Choosing to Courageously Trust God | Meditation on Psalm 27: 1-3, 13-14
A Scripture Meditation on Psalm 27 using Lectio Divina. Do not be afraid. Easier said than done. Fear is a common emotion when we feel scared, concerned, or even ashamed. In this Psalm, David was being pursued by his very real enemies who wanted to do very real hard to him. In the face of this uncertainty, David chose courageous trust when he declared that God was greater than his enemies and therefore, he would not be afraid. David placed his confidence in the Lord. May we do the same. Listen in to this guided meditation and allow the Holy Spirit to direct you to what he has for you. The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. 13 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Here's the entire text of the reading: Luke 2:1-20, Message About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David’s town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant. 6–7 While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel. An Event for Everyone 8–12 There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.” 13–14 At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him. 15–18 As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed. 19–20 Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they’d been told! Empowered to Love Like Jesus, Guided Advent Meditation 4 | John 15:12-17
This week’s podcast is a Guided Lectio Divina Scripture meditation for the fourth week of Advent focused on Love. Jesus is love – and through him, we can be more loving toward others. This guided meditation may be particularly timely for you. I know it is for me. We always hear that this is the most wonderful time of the year and while that may be true, it’s also a time of added stress. And stress impacts how we love others. If you’re feeling low on love, take a few deep breaths and listen to this meditation. Love is a fruit of the Spirit, and the Spirit is ready to empower us to love as Jesus is inviting us to. The full meditation passage is as follows: John 15:12-17, NIV My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other. Discovering the Joy of Jesus, Guided Advent Meditation 3 | John 17:7-11
This week’s podcast is a Guided Lectio Divina Scripture meditation for the third week of Advent focused on joy. Jesus is where we find true and lasting joy. In this passage, Jesus ties our joy to something a bit surprising … obedience. At first glance, this doesn’t feel joyful, does it? That’s because we have a skewed take on the word obedience. We believe obedience is being told to do something we don’t want to do, like cleaning our room or eating our broccoli. But I want to encourage us to look at obedience in relationship to Jesus a little differently. Jesus is 100 percent trustworthy, fully loving, and always good. And Jesus sees all and knows all. This means his call to obedience is always for our good. So, instead of broccoli – it’s like chocolate. The other thing to notice about obedience is it starts with relationship. Jesus invites us to abide, or remain, in him. Obedience flows out of our connection to God. As you meditate on Jesus’s words this week, I pray the Spirit will lead you toward a deeper relationship with him and the true joy we find in Christ. The full meditation passage is as follows: John 15:7-11, NIV If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. Finding the Peace of Christ, Guided Advent Meditation 2 | John 14:25-31
This week’s podcast is a Guided Lectio Divina Scripture meditation for the second week of Advent focused on the peace Jesus offers us. In John 14, Jesus said he was leaving the disciples with his peace – not just fleeting tranquility for a moment but enduring peace for a lifetime. And because of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence in our lives today, we also have access to this same peace of Christ. As we face the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s easy to let our peace slip away. Whether it’s unmet expectations, difficult loved ones, or simply the pressure of more to do in less time, stress can become the norm for our holiday season. Yet, Jesus longs for us to exchange our stress for his peace. As you meditate on Jesus’ words, I pray you find the peace of Christ for your day and week. The full meditation passage is as follows: John 14:25-31, NIV 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me. Finding Hope in Jesus, Guided Advent Meditation 1 | John 14:1-6
This week’s podcast is a Guided Lectio Divina Scripture meditation for the first week of Advent focused on hope. Jesus is our true and lasting hope. Without hope, we become disillusioned – troubled with fear and anxiety about the future. Yet, Jesus tells us, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” We find hope in trusting Jesus with our future. We find hope in believing that this life is not all there is. We find hope that someday, “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) Hope is an appropriate place to start Advent. We are a people who need hope. I pray you find hope as you meditate on Jesus’ words through this Christian meditation. The full meditation passage is as follows: John 14:1-6, NIV “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. Spirit Guided Self-Control | Guided Christian Meditation on Galatians 5:13-16
