Your Shortcut to... Tim Walz

You wouldn't be alone if you hadn’t heard of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz before Kamala Harris picked him as her running mate for the upcoming US Presidential election - most Americans didn’t know him either. The Democratic duo has got a lot of ground to cover and not a lot of time - so in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll get you across who Walz is, what he brings to Harris’ campaign, and the challenges they’re facing in the countdown to November. Squiz recommends: Watching: This viral clip of Tim Walz from an interview on MSNBC gives a good snapshot of what he stands for and his style of speaking. Reading: An article from the Sydney Morning Herald titled “Harris leads Trump in three key states after a year of Biden’s polls struggle” gives a great summary of the gains the Democrats have made in the polls and why the swing states are vital to winning the election. Your Shortcut to... JD Vance

If you’ve been paying attention to US politics over the last couple of years you might have clocked the rise of JD Vance in the Republican Party - but you can be forgiven if the first you’d heard of him was when former President Donald Trump announced him as his running mate for November’s election. So in this Shortcut, we’ll get you across who he is, his brand of politics, and what the experts say about what he would bring to office. Squiz recommends: Reading/watching: Read Vance’s memoir Hillbilly Elegy or watch the film version on Netflix. If you’re interested in this election, it’s a good thing to have up your sleeve. Reading: This short explainer on Project 2025 from Axios. Project 2025 is a blue-print laid down by a right-wing organisation called the Heritage Foundation that keeps popping up in the coverage on US politics. Vance hasn’t endorsed it, but he has written a forward for a book by its architect Kevin Roberts. Want the email version? Sign up for the Shortcuts newsletter here.

Your Shortcut to... The CFMEU allegations

The Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (known as the CFMEU) has been at the centre of some pretty damning allegations over the past couple of weeks including corruption, links to organised crime, and standover tactics. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll explain who the union is, the reasons it has come under scrutiny, and why this scandal is such a big issue for the Labor party. Squiz recommends: Listening: An episode of the ABC’s Insiders podcast called On Background: The CFMEU’s corruption crisis, and it features an interview with investigative journalist Nick McKenzie who was one of the team from the SMH who broke the story. Reading: An article from the Australian Financial Review called Political Poison: Unions, the Labor Party and the CFMEU. It is behind a paywall but it really helps with understanding the impact of the union on the cost of housing and major infrastructure projects. Want the email version? Your Shortcut to... The Paris Olympics

The Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympics is just days away - and it’s fair to say the City of Light has had its share of challenges just making it to the starting line. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll look at some of the trickiest issues organisers have faced, how they’ve dealt with them, and what thousands of athletes and fans descending on the city can expect in the next fortnight Squiz recommends: Reading: An article published in the Sydney Morning Herald called, Stinky Seine: Where fish go to die and Olympics poo protests are born. Apart from being quite a funny read, it also gives a good account of the history, the science, and the reaction from athletes and politicians. Reading: A short read by the BBC called How is France preparing for the Olympics and Paralympics? which gives a great overview of all the things the organisers have done in preparation for both Games. Your Shortcut to... Queen Camilla

In happy news for royal watchers, it’s been confirmed this week that King Charles and Queen Camilla are coming to Australia in October. We already know a lot about the King, but in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll take a look at Queen Camilla’s life, how she won over the British public, and why her role in the monarchy is now more important than ever. Squiz recommends: Reading: The Town and Country article called The Vindication of Queen Camilla is a longer read but it gives a good overview of Charles’ and Camilla’s story. Listening: An episode of Profile from BBC Sounds called Camilla, Queen Consort. It was published just ahead of King Charles’ Coronation and features interviews with Camilla’s friends and royal reporters speaking about her upcoming role as Queen and what she brings to the royal family. Your Shortcut to... The new UK government

The UK has entered a new era, voting in Labour leader Keir Starmer as Prime Minister and ending 14 years of Conservative rule. It was a landslide win that sent a clear message from the British people that they want change. But to fix things, Starmer has a huge task ahead. In this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll introduce the new PM, look at some of the challenges he’s facing, and talk about what the change of government could mean for us and the rest of the world. Squiz recommends: Reading: An article from The Conversation called Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has a thumping election win – what does it mean for the UK and the rest of the world? It gives a good account of the challenges Starmer is facing and what the change of government will mean for the world. Listening: This episode of the podcast Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware featuring Keir Starmer is a bit of a long one, but it gives you the chance to get to know the new PM in a casual setting, as he talks about his childhood, family life, motivations for going into politics - and his favourite dishes. If you're more enthusiastic about the Wimbledon fashions than forehands, check out World #2 Coco Gauff's custom-made cut-out dress that some suspect is an homage to Serena Williams and 4-time Grand Slam champ Naomi Osaka’s ruffle ensemble that “wouldn’t have looked out of place at the Met Gala”. It’s a far cry from the stuffy image of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament, but a historical review proves that Wimbledon style has never been boring. If you do need some colour in your life though, the courtside celebrity fashionistas are bringing it - including our very own Rebel Wilson. Friday Lites: If you reckon you’re a bit of a gourmand, it’s time to lean in and prove it with this epic white chicken chilli recipe. Your Shortcut to... Future Made in Australia and critical minerals

There’s been a lot of talk about the Albanese Government’s Future Made in Australia policy since it was unveiled in the Budget. Put simply, it’s the government’s roadmap to turn us into a “renewables superpower” - but not everyone’s convinced. So as we head towards an election dominated by the energy debate, in this Squiz Shortcut, we look at what the Future Made in Australia policy is, how it’ll work, and why everyone’s talking about critical minerals. Squiz recommends: Listening: An ABC News Daily podcast called Can Australia Really Afford to Make Stuff? which gives a good insight into some of the challenges the government might face with its Future Made in Australia plan. It’s a 15 minute listen, you know we love a short form podcast, but it lays out what the government is planning, and looks at whether they can pull it off. Reading: An article published in The Conversation called: “Critical minerals for the world – or just for the US? Turning Australia into a green minerals powerhouse comes with risks” which gives a good summary of Australia’s predicament when it comes to critical minerals. Want the email version?
