We Stand For Workers Liberty — Pamphlet audio

Workers’ Liberty is a socialist organisation. Our members are active in workplaces, Uni campuses, trade unions, the Labour Party, and left politics. We think it is possible to replace capitalism with a better society — socialism. We think that the people who can do this are the working class. This pamphlet sets out what we think, what we do, and what makes us different from other political groups and NGOs. It tells you what is involved with being a member. WF 32 Autumn/Winter '24 — Labour in Power: What next? | Culture | Abortion | Trans rights | World

Women's Fightback 32, Autumn-Winter 2024. Inside: Labour in Power: What Next? — Editorial Pride in Labour? — An interview with Max O'Hara & Sacha Marten Labour Won't Save the NHS — Elaine Jones Justice for Justine & Jay — Jesse Michaels Slip — An Interview with Amelia Loulli Abortion is Healthcare: demo report — Sabrina Rahma Duale Free Speech and Abortion — An Interview with Greta Kaur-Taylor A Sigh of Relief – But for How Long? — Betty Allen Dispatches from the French Left — Marine Azua The Strike Against Apartheid — Lizzy Brooks Poetry: The Silent War — Sarah Pritchard Review: Uncertain Futures — Dominika Szarek Review: Judy Chicago — Jill Mountford Imane Khelif: Sport & Transphobia — Natalia Cassidy The bastards are out. After 14 years of Tory rule, this edition of Women's Fightback is brought to you under a Labour government. It is crucial that feminists and socialists think clearly about this new political reality, and that a real debate opens up about what our strategy should be. Our lead piece surveys the situation and sets out a rudimentary programme, and we continue the theme with a deep- dive into Labour's NHS policy. We also carry coverage of Labour's slide on LGBT rights, and some shocking union-busting by a Labour Council. As always, we also bring you a mix of history, culture and internationalism. We have first-hand reports from the US election and the French left, as well as the history of an anti-apartheid strike. We review a poetry anthology and some feminist art exhibitions. And we re-tell the story of a bizarre transphobic witch-hunt against a cisgender gold-medallist at the summer Olympics. We hope you enjoy it. More online: https://workersliberty.org/wf

Why trade unions should not support the Morning Star — Pamphlet

This short pamphlet explains why trade unions should not be giving political and financial support to a newspaper which is not the "daily paper of the left" but the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of Britain (CPB). More online and buy: https://workersliberty.org/morningstar The Morning Star is not an effective way for unions to gain support for their disputes and campaign. And the political cost of backing the Morning Sar is immense: in effect, presenting a vision of “socialism” in which the totalitarian police state of China is held up as desirable, military coups (as in Niger) are hailed as legitimate means of achieving progressive change, and nationalist illusions of “socialism in one country” are promoted as the way forward for Britain. And it’s not even true that the paper allows genuine debate on issues where there are differences on the left.

Effective Trade Unionism: Writings by James Connolly | Audiobook

Aiming to replace capitalism with socialism, James Connolly’s organising and ideas evolved considerably. One idea he clung to from the turn of the century to his death in 1916 was industrial unionism, workers’ solidarity across grades and trades and sympathetic strikes. That is how he saw his work with Larkin on the Irish Transport Union: a union for an industry and the members watching the moment until they could take over running the industry. His articles on that theme have never previously been collected compactly, and many appear in this short book — here in audioformat — for the first time in full since original publication. No To War: Solidarity w/Ukraine | Sotsialny Rukh, Ukraine | Ukraine Solidarity Campaign | AWL

No To War - Solidarity with Ukraine Intro and summation speeches from a meeting of the same name, Monday 1 March, 2022. Speakers: • Denys Pilash from the Socialist group Sotsialny Rukh in Ukraine. • Chris Ford from Ukraine Solidarity Campaign. • Dale Street from Workers Liberty. Putins invasion of Ukraine is to force Ukraine to be part of Russia sphere of influence at the very least and may even be about snuffing out Ukraine as an independent nation full stop. This is a naked example of brutal imperialism. Socialists, the trade union movement and Democrats need to oppose this war and support the Ukrainian peoples right to self determination and self defence. We will also be discussing the practical way we can support the Ukrainian community here in Britain. https://workersliberty.org/ukraine This is the link for people to signup and keep in touch with Workers Liberty: http://www.workersliberty.org/signup Sotsialniy Rukh on fb https://www.facebook.com/social.ruh Taras Bilous' letter https://commons.com.ua/ru/letter-western-left-kyiv/ Денис Пілаш: Here is a list of different organizations and charities which work to help Ukrainians in their anti-imperial war against Russia: The Social Movement — The Social Movement is a left-wing public organization. Who was James Connolly? With Micheál MacEoin

