Ep 158What is an Almond Mom?

E

A term made famous by Yolanda Hadid, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star and mother to supermodels Bella and Gigi Hadid, “Almond Mom” refers to the type of mother who sets their child up to be obsessed with food and their bodies in ways that are both toxic and harmful. In this, the second episode of our Body Image series, we explore generational trauma in the context of diet culture, and take a deeper look at the wounds passed down from our grandmothers, to our mothers and in turn - to us. Many millennials feel very passionately that they want to be the ones to break this cycle, that we don’t want our kids to watch us starting a new diet every Monday, or never wearing a swimming costume or eating a biscuit without first apologising for it, and as relatively new mothers ourselves, this is something we feel deeply passionate about. Thanks so much to our amazing guests who feature on this episode: Phillippa Diedrichs, Molly Forbes, Beth and Bev. Molly’s books Every Body and Body Happy Kids are available now - get your copies here! You can find The Body Happy Organisation’s free resources here: https://www.bodyhappyorg.com/start-here Read more about Phillippa’s work at https://www.phillippadiedrichs.com/  Follow @mollyjforbes on Instagram Follow @bodyhappyorg on Instagram Follow @phillippa.diedrichs on Instagram If you would like to get in touch - you can email us on [email protected]  Hosted on Acast. How to feel better about our bodies... with Professor Phillippa Diedrichs

bonusE

Phillippa Diedrichs is a Professor of Psychology and body image and mental health expert. She works at the Centre for Appearance Research and has spent the last 20 years studying body confidence - what influences how we think and feel about how we look and what we can do as a society to create an environment where we can accept and love our bodies. She also works with brands and organisations within the beauty and fitness industries to help them think about what they put out into the world, and how they can be part of the solution to help create a world that is accepting of bodies of all sizes. This series grew so much bigger than we ever expected it to be thanks to the amazing insights our guests gave us - so we decided to release some of those expert conversations in their entirely. Each Thursday, you will hear an in depth conversation which will drill down into different themes which we will explore across the eight weeks of this series. This is the first of those conversations and we hope you love it. Follow @phillippa.diedrichs on InstagramRead more about Phillippa’s work at https://www.phillippadiedrichs.com/ If you would like to get in touch - you can email us on [email protected] us on Instagram:@shouldideletethat@em_clarkson@alexlight_ldnShould I Delete That is produced by Faye LawrenceMusic: Dex RoyStudio Manager: Dex RoyTrailers: Sophie RichardsonVideo Editor: Celia GomezSocial Media Manager: Emma-Kirsty FraserArtwork: Alex Andrew Hosted on Acast. Ep 157The Shocking History of Diet Culture

E

New year, new me? Welcome to our expansive eight-part series deconstructing our relationships with body image. From the historical origins of diet culture, to the present day where injectable weight loss drugs are available from high street pharmacies, Alex and Em will strip back our assumptions about diet culture and body image, to find out how we got here, and how we can find a healthy way to look forward. By speaking to a range of experts, from dieticians to fitness influencers - we’ll explore the damaging effects of tabloid media and weight loss TV shows, we will examine the phenomenon of the ‘Almond Mom’ and we will uncover diet culture’s ‘wellness’ rebrand - to equip our listeners with the knowledge and practical steps to navigate a world where diet culture lurks around every corner. Today - we’re starting off by taking a look at the origins of diet culture, because to really get a sense of the magnitude of diet culture and the effects that it has had on our lives, we need to go back to its roots. So, in this episode, we’re going back in time to the advent of diet culture, in the hope it helps us figure out how these debilitating body issues that burden so many women have come to be – and why… Is it all innate? Do we have a biological predisposition to desiring to be thin? Let’s dig in.If you want to dig further into diet culture, self-acceptance and making peace with your body - Alex’s book You Are Not A Before Picture is available now. Ep 154‘I did wrong and I’m sorry’: Love Island star Faye Winter

E

Faye Winter appeared on Love Island in 2021 and when she left the villa she was faced with a lot of noise and a lot of criticism. In this episode, Faye chats candidly about seeing herself in a different light, admitting she was wrong, and how she apologised and is working towards becoming a better person. Faye tells us about her desire to live a normal life after appearing on the show - but how some people can perceive that as a failure, and how the choices that influencers make are dictated and driven by their audience engagement. We also have a candid chat about Faye’s experience with filler - and how it is unregulated in the UK. Faye shares a horror story about botox and explains why she’s so vocal about the topic now. Thanks so much to Hinge for sponsoring this episode. The dating app, which is designed to be deleted, inspires daters to take it slow this holiday season and reflect on the learnings from the past year. Ep 150I’m a Just Stop Oil activist - for my children’s future

E

Have you ever heard a non-confrontational confrontation with a Just Stop Oil activist? Today we’re speaking to Gill Tavner. She’s a Just Stop Oil campaigner - but perhaps doesn’t fit the image that the media might paint you of one. Gill was one of the warmest and most lovely people that we’ve spoken to on the podcast. She also has a criminal conviction - for walking in the road as part of a Just Stop Oil slow march. She tells us how her activism was inspired by increasing desperation and anger about her daughters’ futures and she explains in simple, accessible and clear terms what Just Stop Oil is demanding - and it might not be as extreme as you think. We know that climate anxiety is a real thing - and we know sometimes it can be easy to avoid difficult conversations about climate change. But Gill makes the conversation digestible and understandable - and she might just make you want to take action. You can read about Just Stop Oil’s campaign to end fossil fuels by 2030 here - https://juststopoil.org/ Follow @just.stopoil on InstagramFollow @gilltavner on XEmail us on [email protected] us on Instagram:@shouldideletethat@em_clarkson@alexlight_ldnShould I Delete That? is produced by Faye Lawrence Music by Alex Andrew Hosted on Acast. Is It Just Me: Reflecting on the week’s internet noise

