Your Shortcut to... The tobacco wars
There’s been a lot of news around about smoking lately - and not just about it being hazardous for our health. The rising cost of cigarettes in Australia has led to a thriving black market and an explosion of crime in what’s become known as the tobacco wars. In this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll take a look at what’s happening with the tobacco industry in Australia, how vaping’s become a big part of the problem, and what’s being done to bring things under control… Squiz recommends: Listening: An episode of the Life & Crimes with Andrew Rule podcast called The Tobacco Wars. Andrew brings years of crime reporting experience to this story and he tells it in his engaging signature style. Reading: An article published by the ABC called Fake Cigarettes, Firebombs and a Flourishing Black Market which gives a detailed look into the numbers and the cost of illegal tobacco to the government and businesses. Your Shortcut to... The European Parliament
The European parliamentary elections happened recently and far-right parties made big gains, pushing out candidates from the centre and left of politics. As a result, decisions around key issues like climate change, migration and security in the European Union could be affected. In France, the hardline anti-immigration National Rally party won nearly a third of votes - prompting French President Emmanuel Macron to call a snap election. It’s a gamble that could have far-reaching consequences, and the world will be closely watching the outcome. In this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll look at how the European Parliament works, delve into the results from the recent elections, and examine the changes in Europe they could bring about. Squiz recommends: Reading: This article published in The Conversation gives a good overview of the European Parliamentary election and what the results could mean. Listening: This episode of The Guardian’s Full Story podcast called: How a far-right push in Europe triggered a shock election in France gives a great summary of the upcoming French election and why Emmanuel Macron has “bet the farm” in such a dramatic way. Your Shortcut to... The International Criminal Court
The International Criminal Court (ICC) made headlines recently when its chief prosecutor applied for arrest warrants for the leaders of Israel and Hamas - accusing them of war crimes in Gaza. It’s a controversial move that has divided world leaders… It's also prompted a few Squizers to request an explainer on how the ICC works. So, in this Shortcut, we’ll look at the court’s role in the world, how it operates, and why its case against Israeli and Hamas leaders has sparked a heated global debate. Squiz recommends: Listening: The ABC’s Global Roaming podcast - Who’s Afraid of the ICC? Your Shortcut to... Rafael Nadal's legendary career
In this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll take a look at the “King of Clay” Rafael Nadal who was back in action at the French Open earlier this week. “Rafa”, as he’s affectionately known, has an extraordinary record at Roland Garros, having won the men’s singles trophy 14 times - prompting some to say it should be named after him. But his dream of taking home a 15th title wasn’t to be and he bowed out in the first round. At nearly 38 years old, Nadal has been battling to stay at the top of the game after 2 years of injuries, and although nothing’s been confirmed, he’s hinted this tour could be his last. So in this Squiz Shortcut we’ll get you across Rafa’s rise to the top, why he’s loved around the world, and the legacy he’ll leave behind when he finally decides to hang up his racquet. Squiz recommends: Reading: Rafa’s biography for the hardcore fans who want to know more about him… it’s called Rafa: My Story* More reading: this GQ story sees Nadal and Federer posing together for a recent Louis Vuitton campaign at the top of a snowy mountain and saying nice things about each other. Your Shortcut to... The 3G Shutdown
In this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll look at why Australia is shutting down its 3G phone network in the coming months. That’s something that’s set to be a problem for the estimated half a million people who are still using phones and other devices that rely on 3G, particularly in regional areas. It’s an issue that’s been put on hold, but as we get closer to the deadline the phone is ringing. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we talk about why 3G is being retired, how that’s going to happen, and how it will affect Aussie phone customers. Squiz recommends: Reading: The 3G closure fact sheet on the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association’s website. It has all the information people need about why the 3G shutdown is happening and instructions about how to check if their phones/devices will be affected. Recycling: If you do take the opportunity to get a new phone, the government is directing people to recycle their old 3G ones through MobileMuster, the Australian mobile industry’s official recycling scheme, which has drop-off points in every suburb and also in regional areas. Help: Check whether your phone will be affected by the 3G shutdown using a handy text service launched by both Telstra and Optus - just text "3" to the number 3498. This will send a reply back straight away telling you whether your phone is compatible with 4G and whether you need to take any action. Want the email version? Your Shortcut to... University Campus Protests
In this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll look at why college students are protesting about the Gaza war at campuses across the United States. They’ve made headlines over the past month because some of the demonstrations have turned violent, sparking debates over free speech and even forcing the White House to weigh in. They’ve also spread to Aussie universities, where students have set up camps, and tensions are running high. So we'll look at what they’re trying to achieve and their likely impact - if any. Squiz recommends: Reading: This explainer from The Guardian discusses what’s been happening at university campuses in Australia. Listening: This episode of The Daily podcast from The New York Times gives a good account of the US protests, particularly on the night of the UCLA arrests, and what impact the activism could have on Joe Biden’s bid to retain the Presidency.
