S6 Ep 8B | Rev. Jonna Fantz on Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (Moses 8)

Rev. Jonna Fantz is a pastor, poet, and perpetual student. She is committed to helping facilitate transformation by encouraging a life-orienting relationship with Jesus Christ. Her most recent call was as the Worship and Community Life Pastor at Salem Covenant Church in New Brighton, MN. Jonna has also served as a spiritual director and Adult Discipleship Pastor in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota for over 20 years. Take a few minutes to meditate on Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and then listen in to hear where God led Jonna. Some highlights from our conversation: Jonna highlights the transition the Israelites were undergoing when Moses spoke these words. They were moving from a season of orientation to disorientation. We also discussed the seasons of disorientation Jonna has experienced and how the Lord used this passage to remind her of truth she needs to cling to in this season. Jonna gives insight into what “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” would have meant for the Israelites. It’s a little different than what it would mean for us. We talk about the two words the Lord drew Jonna to: hear and love. And how he was inviting her to hear and love differently in this season of her life. Jonna also brought new insight into the exhortation that the nation of Israel write things down. Spoiler: It cost a lot more for them to write things down than us. Finally, we talk about spiritual direction. We discuss what it is, why a spiritual director is helpful and how to find one. You can connect with Jonna directly via email at [email protected] If you are looking for a spiritual director, you can visit the Evangelical Covenant Church website here. You can also find a directory on the Grafted Life website here. (I personally know a few of the directors listed on this site. Both places are good and trusted places to go.) The exact verses read in this podcast are: Deuteronomy 6:4-9, NIV 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. y 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Deuteronomy 8:6-14 6 Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. 10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” 13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” 15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. S5 Ep 7B | Richella Parham on John 21 (Peter 7)

Richella Parham is the author of Mythical Me: Finding Freedom from Constant Comparison. She also co-host’s the Friends in Formation podcast and serves as a member of the Ministry Team for Renovaré. Her heart is to help people dismantle their preconceived myths about identity and worth as a way to help them clear a path for surrendering to our compassionate God. Take a few minutes to meditate on John 21 and then tune into this interview to hear where God led Richella. Some highlights from our conversation: God’s encouragement to Richella that she can be presumptuous with him – when it comes to him always meeting her with grace and love. No matter what. What the Lord helped her notice about Peter’s “more than” confidence before he denied Jesus and how Jesus reframed this with his questions to Peter about loving him “more than.” That even though it must have been really important for Peter to know what would happen to John, Jesus said he didn’t need to know. What was most important was following God – not worrying about others. How Richella used to create a “mythical” woman in her head that was the best of everyone – and how God invited her to let go of and reframe this tendency to one that celebrates the attributes of others instead of envying them. (Friends, don’t miss this part of our conversation. It’s so helpful and good!) Then he said to him, “Follow me!” 20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. … 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? Take a few minutes to meditate on John 13:3-17 and then tune into this interview to hear where God led Scott. Some highlights from our conversation: Scott asks a great question we all need to consider – Is it easier to give or receive. He reflects on which one is harder for him. John 13:3-17, NIV Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” 10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. Some highlights from our conversation: How the Lord used this process of Scripture meditation to help Sharifa see where she was holding God at arm’s length. You can find Sharifa at https://sharifastevens.com/ And follow her on Instagram @sharifawrites And Facebook @sharifahaylestevens The exact verses read in this podcast are Luke 5:4-11 in the NIV. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. S5 Ep 1A | Lectio Divina in Luke 5 (Peter 1)

Lectio Divina is the divine or sacred reading of Scripture. Create some sacred space for God and spend a few quiet moments engaging with his Word. As you allow the Spirit to lead, you may be surprised by where he leads you. Once you’ve listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, then head over to the next episode and catch the interview with Sharifa Stevens to hear where the Lord led her. If you would like to go deeper into the life of Peter, this series coincides with my Bible study: Journey: A Study of Peter for Stumbling Toward Jesus’s Extravagant Grace. You can find Jodie at Jodieniznik.com Instagram @creatingspaceforgod Facebook @jodieniznik Download your free Lectio Divina Guided journal here. The exact verses read in this podcast are Luke 5:4-11 in the NIV. At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. 6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.
