Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 16
“Neo-Modernism or the Undermining of the Faith” The Revolution, it has been said, expresses “the hatred of all order that has not been established by man, and in which he is not both king and god.” At its origin we find that pride which had already been the cause of Adam’s sin. The revolution withinIn...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 15
“The Marriage of the Church and the Revolution” The Revolution, it has been said, expresses “the hatred of all order that has not been established by man, and in which he is not both king and god.” At its origin we find that pride which had already been the cause of Adam’s sin. The revolution...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 14
“Vatican II is the French Revolution in the Church” The parallel I have drawn between the crisis in the Church and the French Revolution is not simply a metaphorical one. The influence of the philosophies of the eighteenth century, and of the upheaval that they produced in the world, has continued down to our times....

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 13
“Religious Liberty, Collegiality Equality, Ecumenical Fraternity” How does it happen that the gates of hell are now causing us so much trouble? The Church has always been disturbed by persecution and heresies, by conflicts with temporal powers, sometimes by immoral conduct of the clergy, sometimes even of Popes. But this time the crisis seems to...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 12
“Comrades and Fellow Travelers” Among all the documents of the Council, it was the schema on religious liberty which led to the most acrimonious Let us take up where we left off. Christian common sense is offended in every way by this new religion. Catholics are exposed to desacralization on all sides; everything has been...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 11
“Religious Liberty” Among all the documents of the Council, it was the schema on religious liberty which led to the most acrimonious discussions. This is easily explained by the influence of the liberals and the interest taken in this matter by the hereditary enemies of the Church. Now, twenty years later, we see that our...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 10
“Ecumenism” In this confusion of ideas (in which some Catholics now seem to be quite at ease), there is a tendency especially dangerous to the Faith, the more so because it masquerades as charity. The word which appeared in 1927 during a congress held at Lausanne, Switzerland, would have put Catholics on their guard if...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 9
“The New Theology” Among The ravages caused by the new catechism are already visible in the generation which has been exposed to it. As required by the Sacred Congregation for Seminaries and Universities since 1970, I had included in the plan of studies for my seminaries one year’s spirituality at the beginning of the course....

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 8
“The New Catechisms” Among Catholics, I have often heard and continue to hear the remark, “They want to impose a new religion on us.” Is this an exaggeration? The modernists, who have infiltrated themselves everywhere in the Church and lead the dance, sought at first to reassure us: “Oh no, you have got the impression...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 7
“The New Priests” To the man in the street, even the most indifferent to religious questions, it is obvious that there are fewer and fewer priests, and the newspapers regularly remind him of the fact. It is over fifteen years ago since the book appeared with the title Tomorrow a Church without Priests?Yet the situation...

SSPX Superior Speaks about Tradition Today – Angelus Press Conference Talk 2021

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 6
“The New Forms of Baptism, Marriage, Penance, and Extreme Unction” The Catholic, whether he be regularly practicing or one who goes to church for the great moments of life, finds himself asking such basic questions as, “What is baptism?”It is a new phenomenon, for not so long ago anyone could answer that, and anyway, nobody...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 5
“You’re A Dinosaur!” In preparation for the 1981 Eucharistic Congress, a questionnaire was distributed, the first question of which was: “Of these two definitions: ‘The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass’ and ‘Eucharistic Meal,’ which one do you adopt spontaneously?” There is a great deal that could be said about this way of questioning Catholics, giving...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 4
“The Mass of All Time vs. The Mass of Our Time” In preparation for the 1981 Eucharistic Congress, a questionnaire was distributed, the first question of which was: “Of these two definitions: ‘The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass’ and ‘Eucharistic Meal,’ which one do you adopt spontaneously?” There is a great deal that could be...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 3
“What They Are Doing to the Mass” I have before me some photos published in Catholic newspapers representing the Mass as it is now often said. Looking at the first photo I find it difficult to understand at what moment of the Holy Sacrifice it has been taken. Behind an ordinary wooden table, which does...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 2
“They are Changing Our Religion!” Firstly, I must dispel a misunderstanding so as not to have to return to it. I am not the head of a movement, even less the head of a particular church. I am not, as they never stop writing, “the leader of the traditionalists.” They have come to describe certain...