This week’s podcast is a Guided Lectio Divina Scripture meditation on the Fruit of the Spirit of Self-Control. *** You can find out more about The Entering a New Season Guided Retreat here Christ’s death and resurrection give us freedom. Freedom from earning favor with God. Freedom from trying to earn our salvation. Yet our freedom isn’t well used when choose sin instead of God’s better way. Self-control is the ability to say no to sin and yes to God. We know we can’t do this in our own strength, which is why self-control is a Fruit of the Spirit. We need to consistently walk with the Spirit so that we are able to lay aside the temptations to sin and choose God instead. As you meditate on our passage this week, allow the Spirit to guide you into what he has for you. The full meditation passage is as follows: Galatians 5:13-16, NIV 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” k 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. 16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. The Transformative Power of Gentleness | Guided Christian Meditation on Colossians 3:11-14
This week’s podcast is a Guided Lectio Divina Scripture meditation on the Fruit of the Spirit of Gentleness. Jesus was gentle. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29) This means that gentleness is a proper use of power. We all have power over something or someone. So the question becomes: Are we gentle in how we exert influence, or are we self-assertive and self-interested? Do we trust God and allow him to be in control, or do we assert ourselves and our agenda? Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit because it requires us to lay aside our agenda and our desires - and we need God’s help to do this well. We could use a little more gentleness in our world today. As you meditate on this passage, allow the Spirit to guide you into the Fruit of the Spirit of gentleness. The full meditation passage is as follows: Colossians 3:11-14. NLT 11 In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us. 12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. Faithfulness in the Face of Opposition | Guided Christian Meditation on Hebrews 12:1-3
This week’s podcast is a Guided Lectio Divina Scripture meditation on the Fruit of the Spirit of Faithfulness. What is faithfulness? Faithfulness, at its core, is believing and acting like God is exactly who He says He is. Even when we face opposition, we can still choose to be faithful. Trusting that God is with us. And that there is a day coming when all that is wrong will be made right. One way we remain faithful is by drawing courage from those who remained faithful in the past. Hebrews 11 catalogs some of the faithful – and now they form this great cloud of witnesses that cheer us on in our present struggles. They remind us that if they were able to remain faithful in the midst of their own uncertainty and challenges, then so can we. Yet, we still need God’s help to walk in faithfulness. This is why it is a Fruit of the Spirit. As you listen to this meditation in Hebrews 12:1-3, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you to what he has for us – and trust him to cultivate the fruit of faithfulness in your life. He will do it. The full meditation passage is as follows: Hebrews 12:1-3, NIV Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Cultivating Goodness | Guided Lectio Divina Christian Meditation on Galatians 6:9-10
This week’s podcast is a Guided Lectio Divina Scripture meditation on the Fruit of the Spirit of Goodness. Are you feeling weary? You aren’t alone. It’s easy to get discouraged when it feels like the good work we are doing isn’t getting the results we hoped for. Or the relationship isn’t getting better. Or it just feels like we keep hitting dead ends. Take a moment to breathe, reflect on, and remember the goodness of God through this guided meditation on Galatians 6. As you meditate, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you to what he has for us – and trust him to cultivate the fruit of goodness in your life. He will do it. Remember: God’s timing isn’t always our timing. But his timing is perfect and good. We will reap a harvest in his good timing, so don’t give up my friend. Keep walking in the good works God is calling you to. The full meditation passage is as follows: Galatians 6:9-10, NIV 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. The Power of Kind Words | Ephesians 4:29-32 Lectio Divina Guided Christian Meditation
This week’s podcast is a Lectio Divina guided Christian meditation on the Fruit of the Spirit of Kindness. Words have power. They can tear down or build up; heal or wound. We’ve all experienced destructive words and the deep wounds they leave behind. And hopefully, we can also recall words that have been spoken to us in kindness and love. Words that have encouraged us to be brave and take a leap of faith or to persevere when times feel challenging. How do we use our words? Are they full of kindness and love – or do they tend to be critical and harsh? Thankfully kindness is a Fruit of the Spirit, which means God longs to help us speak words of kindness. As you meditate on this passage from Ephesians, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you to what he has for us – and trust him to cultivate the fruit of kindness in your life. He will do it. The full meditation passage is: Ephesians 4:29-32, 29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. 30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. How to Walk in Patience and Forbearance | Lamentations 3:21-26 Lectio Divina Guided Meditation
This week’s podcast is a Lectio Divina guided Scripture Meditation on the Fruit of the Spirit of forbearance. Forbearance means patient self-control, restraint, and tolerance. Does anyone else need more forbearance in their lives? I know I do! Thankfully, forbearance is a Fruit of the Spirit, which means God longs to help us. One way we can cultivate a heart bent toward forbearance is by meditating on God’s unending forbearance with us. God extends grace upon grace to us. He never tires of us, never gets impatient with us and never gets worn out by us. Scripture says that he extends new mercy to us every morning – which means he extends it to us moment by moment and day by day. His mercy is always there for us, always new. What a gift. If God can love me like this, perhaps I can extend more loving forbearance to others. As you meditate on this passage from Lamentations, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you to what he has for us – and trust him to cultivate the fruit of more grace and forbearance in your life. He will do it. The whole meditation passage is as follows: Lamentations 3:21-26, NIV 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. The Path to True and Complete Joy | Guided Meditation in John 15:9-14
As we continue in our Meditation series of the Fruit of the Spirit, today we’re focusing on the second aspect of the Fruit of the Spirit: JOY. 🎙️In today's meditation, we’ll look closely at joy and how Jesus says we can find true and complete joy in our lives. 🌺 As you engage with this guided Scripture meditation, allow the Spirit to lead you to what he has for you. 🍎 Here are 3 takeaways from the episode that I don’t want you to miss: Joy is not dependent on our circumstances, but rather found in surrender and trust in God. Love is patient, kind, bears no envy, and keeps no record of wrongs. How can we embody these qualities? 🤔 In the guided Scripture meditation, you’ll be invited to create space to let the Spirit guide you into what he wants you to notice about love. And then you will have space to talk to him about whatever he’s revealing to you. Slow down, take a few deep breaths, and let God remind you of his love as he invites you to be more loving. The meditation text is: 1 Corinthians 13:1–7, NIV If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Moving from Weariness to Strength | Meditation on Isaiah 40:28-31
In this episode, Jodie Niznik, host of So Much More, leads you in a guided meditation to help you find renewed strength and hope using Isaiah 40:28-31. The passage was originally meant to encourage God’s people who were weary and wayward, and it also offers timeless truths and promises for us today. Here are 3 takeaways from this Meditation: Remember God's Everlasting Presence: Isaiah 40 reminds us that the Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. These timeless truths remind us of God's unceasing care and understanding, strengthening our hope in Him. Renew Your Strength: We all encounter times in our lives when we feel weary and weak. Isaiah 40 teaches us that God gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Through our hope in Him, our strength is renewed, allowing us to “soar on wings like eagles.” Rest in God's Understanding: God understands our weariness, weakness, and exhaustion even better than we do. In times of struggle, we can find solace in His knowing and loving presence, allowing His understanding to comfort and guide us. The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. The Tide-Turning Power of Hope | Benjamin Windle
Can any catastrophe be good? Benjamin Windle thinks so. He stumbled upon the term "good catastrophe" in the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien used this term to describe moments when all hope seemed lost, but then a sudden turn towards joy would occur. Windle was inspired by this redemptive message and borrowed Tolkien's words to express the truth that hope can help us discover good, even in catastrophe. Benjamin Windle is an empathic author and speaker. As a pastor for over 20 years, he’s walked with many people through the dark shadows and valleys of the human experience. He has dedicated his life to helping people overcome life’s challenges by growing deeper in their faith. Here’s a few timestamped highlights from our conversation: 00:01:59 The book's title, "Good Catastrophe," captures the idea that growth comes from pain. Benjamin Windle borrowed the word from JRR Tolkien. The concept of a "eucatastrophe" is a sudden turn towards joy in the midst of despair. 00:05:46 Benjamin and Jodie discuss the concept of "good catastrophe" and how life's challenges can ultimately lead to personal growth and a redemptive purpose. The author shares his own experience with loss and emphasizes the importance of embracing both the hardships and joys of life. 00:11:54 We discuss the concept of hope and the importance of friendship in difficult times. Benjamin draws from biblical examples to help us see that Hope is a communal experience, and having friends to rely on is crucial. 00:18:20 Benjamin issues a call for rediscovering hope in a complex world, emphasizing the teachings of Paul and the significance of the cross of Jesus. 00:21:49 In the book of Romans, Paul acknowledges the struggles he faced but maintained hope that he would not be crushed by them. His experience of hardship serves as a reminder that even when we feel overwhelmed, we can find strength in Jesus. 00:25:19 Benjamin encourages us that hope is a vantage point to see challenges. 00:26:56 Benjamin discusses the experience of enduring a recent season of loss, with a focus on finding hope and faith in the midst of his own difficulty. Hard-Pressed, But Not Crushed (Meditation on 2 Corinthians 4:8-10)
Some days feel crushing – like everything is caving in at once. Paul understood this when he said: We are hard-pressed, but not crushed. Perplexed, but not in despair. Persecuted, but not abandoned. Struck down, but not destroyed. If you’re feeling hard-pressed, listen in for a fresh breath of hope. Take a few quiet moments to listen to this Scripture from 2 Corinthians, reflect on its meaning, and respond to God's invitation. As we journey through this passage, we discover that even in the midst of challenging seasons, God is with us, and we can have hope because of Jesus. Once you’ve listened to the Scripture Meditation, don’t miss the bonus episode with pastor and author Benjamin Windle (Releases 9/6/23). We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. 9 We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. 10 Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. Does God Really Love Unconditionally? | Meditation on Romans 8:35, 37-39
Do you ever wonder if God really loves you? Or if there is something you can do to make him love you less? And if he does love you, then why do hard things happen? The short answer is God does love you. Nothing can change that. Hard things happen because we live in a broken world with broken people (including ourselves). Listen in to this week’s meditation as we focus on the hope found in God’s unconditional love for us. And that truth that overwhelming victory can be ours through this love. Overwhelming. Victory. If you aren’t experiencing this kind of victory in spite of your circumstances, listen in to this meditation and let the Spirit help you discern why. You can find Jodie at http://www.jodieniznik.com/ Instagram @creatingspaceforgod Facebook @JodieGNiznik Download free sample chapters from my Bible studies here. Download your free Lectio Divina Journal here. The full meditation passage is: Romans 8:35, 37-39 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? … 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. God is Always Working | Meditation on Romans 8:26-28
Even when you don’t know what to pray, God does. And even better – God is praying that perfect prayer on your behalf. Romans 8 tells us that the Holy Spirit and Jesus are interceding for us. The Spirit longs to help us in our weakness. So, when you don’t know how to pray, try sitting with God and letting him pray for you. He interprets the groans and longings of our hearts. He takes our weakness and turns it into strength. God has you. You can rest in him. You can place your hope in him. He is working all things together for God. This week, we will create some space to meditate on God’s Word and to sit quietly with God as he prays for us. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. How to Find Hope When Pain Overwhelms | Dr. Michelle Bengtson
In this episode, host Jodie Niznik interviews Dr. Michelle Bengtson, an esteemed clinical neuropsychologist, international speaker, and author of "The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out to God When Pain Overwhelms." Here are 3 key takeaways from this inspiring conversation: 1️. Pain is a universal experience: Dr. Bengtson reminds us that pain is a great equalizer, and everyone will experience trials in life. Whether it's physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual pain, we all need support and compassion during these challenging times. 2️. Be present for the pain sufferer: Often, well-meaning friends may unintentionally invalidate someone's pain by offering advice or solutions. Instead, simply being present, acknowledging their suffering, and offering practical assistance can make a profound difference. Let's be a listening ear and a helping hand. 3️. Holding onto hope in difficult seasons: Even when it feels like God is not answering our prayers or working in our lives, we can find inspiration in the story of the woman who touched Jesus' garment. By holding onto faith and reminding ourselves of God's faithfulness and love, we can experience peace and freedom amidst our pain. Here are a few timestamped highlights from our conversation: 02:59 What does a Neuropsychologist do? 08:51 Dr. Bengtson shares her struggle with depression and how finding healing became a powerful experience for Michelle. Initially shocked by her own battle with depression, she began taking the steps she would typically recommend to her patients - prioritizing rest, nutrition, exercise, therapy, and medication. However, these approaches proved insufficient in alleviating her depression. Michelle realized that she had been neglecting the spiritual aspect of her well-being and needed to address the spiritual roots of her disease. 12:02 Dr. Bengtson and Jodie discuss the meditation passage and how this woman, who had suffered for years, was some of the inspiration for her book. 18:03 Sometimes, God is more concerned about healing our hearts and relationship with Him, even in our pursuit of physical healing. God always knows what's best for us and never withholds anything good from us. 21:10 Dr. Bengtson shares how she has held onto her faith amidst chronic pain and suffering. 25:12 Dr. Bengtson shares how her time away from work helped her reframe her understanding of God’s love for her. 30:28 How can we be present with friends and loved ones in pain? Dr. Bengtson gives this helpful advice: see, value, and care. Be present and avoid hurtful comments. 33:51 Some closing words or comfort for those who are struggling with chronic pain. Dr. Bengtson wants us to remember that Jesus understands your pain and suffering. Don't lose hope. You are not alone in your struggles. Even if you don't have someone in your life who can relate, remember that God understands. Jesus endured great suffering, and through his experiences, he can empathize with us. Reaching Out for Jesus | Meditation on Mark 5:24-34
