S1 Ep 167Simon Shields - Monash Investors | Reporting Season

What is reporting season and how do analysts and fund managers find the numbers to run the tape measure over a company? Australian listed companies share their financial reports twice a year, generally in February (half yearly), and the full year in August. They come out and talk about the results for the half or the full year with a presentation, and generally an outlook statement and that's reporting season. We have it in a six monthly period in Australia. Simon Shields is the Portfolio Manager and co-founder of Monash Investors. We spoke about his approach to reporting season, his style of investing and the ETM that his company runs, MAAT. You can find out more about Monash Investors at this link. Here's a link to the blog post and transcript: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/monashShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. S1 Ep 166QUICK TIP - What's an index and why is it important to look behind ETFs?

Just as you study a company before you buy it’s shares, you need to study ETFs and what they are comprised of before diving in. Simon Karaban is a Senior Vice President at SGX Singapore Exchange where he works creating indexes. Most passive ETFs are based on an index and Simon has plenty of insights behind the scenes. In this Quick Tip Simon warns about some ETFs that are designed only to attract investors. They may not have the best returns or they may not even be comprised of the kind of companies that you would expect in the description. It’s about looking under the hood to see the engine that’s driving the ETF. Is it going to provide the returns that you expect, and is it truly investing in what you think it’s investing in?Here's a link to the episode that this Quic Tip came from: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/karabanShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. S1 Ep 165Steve Symington - 7investing | Companies of the future v old time business

From the birth of disco (it was 1953!), capital raising, the tortoise and the hare, businesses blessed by bountiful accounting principles and the banking of the future. Steve covers a lot of ground in this episode. I've had this interview on the shelf since May, but it is still relevant in terms of the decline of technology stocks. I think it's also good to hear from US investors. As we know the ASX is 2% of world markets so it's always worth learning a little more about Wall Street. Steve Symington is a lead advisor for 7investing. He covers a wide variety of industries and publicly traded companies, but loves finding disruptive, responsible businesses chasing massive addressable markets. You can often find him lurking on Twitter. Companies discussed in this episode: SoFi Technologies & Markel - NasdaqGS:SOFI, NYSE:MKLShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. S1 Ep 162Zarmeen Pavri & Jeremy Liddle - SDGx Ventures Climate Tech Fund

What are the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and how can investing help to achieve them? What's the difference between ESG & Impact Investing? What we do as investors matters. Across the different asset classes, we find a spectrum of impact – from negative to positive – that needs to be addressed. The solutions are not clear-cut. We live in a complex world, and while it’s easy to blame oil, gas and animal farming for a majority of the emissions, if we were to stop drilling for oil, using gas and herding cattle today, our civilization would collapse tomorrow. A significant amount of people would starve or freeze to death within days. This is why decarbonization require a system-wide transformation. Financial markets have the unique opportunity to drive this transformation and start a phase shift. Capital is the enabler for innovation and prosperity. By leveraging the right strategies transformational impact can be created that serves the planet, people and profits.Jeremy Liddle and Zarmeen Pavri work in the Venture Capital space and run SDGx Ventures Climate Tech Fund. All the underlying investments address the many issues of climate change.Find out more at the blog post: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/sdgxShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. Simon Shields is the Portfolio Manager and co-founder of Monash Investors. We spoke about his approach to investing, an overview of the recent reporting season, the difference between focussing on absolute and relative returns and the early warning triggers they use to reduce exposure to companies in their fund that may be facing challenges to their share price. You can find out more about Monash Investors at this link: https://monashinvestors.com/Before co-founding Monash, Simon spent 25 years as an analyst, portfolio manager and head of equities for large fund management businesses. Unusually for a professional fund manager, he was fortunate to move between firms that had widely differing investment styles of growth, value and DCF approaches. Monash has taken advantage of this experience to create an agnostic approach to investing that focusses on absolute instead of relative returns.Sharesight is the best portfolio tracking tool in the known universe - and they are pleased to extend a SPECIAL OFFER to listeners of this podcast: Save 4 months on an annual premium plan! Click here and sign up now for a 7 day free trial. Or go to https://www.sharesight.com/stocksforbeginners Disclosure: The links provided are affiliate links. S1 Ep 140Introducing ETFs for Beginners

I’d like to introduce you to a new podcast called ETFs for Beginners. My co-host is Ana Kresina. She’s much better on Instagram than me and you can follow us there by going to @etfsforbeginners. ETFs deserve their own podcast. They can represent a different style of investing altogether, or they can be part of portfolio that includes both individual shares and ETFs. Either way there’s a lot to talk about. I’m also enjoying working with Ana who is a devotee of long term boring compounding investing. She also doesn’t break Instagram the way I would. https://play.acast.com/s/etfs-for-beginnersWe are excited to be publishing our first episode with an actual guest! Jessica Leung from Betashares. In this episode Jessica explains how one of the best ways to start out with ETFs is with a broad market cap weighted index. So you're essentially getting the market, the whole of the ASX 200. She also explained why she decided to create content on social media, to raise awareness of financial literacy. Who better to speak in this space than a person actually managing an ETF themselves. You can find her in Instagram and TikTok via @theleungwayHere's a link to a recent article from Jessica about the ESG revolution: https://www.betashares.com.au/insights/the-esg-revolution/Jessica is a member of the portfolio management team at BetaShares. Prior to joining BetaShares, Jessica worked within the Systematic Equities Portfolio Management team at Macquarie Investment Management. The second half was strong, as expected, with revenue up 19% despite a currency headwind. The Enterprise division, selling direct to large corporations, continues to shine, with second half revenues increasing 35% and important new business wins that should be recurring in nature. The ITAD division, which sells erasure licences to equipment recyclers, did better than we should expect longer term, with a surge of end-of-life hardware processing occurring post COVID. The mobile phone recycling division didn’t inspire, generating revenues the same as the prior year, but it should benefit significantly from the return to normal life.” Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time.
