S1 Ep 23EPISODE 23 – THE POWER OF A GREAT HEADLINE!
Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 23 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Thanks for tuning in today, I know you have loads of options to listen to – so I really appreciate you lending your ears to me today! Sending podcast love for that! How do you go about writing your headlines or captions at the moment? Is it something you labour over or is it a super quick exercise for you? Headlines (or captions on Instagram) are so very important. Did you know that a reader will read the first 3 and last 3 words of your headline and gauge from them whether they want to click or read on? I guess if it's shorter than 3 words, they read the first and last and not the middle is the point I'm making – our brains are funny things aren't they – but it's true, we don't really read everything. So today we are looking at how to write engaging headlines which leads to a click and the reader reading our whole post or article or caption. But before we go down that rabbit hole, let's do this week's discovery of the week! THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! And fittingly it's about headlines! It's a headline analyser. Just go to https://coschedule.com/headline-analyzer, put in your headline and it'll tell you all about the science behind your chosen words and will give you a score out of 100. You do need to sign up to it, but it is free. So, if you are often stuck here, at the beginning, at writing your headline – this little discovery just might unblock that roadblock for you! As always, just a little disclaimer, my discoveries are just that and I am in no way affiliated with any of them but promise to tell you if I ever am. I just love them and from the response of my listeners, you guys, you are loving them too! Hey and if you have a little discovery, or something you use in your business that you'd like to share, please do so. Email me at [email protected] or tag me @smallbusinessmadesimple. I really love to know what tools you use to help make your life simpler! THE POWER OF THE HEADLINE – 6 TIPS FOR GETTING IT RIGHT! Back in the 80's, David Ogilvy famously wrote, "On the average, five times as many people read the headlines as read the body copy." Clearly that was before social media and the internet because today I think, and it's just my opinion, that saying between 500 and 5000 people would read the headline and not the copy – think about it – how many things have your scroll past just today and haven't bothered to click or read the rest of the body copy? Headlines are powerful – when I say headlines, it does include captions also. Because on Instagram we talk in captions. Instagram is a perfect example of needing to have a great caption or headline. You get less than 2 lines to grab your readers attention, to get them to click and read more. So how much time and energy do you put into your headlines or captions? Whether you're writing a blog, a social post, an article, a subject line in an email, powerful headlines are crucial to your success and the success of the piece you've written. Your headline simply allows the reader to make the "to read or not to read" decision. Marie Forleo famously said on her podcast one day that she writes up to 50 headlines for every piece of content she puts out there – she believes that the gold starts to come around the 30 mark! I remember thinking, oh my gosh, I don't have that much time to write up to 50 headlines! And I'm guessing I'm not alone there! As a content marketer, you win the battle for engagement by making your headlines irresistible. So, let's have a look at some tactics bound to help you improve your headline writing chops! Ask Posing a question, one of the oldest tricks in the book, remains one of the best ways to engage a reader. Talk about benefits not features. Features tend to bore readers. Always go the benefits – how will your product or service benefit the reader? (This is where knowing your audience and who you want to attract comes into play, yet again!). Use specific data or numbers in your headline Integrating specific numbers and data into your headline is an effective way to make your headlines more enticing to readers. Several research studies have shown that headlines with numbers tend to generate 73% more social shares and engagement. Numbers not only stand out in a headline, but our brain is more respective to them. Just a pro-tip – when using numbers, make them unusual – so they really stand out. So, instance, 1917 stands out more than 1900 – it's just how we see it. Unusual numbers are easier to capture readers attention. Sometimes, odd numbers make it more believable too. If my subject line was "how to increase your Instagram following by 2000 people in 7 days, it's less believable than 1678 in 7 days. Use Rationales Use rationales to engage with readers – rationales such as tips, reasons, lessons, tricks, ideas, ways, principles, facts, secrets, strategies etc etc. Here's some example:: 5 Tips to Write Blog Introductions Like a Pro 15 Lessons I

S1 Ep 22EPISODE 22 – 5 WAYS TO LOVE YOUR CLIENTS WELL
Hey there, Jenn here - welcome. Welcome to Episode 22 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Today's marketplace is so noisy and crowded and it's so hard to stand out. I should know – I'm in social media and marketing – there's probably one of us for every street corner in Australia! So, standing out comes down to 3 elements – know, like and trust. Trust being a massive one! It can be hard to get a new client or new customer, even harder to have them be a repeat customer or client and even harder for them to become an advocate for your business (you know the clients who tell others how awesome you are!). So today I thought I'd touch on 5 Ways we can love our clients well. Because success is no accident! As we work through today's episode, I want you to be thinking about the last time you had a fantastic experience with someone you are either going to purchase from or have already? And then perhaps the complete opposite – who you'd never shop or engage with again because of X (chances are it's how they made you feel right?). But before we get into that, let's do our discovery of the week – are you loving this segment? If you are do me a favour and screen shot your phone listening in and tag me in your Instagram stories @smallbusinessmadesimple. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! This week's discovery is an app called Quik – Q U I K . With the Quik app, you can create awesome videos with just a few taps. Choose your favourite photos and video clips then let Quik work its magic. In seconds, it finds great moments, adds beautiful transitions and effects, and syncs everything to the beat of the music. Customize your story with text, music and easily share it on our social accounts or with friends. It's very easy and can be a little fun. It's fabulous for building short videos from still photos for Facebook ads – as well as loads of those reasons! 