James Connolly is most associated with the Easter Rising of 1916 when, amidst the imperialist slaughter of the First World War, Irish republicans and the revolutionary socialist Irish Citizen Army launched an armed uprising against the British Empire. The Rising triggered a series of events, culminating in the Irish War of Independence in 1919 and the Irish Civil War, and shaped the course of modern Irish history. Before 1916, Connolly had almost three decades of activity behind him, as a socialist propagandist and a trade union organiser, in Scotland, Ireland and the United States. So who was Connolly and what were his political ideas? How did he come to be involved in the Rising, and what can socialists learn from his life, writings and political activity? Micheál MacEoin, author of a forthcoming book on Connolly, discussed these questions and more at a Workers' Liberty public meeting: this is the audio recording of the intro speech.

From climate coalition to climate movement: how to stop climate chaos! With Zack Muddle

COP26 has failed us. Humanity remains on a path towards catastrophic climate change. World leaders, serving only narrow nationalist and capitalistic interests won't challenge the power of the system accelerating climate change – so we have to. The coalition of forces taking this on is diverse but in large parts disconnected. From civil society groups like Insulate Britain, student activist networks such as the UK Student climate network, and workplace organisations popping up in various sectors. How do we cohere these groups and others to build a movement capable of stopping climate chaos?

Degrowth? What should socialists advocate? With Luke Neal and Zack Muddle

Should socialists advocate "degrowth"? Our socialist environmental reading group looked at the "degrowth" debate from a Marxist perspective. The two core articles - free to download - were Kallis, Socialism Without Growth (2017) and Schwartzman and Engel Di-Mauro, A Response to Giorgios Kallis’ Notions of Socialism and Growth (2019). https://sci-hub.mksa.top/10.1080/10455752.2017.1386695 and https://sci-hub.mksa.top/10.1080/10455752.2019.1638612 More readings at https://workersliberty.org/readings-degrowth

Corbynism: What Went Wrong? 5 of 5

Corbynism: What Went Wrong? Part 5 of 5, chapters 20-23, pages 45-60. In summer 2015 things suddenly “went right” for the left in an unexpected way, with Jeremy Corbyn’s election as Labour leader. By December 2019, they had evidently “gone wrong” again. That can’t be explained just by ill-will from the media and the Labour right: those were always there. This booklet offers an attempt to analyse the setbacks, learn lessons, and sketch a way to renewed efforts. More online, or buy paper copies: https://workersliberty.org/corbynism Chapters: 20. Debate over HS2 | Ecological further reading — pt. 22 and pt. 23, WCA 4th ed.

"More rail yes, HS2 maybe not": Simon Nelson wrote that article for Solidarity 535, February 2020. After that is a response by Mark Catterall’, then a reply to that by Simon Nelson. Then there is the Further Reading box. More, a paper version of the booklet For Workers' Climate Action (4th edition), and a contents list, at workersliberty.org/climate-pamphlet *Further reading* We have a weekly environmental column in Solidarity, and hundreds of climate articles on our website. There are countless books we might recommend, beyond those reviewed and mentioned so far. But there are a few notable areas which we wanted to cover in this pamphlet, but couldn’t because of space. What is the ruling class likely to do in response to climate change, in the coming decades? We read and discussed a book, Climate Leviathan, that we were heavily critical of, but which is nonetheless thought provoking. See two reviews: “Against Leviathan, a workers’ plan” bit.ly/against-leviathan and “Four climate futures” bit.ly/4-climate-f How may global warming play out? David Wallace-Wells’ The Uninhabitable Earth attempts to sketch answers. “Climate disaster is already with us” is a review of this book. There have been some critical replies, and a debate, following this. The interlocutors both agree the book is worth reading. See the articles: bit.ly/w-wells Fossil Capital: The Rise of Steam Power and the Roots of Global Warming by Andreas Malm attempts to chart the rise of steam power and its links to the development of capitalism. We are critical of much of his politics. See workersliberty.org/malm-debate for several differing reviews on Malm’s writings, a debate, plus a critical study guide. We read and discussed several different readings on “Degrowth” from a Marxist perspective. Readings and videos at workersliberty.org/readings-degrowth *Stay updated* The climate, and related science, politics, and activism are constantly changing. This pamphlet will start going out of date as soon as we publish it. We work to make that happen: to build a climate movement to move us onto a different track. Here are some ways to keep up to date: • Our website, workersliberty.org • Articles at workersliberty.org/climate-change • Subscribe to receive our weekly newspaper Solidarity, and support our work, for only £5 per month, at workersliberty.org/sub • Events, including our socialist environmental study group, at workersliberty.org/events • Contact us, and get more involved.
