It intends to guide maritime stakeholders to control and mitigate these risks and put them in a better position to make informed decisions about achieving and maintaining smarter and carbon-neutral shipping. During the pandemic, we have seen a crew change crises. Seafarers have not been able to travel between the ships that constitute their workplace and their country of residence due to travel restrictions. High-level meetings have been taking place, aiming to get seafarers designated as "key-workers", which would lead to exemption from specific COVID-related travel restrictions and make it possible for the 200,000 stranded seafarers to become repatriated. Here is a link to IMOs Q and As about the crew change crises. Currently, the next step towards normality is vaccination. The key-workers status would move seafarers up the line in the queue. The next step after that is how to prove vaccination and clearance for Covid-19 through a negative test. One suggestion is a Digital Health Pass, and that is what this episode is addressing. Meet Anthony Day, working at IBM in Dublin, who focuses on digital health pass and how complicated it can be to get national health authorities to agree on a global standard. Anthony describes how a digital health pass would make the certification easy to show on a mobile device when travelling or entering a sports arena. He explains blockchain technology and gives us insights into the various considerations that have to be considered. We are in a pandemic and need to be persistent and patient, but we also have to start adjusting to the new reality that will emerge when the time of isolation is over, and that is what I wanted to talk to you about today. It's changing the format - it's a solo episode by Lena Gothberg about being a podcast producer in the maritime industry. I speak about why I started the Shipping Podcast almost 5 years ago and what I have learned during the journey. It's so important that we as an industry take it seriously how we can compete about the best talent out there and the only way forward is a joint project aiming at raising the profile of the maritime industry. Meet Mayte Medina, Chair of the IMO HTW Sub-committee, (Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping) representing the US Coast Guard at IMO. Mayte was born and raised in Panama and dreamt of becoming a Panama Canal Pilot as a little girl. She ended up working for the Panama Administration for 7 years after she graduated from Kings Point and sailed for a couple of years. Mayte has been working in the development and implementation of domestic and international maritime safety, security and environmental protection standards since 1990.

Fran has a dual license and has trained to become both a Master Mariner and a Chief Engineer, however, the life on the Bridge seems to interest her more. In episode 125 you meet Elda Kazara Belja, Lecturer and Admissions Officer at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute, IMLI IMLI's overall mission is to help build the legal capacity among IMO member states, particularly developing states, to fulfil their obligations under the IMO treaties. This interview was made June 25th, at the IMO in London and the next day IMLI was celebrating its 30th anniversary which Elda talks about in the episode. It's impressive that more than 1000 students from 146 states and territories have pursued studies at IMLI in Malta but if Elda is the first person they meet upon arrival, I am sure they all want to stay and experience her positivism and passion. In episode 124 you meet the Project Manager for the Functional Review at the International Maritime Organization, Mads Svendsen, and can hear him describe how he has worked with 20 different UN organisations before arriving at the IMO almost a year ago. The first 6 months Mads spent to try and understand the culture and find out where the organisation want to go before launching a series of workshops and then move on to the strategy. It's an exciting project and the end goal is a goal-based organisation. I found it very interesting to chat with Mads, I hope you feel the same. We talk a lot about the SDG 5 in this episode and the gender diversity programme that Patrik helped introduce into RCC and why he thinks it's so important. He also explains what change he can see after the introduction and how they went from 5 % women at the Bridge of Celebrity Cruises to 20 %, in only a year. Meet Birgitte Ringstad Vartdal, CEO of Golden Ocean Management AS in Oslo. Birgitte is one of the #WomeninShipping that is more often interviewed by the trade press than others, that comes with the task of being the CEO of a listed company. In spite of that, Birgitte doesn't see herself as a role model even though she understands that others do that. What is a scrubber? How does it work? Heidi Johannessen Paulsrud from Wärtsilä explains the basics around environmental footprint from the ship, for me. The technology has been there for quite some time but since there has not been any incentive to use it it's only now that the item has surfaced to the top of the agenda in the maritime industry. Heidi is a chemist, so she explains what happens if we are not reducing the SoX and NoX in the exhaust gas from ships. She also speaks about fuel, current and future, and what the shipowners of the world need to think about to reach zero-emission. Heidi is happy to see more females in the maritime industry and she herself is a good representative for the modern maritime industry. Heidi Johannessen Paulsrud is the 56th female guest, which makes gender diversity in the Shipping Podcast 47.4%. The goal is 50%/50% so not quite reached yet, but I am working on it. In episode 117 we meet Michael Kjellberg, Owner of Swedish Orient Line, SOL and he shares glimpses from a long and successful career and all about Gothenburg Chartering, Imperial Shipping, Swedish Orient Line and now Wallenius SOL, the "new kid on the block", the newly formed Swedish ship owning company, servicing the forest industry. Michael started his shipping career by going to sea on CARMEN, a car carrier, some 50 years ago, but found out that he was more interested in shipbroking and chartering, so he went ashore again. Now, the circle is closing as he is the sole owner of the Swedish Orient Line, which is now forming this joint venture with Wallenius Lines. When asked about his success, he shares that secret is to only hire who are smarter than yourself and build a loyal team to share both challenges and successes.