5 STEPS TO LOVE YOUR CLIENTS WELL step one:: Understand their needs and desires and then create touch points that meet them right where they are! Building the most heartfelt client experience starts with knowing your clients. And I'm not just talking about knowing their names and what they do for a living but deeper things like -- what they value, what matters most to them, and their personal goals and dreams – know these things and then creating a series of client experience touch points that meet them right where they are in their journey becomes simpler! Plus, if we can create experiences that speak to their pain points -- whatever is standing in their way of achieving greatness -- then we can show them we are trustworthy peeps who are here to help them reach their dreams, be that through a flawless wedding, an intentional branding project, or a top notch shopping experience. So, let's go deeper … Who are your ideal clients? What do they value? What matters most to them? Where are they currently struggling? Bonus point if you can answer these questions:: How can your product or service help them alleviate that struggle or overcome that hurdle? What are touch points you can weave throughout your client experience that meets them right where they are? Maybe that's through a thoughtful gift; a kind, educational way of guiding them through your process; or the messaging you use on your website and social channels. Step 2:: Think back to the last incredible, worth telling all your friends and family kind of experience you had with a brand. How did that make you feel? Chances are, some of your most memorable experiences with other brands centres around a strong sense of belonging or feeling valued – and other positive emotions. As business owners ourselves, we want to harness that opportunity to inspire our potential (and current) clients to feel something whenever they come across our brand online or in person. Not to mention, authentic emotional responses help us lay the foundation for relationships that last. Making customers raving fans. So, let's go deeper:: How do you want your potential clients and current clients to feel whenever they come across you or your brand? Why do you want to make them feel those specific emotions? What is it about those emotions that will help them have a deeper appreciation for your work, encourage them to invest in your services, or put them in the proper mindset to receive the full experience you've prepared for them? Pro tip: Steer clear of gimmicky emotions that don't stand for something deeper. Have your clients have an authentic emotional respon

S1 Ep 21EPISODE 21 – 7 WAYS TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS ON A SHOESTRING
Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 21 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. I was recently hanging out in one of my favourite groups on Facebook and someone put a post-up asking what people would like to know when it comes to running a small business. The number one answer was "how to market my business on a shoestring budget" or words to those effect. I love the fact that people understand that they need to be marketing their business and what benefit that has, which is exposure and sales of course, and there is lots of ways, which I'll discuss shortly, that you can market for little or no money, but at the end of the day we do need to invest back into our businesses and have a marketing budget. But I get it, when you're starting out – money is tight. So today I'm going to give you 7 ways you can market your business on a shoestring. But before I do that, of course, this Week's Discovery of the Week. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! This week's discovery is a little ripper – or actually a big ripper. Have you ever taken the time to look at all the GOLD in the Chrome extension webstore? No? Well I highly highly recommend you do. Just google, Chrome webstore and you'll be amazed. I'd recommend you tick the "free" box in the right-hand side and see what's available for free and work from there. There are some pretty awesome discoveries in there which will definitely make your business simpler. I recently came across the Hunter's Chrome extension lets you immediately find the email addresses behind the websites you're browsing. Now when it comes to list building this extension could be business/life changing. It does have a free version as well as paid and fits beautiful into this week's subject of marketing your business on a shoestring – which you'll see it seamlessly fitting in shortly when we get into the episode! 7 WAYS TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS ON A SHOESTRING Before I set out and give you these 7 ways, I want to you to hear this. Some of these 7 costs a little and some will cost nothing. BUT all will cost your biggest commodity of TIME. Nothing is for free because you are WORTH something too. Your time, your expertise, YOU are worth something. Never forget that. In small business we tend forget that the resource of time is not free. We can always make more money – but we can't make more time. So when you're looking at free or low cost marketing options – make sure you make a note or a mental note of how much time it took and times those hours by your hourly rate (or what it should be) and get a clear picture of what "free" or "low cost" actually looks like. Ok, getting down off my high horse now … Ok, let's get into it – 7 Ways to Market your business on a shoestring. START AN EMAIL LIST If you listen to some of the best, most successful small business owners in our country and beyond they will say that their biggest regret is that they didn't start building a list of customers/clients earlier. So how do you go about it? Sign up for a free program, such as Mail Chimp – it's free until you get a list of about 2000. Their packages have recently changed, so you might need to check the new packages out. Spend time thinking about how you can solve your clients or customers biggest challenge and design a lead magnet around it. A lead magnet can take lots of different forms from a checklist to a PDF download guide to a video series to an eBook to a resource guide. In fact, if you go to www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/magnetideas I have 69 of them there. Once you have your magnet, you promote it everywhere your ideal client or customer hangs out and exchange your awesome piece of content that solves their problem for an email address. Or offer a prize and promote that online and offline if you have a shop front. Exchange the chance to win for an email address. If you're going to do this though, have a listen to Episode 11 – all about running online competitions – you need to make sure you're within the rules. List building is something I am totally passionate about and if you head back to Episodes 9 and 10, they are all about list building. I recommend you listen in. Of course, once you start building your list. You need a plan to keep in contact with them – but for now, START. Make list building your priority as free marketing of your business and maybe use the Chrome extension mentioned in the discovery to reach out and potentially connect with someone you really want to work with or for but don't know how to g

S1 Ep 20EPISODE 20 – 16 TIPS FOR USING LINKEDIN IN YOUR MARKETING MIX
Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 20 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. How are you today? I hope you are going well, achieving this week's goals and having a laugh as you go along. Today I'm touching on a subject I haven't spoken about on the Podcast and yet find myself using everyday and quite successfully too, I might add! That's LinkedIn. Are you on it? Do you even know what it is? Or how you can use it to drive leads and connections in your business? Well today we are covering all that and more with my 16 tips for using LinkedIn. LinkedIn is an obvious choice for professional services businesses and is a great way for these businesses to produce content to establish themselves as an authority in their field. It is also great for building a database of contacts. With more than 575 million users worldwide, and 9 million Australians, the network provides an opportunity to develop strong business connections with a large number of people. But before we go down the LinkedIn rabbit hole, let's do this week's discovery of the week! THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! Ok this week's discovery is something I've known about for a while – but haven't used to its full potential in my business – until now! And now I'm totally hooked. Have you heard