S15 Ep 793793: Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) Explained... Free Water?

With 45 percent of U.S. water sources containing toxic contaminants, according to the EPA, access to clean drinking water is becoming increasingly uncertain. Worse still, according to a UN study, over 40% of the world's water bodies are considered severely polluted, meaning a significant portion of Earth's water is contaminated; this translates to around 1 in 3 people not having access to safe drinking water. Traditional water treatment methods rely on filtering or distilling existing sources like lakes, rivers, or oceans. But a new approach is gaining traction—one that pulls water directly from the air.Alexander Von Welczeck, Founder and CEO of SkyH2O, explains how Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) is reshaping water access. By capturing humidity and converting it into purified water, AWG provides a decentralized supply of water that reduces dependence on our failing infrastructure. As concerns grow over PFAS (forever chemicals) and other pollutants in municipal systems, AWG offers a safer alternative with wide-ranging applications. As water scarcity grows, AWG is emerging as a scalable solution for industries, communities, and facilities that need reliable access to clean water in an increasingly water stressed world. Tune-in to hear how it really works and just how close we are to pulling water right out of the air!Are there other technologies you’ve scouted on the frontlines of the Clean Energy Revolution that you think we should be covering here on SunCast?Hit us up - [email protected] with your feedback & recommendations.Check out OpenSolar OS 3.0 at: https://suncast.media/opensolarIf you want to connect with today's guest, you’ll find links to their contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://suncast.media/episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America!SunCast is also sponsored by Nextpower! You can learn more about all the sponsors who help make this show free for you at www.suncast.media/sponsors.Remember, you can always find resources, learn more about today’s guest and explore recommendations, book links, and more than 875 other founder stories and startup advice at www.suncast.media.Subscribe to Valence, our weekly LinkedIn Newsletter, and learn the elements of compelling storytelling: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/valence-content-that-connects-7145928995363049472/You can connect with me, Nico Johnson, on:Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/nicomeoLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickalus

S15 Ep 792792: What Is Distributed Generation? [Jorge Vargas, Aspen Power]

The distributed generation market is shifting rapidly as capital tightens, power prices rise, and smaller developers bump up against capital and market constraints. Independent power producers (IPPs) like Aspen Power are stepping in to bridge the gap—partnering with developers, securing financing, and scaling solar assets in key markets. But what does it take to succeed in today’s distributed energy sector? And what does distributed energy mean in today’s evolving market?Jorge Vargas, co-founder and CEO of Aspen Power, has spent over two decades in structured finance and solar project development, with past roles at Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and Lennar Homes. Aspen Power emerged from his work at Energy Impact Partners, where he identified the need for a full-scale IPPs focused on distributed generation. Backed by private equity firm Carlyle, Aspen Power has grown rapidly, now managing over 250MW of assets. Jorge breaks down how they are reshaping distributed generation through innovative financing, project buybacks, repowering existing assets, and long-term investment in clean energy infrastructure. Expect to learn:Why smaller developers are struggling to access capital—and how Aspen is helpingThe four market segments driving distributed generation todayHow Aspen’s buyback strategy is unlocking new value in older solar assetsThe role of Safe Harbor in securing ITC benefits amid policy uncertaintyThe biggest regulatory and financial challenges facing developers in 2025Are there other technologies you’ve scouted on the frontlines of the Clean Energy Revolution that you think we should be covering here on SunCast?Hit us up - [email protected] with your feedback & recommendations.Check out OpenSolar OS 3.0 at: https://suncast.media/opensolarIf you want to connect with today's guest, you’ll find links to their contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://suncast.media/episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America!SunCast is also sponsored by Nextpower!

