Originally from Ottawa, Canada and now based in New York, he has presented work at the Capezio Ace Awards, Fire Island Dance Festival, Battery Dance Festival, New Victory Dance and created work for the Joffrey Ballet School and the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. He has danced on television programs such as Canada’s Got Talent, Degrassi, The Strain, Over the Rainbow and Canada’s Smartest Person and has choreographed music videos for artists such as HAAI, Lights, Ria Mae and Tyler Shaw. Fourteen years ago in March of 2008, a tumor the size of a grapefruit was found resting on his heart. He was 25. The diagnosis: stage III acute non-Hodgkin's T-lymphoblastic lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer that would require equally aggressive chemotherapy treatment over the next two years of his life. With scholarships from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Carole Bayer Sager Foundation, he was able to pursue a degree in songwriting and it was there where he found life-changing mentors in the late Glenn Frey and hit songwriter Phil Galdston, self-released his first EP “Dragons in the Sky”, had a #3 hit in Australia with “Summertime”, opened for The Eagles at the Beacon Theatre, performed in the off-Broadway and West End hit Close to You: Burt Bacharach Reimagined, learned some more instruments (he plays 10 now), and graduated with one of America’s first Masters Degrees in Songwriting. His songwriting and performance abilities have earned multiple awards, including the prestigious Abe Olman Scholarship from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and he was a semi-finalist ranking in the 2020 International Songwriting Contest. Lisa and Douglas dig in and talk about navigating rejection, imposter syndrome, moving and healing audiences and the power of stories and family. Douglas Lyons is no stranger to the Broadway stage and in addition to his talents as a playwright, he is an accomplished actor, writer, director, composer and teacher. His Broadway acting credits include the original cast of Beautiful and The Book of Mormon and National Tours of Rent and Dreamgirls. His writing credits include Fraggle Rock on Apple TV, Polkadots Off Broadway and Five Points which is now in development with Hamilton's Andy Blankenbuehler. As a composer/lyricist, he is half of the writing team Lyons & Pakchar. Their work has been featured on CBS's “Sunday Morning Show,” Carnegie Hall's “Voices of Hope Festival,” Lincoln Center’s “Broadway Songbook Series,” and more. Douglas is the founder of The Next Wave Initiative, a scholarship program dedicated to supporting the future of Black Theater artists.
