31: Principal April McKoy Robinson on Building a School that Truly Edifies and Educates Its Students
April McKoy Robinson's success story as principal and founder of the award-winning UA Gateway School of Technology high school in New York City is an unlikely one. As an immigrant from Jamaica, April's time in school once she came to America heavily influenced her. While she flourished due to attentive and brutally honest teachers in elementary school, she struggled at Bronx Science -- her high-achieving high school. Not because she wasn't bright, but because of a system that largely ignored the brilliance of her and the other children of color attending. April graduated and went on the college at Hampton University and grad school at NYU in spite of this. And today, she dedicates her life to leveling the playing field for her students, preparing them in meaningful ways for life and their futures, and recognizing the brilliant light in each of them. Hear why April passionately believes that a child's demography should not dictate your destiny, the best thing about teaching and the must-read books that she recommends for every educator. 30: The Importance of Breathing Space for You and Your Business
I almost didn't make it. It's an annual trip my girls – my best friends from my college days at Hampton University – and I take to Martha's Vineyard each August for the past 3 years. But this summer, I was going to skip it. Why? Because I didn't have the space for it. Or so I thought. I convinced myself just a week out from the trip that I needed to sit this year out and stay cramped up in my 2-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn working, hard, on my podcast, on my business, on everything else that I am creating. I saw this as the sacrifice I needed to make to "make things work." How could I allow myself to take a trip now with so much on the line? Doing so would mean I'm not serious about this work. Right? Thank God, that those same best friends weren't having it. They respectfully supported my decision, but each in their own way nudged me to make a different choice. And that choice, as you will hear in this episode has done more for me and my business than I ever could have imagined. All because I gave myself some much needed space. On this episode you'll learn the importance of giving yourself the space to… Be you and exploreBe around people who lift you upBe with people who allow YOU space to do what you need to doBreak shitTo ask questionTo not know the answers and to LIVE the questionTo see just how far your business will take you and see it in action Thank you for listening! 25: How Your Period Affects Your Business with Stasha Washburn
ELet's face it, ladies, there's something about that time of the month that makes us crazy, crampy, irritable, sleepy, creative, horny, hungry… and that barely scratches the surface. 16: Taking Inspired Action, Showing True Grit and Paving a Way with J.J. Gray Shoes Creator Jessica Perdomo
Shoe designer Jessica Perdomo is not only an example of resilience and determination ("I can't tell you how many stores I got kicked out of," she says), she is also an example of someone who is not afraid to take inspired action. Or maybe, at times, she is afraid, but she does it anyway, and this makes her courageous as hell! Jessica is the founder of the incredibly gorgeous footwear line, J.J. Gray, which features riding boots and oxfords made exclusively by a family of third generation artisans in the south of Spain. She launched the line with just $800 in 2014 (just enough to cover legal fees for her business), and has since received coveted mentions in fashion biz powerhouse publications, such as Vogue and Footwear News. Raised without many resources by her Dominican grandparents in Queens after her mother passed away, Jessica started working at age 13, and hasn't stopped since. But it's the story of the shoe -- both at the early start of her career and as the spark that ignited her business -- that has been pivotal in her journey. What I love most about Jessica from the moment I first spoke with her is her grit and authenticity, not only in how she is building her business, but in how she is clearly creating a space for herself and for other young people who may have grown up in tough situations and never been exposed to the possibilities of entrepreneurship. Jessica says she plans to change that. I believe her. I believe you will, too. On this episode, you'll learn: Thoughts become things.Your past does not define your future. The importance of heeding the signs the universe sends your way.Why it's a good idea to test your market -- even if you start with family and friends."If you can't control your emotions, you can't control your money." 12: Making the Tough Choice Between the Business You Want and the Life You Lead with Tanya Alvarez
By age 25, Tanya Alvarez's first business, Blink Ads, generated more than $1 million in revenue within the first year, and she was already thinking about launching her next ventures. She went on to successfully launch two other companies – Spokesmoms and La Cosmopolatina -- but even with that success, the Miami native, who had already worked at four startups by then, said that comparison mode made her think she still hadn't done enough, and she began to consider how much time and commitment it would take to continue to grow her businesses, and whether or not she wanted to sacrifice her personal life to achieve that. In this conversation, Tanya openly shares how she made tough decisions, and walked away from her businesses, to create the life she wanted, how she set aside ego to truly see what kind of business would fuel her. Now Tanya is committed to helping other entrepreneurs reach their highest through her new company OwnersUp, which is an online accountability platform for entrepreneurs. 9: Vision Boards, Saying Yes and Letting Go with Barbara Biziou
Say "yes." Spiritual teacher Barbara Biziou has taught me, and thousands of her students around the world (Donna Karan and Gabby Bernstein among them), many things over the years, but one of the most powerful for me is embracing the possibility of "yes." Barbara says we, as creative women looking for experiences, say it far too little. Barbara is a student of global culture and rituals who uses "practical spirituality" to support you in creating an extraordinary life. I met her in 2010 during a time I said "yes" when, after a dinner in NYC, I agreed to walk a friend of mine to one of her events. I had never heard of her – or vision board workshops – but after standing there and hearing what it was all about, I said "yes," even though I didn't know exactly what it was. I've been creating vision boards with Barbara every year ever since – for my personal life and for my business. On the episode you'll learn: While you reap what you sow, it won't grow overnight.Vision boards are not magic. The power of rituals, language and speaking in the present with "I am..."Why you should write down your goals.
