In order to begin to understand the symbols we see on the rocks and the people that made them we need to understand their environment. Carlos Gallinger has spent a lifetime studying the habits of the Bighorn Sheep in order to understand the people that live with, and off, off them. For example, it’s not feasible to take down a Bighorn sheep ten miles from your family. You need to be where the sheep are and understand them. Though excavation is pretty much synonymous with archaeological fieldwork in the popular and professional imagination, the bulk of the work that we, as archaeologists, do is survey.