Open Letter to Confused Catholics: Chapter 1
“Why are Catholics Confused? Who can deny that Catholics in the latter part of the twentieth century are confused? A glance at what has happened in the Church over the past twenty years is enough to convince anyone that this is a relatively recent phenomenon. Only a short time ago the path was clearly marked:...

Crisis Series #50 with Superior General of SSPX: What is the Solution to the Crisis?
We thought there would be no one better to give the final word in this series than the Superior General of the SSPX, Don Davide Pagliarani. He graciously agreed to take some time from his duties to give us his thoughts on what the traditional restoration of the Church might look like after this major upheaval, and finally, what the answer – what is the solution to the Crisis in the Church. We’d like to say thank you to all the priests who have joined us during this series, and to you for listening and watching – now let’s join Father Pagliarani.See all the episodes at http://sspxpodcast.com Subscribe to the SSPX YouTube channel here:https://www.youtube.com/c/SSPXNewsEnglish?sub_confirmation=1Stay Connected on Social Media:Twitter: https://twitter.com/SSPXENFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SSPXEN/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sspx_en/SSPX News Website:https://fsspx.news/enVisit our website: https://sspx.org/en

Crisis Series #49: Father, What Can I Do About the Crisis in the Church?
Today we'll ask, "Father, what can I do about the Crisis in the Church?" Is there anything I can do about the Crisis? Do I just hunker down in my home and say the rosary? Do I move my family to a traditional Catholic compound and ignore everything that’s happening? Or should I take a more active role, speaking out, and fighting for the rights of the Church? We invited Fr. David Sherry, the Canadian District Superior for the SSPX to join us and give us what we all need right now – some simple, practical advice for what a lay person should be doing right now.The magazine recommended by Father: http://TheCatholicHome.ca See all our episodes, subscribe to the podcast, get questions answered, and help support this apostolate: http://sspxpodcast.com Subscribe to the SSPX YouTube channel here:https://www.youtube.com/c/SSPXNewsEnglish?sub_confirmation=1Stay Connected on Social Media:Twitter: https://twitter.com/SSPXENFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SSPXEN/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sspx_en/SSPX News Website:https://fsspx.news/enVisit our website: https://sspx.org/en00:00 - Opening0:01:00 - Introduction0:03:55 - Stay Calm0:12:29 - Get My House in Order0:15:27 - Follow What You Know Is True0:21:29 - Don't Jump to Conclusions0:36:00 - Be Part of a Catholic Community

Crisis Series #48: 4 Questions You Need to Ask About the Crisis
Whether you have seen every episode of this series so far, or have just seen a couple, or maybe none – this is likely the most important episode we’ve done so far. In the next hour and twenty minutes, Father Wiseman will break down the entire Crisis into 4 simple questions. If you answer yes to the first, we’ll move on to the second question, and so on. By the end, if you’ve said yes to all of them, well, congratulations – you hold the same positions that the Society of Saint Pius X does. Think of this as a choose your own adventure book, except it’s about your Faith, and the stakes are infinite.See all our episodes, subscribe to the podcast, get questions answered, and help support this apostolate: http://sspxpodcast.com Episodes for Further Review:#1: Is there a Crisis? https://youtu.be/SEiFVTuA9RY Modernism: #11 - How Pius X Combatted Modernism https://youtu.be/arSrVYNGzpYModernism: #12 - Modernist Catholics Aren't Catholic https://youtu.be/5kIdQSogXewModernism: #13 - Modernist Popes in Their Own Words https://youtu.be/fHSb-DWWeS0Vatican II: #17 - The Excellent Preparations for V. Interview: Fr. Onoda – Tradition and the History of Catholicism in Japan
We spoke with Fr. Thomas Onoda earlier in the Spring, just after the Society of Saint Pius X officially opened its first priory in Japan. We spoke with Father for just over 30 minutes or so about his story, the sometimes violent history of Catholicism in Japan, and what he sees for the future of his country. He asked me just before interview if he could say a few words about the special history of Nagasaki in Japan – as an American, I was not going to bring up the horrific bombing of Japan during World War II during this interview – I didn’t know what the proper boundaries are in this case, but I’m so glad he wanted to bring it up. When you hear it, I think you’ll agree it led to one of the most inspiring moments throughout all our episodes on this podcast.