She never lost hope. Even after 12 years of painful suffering. Even after spending all she had. Even after becoming an outcast that was separated from her community. When she heard Jesus was near, she took the risk. In faith, she went. In faith, she reached out and touched Jesus. And her faith was rewarded. While we may not experience healing on this side of eternity, Jesus has much comfort and peace to offer us. As you meditate on this passage, allow the Lord to not only comfort you but also to help you notice what he has for you in these words. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Finding Hope in God’s Protection | Guided Meditation in Psalm 46
When life implodes, fear comes along for the ride. We’re left holding questions like: What now? What’s next? What if…? Psalm 46 reminds us that no matter what is happening, we can place our hope and trust in God because, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” And once we know God is in control, then we can be still and know that he is God. This guided meditation will help you remember that you can place your hope and trust in God, no matter the circumstances. The entire meditation text is here: Psalm 46, NIV 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Are We Reading Revelation Wrong? | Scot McKnight
It’s possible. According to Scot McKnight, Revelation’s main purpose isn’t speculation, it’s encouragement to follow Jesus as a dissident disciple. Scot McKnight is a renowned speaker, writer, professor, and equipper of the church. Jodie and Scot dive into the topic of interpreting the book of Revelation and the influence of the speculative approach known as dispensationalism. McKnight shares his belief that Revelation was written to help readers become dissident disciples - followers who resist the influence of evil “Babylon” and instead live as hope-filled followers of Jesus. He unpacks the symbolic characters and drama in the book, pointing out that there are two teams, Team Dragon and Team Lamb. And gives the spoiler that Team Lamb wins, so choose wisely whose team you are on. (I bet you already knew how the story ended!) The episode concludes with a hopeful exploration of Revelation's vision of a new heaven and earth, where God dwells with humanity and suffering is eliminated. Hope for a Better Future | Meditation on Revelation 21:1-4
We long for pain-free, grief-free days. Days that are filled with only good things. The problem is - those days never seem to come. There is always pain, death, and destruction. The effects of sin have left their mark on our world and our lives. It can be easy to lose hope, especially when we read the news. Will it ever end? Yes, it will. Revelation 21 tells the end of the story – or rather, the new beginning. A day of restoration. A day when the enemy is finally defeated. There is no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. The old order of things will pass away. As you meditate on this hope-filled passage, allow the Lord to help you notice what he has for you in these words. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. Jack helps us understand a better way. Second, I ask Jack to explain why Scripture says we are both filled with the Spirit and indwelt by the Spirit. Jack explains this and shares that he believes the filling of the Spirit is to propel us toward mission. This was super interesting to me. An interesting thing about Jack and his wife is that they live in a dorm at SMU with 185 undergraduate students. He tells us about some of the challenges and blessings of this. Jack shares where the Lord led him as he meditated on John 14. So amazing to see the living and active Word at work! I love how God showed him something new in the passage. This leads us to talk about one of the secrets he discovered about life with the Spirit – we need to saturate ourselves in Scripture. The Spirit will help us recall – but we need something to recall first. This is why we need to be filling ourselves with God’s word. Jack tells us why failed Bible study can be some of the best Bible study. This is interesting! We then talk about how God has upended some things in Jack’s life as he’s studied God’s word. He tells us how his views have changed on some critical issues. Finally, Jack ends with some encouragement for us found in Acts 8 and the life of Philip. Super encouraging – and maybe a bit convicting. The Spirit Will Teach and Remind You (Meditation on John 14:25-27)
In some of Jesus’s last words, he told the disciples that the Spirit would come to teach and remind them of everything he had said. And then he stated he was also leaving them with his peace. The disciples didn’t understand yet. But the Spirit would soon help them understand and remember. What a gift – given to them and us. As you meditate on this passage, allow the Lord to help you notice what he has for you in these words. What Does it Mean to be Human? | Carmen Joy Imes
