Shunyamurti reads from Padamalai, commenting on the wealth of grace vs the earthly riches that the ego seeks, the problems with the capitalist system, the collapse of the market economy, the symbolism of the word "depression" for both the psyche and economy, the correlation of the loss of spiritual wealth and material wealth, and the creation of true wealth through love.

Welcome to the be-dead-while-alive-stream, brought to you from the misty mountains of Costa Rica, from the Sat Yoga Ashram. Welcome to all of those who are attending the satsang online. We’re in the midst of our annual rainy season retreat here at the ashram, and we’ve been in relative silence for the last couple of weeks and with intense classes and meditations. So I’m sure that those who are here in this local space as well as those listening online will have interesting questions—no doubt profound questions about your own journey to Self-Realization. But actually, the whole process and the whole understanding is extremely simple, and really does not need to give rise to any questions—it should actually put all questions to an end. I think the ancient metaphor that’s most useful is simply that of the drop of rainwater that returns to the ocean. Perhaps a little more accurate would be a bubble of foam on a wave on the ocean, and when that ego bubble pops, there is only the ocean. And there was never anything but the ocean. And so if we understand consciousness to be an infinite ocean—an infinite field that is beyond time and space, in which the universe appears, but that appearance is nothing more than the foam on a wave within that ocean—then we understand that we have never left the original true Consciousness, that has no boundaries, no separate units. And all we need to do is let the bubble pop and we will realize that.

Question: The idea of a spiritual revolution is one that’s gaining traction, and the next retreat here in December is about that, it’s called “Advanced Training for Spiritual Revolutionaries”. So, my question is: what really is a spiritual revolutionary, and how will a spiritual revolution differ from the old revolutions that have come and gone and failed, whether political or pseudo-spiritual?

Shunyamurti explains the teachings that cannot be taught as well as how the world is unreal.

Shunyamurti reads again from the Padamalai, specifically focusing on Ramana's view on hatha yoga and its shortcomings, proposing instead atma vichara rather than trying to make effort to control the mind, which is always an effort of the mind itself.

Shunyamurti explains that yoga was developed as an attempt to return to the primordial state (since the beginning of Dwapar Yuga), but that it has devolved into a set of exercises, and discusses Ashtanga Yoga, which was not the original yoga and was based on the Sankhya philosophy, explaining the eight limbs (the Yamas/Niyamas, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi, Samyama) and going over them in detail, and explaining how they represent different phases of the spiritual path.

Shunyamurti reveals that the difficulty of meditation is that you think you know who you are, but that the key discovery of the ancient sages was that consciousness is impersonal and only learns to act like a person, identifying with the body, with demands of the parents, with patterns that become rigid, with a superego that makes it feel guilty and that it lives in a moral universe, and that if one wants one's "criminal record" wiped clean, then one more dissolve into the impersonal Absolute, which will manifest as love without desire.

Shunyamurti reveals that the Nataraj is a fairly recent statue that comes from the Chola dynasty, that before the only representation of Shiva that was allowed was the Shiva Lingam, and that Shiva is the Zero Point that is the fire/flame/agni, and elucidates more of the symbolism of the Nataraj, going through each aspect in detail

Shunyamurti reveals that the function of the Sat Yogi is to unify heaven and hell through the superior coherence of heavenly consciousness and the willingness to travel alone through the valley of the shadow of death, and that through this journey the gift of the wish-fulfilling jewel is given, which is what can bring about transformation to the entire holographic field.

Shunyamurti analyzes the meaning of Buddha's awakening, the importance of freeing one's intelligence from sentimentality, and the seven obstacles to magic, among many other topics in this teaching from our September 2019 retreat, "The Basis of White Magic".

Question: What is white magic?

Shunyamurti explains that one can speak Truth directly or vis-a-vis the illusion, but the latter ratifies the illusion, which is false, and that one must simply let go of ignorance, but this creates a catch-22 (letting go of illusion in order to think clearly so that one can let go of illusion), and one takes the illusion too seriously to want to let go of it, and he then speaks about the states of dreaming and deep sleep, specifically why one creates a dream and the function of the dream, how one creates a world that resists one's control so that one can believe that it is real and not have to face that it is an illusion, but that liberation requires a radical letting go of a belief in the world so that one can reach Sat Chit Ananda.