S15 Ep 791791: Why Hydrogen (+Solar) Can Replace Natural Gas

Industrial facilities depend heavily on natural gas for steam production; in California, food processing, which is one of the largest users of steam, consumes an incredible amount of energy as a result. Because the price of steam is directly tied to the price of natural gas, industries face volatile costs that can directly impact competitiveness. And there are precious few alternatives for producing the volume of steam required to keep our food industry productive.  Yet, by producing hydrogen on-site via solar power, along with high-efficiency hydrogen boilers, that paradigm can shift significantly.  As a result, companies can stabilize costs and rethink how industrial steam is supplied and used.Jim Tyler, CEO of Erthos, explains why industrial steam is the key to making hydrogen cost-competitive, how compressed gas storage compares to batteries, and how a closed-loop system can improve efficiency.  Erthos has developed a hydrogen boiler that operates at 98% efficiency, outperforming traditional natural gas systems. He also shares why selling steam, rather than hydrogen itself, is the smartest business model for scaling the technology.Expect to learn:What ‘Fire Water’ isHow green, high-purity hydrogen can reach cost parity with brown hydrogen from natural gasWhy hydrogen, when paired with solar, can compete with natural gas for industrial steam productionThe breakthrough in Erthos’s hydrogen boiler designAre there other technologies you’ve scouted on the frontlines of the Clean Energy Revolution that you think we should be covering here on SunCast?Hit us up - [email protected] with your feedback & recommendations.Check out OpenSolar OS 3.0 at: https://suncast.media/opensolarIf you want to connect with today's guest, you’ll find links to their contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://suncast.media/episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America!SunCast is also sponsored by Nextpower!

S15 Ep 788788: Solar = Hydrogen? Can Erthos Use Ultra-Low-Cost Solar To Unlock Hydrogen? Jim Tyler’s Convinced

What if the key to solving our rising materials costs and hurdles to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries lies in a radical shift in thinking—laying solar panels directly on the ground and using the cheap electrons they produce to make hydrogen? When I first heard of Erthos, I thought, like many of you  I’m sure, “What a radical idea! Will that even work?  Lay the panels directly on the ground???”  Yet, the more I learned about the company, it’s leadership, and their approach to creating the cheapest cost of solar energy, I decided I needed to suspend my reservations and go see it for myself.  And, to my surprise, Jim Tyler and his all-star leadership team didn’t even want to talk to me about the “earth-mounted solar” innovation, and instead, focused much of the attention and time on their next big move - Hydrogen!Jim Tyler, CEO of Erthos, has been on a mission to reduce the cost of solar for a long time. He’s been part of some of the most iconic and important innovations in the solar industry, and was one of the early pioneers to focus on driving cost out of the installation process. With his background in semiconductors, industrial energy, and food processing, Jim saw an even bigger opportunity: using low-cost, DC-coupled solar to produce hydrogen in the most cost-effective way possible. In this conversation, Jim explains why Erthos’ culture of breaking industry norms is now driving them into hydrogen—and how their disruptive approach could redefine the future of clean energy. Regardless what you think of Erthos, there’s no denying that Jim and his team are yet again shaking up the industry and forcing people to think different.Expect to learn:Why earth-mounted solar could push the cost of solar energy closer to zero. Why industrial steam—one of the largest energy demands globally—could be the breakthrough use case for green hydrogen. How Erthos’ created a direct DC-to-hydrogen system that eliminates inefficienciesWhy investors from Tesla, SpaceX, and First Solar are betting on this model. Why the Navajo Nation could become a key hub for renewable energy manufacturing—and how solar could drive jobs and economic growth in the region.I’m curious to hear your thoughts, skeptical or otherwise, once you’ve had a chance to give this a listen! And we have some fun b-roll from or visit to Jim’s office, testing lab and skunk-works facility where they’re building their hydrogen electrolyzer prototypes.Check it out on our YouTube channel! Are there other technologies you’ve scouted on the frontlines of the Clean Energy Revolution that you think we should be covering here on SunCast?Hit us up - [email protected] with your feedback & recommendations.Check out OpenSolar OS 3.0 at: https://suncast.media/opensolarIf you want to connect with today's guest, you’ll find links to their contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://suncast.media/episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America!SunCast is also sponsored by Nextpower!

