S1 Ep 1010. Tools and essential for a from scratch kitchen

To cook real food daily, you're going to need a few key items. In this episode I talk about my top ten kitchen essentials for a traditional foods kitchen. Y'all know I am a lover of real food. Give me all the fresh herbs, grass-fed beef, fermented veggies and raw dairy. The quartz countertops in this old farmhouse kitchen never look complete without a bubbly bowl of sourdough, a day old mason jar of milk with the whey separating, and veggies fermenting in the corner. Some of the tasks of a traditional foods kitchen can sound daunting, but with the right routine and the right tools they just become second nature. Today I want to share those tools, that make these tasks flow smoothly, here in our home. These essentials are work horses, that perform many different functions. They are durable and long lasting. I try desperately to avoid the unitasker in my kitchen. I like pieces that make my life easier, and are made with materials that will stand the test of time. S1 Ep 88. How I meal plan- from scratch food the easy way!

Learn my 5 tips for having healthy meals every night without meal planning. Making 3 meals a day does not have to be complicated. In fact, it is super simple! I've noticed that when people want to start cooking from scratch, they think they need elaborate meal plans with dry erase boards neatly filled in with three meals a day. Baked blueberry pecan oatmeal for breakfast, Asian pesto curry for lunch and almond crusted parmesan tilapia for dinner... (I just made those titles up, by the way, but they really do all sound fabulous.) Just do a quick Pinterest search for "Paleo Recipes" and prepare to be overwhelmed. I love a good crispy coconut chicken with squash and parmesan fritters as much as the next person, but maybe for a Saturday night special dinner, or a night when I have a little extra time to spend in the kitchen... Which is pretty much never. I am a mom of six small kids! If you think you need to make Paleo safe coconut tortillas for every meal, that plan isn't something sustainable . No wonder people limit their healthy eating attempts to 30 days. Eating real food can feel so overwhelming when we hold ourselves to these standards! What ever happened to good old fashioned meat, vegetables and herbs? Back when my grandma was a mother of young children, I imagine she cooked a whole chicken, baked potatoes and maybe served it all with a biscuit and canned jam. No fancy recipes. Just real food. S1 Ep 55. Cast iron in the kitchen- I could never live without it!

Cast iron has been my skillet of choice for many years now. There are only two things that get better with age in the kitchen. One is cast iron and the other is homemade sourdough starter! WHY CAST IRON IS BETTER THAN NONSTICK Reason #1, of course, is it doesn’t have all the bad stuff. Nonstick pans are coated with a carcinogenic chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid. Not only does it leech into the food when cooked at high temperatures, but also produces toxic fumes in the air. Not to be overly dramatic, but you need to get that stuff out of your house ASAP. Although the health concerns with nonstick was what drew me to using cast iron in the first place, the ease and beauty with which they cook kept me coming back for more. A perfectly fried egg, potatoes so crispy you can hear the crunch, a carmelized sear on a roast to seal in all those delicious juices…I mean, if you aren’t cooking with cast iron is it even cooking? Give me that 20 pound skillet that gets better with use every. single. time. If I go on vacation, and the condo has a flimsy nonstick and a plastic spatula, I cook like I have one hand. Totally handicap. Cast iron’s where its at, my friends. S1 Ep 22. Ten years in the making- the renovation story of our last farmhouse

Sometimes in this world of Instagram, Youtube and HGTV it might seem like everyone else is pulling off massive renovation projects in just a few months' time. Endless budgets (or unrealistic more likely) and several contractors make it all happen. The renovation story of our last farmhouse might be a little more relatable. We bought it for a super cheap price, lived with the ugly (other than a little paint) for several years until we paid it off. After that we used a modest budget to slowly finish the project. Our cheap little fixer upper was eventually featured in Do it Yourself Magazine and Flea Market Style! The blog posts I referenced in this episode can be found here: How we paid off our house in less than 5 years (before photos are in this post)- https://www.farmhouseonboone.com/how-we-paid-off-our-house-in-less-than-5-years Front porch makeover- https://www.farmhouseonboone.com/lowes-curb-appeal-makeover-farmhouse-porch-reveal Guest bathroom makeover- https://www.farmhouseonboone.com/modern-farmhouse-style-bathroom-makeover-reveal Master bathroom makeover- https://www.farmhouseonboone.com/farmhouse-bathroom-remodel-reveal DIY island makeover- https://www.farmhouseonboone.com/rustic-farmhouse-style-kitchen-island-makeover-diy Kitchen renovation- https://www.farmhouseonboone.com/new-lights-from-lamps-plus Full farmhouse tour video that I took right before we sold it- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnuQtTalhBI
