Album Review Crew Episode 30 "Use Your Illusion II"

E

On the 30th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1991 album "Use Your Illusion II" by Guns N' Roses. This was GNR's 4th studio album and was released simultaneously with Use Your Illusion I on September 17, 1991. This was a monumental moment in rock history as both albums shot straight to the top of charts. Use Your Illusion II debuted at Number 1 on the US Charts and would eventually go 7x Platinum. Fans of GNR crowded record stores to buy the most anticipated album releases in years. Use Your Illusion II boasted songs that were familiar to their fans, like Civil War, You Could Be Mine and Knockin' On Heaven's Door. The band had made some changes as well, adding keyboard player, Dizzy Reed to make it a 6 man unit and substituting Steven Adler (drugs) with Matt Sorum. The album was a purposeful departure from their landmark debut, Appetite For Destruction. Songs became longer, more thought out lyrics and themes were explored in their songwriting, especially by Axl Rose. The album still boasted Slash's amazing guitar work which was a highlight on this album. Songs were also sung by Izzy & Duff as well. All the bandmates contributed songs and lyrics, which gave the album a great variety of music styles and influences. This was Zeus' pick and he and Tom described how this album impacted Freshman year at Stonehill College for them both. Guns N' Roses is also the first band to have a second album on ARC, with the guys having reviewed Appetite For Destruction on the first episode of The Album Review Crew. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the cover against the previous 28 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. It might take you 14 years to get through this episode, but don't cry because when you hear where someone ranks this album you will want them to Get In The Ring!!! PUNK! This historic album was the first metal album to debut at number #1 on the Billboard 200 on the Neilson SoundScan era. The dual guitar attack of Dave "Snake" Sabo & Scotti Hill & main songwriter/bassist Rachel Bolan and drummer, Rob Affuso. The music incorporated some punk, thrash and metal influences and more serious, gritty and political lyrics as well. This was Shout It Out Loudcast's first ever Patreon Pick, which means the exclusive members of SIOL's Patreon family selected this album. The boys breakdown and dissect the tracks, and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the cover against the previous 25 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew Episodes. S4 Ep 157Episode 157 "Love Gun"

E

This week Tom & Zeus open their 4th season by reviewing the 1977 classic KISS album, Love Gun! This was KISS' 6th studio album and maybe the peak of their career. KISS was just named the most popular band in America in a Gallup Poll, beating out The Eagles, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith. The album was shipped platinum and was KISS' first album to reach the top 5 on Billboard 200, reaching number 4. The legendary album cover was painted by Ken Kelly who had painted the album cover for Destroyer. There was also the infamous cardboard cutout LOVE GUN included in the packaging. The band continued their winning formula with Eddie Kramer, who produced this album. KISS also received co-producer credit for the first time. This platinum album was the first album to feature all 4 members of the band handle lead vocal duties, when Ace Frehley sang his signature song, Shock Me. The opening riff of I Stole Your Love, the legendary opening piano/keyboard of Christine Sixteen and the title track, Love Gun which Paul Stanley called "quintessential KISS" and many of the KISS Army's favorite deep cuts make this album review one of a kind. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always they then rank the album and the album cover against the previous KISS studio albums reviewed. Newly formed Led Zeppelin led by Guitar God Jimmy Page, bassist extraordinaire John Paul Jones, the ultimate frontman Robert Plant and the greatest rock drummer of all time, John Bonham released their debut album on January 12, 1969 and never looked back. From the opening of Good Times Bad Times. to one of their signature songs Dazed And Confused, to the heavy metal original Communication Breakdown, "Led Zeppelin I" was groundbreaking. S3 Ep 150Episode 150 "Music From "The Elder""

E

This week Tom & Zeus review the polarizing 1981 concept album by KISS, "Music From "The Elder,"" on their special 150th episode. This is the 9th studio album from KISS and the 15th studio album reviewed by SIOL. Peter Criss is out and Eric Carr is in. Kiss is joined by producer Bob Ezrin, who produced their breakthrough studio album "Destroyer" and was fresh off producing Pink Floyd's "The Wall." Instead of releasing a hard rocking album to rejuvenate their slumping career, Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley, along with producer Bob Ezrin decide to release a concept album based on a story by Gene, called "The Elder." The album was a disaster commercially and critically. The band had a few promotional appearances, but for the first time in their 8 year career, they did not tour to support the album. However, over time the album has cemented itself with bona fide cult status. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and the album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. See if Tom or Zeus or both or neither think this is rightly judged as a major misfire and a complete dumpster fire. See if someone thinks people are crazy for not seeing its brilliance! S3 Ep 1025Album Review Crew Episode 25 "Down To Earth"