What if every human being is the image of God? What would that change about how we view ourselves and others? In the episode, Carmen Joy Imes, author of Being God’s Image: Why Creation Still Matters, helps us unpack this critical question. Carmen Joy Imes is an associate professor of Old Testament at Biola University. A graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, she is the author of Bearing YHWH's Name at Sinai, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters, and the editor of Praying the Psalms with Augustine and Friends. Some highlights from our conversation: Carmen shares the distinction between being God’s image and bearing God’s image – and why she thinks it’s critical we understand that we don’t just bear the image of God, but we are the image of God. We discuss the creation story found in Genesis 1 and how God creates and fills. She helps us see God’s pattern of creation. Carmen shares how the Lord led her in her time meditation on Genesis 1. I love that Carmen has pretty much written an entire book on the creation account, yet God still had something new for her in this passage. We discuss how, when you read the creation account closely, God didn’t create a hierarchy between male and female. Carmen shares the implication for why being God’s image is so important – and how that gives every human inherent dignity and worth. Carmen and I talk about why the creation accounts in Genesis 1 and 2 are different. Carmen shares her research on what it means for a woman in Genesis 2:18 to be called a “suitable helper” or an “ezer.” Carmen has profound insight into why she believes a woman was the first to see Jesus after his resurrection. Don’t miss this. It’s so good. Does creation care and stewarding matter today? Carmen believes so. Listen as she unpacks why our earthly home and bodies still matter. Finally, Carmen encourages us to base our identity in Genesis 1 and 2, as people created by God and in his image, versus Genesis 3, as people marked by the fall and in need of grace. Both are true, but where we start matters. GREAT NEWS! Created in the Image of God (Meditation Genesis 1:26-28)
Let’s go back to the beginning, where it was good - very good. Genesis says, "God created them; male and female he created them." And God gave them the job of ruling and reigning together. This passage may be familiar to you. But as you hear the words, ask the Spirit to help them become new. He will guide you to notice what he has for you. His Word is living and active, so God may help you see something you haven’t noticed before. Once you’ve listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, head to the next episode and listen to the interview with Old Testament scholar, professor, and author Carmen Joy Imes. Why We Needed Another Bible Translation | Terry Wildman
It all started when Terry found a Hopi translation of the Bible that no one could read. Sadly, the Hopi people were never taught to read their language, so it sat in a shed gathering dust. This made Terry realize that the Native American people didn’t have a translation that spoke to them in their heart language. Terry started small. He wrote and recorded, The Great Story from the Sacred Book. And it won the award for Best Spoken World from the Native American Music Awards. This began the journey that resulted in him and a team of translators translating the New Testament into what we now call the First Nations Version. A beautiful translation that will speak to your heart, Native American or not. Some highlights from our conversation: Terry shares the backstory of the FNV. It all started when he was serving as a pastor to the Hopi people, and he found a Hopi translation of the Bible that no one could read. This helped him realize that most First Nations people could not read in their own language and there was no translation that really spoke to them in their heart language. Terry started slowly with audio recording. This recording won the Best Spoken Word award for the Native American Music Awards. Terry realized then that this was a needed project. We talk about some of the decisions he and the translation team made with names. And why that matters so much in the Native American culture. We discuss the oral culture – and how this translation leans into the patterns of oral storytelling. The FNV is a dynamic equivalence translation. Dynamic equivalence allows the translator to make edits as needed, so the translated text is comprehensible within the receiving culture. Oftentimes the target audience is not familiar with the source language or culture and needs idioms and references explained or localized to make sense. Terry shares the Lord’s prayer with us and how he thought through the phrase, “give us our daily bread.” And how daily bread for native American people would have been different than bread. So he used words like buffalo, corn, squash, and wild rice to communicate this truth. Another important change they made was in how they translated the word “sin.” Many Native American people were told long hair was a sin, speaking in their native language was a sin – even being a Native American person felt sinful to them. Since this word had been abused, Terry sought a new way to communicate this truth. He came up with “bad hearts and broken ways.” Terry also shares his vision for how all people groups can learn from each other. It’s beautiful. We end with a discussion on Ephesians 4 and Terry closes us by reading the Lord’s Prayer and praying over us. Don’t miss this! Why Distraction is Destructive | Katie Westenberg