S15 Ep 785785: The 74MW Solar Farm in My Backyard

What is the real economic impact of a utility-scale solar farm on rural America? That’s one of the questions I had in mind when I visited one of the largest solar projects recently inaugurated right in my own home state of North Carolina.  As one of the largest renewable energy companies in the world, EDP Renewables has expanded its footprint into North Carolina with the 74-megawatt Misenheimer Solar Park, a project big enough to power 12,000 homes while generating more than $30 million in long-term benefits to the local community. Built on rolling terrain the site required innovative problem-solving and strong local partnerships, and years of consensus building before the first pile was driven into the ground. Navigating remote collaboration, regulatory hurdles, and evolving construction challenges, EDP successfully brought its first solar facility in the state online, and I got a first-hand look at what utility-scale solar could mean for rural America. In this episode, I ask three individuals involved in the project to help break down the tactics behind making a utility-scale solar project successful:Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America, shares how EDP builds lasting community relationships and approaches market expansion.Emily Morilla, Priority Project Manager, explains how the team managed project acquisition, permitting, and construction readiness.Sabrina Fleischman, Development Project Manager, details the strategies for securing land agreements, maintaining regulatory compliance, and keeping the project on track. We have a lot of work to do if we’re going to realize our renewable energy future on a timescale that helps mitigate climate emergencies; yet with scores of projects like this one coming online, why do we still so seldom hear about it? This conversation offers actionable insights for developers, project managers, and anyone looking to understand the complexities of bringing large-scale solar to new markets, but also provides an interesting discussion point about how we are telling our clean energy story. Hear how the EDP team tackled challenges, refined their approach, and executed a project that will deliver clean energy for years to come, then let’s discover new ways to tell that story to the millions of Americans who still believe this is somehow not an economically viable path to our energy security.

S15 Ep 784784: This Chip Could Save Billions in Energy | Udi Daon of Daanaa

What if it were actually possible to power your EV from the sun collected on it’s surface?  Or what if you were not constrained by only one battery chemistry type but could mix chemistries?   Want to charge 400 volts with a 3V unit?  For 150 years, electrical engineers have relied on magnetic induction for power conversion, using coils and magnetic structures to transfer energy.  These constraints result in energy waste, size restrictions, and chemistry challenges, preventing seamless transfer between low and high voltages. But what if you could control, manipulate, and augment the near-field reactive space by shaping it to do whatever you need?  If you wrapped that kind of power up in a single element, it could deliver a potent “omni-converter” that could do things literally impossible by other technologies.Udi Daon, CEO of Daanaa Resolution Inc., is on a mission to eliminate power conversion inefficiencies, and redefining what’s possible in energy efficiency. This serial entrepreneur quickly identified Daanaa’s groundbreaking technology to revolutionize power conversion as soon as he saw it, which is why he was the fist investor and soon took the reins as CEO. Under his leadership, the company has developed a device that breaks free from magnetic reliance, instead using the entire electromagnetic spectrum, manipulating near-field reactive electromagnetic space to achieve ultra-efficient conversion. This technology can transform very low voltage into high voltage (and vice versa) in a single step with over 95% efficiency, opening up new possibilities for electric vehicles, solar panels, and data centers…and all in a package the size of your car’s key fob!Tune-in as I tease out:How Daanaa’s technology enables efficient power transfer without relying on traditional magnetic induction methods. The practical benefits of converting ultra-low voltage from solar cells into usable energy for EVs.How Daanaa’s “omnipotency” boosts energy output from uneven surfaces with single-stage hyperconversion and bidirectional power.Udi Daon’s unique approach to scaling deep-tech solutions and aligning teams for success. When I first met Udi (at Intersolar N. America a little over a year ago!) I was as skeptical as the next person when he told me what his pocket-sized device could achieve. And Udi says that this disbelief has been the hallmark (and primary hurdle) preventing their technology from scaling.  But I, for one, think they’re on the cusp of something truly remarkable.  And you get to say “I heard it first, on SunCast!” ;-) Oh yeah, he’s also got a Lot to share about startup culture, lessons learned, etc from dozens of companies he’s founded or funded. You will definitely get your money’s worth with this one!Are there other technologies you’ve scouted on the frontlines of the Clean Energy Revolution that you think we should be covering here on SunCast?Hit us up - [email protected] with your feedback & recommendations.Check out OpenSolar OS 3.0 at: https://suncast.media/opensolarIf you want to connect with today's guest, you’ll find links to their contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://suncast.media/episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America!SunCast is also sponsored by Nextpower!