Crisis Series #47: Am I Allowed to Attend an SSPX Mass?
“Is it ok for me to attend a Mass of the Society of Saint Pius X?” There are many “experts” who claim one – or several – of the following: 1. You can’t fulfill your Sunday obligation at an SSPX chapel. 2 - You could fulfill your obligation, but it would be sinful to go. 3 - it’s not a sin to attend, but be careful, it promotes a schismatic mentality. So in the conclusion of the Crisis in the Church Series’ study of the SSPX itself, we’ll answer those questions, and let you know why it’s actually…. Good to attend.

Crisis Series #46: What About the Other Traditional Mass Communities?
Among Traditional Catholics, there seems to be a lot of confusion about why there’s a division between the Society of Saint Pius X and these groups. On the surface, they look identical. Both say the Latin Mass, both are orthodox in their sacraments and teaching, the priests wear cassocks, etc. So what’s the problem with the Fraternity of Saint Peter, the Institute of Christ the King, and the others? Is it just a trad version of the Hatfields & McCoys? Fr McFarland explains why objectively, there’s a difference.

Crisis Series #45: Are the New Canonizations Infallible?
Don Tranquillo will join us once again to look at the question of Canonizations since the time of the Second Vatican Council. Are the New Canonizations infallible? To answer this, we’ll need to see whether or not Canonizations in the past were infallible. It’s commonly understood by most Catholics that Canonizations are one of the things that are infallibly proclaimed by the Pope. How then can we square this seeming infallibility with some of the new saints, who contradict previous saints?

Crisis Series #44: How Can the SSPX Justify What it Does?
Last week, we looked at the status of the Society of Saint Pius X. Given that there is no regular canonical status for the SSPX, how then, can the priests of the Society exercise their functions? Canon Law is pretty clear on this point – for a priest to exercise his ministry, he must be under the authority and direction of the local bishop, or at the least, under the direct supervision of the Vatican. Since that does not exist, how can the priests of the Society justify, in all good conscience, what they do? Are they simply disobedient rebels?

Crisis Series #43: Schismatic? Excommunicated? Irregular? What’s the Status of the SSPX?
Today we’ll dive into a question that is very confusing for a lot of faithful – and as you’ll see, it’s confusing for some within the Church itself – what is the official status of the Society of Saint Pius X within the Catholic Church? There are accusations that it is schismatic. Or at the least, that it has a “spirit of schism.” Another common accusation is that the Society is not part of the Catholic Church. There’s a lot of misinformation out there – let’s try to clear it up!

Crisis Series #42 with Bishop Fellay: Were the 1988 Consecrations Justified?
He, better than anyone, can help us understand what was happening during those pivotal days, and what was going through the mind of the Archbishop as he wrestled with this momentous decision. But besides having an interesting conversation about Church history with someone who was a part of it, we’re also going to ask His Excellency, how can the Society of Saint Pius X justify what the Archbishop did? On the surface, this was an act of disobedience against the Holy Father. According to the swift, severe response from the Vatican just days after, this was a schismatic act. We’ll welcome Bishop Fellay now to help us understand what happened:

Crisis Series #41: The Parallels in Early Years of the SSPX with Today’s Traditional Movement
In this episode, we’ll be looking at the history of the Society of Saint Pius X up to the point when Archbishop Lefebvre consecrated the bishops in 1988. But it doesn’t seem like history – in fact, some of the events that shaped the SSPX in its early years seem like they are repeated in...