E

On the 25th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1979 album by Rainbow, "Down To Earth." With Ronnie James Dio out of Rainbow, Guitar God, Ritchie Blackmore brings in Graham Bonnet to handle the vocals on this, his one and only album with Rainbow. The band also brought in old friend, Roger Glover from Deep Purple to produce the album, however Roger ends up writing the lyrics and joining the band as its new bassist. ARC favorite, Don Airey joins as well as the keyboard player. The sole remaining Rainbow member on the album was legendary drummer, Cozy Powell. This forgotten Rainbow album was sandwiched between three Dio led Rainbow albums and three Joe Lynn Turner led Rainbow albums. The album seemed to stray away from the familiar Rainbow sound and lyrics into a more commercial sound, especially with its two singles, All Night Long and their biggest hit, Since You Been Gone. This was Zeus' pick and as usual the guys breakdown the tracks and rank the songs. The boys then rank the album and album cover against the previous 23 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew Episodes. The band is made up of former members of the Babys, lead singer and pop star, John Waite, bassist, Ricky Phillips and keyboard/songwriter Jonathan Cain, along with guitar sensation Neal Schon, were members of Journey. Rounding out the band was future Journey drummer, Deen Castronovo. The band burst onto the scene with 3 Top 40 hits including the number #1 smash, "When I See You Smile." The band relied on a combination of Waite's smooth silky vocals, Cain's song writing and Schon's superb guitar playing. Castronovo and Phillips were more than capable as well. The album was released at perhaps the height of the "hair metal" explosion and went platinum. This was Sonny's pick and as usual the guys breakdown the tracks and rank the songs. The boys then rank the album and album cover against the previous 22 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew Episodes. So Don't Walk Away, grab your horrendous wig, fix your teeth and rock your keytar because Tough Time Don't Last....this podcast does! E

This week Tom & Zeus review the April 10, 2014 Rolling Stone cover story about KISS. After all these years KISS finally made the cover of the Rolling Stone. The issue came out around the time of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame drama. Written by Brian Hiatt, the article is a snapshot of the band at perhaps its most turbulent time period. The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction became a sore spot for the original members and insults, allegations and hostility was prevalent. The author talks with each member at length and a fascinating portrait of each original member is revealed. Tom & Zeus breakdown the article and discuss all the drama and the hilarious stories. So don't fall down the stairs laughing, but if you do, don't worry your probably wont remember ... at least not for 40 minutes. This week Tom & Zeus review the January 15, 1982 KISS appearance on the ABC T.V. Show Fridays. The band had released their concept album, Music From The Elder on November 10, 1981 and this is one of their only promotional appearances for the album. Since KISS did not tour for the Music From The Elder, for many fans this was the first time to see the band with a new member, Eric Carr's the Fox and also the new haircuts and costumes. The band performed three songs live from Music From The Elder, The Oath, World Without Heroes & I. The live performances of these seldom played songs are an extreme rarity. S3 Ep 139Episode 139 "Revenge"

E

This week Tom & Zeus review the 1992 legendary non makeup KISS album, Revenge. It's album review time and this is the14th KISS studio album (including the 1978 solo albums) reviewed so far. This Gold album is the first to feature Eric Singer, who joined the band after tragic loss of KISS fan favorite, Eric Carr. The album is dedicated to beloved drummer. This is the beginning of the "Revenge Era" KISS, where the "Demon" is back! A focused Gene Simmons along with Paul Stanley in his prime, Bruce Kulick now comfortably and confidently at his best and a hungry Eric Singer, a non makeup KISS, is perhaps at its peak. Gone is the bright glam look and sound and now replaced with dark, black leather and heavier music. The band released 5 singles and videos including fan favorite Unholy, which is the first single and video to feature Gene Simmons as the lead vocalist since I Love It Loud. Revenge also boasts the return of two KISS legends, producer extraordinaire, Bob Ezrin and the talented and never dull, guitar whiz, Vinnie Vincent. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and the album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed.