S15 Ep 781781: AC Vs DC-Coupled Battery Systems with Adam Knudsen Of Dynapower

It is estimated that by 2027 nearly half of all new solar installations will have energy storage attached, and today’s guest, Adam Knudsen of Dynapower, asserts that almost half of those will have DC coupled storage. The choice between AC or DC coupled systems has become a critical consideration for developers, utilities, and energy planners. While AC coupled systems have long dominated the market due to their established infrastructure and reliability, DC coupled technology is quickly gaining momentum. DC coupling reduces energy losses, simplifies system design, and requires less electrical infrastructure, so why has AC-coupled been so prevalent?Adam Knudsen, CEO of Dynapower, breaks down how DC coupling is transforming modern energy storage systems. For over 60 years, Dynapower has led advancements in power electronics that address scalability and reliability issues. These innovations have enabled new applications, such as fast-charging for electric vehicles, supporting localized grids through microgrids, and integrating hydrogen production into renewable energy systems. Nico and Adam discuss when and why to use DC versus AC-coupled in clean energy applications. Expect to learn:Key differences between AC- and DC-coupled systemsWhy DC coupling minimizes energy losses and simplifies system designWhy DC coupling is now scalable and viable for widespread adoption. Why AC coupling has heretofore been the market leading approach. What has changed to allow DC coupling to become more scalableTune in and learn how to decide which application might be right for your system.

S15 Ep 780780: Energy in the Trump Administration

Join us for an in-depth discussion with three different perspectives on the future of energy. We'll explore the potential impacts of Trump's policies on renewable energy, fossil fuels, and the environment. With the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) driving historic clean energy investments, we're at a critical juncture as Trump begins his second term. Tune in as we navigate the complex landscape of the energy industry's future. The solar industry has proven its resilience time and again. During Trump’s first term, solar capacity in the U.S. surged by 128%, exceeding 100 GW despite a federal focus on fossil fuels, according to SEIA. That same spirit of adaptation is palpable today, as the clean energy sector braces for a second term marked by deregulation, energy “trade-offs,” and a growing corporate appetite for renewables. David Roberts, respected journalist and progenitor of Volts.wtf, explores the unpredictability of the Trump’s energy policies and how coalitions have become a vital counterbalance to federal uncertainty. Travis Kavulla, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at NRG Energy, provides a detailed look at regulatory developments, including the potential impact of Chris Wright’s leadership at DOE and how  the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) evolving role could shape market dynamics.Aaron Nichols, Marketing and Advocacy Specialist at Exact Solar, scoured dozens of articles on the subject and reflects on how Trump’s initial term unexpectedly mobilized the solar industry, sparking collaboration that continues to fuel growth. Despite the challenges, there are significant opportunities. Corporate renewable investments, driven by the AI boom and energy-hungry data centers, are reshaping market demand. Industry coalitions are demonstrating the power of collective advocacy in influencing policy and preserving growth. Federal agencies like FERC and DOE are at the forefront of decisions that could redefine the balance between fossil fuels and clean energy. The solar sector is once again proving its resilience, channeling innovation and determination to meet the moment. With Inauguration Day just around the corner, the direction of U.S. energy policy hangs in the balance. Will deregulation spur clean energy growth, or will shifting priorities pose new challenges? S15 Ep 779779: Cary Hayes (REC Solar) Interviews Alex Honnold - Why Corporate Philanthropy Matters (and why you should be doing it)

Increasingly, it seems that corporate philanthropy (and even personal giving) are reactive rather than proactive.  Today’s episode challenges that notion with an insightful look into the relationship REC Solar’s Cary Hayes has formed with Alex Honnold and his Honnold Foundation, which REC has supported for years with both cash and in-kind donations.  Why does Cary believe this is a meaningful part of their annual marketing budget? Hear Cary, Alex & Nico discuss why this is an overlooked marketing line item for most companies, and consider for yourself if supporting non-profits should be more prevalent in yours or anyone’s annual budget.Alex Honnold is best known for his daring free solo climbs, but his true passion lies in bringing clean energy to the world's most underserved communities. In a compelling conversation with Cary Hayes, President-America's at REC, Honnold shares the origin and evolution of the Honnold Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to solar power. By focusing on grassroots, "shovel-ready" projects, the foundation empowers local organizations to lead transformative initiatives, from cooperative microgrids in Puerto Rico to solar installations in remote African villages. Honnold’s journey—from dirtbag climber living in a van to International superstar spearheading a $50 million project pipeline—underscores the importance of starting small and prioritizing tangible impact over perfection.Following the Hayes/Honnold conversation, host Nico Johnson expands on this vision in a 1:1 with Cary reflecting on the solar industry’s unique opportunity to amplify its influence through philanthropy. Cary shares insights from REC Solar’s collaboration with the Honnold Foundation and explores how partnerships like these align corporate innovation with community resilience. Nico challenges the solar sector to move beyond profit-driven mindsets, arguing for a mission-first approach that redirects resources toward high-impact projects. Together, they discuss the power of storytelling, collaboration, and leadership to inspire a more sustainable and equitable future. It’s time to put our shoulders to the plow, align our resources with our mission, and drive meaningful, community-focused change. We all have a role to play in creating a more sustainable and equitable future.

