Final pod of the year, and there is plenty to discuss!Mark opens with some news that he says is good but can't tell us. Confused? We were as well. Mark asks Nick if he thinks Golf Australia have any firm thoughts on the Australian Open moving forward. We discuss what next steps might be. Mark says that if Golf Australia are not preparing for the next Open, the format, date and structure now, there is a risk that next year if nothing is confirmed by June, they will look 'rudderless'.Nick reveals his favourite event to play these days, which he played in at the weekend. He tells us about the tournament and the incredible amount of money that was raised for charity. Nick was impressed with Jack Riewoldt's skills at the weekend, who took part in the event. Mark mentions how Rory McIlroy played Tara Iti last week. Do we value short Par 4's in Australia more than other people?Nick and Mark chat about Tour School from the weekend and some of the results. Mark tells a story when he was in US Tour School and bumped into one of his mentors and what happened next. Nick tells a great story about seeing Tiger Woods for the first time at Q School in 1998 and explains why he was there given he had won the US Masters in 1997! What a weekend! The Open was great, with some exceptional golf played. Congratulations to Ryggs Johnston, Jiyai Shin, and Simon Seungmin Lee.We're live from Titleist HQ surrounded by about a million boxes of Pro V1's and the simulator right behind us. We start with the Open and Johnston - his 'classic college swing', how he's come out of nowhere, and Mark asks Nick if he would have won if Kingston Heath had played like a typical sandbelt course. Nick gives his view and rationale. We discuss Lucas Herberts final day which went pear-shaped, with his emotions on full show. The format. Nick and Mark say it simply doesn't work, with Mark saying 'it is now beyond a joke and cannot continue, the format experiment is over'. He has a revised idea on what GA could do, involving piggybacking off LIV Adelaide. Nick is a fan of the idea and Mark gets to work on getting a board member on the pod in the next week or two to discuss it.SMS alert goes off, it's a voicemail from Pete in Gippsland who wants to discuss pace of play at the Open. It's Australian Open week, we're back at Kingston Heath and today we chat with Hollywood royalty, the brilliant actor Michael Peña. We're live at the Golf Clearance Outlet in Preston today, the latest store for them in their quest to take over the world, and it's a ripper. Nick is running late for the pod, he's been playing at Lonsdale Links in Victoria and has had a mad dash to get to the pod in time, thus his tardiness. Mark hasn't played Lonsdale Links, and given Nick was their all day as part of a left-handed day, he is the perfect person to give a snapshot of what he thought - and it's all positive. This is a fascinating bonus pod, we're at Flinders Golf Club overlooking the water, the waves, and of course the stunning golf course. And today we're going to learn about the course, it's history, some of the quirks of the course.We start by chatting with Andrew Kirby, who talks us through why he loves Flinders and why the course is so special. He says the views are better than Pebble Beach. There are also deep links between Flinders and Royal Melbourne, which we hear all about.Nick likens the view to the Monterey Peninsula, saying you could almost be there. Nick asks Andrew about the legendary Peter Thomson's history with Flinders, and Andrew explains the origins of that.Mark then brings up the trees. Of course he does. The beautiful Cypress trees. They may be imported, but they're now part of the fabric and they serve a very practical purpose at Flinders, which we hear about.Nick says Flinders has a great collection of Par 3's, and that the 12th hole - called Aunt Sally - is a particularly tough one. The names of the holes are full of character, and Andrew tells us about a plan, years ago, to remove a couple of the holes and the protests that occurred at the time. One of the holes is called the 'Coffin Hole', and we find out how that name came about.After the turn we chat to club captain Phil Hurley about the course renovation and the thoughts behind that, and how important it is to retain the magic of the course. Phil says that it has proven to be extremely hard to break par at Flinders, and that few do. After a massive weekend of golf with the Presidents Cup terrible, then great, then underwhelming, we're emotionally drained. But, not drained enough that we didn't want to get together to analyse everything that happened.Through this bonus pod we run through each day's scores and what happened.Nick and Mark were both pissed after day one, but excited after day two. Day one was 'a disaster', but day two huge, and as Nick pointed out the crowd showing up clearly made a difference. This week we kick off with Nick and Mark discussing the Scheffler/Rory McIlroy vs Koepka/DeChambeau, Mark is excited about the prospect, Nick will watch the highlights.We chat about the first couple of LIV tournaments next year, Adelaide is second and Riyadh is first....unhelpfully none of us know where Riyadh is or how to spell it...so we muddle through and figure it out together.Nick and Mark discuss the Presidents Cup teams, and Nick believes there are some players harshly done by - Cam Davis the obvious one for him. Both Nick and Mark believe the Presidents Cup would be better if the teams were mixed Men and Women. Mark reckons that if the internationals get 'pummelled' again, it can't continue as the Cup will have become a laughing stock.They name who would be their international team were it mixed.Mark then, jokingly (we think), says that if Bernhard Langer keeps playing we'll end up with a Weekend at Bernies situation. As we go to The Turn, we discuss seeing Australian young gun Jordan Bovalina in the cafe at Golf Australia Headquarters, and decide to hit him up for a chat. He can't today as it is his girlfriend's birthday, but we lock in a time to chat later this week....bonus pod on the way.