of Creative Market? Creative Market is an online marketplace for community-generated design assets. And what do I mean by design assets – I mean things like Instagram templates, eBook templates, PDF downloadable guide templates, fonts, oh my gosh – so so much. Now as a big, huge, massive fan of Canva – which I've talked about lots on this podcast – I failed to see, to my detriment, for years the advantage of Creative Market. But it's amazing. It sits somewhere between Canva – do it yourself and hiring a designer. Ok, to help you understand it better – for instance, I've recently purchased a template for doing my latest eBook – 7 Sure-Fire Ways to Grow Your Instagram. All the design work was done for me. I purchased it, I think it was around $35 (uhm it would take me hours to do this and I work for more than $35 an hour), I uploaded it to Canva (some of them you can do this) and basically loaded my photos and copy into it and hey presto, it was done. Formatted, styled and on brand! YAY! For a better understanding, head to www.creativemarket.com. And remember, yes things do cost money to purchase, they're not free, but what's your hourly rate again?!?!? Oh, but just another little tip – if you sign up for the newsletter you can get loads of awesome freebies! Hey, also, if you want my 7 Sure-Fire Ways to Grow Your Instagram – head to www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/instagram 16 TIPS FOR USING LINKEDIN IN YOUR MARKETING MIX The best way to describe LinkedIn is a professional Facebook. And I can't tell you how true this is. Last year one of my LinkedIn connections and acquaintances posted a blog post to both Facebook and LinkedIn. The picture that went with the blog, so like the header picture, was of women in bathing suits – which I have to admit I thought was a bit odd considering this person was a LinkedIn expert – not really talking about bathing suits in the blog post – so a photo put there for "stopping the scroll" eye catching purposes rather than related to the blog post. To see the different reactions on the different platforms almost blew my mind. Seriously, the people on Facebook were like hungry pack of dogs. Ripping into this person with statements about women's rights and sexism and using sex to sell – an absolute shamble and so detrimental to a brand. However, same article, same picture on LinkedIn was dealt with by a single person requesting that the picture be changed because it really wasn't appropriate for the article written – to which the author responded with a "sure, deepest apologies". That was it. The professionalism of LinkedIn was evident. We're all professionals – the article wasn't so professional but like professionals and rational people, we simply said "hey, I think you should take it down". On Facebook, it was like a war declared on a small country. Disgraceful really. Have you seen any examples like this? So that's why calling LinkedIn a professional Facebook rings true to me. So, is LinkedIn for you? If you want to grow your network, do online networking, set yourself in your industry as the expert, go to person, create opportunities including employment and/or business ventures, then I think it's for you. Or if you're sick of the trolls on

S1 Ep 19EPISODE 19 - DO YOU THINK LIKE A MARKETER?
Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 19 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. One of the worst things with having an episodic show like this Podcast is that I know it's week 19 of 2019 – WEEK 19! It's flying Brain! So last week, we spoke about what marketing is – if you missed that – head back to Episode 18 and have a listen. So, this week I thought we might see if you think like a marketer? Because if we know that marketing is everything and understand we're in the business of marketing (yep, you are!), then is that how you approach business, is that how you think? But before we get into that, let's do this week's discovery. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! This week's discovery is a bit vain. I'll admit it straight up. But if you're not a big video fan, aka being in videos yourself, then this might help. You see I have a tonne of video I need to do. For instance, my goal is to make all these little discoveries into videos and put them on my YouTube channel – which I have just started, heads up! Part of it is making time, the other part comes from "mmm, today I can't be bothered doing my makeup and hair and, and, and – excuses, total excuses – don't worry I get that. So, this little app I've found has filters in it for video. It's called Snow and you'll find it in your app store. Like I said, it's vain but what it does is simply puts a filter over your face – to make you look like you have makeup on when you don't and therefore you can't use that weak, horrible excuse anymore – you just have to do the videos! Of course, there's loads of filters and it can do photos as well as videos as well as putting music over videos and probably 1000 other things I haven't experimented with before. But for more, it's making my life simpler (which is the aim of the podcast) because it's taking away my excuses not to do video. Plus, I'm having fun experimenting! Hope you do too! DO YOU THINK LIKE A MARKETER? There's a clear distinction between a small business owner who has a marketers-mindset and one that does not. So, let's take the test. If you can grab a piece of paper, do that or scribble answers in your phone notes or if you're out and about (or in the bath!) just remember your choices! Choose a or b Question 1 A) You see your key role in the business as being the DOER. Outsourcing scares you. You're a give it to me, I can do it better/faster/quicker. or B) You know your money-making activities, inside your business, and you give them your core time. You happily outsourcing lower level tasks to others. Ok A or B Question 2 A) The sale is the sale right in front of you – it's all about dollars in the door, with little thought given to future sales opportunities of prospects. OR B) You concentrate more on create a lifetime customer than a single sale. You want clients who you can turn into raving fans, rather than just chasing another quick sale to make ends meet. Again, A OR B Question 3 A) Everyone is your customer/client and you try and tell everyone about everything you do in the belief that by telling maximum number of people you increase your chances of making a sale of something. B) You know who your ideal customer is, who your who is, and you target them. Your message is targeted at those people. A or B Ok, Question 4 A) If I look at my marketing, captions, brochures (marketing messages) they are 'I' and "ME focussed, telling people who YOU are, what YOU do and how well YOU do it. OR B) My marketing is CUSTOMER CENTRIC, focusing whether possibly on them and the problems I solve Did you choose A or B – ok last one Question 5 A) You are constantly telling prospects why they should buy from you and showcasing your products and services B) You recognise the value in investing time in creating a content to nurture your prospects until they are ready to buy and giving value, value, value before you ask for any sale. You want quality over quantity. Ok, so now did you get all A's or all B's or a mixture? If you naturally choose option B then you are thinking like a marketer, if however, you recognise that you are practising a lot of option A strategies, you may want to reconsider your approach. Until you begin to think like a MARKETER, your progress in business is likely to be slow, and the number of clients you create will be low, no matter how good your product or service. This was a little quiz I did many years ago. I've adapted it for you guys here, but it was one of those learning turning points for me when I started

S1 Ep 18EPISODE 18 – WHAT IS MARKETING?
Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 18 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. If you follow me on social media at all you might have noticed a post I put up a few weeks ago, in my group Like Minded Business Owners – and several other groups asking what people thought the difference between Marketing and Advertising was. I can tell you there are some VERY passionate people out there who contributed to the answer of this question. Almost everybody got what advertising is – a process of marketing. But there was many varied answers to what marketing is – so that's the discussion on the podcast today. What is Marketing? But first, of course, our discovery of the week. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! Again, if you follow me on Instagram @smallbusinessmadesimple you might have noticed that in my captions I'm playing with different fonts. Not only is it fun to use different fonts and pretty cool, but I see different fonts as a way to differentiate my posts and stop the thumb scroll but "disrupting" the eye scroll – after all marketing is all about test and measure and this is one of my test and measures. Not it's not an app – it's a webpage. It www.lingojam.com – and you type in your caption (or the first part of it mostly), choose which font you'd like and then to copy and paste it into Instagram or into your Notes on your phone like I do. Notes is where I create my captions and then cut and paste them into Instagram – that way I know the formatting will work. Lingojam will of course work on any platform or in an email or any marketing but I've started using it for Instagram to look a little different! It's one of those little secrets that I would really like to hold onto as if everyone does it, it will no longer be different, so if we could keep it between you and me that'd be great!! WHAT IS MARKETING? So, what is marketing? My answer is simple and was drummed into me by my mentor many years ago for many years! Quite frankly, marketing is EVERYTHING and it's the business you are in. No matter what your business is, retail, service, not-for-profit, whatever, you are actually in the business of marketing. If you change your mindset from, I am a retailer – to I am a marketer you will change the quality of your results fairly quickly. Why is it everything? Because everything you do or say is saying something about you whether you meant it or not. EVERYTHING! For the sceptics – I really do mean everything. Marketing is much more complex then running a big, expensive ad campaign and waiting for the sales to come in. Marketing is across all aspects of your business and across all customer contact points including your website, your building frontage, how you answer your phone, your marketing campaigns, your sales process, how you and your team present yourselves (in person, on the phone and after hours), how you present your shop, how you present your products and how you deal with your customers – the good, the bad and the ugly – the list is endless because we are talking EVERYTHING. I owned an amazing kitchenware business with my best friend for many years. We built it from scratch. We poured our heart and soul into that business which rewarded us in an endless amount of ways. We built a successful brand – we worked extremely hard – but our brand became us, and we became our brand. But owning a large retail shop in a regional area also meant you were well known, well respected and well-judged from the outside (we all know the feeling as business owners don't, we!). We never took that marketing hat off – well occasionally we did – outside our regional centre, well outside! In the supermarket, I wore my brand because my customers were their customers. Out for dinner, with my family, I wore my brand because my customers ate there too. At school board meetings, I wore my brand because they were my customers also. I'm not complaining – far from it – I'm just making a point. Marketing is everything. One of my favourite sayings is "your bank balance is not a reflection of you but a reflection on how well you market what you do". As Ralph Emerson put it "what you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you're saying". So, I walk into your business or you hand me a business card with a mistake on it or a badly photocopied brochure and you say "I'm an expert at" … I'm thinking no you're not – because what you are is speaking so loudly, I cannot hear what you're saying. It's not so much about what you're saying but what I'm hearing

S1 Ep 17EPISODE 17 – 5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO CREATE A FACEBOOK GROUP
Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 17 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Today we're talking about Facebook groups. How many Facebook Groups are you in right now? I bet most of you wouldn't know the exact number and couldn't list off every single one. I know I couldn't. You know what else I'd bet money on? That there are a few groups that you'd be able to think of immediately. Those that offer value to you, in which you engage and build relationships with fellow members. Perhaps you own some Facebook groups? Or admin some? Or perhaps you've heard the hype and wonder if they are for you and your business. I'm growing one – Like Minded Business Owners – if you're not a member yet, head over there and join up – I would love to see you in there. Link is in the show notes or head to Facebook and search like-minded business owners. Well that's all the bits and bobs we're going to talk about today. But first, of course, our discovery of the week. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! This week's discovery is https://placeit.net/ - Smart Templates Make Design Easy. There is 100's of things you can do on this page all of which I have not experimented with before. But I have found something so so useful on the webpage. Now have you ever wanted a photo for your website, social media, print marketing which is someone looking at their phone or tablet and it's your website or your Instagram, Facebook or your picture that they are looking at? Or wanted to take your lead magnets covers or flyers to the next level? Well me too! I certainly have and this website makes it SO easy to get pictures like that. And if you've never thought about it – well now you just might because you know how easy it is! I'm not a big fan of stock images. Yes, I use them occasionally, but I would rather use my own proprietary photos if I could. So, this site gives you a blend of both! Clearly, I don't know the person looking at their phone, but they are looking at what I choose! There's a couple of examples in my show notes at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au if you want to see what it is I'm raving about here! Go check it out and have a think of how you could use these images in your marketing. It's not free – there's an annual subscription or you pay per image. I think pricing is something like $7 each or $14 per month annually if you pay for 12 months up front. If you can see value in it – like I certainly can, then it just could be worth the $170 odd bucks for the year. As always guys my discoveries are just that and I am in no way affiliated with any of them but promise to tell you if I ever am. 5 REASONS TO CREATE A FACEBOOK GROUP Like I said before, you're probably in an enormous amount of Facebook groups, heck I'll probably in some and don't even know it because just a wee bit ago you could invite your Facebook friends into your group and then they're in until they hop out themselves. Just a heads up that that rule has now changed, and you can't do that anymore – you can still invite them but now they have