S15 Ep 778778: Alex Honnold: Life After Free Solo

Alex Honnold, the world-famous rock climber and philanthropist, has pushed the physical boundaries of human potential with his climbing pursuits, but in his travels to some of the world’s most remote and beautiful locations he’s come face-to-face with one of the world’s most urgent challenges: energy access.Alex has never been one to stand by and let others do the hard work. Before his rise to fame with his harrowing, albeit Oscar-winning performance on Yosemite’s most famous of all big walls, El Capitan, Honnold has had a soft spot for those without energy access. He points out that at its most fundamental level energy brings opportunity. That’s why he created his eponymous foundation to help expand solar energy access and empower underserved communities while promoting conservation in some of the most remote and vulnerable regions on the planet. And he’s been donating a third of his income to every year to help underserved communities acquire solar energy since long before achieving international recognition for his climbing feats. If you’ve been paying attention over the last few years, though, Honnold’s “objectives” (climber speak for projects) have blended the thrill of climbing with the responsibility of creating a lasting impact by helping preserve the environment in more ways than just environmental protection. Thanks to Cary Hayes & the REC Solar team, who have been an ongoing corporate partner for Honnold Foundation, Nico recently had a chance to spend the day with Honnold at his home gym outside Las Vegas, NV. (yes, you read that right - we actually got to go to his HOME climbing gym, in his garage, and climb with him! More on that in a forthcoming LI Post…) In this wide-ranging conversation, Alex offers a rare perspective on how personal ambition can align with global progress, and why he believes solar power is a great social justice tool. From free soloing ascents of big walls to addressing energy inequity, Honnold is truly reaching new heights. Tune in to discover:How he balances family life, climbing, and building the Honnold FoundationHow Big Horn sheep helped shape his outlook on lifeWhy solar energy provides more leverage to address social inequalityHow lessons from climbing translate to building lasting impact and entrepreneurshipAnd much, much more (really, we learned a lot from this #SolarWarrior!)Are there other technologies you’ve scouted on the frontlines of the Clean Energy Revolution that you think we should be covering here on SunCast?Hit us up - [email protected] with your feedback & recommendations.Check out OpenSolar OS 3.0 at: https://suncast.media/opensolarIf you want to connect with today's guest, you’ll find links to their contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://suncast.media/episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America!SunCast is also sponsored by Nextpower!

S15 Ep 758758: Transforming Transport: Lime Co-Founder On E-Mobility’s Role In Decarbonization

About a third of global carbon emissions come from transportation, with most generated by private vehicles. Cities face a critical challenge: the “last mile” problem—how to efficiently connect people from transit hubs, like bus and train stations, to their homes or workplaces. When public transit falls short, commuters often turn to cars, increasing traffic, pollution, and emissions. Lime, a leader in micro-mobility, tackles this gap with e-bikes and e-scooters, offering a sustainable alternative for these short, essential urban trips. With over 500 million rides completed—covering more than a billion kilometers—Lime demonstrates how small shifts in behavior can make a big impact on decarbonization.Nico met with Andrew Savage, co-founder and VP of Sustainability of Lime, during a visit to Savage’s hometown of Burlington, VT.  Andrew draws from a career that spans solar energy, policy work, and government relations. Before joining Lime, Savage was a key figure at AllEarth Renewables, helping advance solar energy adoption in Vermont. He also served on political campaigns, advised mayors, and worked closely with Capitol Hill on policy initiatives. His deep expertise in environmental policy gave Savage a unique skillset to help steer Lime’s growth into 280 markets while keeping on pace with the company’s goal of net zero by 2030. Curious how a career can span multiple sectors and still hold a true-north of decarbonizing the grid?
