Wen-Tzu – Introduction – Looking Within
EToday we started Thomas Cleary's 1991 translation of Wen-Tzu. According to the introduction, this is the first translation of this text into English. We covered all the pre-chapter material and will start on the first verse next week. A good conversation about the origins of the Wen-Tzu plus some of the basic teachings of Taoist thought; lots of acceptance, and looking within for the answers. We also covered the three forms of unnatural death and the four practices of government, both corporate and personal. Chuang Tzu – Good Fortune – Fear or Acceptance!
EToday I find it's the best thing that has ever happened to me. This proves I don't know what's good for me. And if I don't know what's good for me, then I don't know what's good or bad for you or for anyone. So I'm better off if I don't give advice, don't figure I know what's best, and just accept life on life's terms, as it is today-especially my own life, as it actually is. Chuang Tzu - Apologies – The Downward Spiral from Spiritual Fitness!
EOur spiral from spiritual fitness to thinking a drink would be a good idea can be very subtle. This story demonstrates the spiral. For me, if there is something in my life that I start to control that I should be surrendering, I will lose my peace. If I remain in that state of peacelessness long enough (step 2), I start having outward unmanageability (step 1). The outward unmanageability can take many forms, including control, anger, resentment, dishonesty, or fear. Chuang Tzu - Kengs Disciple Part 2 – Forgetting What I Know!
EIs sobriety like everything else? Get educated, work hard, and if you don't get it at first, double down and work even harder? Or is sobriety the opposite? Enjoying the Holidays Sober!
EIn this episode, we discussed the tools we use to enjoy the holidays sober. For many, this is the first holiday season sober. Can we go to functions? How do we deal with the contrary family member that always pushes our buttons? This was an excellent discussion! Some of the tools discussed; Attend as many AA meetings as possible AND participate. Get a Sponsor and work the steps. When tempted, think the drink through and remind yourself WHY you stopped. Practice Gratitude first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Take care of your body, eat right, sleep right, exercise, and drink lots of water. Watch videos about the devastating effects of alcohol and listen to podcasts focused on sobriety. Reach out to others in need with a text, email, voice message. Get a sobriety app to track your days sober and dollars saved. Embrace the cold, shut off the hot water. Become an active part of a community - online or in person - and remember that the difference between Wellness and Illness is WE, not I. Have a way out – Always have a way to leave if you start feeling uncomfortable. Accountability – Bring a sober friend or check-in before and after the event. Keep a cup in your hand. Lower your expectations of everyone at the event. Don't take anyone's actions personally. You may even tell them you will not be drinking tonight and for sure ask them to put you on a pot of coffee. If you start getting antsy, start cleaning up, play with the kids, or go for a walk. Have a time limit for how long you are staying. It is time to leave when I hear the same story for a second time and at a higher decibel. Prepare for the event – take a nap, have a snack, go to an online meeting – be emotionally, spiritually, and physically ready, or reconsider attending. HALT – Take action when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. Take advantage of one or more of the many service opportunities during the holidays. Attend an online meeting at any moment before, during, or after the event and pray for each square until the craving passes. Verse 11 Tao Te Ching Discussion with Sensei Elliston! Emptiness Part 1
ESensei Michael Elliston shares his thoughts on the 10th verse of the Tao Te Ching from a Zen perspective. From the text, this became a conversation about emptiness. Sensei gives us a thorough explanation of how the ancient masters of Zen Buddhism taught emptiness. Next week, our story about seeking nothingness(emptiness) gives us Chaung Tzu's view on emptiness, diving into the spiritual applications in daily life. Chuang Tzu – The Flight of Lin Hui – The Extraordinary is Found in the Ordinary!
EThis story reminds us of the paradox of truth; what gives us peace and joy is not in what we thought would give us peace and joy. What we are looking for can be found in the last place we would think to look.