to accept. So, the tactic of building numbers quickly just got harder or perhaps in my opinion better! So why Facebook groups. Well here's my 5 reasons why: - Zuckerberg himself even said outright that people want to hear more from family, friends, and groups, and that was precisely what they were going to give users in 2018. And they clearly have. His actual Facebook post about it, if your interested, is in my show notes. I've always had the theory with social media that we should follow the bouncing ball. So many times, when they (as in the Facebook or Instagram or LinkedIn etc) have brought out a new feature, I used it and encouraged the people in my world to use it too. If there's one thing I know for sure it's that these social media companies don't do anything for without a reason and if they'd like to give me more algorithm because I'm using their new feature, then I'm happy to oblige! So, if groups are what they'd like us to do, then groups is where we should head to. The second thing Zuk, as we'll call him, has been quoted as saying more recently, is that the goal for Facebook groups is to have 1 billion people in them – not 1 billion groups, but 1 billion people in groups. Currently there are about 250 million people in groups – so it's got some growing to do to reach the goal. For us, as business owners, that means Facebook will be putting more emphasis on groups and therefore, you could assume, more algorithm. Another reason why you should be both in groups and creating a group for your business (we'll get to that soon). The third reason why Facebook groups are the way of the

S1 Ep 16EPISODE 16 – HOW TO CREATE A SOCIAL MEDIA CALENDAR
Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 16 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Have you joined my Facebook Group I'm building called Like Minded Business Owners – I'd love you to join – just search Like Minded Business Owners on Facebook! I know we all belong to lots of groups on Facebook so I've been pondering what I can do that's different – so, again, I am making the commitment to go, at least once a week to help YOU my listen and those in my world with their biggest challenges or those burning marketing and social media questions. I'm going to go live every Thursday. So if you'd like to connect and get social on social – head over and join my group. I would LOVE you to come over and say HI! Maybe leave me a question your grappling with and I'll answer it live for you! So, have you ever finished work after a REALLY long day, only to realise that tomorrow is your workplace anniversary – a massive marketing opportunity and you've got ZIP organised for your social media channels? A mad scramble ensues to come up with a clever concept, create the necessary bits like video or quote cards or write a blog, and execute in time to ride the wave of birthday fun. Or in some cases, it may be too late to do anything at all – an awesome opportunity missed. There is an alternative! And that's what we are going to talk about today! But first, of course, our discovery of the week. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! This week's discovery is the emoji keyboard! Yep, emojis – I think they are taking over the world! But they are also helping us put more personality into our emails, into our social captions and into our blogs etc. Branding is so much about personality and tone and so forth – and emojis allow us to show a little more of ourselves then we used to be able to in the written form. Now I work on a windows-based system. Do for those in Mac land, you might need to experiment, apologises up front for you guys. But for those of us who don't have a Mac to bring up the emoji keyboard you press the windows key (the one that has the windows symbol on it) and the full stop key together and an emoji keyboard will come up! 👍 Does that excite you must a wee bit? If it does there's every chance, we are spirit animals!! I love emojis, my friends might say a little too much, but I love for business too! In episode 2 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast, our discovery is an emoji builder – you can literally build your own so if you're interested in that head back to Ep 2 to get the details on that. Emojis are a great way to stop the scroll, or the thumbs as my teenager put it the other day, either on social or in people inboxes – both of which are busy little places! I hope you can find a use for an emoji keyboard in your marketing! As always and a little obvious with this one, my discoveries are just that and I am in no way affiliated with any of them but promise to tell you if I ever am. HOW TO CREATE A SOCIAL MEDIA CALENDAR So, what's the alternative to the mad scramble or the having nothing at all and missing marketing opportunities? The social media content calendar. Ta-Dah! What is a content calendar? It's exactly as it sounds! Somewhere to plan and organise content for all your social media platforms. Sounds like a tiny miracle doesn't it? Let's dive into why you should have a social media content calendar for your business and how to create one. Don't worry, I have a template for you to work with, but more on that soon. WHY A SOCIAL MEDIA CALENDAR IS SO IMPORTANT FOR YOUR BUSINESS If you are planning to produce more content for your social channels or just get more consistent, then it's important that you have the support you need. There's many reasons why a social media content calendar is important for business, starting with: You'll never miss important dates Taking time to put all the key dates for your business in a content calendar allows you to plan content for those dates (a) so, you don't end up scrambling at the last minute and (b) so, you can plan campaigns and lead times for events, campaigns and important dates. If you're ever stuck for content when it comes to dates, there's a fabulous website www.daysoftheyear.com – apparently there's a day set aside for practically everything! You'll have organised content I know, I know. Obvious, right? But you'd be surprised – despite this very clear benefit, many businesses fail to use a content calendar! Being organised means you know what you're publishing, including where and when, and it also provides key insights into where your gaps are too. Don't underestimate the impact this kind of planning can have on the effic

S1 Ep 15EPISODE 15 – 7 SURE-FIRE WAYS TO ACCELERATE THE GROWTH OF YOUR BUSINESS
Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 15 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. So, onto day's episode. Most business owners I know want to grow their business. Some to big heights some to lower heights – everyone's goals and expectations for their business is different to the next. But regardless of how big you want to get, today I have some 7 tips on how you can accelerate the growth of your business. I just know that you'll get some great ideas from listening in. But first, of course, our discovery of the week. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! This week's discovery is an app that's on my phone and I am falling in love with it more and more – I just know we are going to be best friends very soon – it's called Unfold. Unfold is a toolkit for storytellers. Create beautiful and engaging stories from minimal and elegant templates. Available now for iOS and Android. The app is free although does have more templates if you are willing to put some dollars in – as with all apps these days. Although it's built for Instagram Stories – it does so stories for other platforms as well. If you're not into stories, then I'm sorry but frankly you need to be. They are were the eyes are at at the moment. With the insane number of something like 400 million daily active users you cannot not be there! Perhaps head back to Episode 7 of this podcast where I talk about INSTAGRAM STORIES – THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE SENSATIONAL! The link is in my show notes at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au or just check back on the app you are listening in on now! If you are into stories, then you are also going to love this app. Give it a try and maybe tag me in your story when you use it – I'd love to see them! My tag is @smallbusinessmadesimple Hey and if you have a little discovery, or something you use in your business that you'd like to share, please do so. Email me at [email protected] or tag me @smallbusinessmadesimple. I really love to know what tools you use to help make your life simpler! 7 SURE-FIRE WAYS TO ACCELERATE THE GROWTH OF YOUR BUSINESS Ok, 7 sure fire ways to accelerate the growth of your business – let's do this. Whether you want massive growth or just to reach that goal so you can have more freedom from your business – these tips are bound to make your think, stretch and maybe even just reinforce what you already know! Find a Mentor Every small business owner is on a journey, the only difference is how far along the track they've travelled. Finding a mentor who is further down the track and who has already faced and broken through the challenges you are confronting is one of the most effective ways to accelerate your progress. Finding a mentor can mean paying one, like clients pay me, or it can mean simply following someone on social media and signing up for all their freebies and getting all you can from them – maybe it's someone in your world like a friend who's just a little ahead of where you want to be and you can shout them wine or coffee in exchange for wisdom. My beautiful friend Vicki, shout out to Victoria Joy, and I were having a conversation the other week and she was saying how a podcast she was listening too recommended that people my age (I'm 44) and above even have a Millennial as a mentor! I haven't stopped thinking about that since! My tip here is don't have too many mentors. I found one – very early on. I've paid enormous money to my mentor over the past 10 years, but every single cent has been well spent. Everything was a lesson – the good, the bad and the darn right ugly at times too. But I wouldn't change it, any of it, for the world. It's got me here and I like it here! So, choose 1 or 2 people you trust and are aligned with your values and vision and follow them, listen to them. Too many opinions from too many people will not accelerate your growth but more than likely inhibit it! Just keep that in mind. Find your tribe. Learn to Market your Talent You may not know this, but you already have all the talent you need to succeed. I see this all the time, people thinking they need to get the next degree, the next certificate, the next qualification and THEN the money will come in. No, it won't. You ARE talented enough right now. Need to hear that again – come closer to the microphone – YOU ARE TALENTED EN

S1 Ep 14EPISODE 14 – HOW TO GET FREE PR FOR YOUR BUSINESS
EPISODE 14 – HOW TO GET FREE PR FOR YOUR BUSINESS Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 14 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Now my business philosophy is that business is simple but it's definitely NOT EASY – and there's a massive distinction which I know I don't need to tell any of you about! And a lot of it is about consistency and commitment. For those of you who follow me on social or listened to Episode 1 of this podcast will know that at the end of 2018 I committed to doing 52 of these – 1 a week for 52 weeks. So far so good! But now I'm putting it up a notch. I have a great little Facebook Group I'm building called Like Minded Business Owners – I'd love you to join – just search Like Minded Business Owners on Facebook! But onto today's episode. Today I've got a special guest. Her name is Jules Brooke and she is coming along to talk to us about how you can get FREE PR for your business. PR stands for press release – so basically Jules is going to tell us how we can get in newspapers, online blogs, or even on TV! I 100% guarantee you it's not as hard as you think. I write for a couple of magazines each quarter and I got those gigs simply by reaching out to them a little while ago – now they just keep coming back and back for more! Big, small, micro, medium – whatever, FREE PR is a fabulous way to not only build your audience, your customer or client base, but also to set yourself up as the expertise in your industry – whatever that is. Jules has some really practical tips and tricks so if you haven't done much PR in your business or haven't tried it as a marketing strategy – then listen up – you will be inspired to do so! But first, of course, our Discovery of the Week. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! This week's discovery has come just in time for me this week! As mentioned just before, I have a guest coming on to chat today. So, I needed a transcript for my Show Notes – which incidentally you can get a www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au Normally I use www.rev.com they will transcribe your videos for you and then allow you to have captions on your video – which is becoming more and more important – just saying! Rev costs about a $1 a minute – pretty good really and a fabulous service. But that's not my discovery. Today I used www.otter.ai to do my transcription. It's FREE so I thought I'd give it ago so I could recommend it to you all. It was super easy – I just uploaded my audio file and it didn't too long at all to transcribe. About 2 or 3 minutes (but my NBN was playing up a little!). Was it as good as Rev.? No, it wasn't. I certainly had to go through and correct some words and phrases and it did take a little time to make corrections. Would I use it again – absolutely – but probably on shorter videos – like ones for social media rather than for my Podcast. So, if you need some video transcription – go to www.otter.ai or www.rev.com and have a look. Transcription of video and audio are becoming more than more important in our digital marketing lives. So well worth a look at both! HOW TO GET FREE PR IN YOUR BUSINESS Just before I bring Jules on – I wanted to tell you a little about her. I have known Jules personally for about 3 or 4 years now and I can tell you, hand on heart, she is probably one of the most passionate people I have ever met about their business. I love Jules because I think she's a little like me – go hard or go home. Be 100% on something or don't bother. She's a real go getter. Jules founded HYOPR in 2008 after the GFC made funds even tighter for already cash-strapped small businesses. Having run her own small business and specialised in small-business PR for many years, Jules had seen the power of PR to transform and grow businesses first hand. She also knew that many small businesses had incredible stories to tell, that the media is desperate for new content all the time and that PR is a process that can be taught. With this knowledge, Jules has set out to empower small businesses to manage their own PR. I know you're going to love this episode with Jules – so let's get into it. Jenn Donovan So, thanks, Jules, thanks so much for joining us on the podcast today. For those out there who don't know you, can you tell us a little bit about Jules Brooks and what handle your own PR is all about? Jules Brooke I sure can. Okay, so I, I basically fell into PR myself in about 2003 when I had a little baby and I got a job from someone, which was to do with PR, and I didn't have a clue how to do it. But I really needed the work.