What’s the cost of living a distracted life? Katie Westenberg, author of But Then She Remembered, believes it's dangerously high. She argues that our minds dwell on what our hearts and minds focus on. And if God isn’t our focus, then we will not only get distracted but derailed. The solution is to remember. Remember who your God is and what he has called you to do. Here’s a few highlights from our conversation: Katie and I discuss how she started to see distraction as a detriment in her life. The main source of distraction is, of course, technology. Katie has some great tips for us on how to use technology wisely. We then turn to why remembering is important and Katie reminds us that God commanded the Israelites to remember. And when they forgot – they wandered off course. The same is true for us. We talk about Psalm 77 and Katie shares how the Lord led her as she meditated on the passage. Katie shares some ways God has invited her to remember. And she reminds us that we don’t need to feel shame in our weakened memories but to ask the Spirit to help us remember. One of the beautiful gifts the Spirit gives us is to help us remember. One way Katie has intentionally focused on remembering God’s truth is through Scripture memory. When distractions creep into Katie’s life, she said her favorite trick is to speak to the distraction. So instead of mindlessly picking up her phone, she will say to herself – or anyone around her – I’m going to look this up on my phone. I loved this trick because I’ve been known to pick up my phone for one reason, get distracted, and then 15 minutes later, wonder why I grabbed my phone in the first place! I know I’m not the only one! Katie closes with sharing her take on what it means to take every thought captive (from 2 Corinthians 10:5) Here’s how you can connect with Katie: https://katiewestenberg.com/ Follow him on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/katie_westenberg/ Follow him on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KatieWestenbergauthor You can find Jodie at http://www.jodieniznik.com/ Instagram @creatingspaceforgod Facebook @JodieGNiznik Download free sample chapters from my Bible studies here. I Will Remember (Meditation on Psalm 77:11-15)
How do you find comfort when you’re distressed? The author of Psalm 77 found comfort through remembering. Remembering who God is and what he has done. As you meditate on this Psalm, may it help you remember and recall God’s faithfulness in the past and present. Allow the Lord to help you notice what he has for you in these words. Perhaps you have some remembering to do. Once you’ve listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, don’t miss the next episode with Katie Westenberg (Releases 5/17/23). Surprising Ways Women Served in the Early Church | Nijay Gupta
Whoa! What if we’ve been overlooking some critical information in Scripture? Especially about women and their roles in the New Testament church. This is what Dr. Nijay Gupta contends in his new book Tell Her Story. If you’ve ever wondered about the role of women in the early church and the church today, you need to listen to this encouraging and insightful conversation. Nijay introduces us to women you may not know about and their critical roles in advancing the Gospel. This conversation deeply blessed me. I hope it will do the same for you. Dr. Nijay Gupta is a professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. Previously, he was a professor of New Testament at Portland Seminary, where he also oversaw the Master's thesis program, and advises doctoral students. He is the author of the book Worship That Makes Sense to Paul and Prepare, Succeed, Advance: A Guidebook for Getting a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies and Beyond, Bible commentaries, and over a dozen academic articles in theological journals. And his newest book: Tell her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church. **** GREAT NEWS! IVP is giving so much more listeners 30% and free shipping with the code MUCHMORE until May 24, 2023. You can find his book here: https://www.ivpress.com/tell-her-story Here are a few highlights from our conversation: We start with Deborah from the Old Testament, and while Nijay’s work is really to help us see women in the New Testament church, Deborah sets a helpful foundation. We then focus on women Paul wrote about with high praise. These women, tucked away in Romans 16, have often been overlooked. But what Nijay shares with us is revolutionary. We also discuss the structure of the Roman household, how it’s very different from today, and how some women held surprising roles in the home – and, as a result, the church. Finally, we talk about Jesus and his relationship with women. All four Gospels tell us that women were the first to see Jesus resurrected. What does this mean? It Happened Just as Jesus Said it Would (Meditation on Matthew 28:5-10)
Mary and the other Mary went to the tomb to see Jesus. He wasn’t there. At first, they were confused. But then they encountered an angel who helped them understand what happened and told them what to do next. They hurried off. On the way, they encountered the resurrected Jesus. Can you imagine? They fell at his feet, clinging to him. They loved him dearly. He told them, “Don’t be afraid. Go tell the others.” You’ve probably read this account before. But there is something in it for you today. As you meditate ask the Lord to help you notice what he wants you to notice. Once you’ve listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, don’t miss the next episode with professor and author Nijay Gupta (Releases 5/10/23) We discuss the surprising roles women played in the early church. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

Why the Christian Life Isn't Working | Ben Sternke and Matt Tebbe