In this teachings, Shunyamurti speaks about upgrading your system to Cosmic Consciousness and the new world to be created.

Shunyamurti discusses the descent of consciousness, weaving in the understanding of Aham Aham, the transitive/intransitive linguistic use of the term "I", how this relates to the registers of consciousness, and ties everything with a discussion of karma.

Shunyamurti says that in the early phases of the spiritual journey, the path is divided in four types (action, devotion, meditative, and gyani) and explains each of them, then revealing that, as one goes further, the paths break into two (the "do it yourself" and the bhakti/surrender), describing each of these paths, but stating that both of these require love (not simply karma, willpower, etc.) and any belief one has about oneself.

Shunyamurti leads us on a guided meditation, focusing on Ramana Maharshi's practice of Atma Vichara, or Self-Enquiry, the question "Who Am I?"

Shunyamurti uses the metaphor of a revolutionary to explain the ideas of Deleuze, Nishida, and Ramana in order to explain how to incite a real revolution that will take one to liberation.

Shunyamurti explains the significance of Ramana Maharshi and how his very life's trajectory has given us insight into the turn that the modern West has taken in the overthrow of materialism, as well as how this relates to Nietzsche's "Will to Power", the implications this has for our relationship to non-human entities, and what this means for the future.

Shunyamurti speaks about international yoga day, that yoga is inter-dharmic, that it comes from a former world age and predates all of the current religions, but that religion originally had the same purpose as yoga (to "re-unite"), giving the example of the trees of knowledge (duality) and life (nonduality) in the Garden of Eden, also speaking about how these reflect the buddhi and the manas, the story of the Bhagavad Gita and how we, like Arjuna, face the problem of divided loyalties in our journey to liberation, and how by surrendering to the Source and passing through ego death, the entire world dream can be transformed.

Shunyamurti says that there is a mistake in understanding the profundity of the teachings of Ramana, that they go far deeper than most people understand, and goes on to discuss predecessors to Ramana in the West (notably, Spinoza) and how Ramana's teachings elucidate, clarify, and summarize many of the insights of the West that came before him.

Shunyamurti clarifies that the realization of the Self happens outside of time, beyond the world, but the ego-mind is caught in practicality, not to mention dealing with inner drives, desires, fears (of loneliness), but the issues that plague the ego are often never acknowledged because of the ego's focus on the practical and superficial, and he then contrasts this with the case of Ramana and gives a detailed account of Ramana's history leading up to and following his realization of the Self, ending with the point that realization will happen the moment we choose it.

Shunyamurti asks why Ramana says that the only way to Liberation is through atma vichara, discussing that, if one looks deeply, there is no thinker to the thoughts, that the ego is a program that lacks essence, and discusses the programming and development of the ego, and that when the ego ends, karma ends.

Question: How does one move from knowledge accumulation to spiritual realization?

Shunyamurti starts by explaining the difference between contemplation and quantumplation, explaining how science has superseded religion, and how we must use the insights of science to elucidate our spiritual knowledge, and he speaks of the balance between theory and practice, finally speaking about the meaning of the Trivium.

Question: How does one honor the goddess? Excerpt: "The goddess is known as Shakti. Shiva and Shakti are the two twin principles of Cosmic Reality. Shiva transcends the cosmos and the power of Shakti creates and evolves the cosmos and is present as the intelligence of nature, the beauty of nature, the pristine infinite preciousness of the natural world and all of its potencies and all of the intricate intelligences that work together in every ecosystem. And to honor the Goddess is to honor and sustain and be a steward of that system of nature which she has provided and which she pervades."

Shunyamurti reveals that, today, the bodily religions are celebrating Easter and Passover, which shows their frame of reference of body-consciousness, and explains their symbolic spiritual significance which pertains to all of us, as well as the symbolism of Moses and Christ.

In this guided meditation, Shunyamurti invites us to bring the attention to the center and merge into the source of being that is filled with love, power, wisdom and joy. (25mins.)

Shunyamurti defines meditation as "questioning the relationship to thought, body, and the world", and goes on to explain the paradoxes of thought itself, of trying to move beyond thought with thought, and of the structure and development of the ego.