S1 Ep 13EPISODE 13 – THE RULE OF THE 3 E'S OF SOCIAL MEDIA POSTING
EPISODE 13 – THE RULE OF THE 3 E'S OF SOCIAL MEDIA POSTING Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 13 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. So, it's episode 13 and that a little important. You see I started this podcast in the 1st week of January – so that means it's week 13 of 2019 which also means, hold onto your seats, we are a quarter of the way through 2019. Yep a quarter of the way through. Now some of you are probably tempted to switch me off here – how dare I say that, don't I know you didn't need to hear that, and yep you're right you probably don't need to hear it, but I really think you do! If you're still procrastinating over things on our to-do list, your wish list for 2019, then today's the day you start, today is the day you dust off your 2019 goals – see what you should be doing and just start! I started my year reading the book "Girl, Wash Your Face" by Rachel Hollis – I highly recommend it to all your ladies listening. But one sentence in the whole book has stuck in my mind. She wrote "Your life is supposed to be a journey from one unique place to another; it's not supposed to be a merry-go-round that brings you back to the same spot over and over again". I'd loved that. So if you feel like if you don't change now, in week 13, that in week 52 of 2019 you might just be exactly where you started in Week 1 of 2019 – then hop off that merry-go-round and start implementing the dreams, goals and start doing the stuff you said you'd do. When I speak to audiences, one of their goals is often to get better at social media – get more consistent with social media and yet they find it hard to get started. One of their biggest questions is almost always – WHAT DO I POST? It's a real roadblock for many of you – so today I'm going to tell you about a little rule I tell everyone in all my social media workshops - the 3 E's Rule of posting on social media and give you examples of the 3 E's Rule in practice. But first, of course, our Discovery of the Week. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! We all know that video is king right and that we should DEFINITELY be using more video in our business – me included don't worry about that! But sometimes it's the software or the hardware or the tools that brings us unstuck – puts that roadblock up or that wall we find so hard to get past. Well today's discovery might go a little way to unblocking that roadblock for you. https://www.useloom.com/ Loom is a free piece of software which allows you to capture your computer screen and do short videos – in a nutshell. Very much like how I use Snag It but this one's FREE! Use it to do team announcements if you have one, walkthrough a product demo for your clients, as an onboarding for new team members or new clients to your world (hint, this is a brilliant way to make new people in your world feel loved and cherished and welcomed!), give feedback and answer your clients burning questions, the uses are endless. Not to mention it will save you hours of typing time! It will build deeper relationships with your team and people in your world, and it can help build your brand and expertise quicker because people are getting to know you! Getting value, literally straight from your mouth! As with most offerings these days on the web, Loom has a free version, or a paid version and the paid version is only $10 per month – but FREE is perfectly awesome to start with! So have a go! If you're got to send an email to a client today, try sending a video to them instead and see what the response is – I promise you it'll be positive! Your clients and prospects will LOVE that you've taken time to address them personally in a short video! Hey and if you have a little discovery, or something you use in your business that you'd like to share, please do so. Email me at [email protected] or tag me @smallbusinessmadesimple. I really love to know what tools you use to help make your life simpler! THE RULE OF THE 3 E'S FOR POSTING ON SOCIAL In the next few minutes I am going to give you some excellent examples and ideas of what you can post on social media but if you'd like EVEN more – then grab a copy of my eBook 108 Social Media Content Creation Ideas – yep there's 108 of them! Simple go to www.108social.com.au and get it there. Everyone that I speak to in my workshops I talk about the 3 E's of social. The 3 things every post you do on social media should fall under. Everything you post on social media should be either Entertaining your audience Engaging them with value, or Education them If your posts aren't doing one of those 3 then you need to ask yourself what's the value in the post for your audience? Remembering it's not about you – it's about them! ENTERTAINING YOUR AUDIENCE So, let's go with number 1 – Entertaining your audience – what can you be posting that would be entertaining your audience. Entertaining is probably the most fun of the 3 E's Rule. I always talk about how YOU (the business owner) should be showing up more on social – peop

S1 Ep 12EPISODE 12 – 3 REASONS WHY YOU'RE NOT CONVERTING MORE SALES
EPISODE 12 – 3 REASONS WHY YOU'RE NOT CONVERTING MORE SALES Hey hey welcome! Welcome to episode 12 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Thank you for joining me again for this episode. I talk a lot about marketing and social media so this week I'd thought I'd go next level and talk sales. Everyone talks sales and marketing but in fact it should be marketing and sales. Without good marketing to get them in the door or to your website or on your social following – there's no chance of a sale. So, first lesson of the day is marketing goes first! But once we market, we need to sell! So that's todays topic. I am going to share with you 3 reasons why you're not converting more sales. But before that, of course, let's get into this week's discovery. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! This week's discovery is actually a discovery for me. And it's going to change my life! You see, I'm a fast-paced person. I like everything to be as fast as it can. So therefore, when I listen to Podcasts, I listen to them at 1.5 speed – never 2 x speed because my brain can't work that fast! The Podcast might go for an hour – but I can't spare that time, so I listen to it faster! There's actually studies to say that our brain takes in information quicker if it's delivered quicker! But anyway, that's not the discover! The discovery is a chrome extension I've found called – Video Speed Controller https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/video-speed-controller/nffaoalbilbmmfgbnbgppjihopabppdk?hl=en The link is in the show notes at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au So basically, it means that any video I watch in Google Chrome I can make go faster! That's life changing for me! So, if you love watching video, learning from video or just laughing at videos on the world wide web, then you can do it quicker with this chrome extension. Or if you'd like to do it slower, you can do that too! The extension allows you to speed up and slow down videos. I hope it changes your life like mine! 3 REASONS WHY YOU'RE NOT CONVERTING MORE SALES Hands up those who LOVE sales? Hands up those who think they couldn't sell a heater to an Eskimo? Love them or hate them, if we're in business, we in the business of sales. Sales does have a bad rap, we still think of say anything, promise anything door to door salespeople when we say the word sales. But the reality is we buy from people we like. Sales is all about the know, like and trust