Ep 254Using Evidence-Based Medicine (& Social Media) to Improve Patient Care with Dr. Ken Milne
This episode is sponsored by Charm Economics– data-driven solutions for digital health & MedTech businesses. Dr. Block and his guest, Dr. Ken Milne, delve into the concept of knowledge translation and the time it takes for new information to be integrated into clinical practice. They reference a famous paper that found it takes an average of 17 years for clinically relevant information to reach the patient's bedside. However, the hosts believe that this time frame can be shortened with the help of social media and evidence-based medicine. They emphasize the importance of evidence-based medicine but also note that it should not be the only factor in decision-making. The hosts also discuss their checklist for evaluating the validity of studies and how they use their podcast to share new information with their audience. Overall, the hosts believe that shortening the time it takes for new information to be integrated into clinical practice can lead to improved patient outcomes. The episode also touches on the potential benefits of vitamin C in treating sepsis patients. One study conducted at Dr. Paul Merrick's Institution showed a significant mortality benefit in patients who were given a cocktail of thiamine, Vitamin C, and hydrocortisone. However, the study was not a randomized control trial and was before-and-after observational, leading to skepticism about the conclusions. Over the next few years, properly designed randomized control trials were conducted and found that vitamin C had no significant impact on sepsis patients. Therefore, while there was initial interest in the potential benefits of vitamin C in treating sepsis, further research has shown that it is not an effective treatment. Ep 242Connect with your Patients Online with Bryan Cush, MS
How do you connect to your patients and your community? Dr. Block welcomes Bryan Cush, MS, Co-Founder of Tidal, a company that works on helping physicians connect to the right healthcare audience. This experience taught him how intimidated and confused patients and caregivers can feel. And he learned first-hand the stresses and challenges laced throughout the system. As a result, he wants to create systems where patients can more easily identify the right doctor on the first try. He is determined to help people avoid the headaches of the healthcare runaround while helping his clients gain increasing success. Bryan also understands the internal mechanisms of the industry, which allows him to bring value to a range of healthcare-aligned enterprises. Ep 214Physicians Who Love to Smoke - with Jimmy Turner, MD, Physician Philosopher
Many of you know Dr. Jimmy Turner. He calls himself the Physician Philosopher and this is his second time on the show. In the first episode with him, we talked about his first book, The Physician Philosopher’s Guide to Personal Finance and he just published Determined: How Burned Out Doctors Can Thrive In a Broken Medical System. He also runs the alpha coaching experience and hosts the Physician Philosopher podcast. But we didn’t talk about ANY OF THAT. He recently bought a smoker and I love smoking meat, so I thought we’d chat about smoking. I’m on Long Island and he’s in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, so I thought I’d learn something from him. As it turns out, I spent most of the episode teaching him! This is my first episode that has NOTHING to do with medicine and I hope it is a nice mental break for you. https://twitter.com/TPP_MD https://www.instagram.com/tpp_md/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jimmy-turner-md-59051355/ This medical podcast is your physician mentor to fill the gaps in your medical education.
