My guest is Lauren Kress, The Business Scientists and her business is the Change Makers Collective. The Change makers collective is a science-led growth consultancy business, with Lauren at the helm. At the time of this recording Lauren and I had spent a lot of time (virtual time) together. We'd been on a TV program together; I'd been live on her LinkedIn and now she's on my podcast – so we'd had loads of great conversations over the past week. Her approach to marketing is awesome and a little unique – at least the way she sees it. It's interesting how marketing has these core principles that every marketer talks about, but they put their own spin on things – Lauren's spin – science. Her perspective creates curiosity – one of the best personal traits of any successful business owner. I could've talked to her ALL day and I mean all day! Show notes are at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/74 www.facebook.com/groups/LikeMindedBusinessOwners Unless you live a Facebook free life, you probably would've come across something in the past week talking about the "BIG" announcement from Mark Zuckerberg, here in after called Zuk, about Facebook Shops that are coming and are going to revolutionise our spending lives … So, I thought I would dedicate this podcast to helping you understand a little more about what the announcement means for you and perhaps your business – that may or may not already have a website that you sell through. So first up, I have to say that this has been coming … this announcement was percussed by previous press releases where Facebook has clearly stated it intended, over the next decade, to provide us with the tools we needed and the commerce we wanted. Zuk spruiked this little announcement with FREE mentioned several times. This will be a FREE platform, you can have a shop for FREE, and more free and more free. But, if you dig just a little deeper, you will have seen that it's not FREE as such. Yes, free to have one, yes free to list your 10 or 100 products, but when you sell a product, it becomes not free. Prices were written a commission of 5% on purchases over $8, and for those under $8, a flat fee of 40 cents. It's pay per performance. BUT, it's unclear whether that's just if they "check out" on the Facebook platform – which incidentally will only be rolled out in the US to start with. So, to use Facebook Shops in Aus. land, you would still need another check out option – such as your Shopify or WooCommerce. I'm not sure how they could charge a fee, when you don't use their check out … but we'll see! HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT TO FACEBOOK SHOPS THAT IS AVAILABLE NOW? The biggest difference will come to us in Aus. Land soon, but for those in the US, the biggest difference will be the ability to shop on the platform without leaving the platform. You will be able to browse, shop and check out all on the Facebook or Instagram platform. The more time people spend on the platforms the more money they can make from ads – it's the perfect storm! Other differences with Facebook Shop now vs this announcement will be the analytics, insights and reporting data that will go with it. You'll be able to see the behaviour of your shoppers on this platform and market accordingly, just like I hope you do with your google analytics, if you have an online store now. By enlarge the biggest difference will be the weight they put behind them. At the moment you are pretty much directing traffic to your Facebook Shop (and you might be listening to this and thinking, there's already a shop on Facebook I can use)! – and yep, there is – but it's not that common to be honest – because there's not much in it for you. But the announcement talked about having shops shown in the Instagram explore page, the algorithm will be suggesting your products to people who it thinks will be most likely to buy (because remember the more sales you make on their platform, the more money they make in transactions fees, and the more ads they can sell to other businesses). Apparently they'll be a shop tab that will be used to "search" for what you are looking for and all this will be sewn up in a little bow inside your commerce manager – the back end of your Facebook. Let's have a look at some pros and cons of this announcement – besides it not really being free as heavily marketed … IT'S FOR SHIPPING PRODUCTS ONLY As far as I can find out and see, it appears that this announcement is not really different to what's offered now as far as shoppable tags and Facebook Shop goes, in so far as it needs to be a tangible product. People, things, ideas, thoughts – just love listening, observing and analysing – not in a bad way – but in a "always learning" way. I'm the first to admit, I'm a lifelong learner. Also reading (*ahem listening) to a good book, mostly business related, sometimes not, a podcast or reading articles, blogs etc. So now I've set the scene, I wanted to share with you 3 things I learnt from a single LinkedIn post I did other day. I'm sharing this with you because there's lessons in what I learnt – lessons for me and perhaps for you. Some are "eye-rolling" "yes, I've heard that before Jenn" lessons – but I'm going to tell you anyway – because as the saying goes, when the student is ready, the teacher appears. I know that's true from experience, from hearing the same thing over and over and over again, but finally hearing it for the first time with "that" mindset – and it being a game changer. So, off track I go …. 3 things I learnt from a single LinkedIn post. Firstly, let me tell you why, this particular post is what I want to tell you about. It was by far my most popular recent post – not the best ever, but the best in Covid-19 with over 3000 views, 50 comments and many likes and reactions. I did it on a whim – not really thinking too much about what I was putting up there – just thought it was a good question to ask and I thought perhaps I might get one or two potential guests from the responses for my podcast! So, the post read "If someone were to interview you, what topic would it be about?" So, what did I learn from that post: People's favourite subjects is themselves That's not meant to be a derogatory thing, it's just a reality. Ask people what they do, and they will tell you. Ask people what they are best at, and they will tell you. Lesson: If you're short on engagement or content, think about how you can ask a question to engage people by asking someone about them – again, everyone's favourite subject is themselves. Some don't know the answer. Some people who commented did not know what they could be interviewed about. This is a professional platform, LinkedIn, and therefore about business doing business with business. Some people didn't know what their elevator pitch was. An elevator pitch is being able to tell someone what you do, why you do it and who you do it for, in the time taken to ride an elevator. Very scientific timeline! It's totally fine that people don't know their elevator pitch – I so get that – and I'm not looking at it from that perspective – I looking at it from a content perspective – perhaps I need to put out some content to help people articulate what their interview topic/elevator pitch is. See marketing hat on – there's content right there for me in the future – listening to what the market is telling me. But if you couldn't answer that question – or you have 100 different answers to that question – what would your topic be – then perhaps your USP or unique selling proposition is something you need to do some work on.