factors. David Penglase, my hero when it comes to sales, taught me what I know – shout out to David, talks all about the art and science of building customer trust and what it really means to give value. So, we need to change our mindset of what it means to sell. Today I'm going to give you 3 reasons why I think you're not converting more business into sales. They'll be hints, tricks and little tough love along the way. So, let's get into it! Negative Self-Talk First one, negative self-talk. This is a biggie – so let's start here! Few things will diminish your sales results more than negative self-talk. If you walk around telling yourself you're no good at sales, that you're not a natural sales person (whatever that is), then you have doomed yourself before you even start. If marketing is the heart of your business, then sales is the oxygen. No sales equals no business. If you have a negative image of what selling is or must be, then being able to sell will be almost impossible for you. One great way to eliminate negative self-talk is to re-frame what sales is and is not. It is NOT about trying to convince people to buy or justifying your price or comparing yourself to your competitors! The first step is to remember selling is not about you, it's about your prospect. You are there to serve them, not sell to them. Shift from a selling mindset to a serving mindset and you will be a long way towards eliminating the negative self-talk of I'm not a salesperson! Doubting Your Product If you harbour any doubts about the value, quality or benefit of your products or services, then it's likely your sales results will suffer. How about your team if you have one? Do they believe in your products or services? The quality, the value? If you or your team doesn't believe in the product you sell, my advice is simple – stop selling it and go and find a product or service that you do believe in. By its very nature, if you persist in selling something you know is inferior, then you are wilfully and deliberately deceiving your customers and damaging your own integrity in the process. Life is too short to spend time selling products you don't believe in. Without doubt the greatest myth in the world of sales is the idea that great sales people have the gift of the GAB! The truth is great sales people don't talk, they listen. Customers or clients don't want to be convinced, manipulated or talked into buying. They want to be heard, understood and respected. You are not there to convince ANYONE of ANYTHING. Good selling, or no pressure selling, is a process o

S1 Ep 11EPISODE 11 – RUNNING A COMPETITION ON SOCIAL MEDIA (& BEYOND).
Show Notes EPISODE 11 – RUNNING A COMPETITION ON SOCIAL MEDIA (& BEYOND). Hey hey welcome! Welcome to episode legs 11 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Thank you for joining me again for this episode. This week's topic is a bit timely in that I am having discussions with clients and prospects almost daily at the moment on this topic! Facebook Competitions! At the time of recording this, it's coming up to Easter and who doesn't want to win Easter eggs! But every time I talk about the rules and regulations of running competitions on social media, almost everyone wants to argue with me and say, "but everyone else does it….". To which I sound exactly like my Mum, shout out to Ida, "if everyone jumped off a bridge would you …" – oh that's such a mum thing to say isn't it! But people don't know the rules and loads and loads of you break them especially when running a Facebook competition. Facebook is very open and clear about their rules and we all ticked that box when we signed up to say we would follow them, but we don't! Mainly because we don't know them! So today we are going deep with online competitions (with some offline thrown in for good measure!). But first, our discovery of the week. THIS WEEK'S DISCOVERY! If you've ever need to read a script for a video, a Facebook or Insta live or piece of audio like this, then you might have wished for a teleprompter. A teleprompter is of course the thing you use to put your script into and read it like the news people do on TV. But a good teleprompter is hard to find and a good FREE one even harder! This week's discovery is the best teleprompter I have found and it's FREE! And oh, so simple to use too! You can find it (but you need to use your Chrome browser) at https://teleprompt.me/ - the link is in the show notes of course. Why do I love this one more than the others, because it will darken the words as you've said them! No kidding! Just make sure you allow it to connect to your computer's microphone. To use it simply cut and paste your script into the box in the top right-hand corner, press tab (to make it go onto the big screen) choose your colour and your font size – make sure it's connected to the computer's microphone – and start speaking. It will go the speed you speak! For those of you who listened into Episode 6 with Jemimah Ashleigh where we were speaking about live video and how most people have a script – well for recorded videos this teleprompter will be your saving grace! It's awesome. It's free and it's this week's discovery of the week! Enjoy. Remember, if you have a discovery, you'd like me to share with everyone, please tag me on social using my handle @smallbusinessmadesimple – I'd love to hear about it! RUNNING A COMPETITION ON SOCIAL MEDIA (& BEYOND) So, into this week's topic – running competitions on social media! Now, straight off the bat I want to qualify this episode, having spent many years in law, I can't continue without qualifying the information in this episode. Firstly, we all know that the social media can change overnight yes? So as much as the information in this podcast is current at the time of recording, March 2019, and most of it is general information, whenever I talk about the rules of Facebook or Instagram competitions or your local state laws, I highly encourage you to check out my show notes at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au and go to the links I mention below for Facebook and Instagram rules. Because the rules might change after recording this, but the links won't! So, before you go running a competition based on the rules I talk about in this episode, please check them out and make sure they haven't changed again! Ok, now that's done. I feel better now, I'd hate for you to do something you thought was within the rules and the rules have changed and it's not any longer … Link to Facebook rules and regulations: https://www.facebook.com/business/news/page-promotions-terms Link to Instagram rules and regulations: https://help.instagram.com/179379842258600 So, let's get in to how to run a super freaking good competition on social. Step 1: Start with the end in mind Your first step is figuring out why you want to run it – what's the end goal or my favourite saying, "start with the end in mind". If you can start with the end in mind, all the planning will be much easier, simpler and smoother, that I guarantee! So, decide what's the goal for the competition. Is it too: Increase Facebook page likes Increase Instagram followers Reward customers/clients Create brand awareness Boost low sales Collect user generated content Get feedback or conduct research Increase page engagement Step 2: Decide on the type of competition Once you have the goal in mind, you know exactly what you want from the competition, the next step is the type of competition you'd like to run. Competitions are run all the time on social media, you've probably entered loads yourself. So have a think, which ones engaged you, which ones have worked r