bonusE

It's been a very big week on the internet - so we're bringing you a topical episode to reflect on three topics that have felt particularly important for us. Firstly - take a look at the internet's reaction to the tragic news of Liam Payne's death. The noise on the internet around this topic has felt extraordinarily loud this week - so we discuss the cycle of trolling and tragedy that we have seen play out so many times and how we're feeling about it. Then, it's time to go back in time because the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is back. Have we just taken a massive step back in terms of our collective relationship with body image, or is this a reinvention that was desperately needed? And talking about society's obsession with thinness - we also chat about the government's conversation about Ozempic as a tool to get people back into the workforce. In the new year, we will be releasing a series on the podcast dissecting our relationship with body image. Ep 146The only person that was going to find my cancer was me... with The Titty Gritty

E

Six years ago, Helen Addis (aka The Titty Gritty) found a lump. Despite having no history of cancer in her family - it was an aggressive form of breast cancer. A week after her diagnosis - she had a masectomy, followed by 18 months of active treatment. Being well under the screening age, the only person who would have found Helen’s cancer - was Helen. During her treatment, Helen asked her friends and family if they checked their boobs - and when most of them said no - she made it her mission to spread awareness about checking your breasts. So, she launched the Change+Check campaign - it is a simple sticker which goes on shop and gym changing room mirrors reminding people to check themselves for signs of breast cancer. She also almost got the queen with a pair of boobs on a Royal Mail stamp…This Breast Cancer Awareness month - Helen is part of a campign to make a life-extending drug called ENHERTU available in England, Wales and Northen Ireland. Despite petitions, protests, campaigns and even government pressure the secondary breast cancer community is being met with constant rejection. Ep 143Life as a Woman in the British Army

TW: sexual assault, rape, suicideThis week on the podcast, Em and Alex are joined by Gemma Morgan. When Gemma joined the Army, she discovered very quickly how she had to behave as a woman to get by: prove your strength by pushing yourself harder than you ever thought possible, but ensure you act small enough so you don't step on the toes of your male counterparts. This balancing act proved near impossible under the weight of oppressive misogyny deeply entrenched within the structure of the British Armed Forces, where razors were supplied for men to shape their facial hair while sanitary products for her and others that needed them weren't even a consideration. Gemma's Army career didn't go to plan, with trauma, abuse and PTSD all featuring in her story. She explains how she went from outstanding soldier to suffering a near-fatal mental health crisis, and why she is now demanding change. Gemma found help and hope, and wants to show others that they can too.If you have been affected by any topics in this episode, or you want to talk to someone, you can call the Samaritans free, anytime, at 116 123If you are a member of the Armed Forces community and you need help, you can call Help For Heroes weekdays 9-5 on 0300 303 9888 you can also submit a form anytime at https://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/application/You can buy Gemma's book, Pink Camouflage, here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pink-Camouflage-soldiers-resilience-leadership/dp/1804251232Follow us on Instagram @shouldideletethatEmail us at [email protected] by Daisy GrantMusic by Alex Andrew Hosted on Acast. Ep 138Why is the World so Tough on Mothers?

This week, Em and Alex are joined by founder of Motherkind, Zoe Blaskey! After a rollercoaster of an email from a listener last week, the girls were feeling a bit deflated. It was beginning to feel like there wasn't enough space to be open about the realities of motherhood, and that it wasn't clear to listeners how happy they were despite finding things hard. This is where Zoe came in to clear things up. Zoe is on a mission to help mothers shift from guilt, exhaustion and comparison to confidence and empowerment. She explains why a mother's instinct isn't innate, what matrescence is and why you shouldn't tell mothers that they will get back to their "old self". This enlightening conversation is for mothers, future mothers, those questioning whether they want to be mothers and those who have decided against parenthood all together!Follow Zoe @zoeblaskey on InstagramBuy Zoe's new book Motherkind here: https://beacons.ai/zoeblaskeyVote for us in the British Podcast Awards Listener's Choice category here: https://www.britishpodcastawards.com/votingFollow us on Instagram @shouldideletethatEmail us at [email protected] by Daisy GrantMusic by Alex Andrew Hosted on Acast. Ep 135The Mixed Race Experience with Nicole Ocran and Emma Slade Edmondson

This week on the podcast, Em and Alex are joined by the hosts of the Mixed Up podcast, Emma Slade Edmondson and Nicole Ocran! Nicole and Emma met back in 2018 and when they started chatting, they realised they had something in common that they hadn't spoken about in depth with even their family before: being mixed-race. After jokingly suggesting that their discussion should be a podcast, they launched the critically acclaimed Mixed Up podcast and have now written a book called The Half of It. In this episode, they discuss the ways in which being mixed-race is misunderstood, why many mixed-race people feel as though they can't comment on race issues, and why no one really discussed identity when they were younger. They also chat about privilege, the complex history of mixed-race people and the stereotypes that are pushed upon them.Follow Emma on Instagram @emsladedmondson, Nicole @nicoleocran and the Mixed Up podcast @mixedup.podcastListen to Mixed Up and order Emma and Nicole's book The Half of It here: https://msha.ke/mixedupFollow us on Instagram @shouldideletethatEmail us at [email protected] by Daisy GrantMusic by Alex Andrew Hosted on Acast.