Crisis Series #40: The Dream of Dakar – What’s the Mission of the SSPX?
Over the last 39 episodes we’ve seen the history of the Crisis, and in the last set of episodes the errors facing Catholics as a result. Now we’re going to get into the response to the Crisis – the traditional Catholic movement. And we certainly can’t talk about this movement without talking about the Society of Saint Pius X. But before we start talking about the history, which we’ll do in Episode 41, we have to look at the mission. What are the guiding principles behind the SSPX? And what led Archbishop Lefebvre to make certain decisions that he did about the organizational structure? He could have done a hundred different things. Why this?

Crisis Series #39: Are Novus Ordo Priests & Bishops Validly Ordained?
both ceremonies – does that make this sacrament invalid? Are we in the midst of a crisis where all the priests and bishops who were ordained using this rite are not actually priests and bishops? To understand this, we’ll need to look at the form and matter of sacraments and answer a fundamental question – can the Church change the form of sacraments at all? And if the Church is allowed to make these changes, what needs to remain in order for a sacrament to be valid?

Crisis Series #38: Is Pope Benedict Still the Legitimate Pope?
First, can a pope abdicate? Second, if he can, did Pope Benedict abdicate properly? What’s required for this to happen? Did Pope Benedict leave us a hidden meaning, or a coded message meant for the faithful to find during this process? And third, if this was all done properly, what do we make of the 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis?

Crisis Series #37: How Can an Indefectible Church Give us Deficient Worship?
We’ll finish our discussion from last week, all leading to the main question – how can the Church, which is indefectible, give us a rite of worship which is defective? Last week we looked at how the Church could, in fact promulgate errors through an ecumenical, non-dogmatic Council. Then we saw how the Church is not always infallible in its disciplinary laws – so today we’ll continue on that same track – looking at Liturgy. Have there been errors in Catholic Liturgy in the past? Were they corrected? What can history, and logic, tell us about the infallibility of the Church in its Liturgy? And can we be 100% certain about any of this, or does prudence have a role to play?

Crisis Series #36: How Can an Infallible Church Teach Error?
Today we’re joined by Fr. MacGillivray to ask one question: How is it that the Church, which is supposed to be indefectible, can give us a rite of worship, the Novus Ordo Mass, which is, at the least, problematic, if not defective? We won’t be able to answer this specifically today, since this question opens up many other questions we need to answer first, namely, how can the Church, through an ecumenical council, promulgate errors? Then we’ll begin to look at whether or not the Church can be infallible in its discipline – which is where the Liturgy falls.

Crisis Series #35 w/ Fr. Loop: Must All Catholics Accept Vatican II? Is it Infallible?
In the past years – especially very recently, it has become a mandate for all Catholics to unequivocally accept all the teachings of Vatican II – as a sort of litmus test as to whether or not you’re a good Catholic. The SSPX does not accept all the teachings of Vatican II. Fr. Loop will join us to explain why – but first we’ll start with the infallibility of the Council

Crisis Series #34 w/ Don Tranquillo: Is Sedevacantism the Answer to the Crisis?
This flows directly from the last episode on obedience, and its limits – but takes it to next step entirely. There are several different categories or theories within the sedevacantist structure. We’ll discuss a couple of the most widespread ideas, but broadly, they all share a single disturbing commonality – that those who hold these ideas will necessarily open the door to the wholesale destruction of the hierarchal Catholic Church.

Crisis Series #33 w/ Fr. Wiseman: Limits of Obedience in the Face of Suppression
This episode is the linchpin of the Crisis Series - pulling in all the concepts we've already learned, and setting the stage for the rest of the episodes. In short, are there limits to obeying a higher authority? Are traditional Catholics just being disobedient and spiteful? What can we learn from this episode about Traditiones Custodes?

Crisis Series #32 w/ Fr. Robinson: Can Non-Catholics Go to Heaven? The Church vs. Fr. Feeney
We’ll finish where we left off last episode, when we discussed the errors of Father Leonard Feeney, and today we’ll look at the doctrine of “No Salvation Outside the Church.” What does this mean? In order to attain heaven, is it a strict necessity to be baptized with water, and be a practicing Catholic? Are there three baptisms, or just one? What does the Ordinary Magisterium of the Church say on these matters? What about St. Thomas Aquinas, and what about Archbishop Lefebvre – if anyone in the twentieth century was fighting against the impulses of ecumenism that was sweeping the Church, and this doctrine, it would be him – so did he agree with Fr. Feeney?

Crisis Series #31 w/ Fr. Robinson: The Feeneyite Error – Overreacting to Modernism
Today we’ll start the first of two episodes with Fr. Paul Robinson about the doctrine “Outside the Church there is No Salvation.” And today, we’ll be speaking about Fr. Leonard Feeney, and the organizations that he was a part of: the Saint Benedict Center, and the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart. Why discuss this doctrine, and this movement, commonly known as "Feeneyism" during this point in the Crisis in the Church Series? Because this movement, which started before the 2nd Vatican Council, contains stark warnings about the current traditional movement in the 21st century.

Crisis Series #30 w/ Fr. Reuter: Hermeneutic of Continuity – Big Word, Big Logical Leap [updated]
Today’s episode takes us into the disconnect between two periods of the Catholic Church: the time before 1965, and the Post-Conciliar - or after Vatican II - Catholic Church. Everyone in the Catholic Church, from Archbishop Lefebvre to Pope Francis, agrees that something changed between these two periods. But there are vast differences between the two in how to explain the transition. Father Steven Reuter will join us to explain a theory that gained a lot of traction under Pope Benedict – the Hermeneutic of Continuity. In short, the central question is, “can both periods of the Catholic Church live in agreement?”

Crisis Series #29 w/ Don Tranquillo: Collegiality – More Dangerous Than You Knew
We’re pleased to welcome Don Mauro Tranquillo to discuss one of the least well known, but arguably, most vital of the errors to come from the Second Vatican Council, Collegiality. Collegiality, as Father will discuss, is not just about democratizing the Church, but would completely upend the doctrine of the Church regarding Bishops, and by it, do great danger to both the Episcopacy and the Papacy.

Should You Attend a Vocations Retreat? w/ Fr. John McFarland
In this interview, originally published last Summer, we speak with Fr. John McFarland, who is the Vocations Director for the US District of the Society of Saint Pius X. He discusses the types of vocations, who should think about entering the seminary, what kind of person it takes and much more!

Crisis Series #28 w/ Fr. Loop: Is Religious Liberty Worse Than Abortion?
Today we’re speaking with Fr. Jonathan Loop about Religious Liberty. This, like Ecumenism, is one of the major exports of the Second Vatican Council. By it, we’re led to believe that someone’s religion is their conscience, and no one else should tell them how to believe. But Father Loop will explain to us how, while this sounds very nice, is completely missing the mark on what Liberty is – and how the Church has changed from its previous practice, of Religious Toleration.

Crisis Series #27 w/ Fr. Summers: Why Ecumenism Makes Catholicism Schizophrenic
This week, we’re speaking with Fr. Patrick Summers, the District Superior of the Society of Saint Pius X in Asia about Ecumenism. Ecumenism, as we have seen in Episode 23, was one of the driving factors behind the Novus Ordo Mass – but today we’ll explore the other effects of Ecumenism on the Catholic Church, and how, instead of being the new way to evangelize, as was blindly promised, threatens to turn Catholicism into a schizophrenic religion.

Crisis Series #26: “Really, Father?” Fr. Franks Answers Questions & Objections
A slightly different episode for you this week, as we’re not tackling a new topic, but getting some questions answered that some of our listeners and viewers asked about the recent set of episodes on the Novus Ordo Mass. Father Franks joined us to go a little deeper on questions of validity of the New Mass, why this rite is different than other rites the Church has had in the past, and bluntly, how does the Society of Saint Pius X have any authority in these matters?

