in a cave. Brian Fritz is an archaeologist and inventor that saw an issue with deep digging in Pennsylvania. To help out he developed a new machine that can basically do an auger test down to 7 meters, log the levels along the way, and there's an attached mechanized screen. A field school is usually required to get a job in Cultural Resources Management. A lot of professionals went to a field school that filled an interested and didn't really prepare them for a career in CRM. There are a few CRM field schools out there and another is starting in May of 2022. The Center for American Archaeology has created a four-week program of intense study and on today's episode, we talk to one of the directors of the program, Dr. Jason King.Field School DescriptionAPPLIED ARCHAEOLOGY FOR CRM CAREERS (CRMFS) is a four-week, intensive field school experience designed to provide students with job-ready skills to enter the workforce as archaeological field technicians at the Cultural Resource Management (CRM) industry. Students will learn key skills necessary for CRM jobs, including survey, surface collection, shovel-testing, excavation, laboratory techniques, relevant laws, and reporting. Students will learn the entire process of CRM practices, from data collection to data reporting and mitigation. Practical field and laboratory activities are supplemented by relevant readings and formal lectures.About Dr. Jason KingDr. Jason L King is the Executive Director of the Center for American Archeology in Kampsville, IL. He earned his BA from the University of South Carolina and MA and PhD from the University of New Mexico. This week, we explore yet another place that’s not a backwater or influenced by aliens! In 1986, two pits were excavated at the site of Sanxingdui (Three Stars Mound) in what is today China’s Sichuan province. These two pits, and six more uncovered in 2021, were full of bronze, jade, gold, and ivory objects that appear to have been “sacrificed” (burned or broken) before burial. The artifacts were made in a style never before seen in Chinese material culture. What was going on at Sanxingdui, and why was the site abruptly abandoned thousands of years ago?
