Dr. Thusi's research examines racial and sexual hierarchies as they relate to policing, race, gender, and sexual behavior. Her articles and essays have been published or are forthcoming in the Harvard Law Review, NYU Law Review, Northwestern Law Review, Georgetown Law Journal, Cornell Law Review Online, and Utah Law Review. Her first book, Policing Bodies: Law, Sex Work, and Desire in Johannesburg is forthcoming with Stanford University Press. Thusi earned a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in New York, and Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and Law & Society from University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Thusi's research is inextricably connected to her previous legal experience at organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union, Human Rights Watch, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and—most recently—The Opportunity Agenda, a social justice communication lab that collaborates to effect lasting policy and culture change. Emily Lazar is a creative force who has achieved success in various artistic outlets. She is a multi- disciplinary artist fronting the rock band September Mourning which is based on a comic book series that she created and is published through Image/ Top Cow Comics. She designed the costuming and fashion of the world which she brings to life on stage… and has also recently extended the storyline through music/ animation/ art/ storytelling NFT's she released which are now sold out on Open Sea. She made history as being the first female metal/ rock musician to mint and sell an NFT online. The music tells an epic tale of "heartbreak, loss, pain, joy, love, redemption, but most of all, courage…" while the comic books chronicle the first two chapters of her story. September Mourning revives the concept of rock star meets superhero. If Marilyn Manson and X-Men's Storm had a kid, it would be September Mourning, who also cites influences as varied as Rob Zombie, Disturbed, and Muse. "For me, the project is a story, a theatrical art piece," Lazar explains. "Music is the backbone, but for this to work, it has to include the imagery and the narrative all symbiotically linked into the live performance, videos, art, nft's etc. Music taps into your innermost being. There's something very intimate and personal about it." The character of September Mourning is a human-reaper hybrid, who feels the need to give some human souls a second chance, and thus starts an epic battle between the living and the dead. To expound on this narrative, Lazar created, wrote and published the graphic novel (four books in one) entitled "September Mourning: The Complete Collection" through Image/ Top Cow Comics in partnership with iconic comic book artist Marc Silvestri, who is working on Batman comics and is owner of Top Cow Productions (Witchblade, The Darkness). and partner in Image Comics.Together, they pulled together the story of September Mourning in graphic form, to accompany, and enhance the musical message. Having performed at large festivals like Rock on the Range and Download Festival and shared the stage with acts like Rob Zombie, Slipknot and Five Finger Death Punch among others, September Mourning has already built up an impressive fan base, which she calls her "Children of Fate," constantly encouraging them to have "the courage to embrace their passion… to allow yourself to follow your heart and not be a slave to your fears. To know that the only boundaries that exist in our lives are the ones we allow." Lazar's creative talents extend into visual art/ modeling, as well. Micaela Hicks, also known in the VO community as Micaela Stepanovich, has been slaying the VO dragon since 2001. Building a myriad of relationships with talent and producers alike. Beginning as a receptionist at SBV in October of 2000, she quickly knew she had an ear for voiceover as she easily recognized voices of the talent and producers who would call. Micaela built the commercial, animation, and video game departments at Solid Talent. She is able to understand and pivot with the constant changes of the entertainment industry. After Solid, Micaela spent a year and a half at Atlas Talent before joining VOX. Micaela was born in El Paso, Texas and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was on the Junior Olympic Ski Team and competed in countless ski races around the state of New Mexico. She has lived in Los Angeles for 19 years. A dedicated yoga practitioner, photographer Robert Sturman has increasingly focused on capturing the timeless grace and embodied mindfulness of asana in his work. His portraits, whether set in the lively streets of Manhattan, the expansive beaches and canyons of Malibu, the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the timeless elegance of Walden's New England, or the bleakness of San Quentin Prison, remind us that there is beauty everywhere. His stunning repertoire runs the gamut from yogis perched on rocks surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, to African orphans practicing yoga in Kenya, to breast cancer survivors, bare-chested and scarred. In addition, Sturman has worked extensively photographing war veterans who have embraced the practice of yoga to heal PTSD, in an effort to help change the heartbreaking statistics of veteran suicides each day. In Sturman's own words, "I often think of Rumi's words 'I can't stop pointing to the beauty.' That feels right to me." Sturman's honors include Official Artist of the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, 2010 FIFA World Cup Artist Representing America, and Official Artist 2008 United States Olympics. Sturman has been the subject of two separate New York Times articles celebrating his photographs of yoga from around the world. Tom Dozier, M.S. Behavior Analysis is the basic science of human behavior. A part of this science involves human reflexes and how we acquire them. Misophonia appears to be a conditioned (acquired) reflex to the trigger sounds. Tom developed Relaxation and Counterconditioning Therapy (RCT) as a treatment for misophonia. This includes muscle relaxation training and the Neural Repatterning Technique based on the concept of counterconditioning of reflexes. Using the Trigger Tamer app or real-life experiences, it can slowly reduce the misophonic reflex. This process actually changes the neurology associated with the misophonic reaction. Tom is also the author of seven peer-reviewed journal articles on misophonia and the book, Understanding and Overcoming Misophonia, 2nd Edition, A Conditioned Aversive Reflex Disorder. Tom received a Master's of Science from California State University, Stanislaus in 2012 in an interdisciplinary program titled, "Behavior Analysis and the Family." His primary career focus is on parenting and parenting skills (see 3LParenting.com, guaranteedpt.com, or LDSParentCoach.org). Tom became interested in misophonia in 2012 because he worked with parents of children with misophonia. He recognized that the misophonic reaction to trigger sounds was an involuntary reflex behavior. As such, misophonia triggers should respond similarly to other acquired reflexes. Tom saw an opportunity to help individuals suffering with a condition that had no known cure or treatment. Based on the research in acquired reflexes and relevant published journal articles, Tom developed a new misophonia treatment method and has applied this method successfully to individuals, primarily using telehealth video-chat. When the treatment conditions are right, individuals experience a great decrease in the reactions to trigger sounds or even have no reaction (cured) for that trigger. Tom's first career was as a manufacturing engineer. He began his career in parent training in 2003 because of the help he received from Dr. Glenn I. Latham on parenting concerns. Tom received a graduate certificate in applied behavior analysis in 2004. He received a certification of board-certified assistant behavior analyst in 2008. He received his MS in Behavior Analysis from CSU Stanislaus in 2012 and received a certification of board-certified behavior analyst that same year. In 2017 Tom was awarded the Behavior Analyst Mastery Certification: Behavioral Consultation and Clinical Behavior Therapy (BAMC: BCCBT) by the Board of Behavior Analyst Specialties. Nicky Scorpio is a seeker and storyteller with quite a story to tell. Nicky grew up in a very unique environment. Being raised in an LGBTQ+ home and being taught about acceptance, social justice, and looking for the good in everyone, it was a shock stepping outside and seeing a very different world. On top of seeing drugs, violence, and prejudice, at a young age, Nicky learned about death, losing his father to AIDS, divorce, and what it's like to feel like an outsider. It would be in high school where he experienced bullying from the wealthy kids and learned not everyone was accepting of his upbringing that led Nicky to fall into depression. His unique perspective allowed him to see the best in everyone and to utilize his voice and perspective as a storyteller to share and promote healing. Nicky soon learned all of these events and traumatic experiences would help him see the goodness in people and encourage others to celebrate being unique. Nicky's goal with music and art is to remove titles that divide people and to create conversations and art that promotes love, ethics, morals, and values for everyone. Nicky believes that everyone should have a seat at the table and should have a fair chance to know how powerful they are naturally. Nicky is also a part of the collective The Sophisticated Psychos which is focused on mental health. Shane Salk is an award-winning audio producer. Shane co-created and produced the first audio drama of its kind to be distributed by Internet podcasting: a weekly adventure series performed with a full cast, sound effects, and music. "We're Alive: A Story of Survival" launched in May 2009, to date it has over 