Questions with Fr. #28: Can I Go to Any Latin Mass I Want?
Companion Article: https://sspx.org/en/news-events/news/father-should-i-attend-mass-advice-attending-non-sspx-latin-masses-66314View on YouTube: https://youtu.be/lgCv5Rohu24 In the past months, we’ve been producing a series of episodes on the Crisis in the Church, and haven’t released any new episodes of our series that really started the SSPX Podcast – Questions with Father. If you’re unfamiliar with this series, how it works is, listeners send in questions, and we ask Father 2 or three of these questions to make up one episode. In the past we’ve talked about things like When should I make a general confession? Or, is Yoga ok? Or even topics that are a bit light hearted, like, can I enjoy a kosher pastrami sandwich, or buy food that is certified Halal – like a delicious kabob?Well, in this episode, we’re tackling 1 question that is very often posed to our priests, so we decided to make a full episode on this one question – simply, it’s “Father, can I go this Mass or that Mass?” Or put another way, "Are all Latin Masses the same?"Father Robinson and I recorded this episode in December, and we are releasing it now in the middle of our series on the Crisis in the Church, where we’re looking at the Novus Ordo Mass. We figured it’ll fit perfectly into this series, so it will drop into your podcast feed right after the episode where we’ve looked at a similar question – whether or not you should attend the Novus Ordo Mass. So there is a bit of overlap, since we recorded this earlier – Father does reiterate some of the same points about the danger of the Novus Ordo, but it’s worth reviewing, and it all serves to get to the answer that one of our listeners asked.Again if you’re not familiar with the Questions with Father series, I’d suggest going to http://SSPXPodcast.com/questions or just scroll back in your podcast feedSubscribe to the SSPX YouTube channel here:https://www.youtube.com/c/SSPXNewsEnglish?sub_confirmation=1Stay Connected on Social Media:Twitter: https://twitter.com/SSPXENFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SSPXEN/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sspx_en/SSPX News Website:https://fsspx.news/enVisit our website: https://sspx.org/en

Crisis Series #25 w/ Fr. Robinson: Should Catholics Attend Novus Ordo Mass?
On this episode, we’re talking with Fr. Paul Robinson, the Prior of Saint Isidores in Denver, Colorado, about the practical matters that Catholics should know about the Novus Ordo Mass. Over the last two episodes, we’ve looked at the inherent problems in this new formulation of the New Mass. Today, we’ll see what that means for us as Catholics. Do these problems mean that the New Mass is invalid? Or should we even be attending the New Mass, if we have the choice?

Crisis Series #24 w/ Fr. Franks: The New Mass: Proclaiming a New Theology
We’ll continue our discussion of the Novus Ordo Mass today with Fr. Paul-Isaac Franks, professor of Theology at Saint Marys College. Last time, we looked at the New Mass’s Ecumenical intent. Today, we’ll see how the New Mass is a direct expression of the New Theology that was condemned by Pope Pius XII. But this problematic theology came back in full force during the second Vatican council, and when the New Mass was developed, it drew on this new theology, putting aside much of the traditional theology contained in the Church’s Magisterium.

Crisis Series #23 w/ Fr. Reuter: How the New Mass Was Made for Protestants
We’re starting our 4-episode look at the Novus Ordo Mass, which was introduced in 1969. We’ll be covering a different aspect during each of these episodes, today, looking at the New Mass, and how it was developed as an Ecumenical Rite. We know from previous episodes that the Church had pivoted in its relationship to other religions. But the New Mass is a striking example of this Ecumenist spirit – and Fr. Reuter will explain to us how nearly every change that was made was done to appease Non-Catholics.

Crisis Series #22 w/ Fr. McFarland: Everything Must Change! Post-Conciliar “Reforms”
With this episode, we’re starting our study of the period after the Second Vatican Council. Over the next twenty or so episodes, we’ll be diving into topics like the Novus Ordo Mass, Religious Liberty, Collegiality, the Hermeneutic of Continuity, Feenyism, Obedience and its Limits, Sedevacantism, Ecumenism, Infallibility, the new Canonizations, Supplied Jurisdiction, and much more. But today, we’ll start with the reforms that started to take place just after the Second Vatican Council. Father John-Mark McFarland will take us through the immediate aftermath of the council, and show us how the Council, and the “Spirit of Vatican II” meant an immediate overhaul, and deformation of everything in the Church.