Everyone's faith journey evolves. Many of us have been deconstructing and reconstructing, tearing down practices and beliefs that don’t work as we seek to rebuild something that does. Matt Tebbe and Ben Sternke, authors of Having the Mind of Christ: Eight Axioms to Cultivate a Robust Faith, discovered, through their own personal journeys and as they guided others, that many were becoming disillusioned and needed help reconstructing their faith. They turned to Jesus as the model and started to see that Jesus operated under some basic assumptions about God and his Kingdom. As they dug and learned, they identified eight foundational principles that Jesus assumed and operated under – starting with love. They say the first foundational principle this way: God is love, so it’s all about love. It seems logical on the surface but dig deeper, and you’ll quickly see that we may believe this is true, but we don’t really live it. Matt and Ben are cofounders of Gravity Leadership and co-pastors at The Table in Indianapolis. Listen in as we talk about their story, why they wrote this book, why love matters, and hear their insights on Mark 3. GREAT NEWS: IVP is giving So Much More Listeners 30% off and free shipping until 5.17.23 with the code MUCHMORE You can get a copy here: https://www.ivpress.com/having-the-mind-of-christ Some highlights from our conversation: Matt tells us about his journey of deconstruction and how it created dissonance in his life that he could no longer ignore. He says: It’s not working anymore, but I can’t quit Jesus Ben also shares his story and how he saw leaders failing. This made him question: “Is there a way to do ministry that’s rooted in love?” We talk about how they decided on the eight axioms and what they are. We dive into the first one: God is love, so it’s all about love. And if we believe this, how many parts of our life do we live as if it’s really all about love? We talk about some of the practices they offer in the book as opportunities for us to live like these axioms are true. We end processing through Mark 3 and what it meant to both Matt and Ben. A golden nugget toward the end of our conversation is when we discuss our real pain. Sometimes what God is up to is different than we would think because the goal is eternity. Hopefully, we can say on the other side of the experience: I wouldn’t wish this on a friend, But I can’t imagine having not gone through it. We wrap up with a discussion on our meditation passage from Mark 3. Why was Jesus angry? And what was the man’s role in this whole scenario? Stretch Out Your Hand (Meditation on Mark 3:1-5)
It was the Sabbath. Jesus was in the synagogue and a man needed healing. What would he do? The religious leaders were looking for a reason to accuse and discredit Jesus. If he healed the man, Jesus would break the letter of the law. But what about the intent of the law? And what about the heart of God, who created the law? So Jesus asks, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” The religious leaders were silent. They had no answer. They became trapped by their pride and misunderstanding. But Jesus acts in love. He heals. As you meditate on Mark 3, allow the Spirit to help you notice something from these words that applies to your own life. Once you’ve listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, head over to the next episode and listen to the interview with pastors and authors Matt Tebbe and Ben Sternke. Leaning into the Gift of Restlessness | Casey Tygrett
No one asks for restless moments. No one wants to feel irritated, unsettled, or stuck. But what if restlessness is normal, healthy, and even holy? And what if we need to pay attention to our restlessness as an invitation from God? In the episode, Casey Tygrett, author of The Gift of Restlessness: A Spirituality for Unsettled Seasons, helps us unpack a new way to view restlessness. Casey holds a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual formation. He is a Spiritual Director and the director of spiritual direction practice for Soul Care, which helps church and nonprofit leaders restore health to their souls. He is also the author of Becoming Curious: A Spiritual Practice of Asking Questions, and As I Recall: Discovering the Place of Memories in Our Spiritual Life. And he is the host of the podcast Restlessness Is A Gift. Some highlights from our conversation: Casey defines restlessness as that unsettled feeling when we feel stuck in the present, know we can’t go back to the way things used to be, and we are uncertain about the future. Casey shares that restlessness is a gift because it leads to formation. It helps us ask deeper questions about ourselves and God. We discuss the meditation passage from Mark 1:9-13 and how even Jesus, the beloved Son of God, was led into the wilderness and a season of restlessness. We talk about how this should encourage us. And Casey shares how the phrase “and the wild beasts and angels attended him” gave him a deeper understanding of what restlessness is like. Casey asks deep questions throughout his book, and we discuss one of them: What is my purpose? Casey shares how purpose can get distorted to be one specific thing, and while it can sometimes be that, the bigger question is about love. Don’t miss this section to hear Casey’s insight on love as the big purpose of our life. We discuss how to know if restlessness is an invitation from God to make a change – or just something we need to push through. Casey highly recommends Spiritual Direction as one way to discern. Spiritual Direction can create a safe space to sort through the questions and listen for God’s next steps. I asked Casey to walk us through a season where he processed through restlessness. Casey shared two questions he asks when he’s walking through restlessness: Do you trust God? And Does God trust you?