200 million downloads. Salk is recognized and quoted in "The Radio Drama Handbook" (2011), a textbook and report of an academic research study. Salk's audio drama adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol was released simultaneously in English and Spanish, by Blackstone Audio on CD and by download. Produced and sound designed by Salk, it stars Maurice LaMarche, Rob Paulson (Emmy Award-winning voice actors), Neil Flynn, Robbie Rist, Ruben Garfias, and Alex Fernandez, just to name a few. It received the Parents' Choice Award for Story Telling in 2012. Salk's other credits as a producer, director, and sound designer of audio productions range from a sitcom series on LA Talk Radio to a fantasy/action pilot starring Emmy Award winner Michael Emerson (Lost, Person of Interest), to original short stories and pilot episodes for children's shows, serial action/adventure, mystery and comedy shows. In the video realm, Salk has produced short films and a web video series that has appeared in several festivals around the country. The psychological artist journey, Carlos Luna James is a designer and a multimedia artist whose practice ranges from art direction, animation, and motion graphics design for marketing of movies and television shows to the creation of one-of-a-kind sculptural installations. Born in 1979 in Ciudad Juarez, a wild and history-rich border town, Carlos later moved to Guadalajara, to pursue a degree in Design at one of Mexico's most prestigious universities in that field, the Jesuit College (ITESO). While in school, he co-created a print magazine dedicated to designers, illustrators, and artists. Within two years, they were already publishing in Vancouver, Barcelona, and Mexico. In 2007, having set an ambitious goal of becoming an independent artist and having his own studio, Carlos moved to Los Angeles. After working as a graphic designer for a few years, he joined FOX Studios as a digital art director, focusing on the development and creative implementation of innovative strategies in digital design, animation, and motion graphics to deliver premium content through storytelling. Carlos worked with companies such as FOX, Universal, Disney, DreamWorks, Paramount, Sony, Relativity, TNT, and TBS among others. Throughout the years, Carlos has continued working on developing his distinctive artistic style, mainly influenced by sci-fi, comic books, urban art, and technology. Geometric shapes and patterns along with bright acid colors of his characters could be categorized as Pop Folk, clearly bringing forth the essence of his Mexican heritage. As an African American woman and the daughter of a Greek immigrant, Vlahakis-Hanks has made environmental and social justice a cornerstone of ECOS's mission. She actively promotes a corporate culture of diversity and empowerment, ensuring that over 50% of her C-Suite and top executives are women. She supports a green economy by creating sustainable manufacturing jobs across the U.S. and offering strong employee benefits and a living minimum wage of $17 per hour, one of the highest in the industry. She also offers financial incentives to employees who make sustainable living choices such as purchasing a low-emissions vehicle or solar panels. Vlahakis-Hanks received her undergraduate degree at UCLA and an MBA at Chapman University Argyros School of Business and Economics. Jaquair Gillette is an actor, spoken word poet, and artivist. Living a life and career in the arts & entertainment industry and social justice area. Gillette continues to work on social justice issues as one of the co-founders & committee members of the Greenacre Community Gardens/urban farm in his hometown of Paterson. Gillette is a three-time featured poet at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café. Jaquair has performed in poetry cafes and houses across the US from New York City to Los Angeles. Michelle Klassen ("MK") Merrigan began her career in humanitarian aid, working frequently in the developing world. For the past decade, MK led the development of advanced energy solutions that meet the mission of US military, security, and peacekeeping forces operating beyond secure supply lines. Opening up new markets with creative capital, this work quickly led to border security in support of national security interests; economic development efforts through small business models at the last kilometer; and in developing regions and markets. Beholden to the idea that if Detroit could put a car in every driveway, we could also provide power as an economic enabler, in every region of the world. MK led a diverse team from a small prototype shop in Ferndale, Michigan. This team is responsible for some of the energy industry's most incredible firsts, including the first off-grid solar microgrid of its size providing 24/7 power to a Haitian village, in Les Anglais, Haiti, as well as the first off-grid environmental monitoring system for use by a major American power utility, in the California desert.
