S1 Ep 211Dr Lili Sussman - Wisr Today | Money and our Minds
Have you ever found yourself worrying about money despite earning a decent salary? You're not alone. In fact, nearly half of Australians report feeling stressed about their finances. It's hard to change and people think that it requires deprivation, an iron will and a spreadsheet. Lily Sussman is the chief Strategy Officer at Wisr and a driving force behind the Wisr Today app. She believes that bad habits are formed over time, and not all of them serve us well. Ordering takeaway when we're tired, or shopping when we're bored can add up to significant amounts of money over the course of a year. Lili believes that to change our habits, we need to work with our brain's natural design.Blog post available at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/wisrPortfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. S1 Ep 210Simon Ree - The Tao of Trading
Simon Ree is the author of The Tao Of Trading: How To Build Abundant Wealth In Any Market Condition. But why does the world need another book on options trading? There are already hundreds of them out there. Simon thought that all of the ones that he'd read were boring. The sorts of book you'd only read if your boss was making you do it. He thinks that sometimes the authors like to show off how good they are at complex math and difficult concepts. He tried to write a book on options trading that was simple, engaging and fun to read.Blog post available at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/taooftradingSpecial landing page for listeners of this podcast: https://www.taooftrading.com/sfbSimon can also be found on Twitter at https://twitter.com/simon_reePlease consider a small donation if you'd like to support my work educating and entertaining new investors in the stock market. S1 Ep 207Jodi Pettersen - Arrivederci 2022
Recorded before Christmas but released as the first episode of the New Year, Jodi Pettersen has been a friend of the podcast from the early days. She's off to start a new life in Italy and we sat down to chat with no particular agenda. She used to work at eInvest which has now been folded back into the parent firm.We spoke about the size of the institutional world of money, how I did the wrong financial course but now know more about insurance than I ever thought possible, why women whisper about money and how to help drummers with their dosh. Also about the rapidly diminishing number of financial advisors in Australia. There's a lot of work that goes into launching an ETF, and it's not as simple as it may seem to the average investor. From an operations perspective, ETFs can be complex and require a lot of behind-the-scenes work to ensure everything runs smoothly. It's the job of those in the financial industry to make the process of investing in an ETF seem effortless and easy for investors, even though there is a lot of complexity involved. Just like a ballet dancer makes their performance look effortless and precise, those in the financial industry strive to make the process of investing seem simple. However, this can be a double-edged sword, as it may give the impression to some that investing is too easy or straightforward. Please consider a small donation if you'd like to support my work educating and entertaining new investors in the stock market. S1 Ep 203Sarah King - Stockspot | Looking after the financial needs of your parents
Recently, my mother’s financial adviser retired. His clients were transferred to another advice firm. This meant that and my brother and I were presented with an updated Statement of Advice. Before I started doing this podcast I had no idea about what a document like this covered. For most ordinary people it’s a classic case of Too Long Did Not Read. Most people’s eyes glaze over and they sign the document based on trusting the adviser. But having a little bit of knowledge (which can be a dangerous thing), I devoured the Statement of Advice. I learnt some interesting stuff. In this episode I’m joined by Sarah King from Stockspot to discuss this process and how adult children can make sure that their parents are basically getting the best possible deal Sarah works in ADVICE AND CLIENT CARE at Stockspot. She has over 13 years experience in the financial services sector working in financial advisory, operations and administrative roles.Blog post available at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/stockspot-sarah Shares for Beginners is for information and educational purposes only. S1 Ep 196Craig Mercer - Dalton Investments | Return on Equity is an Onion
I've been thinking a lot lately about how little I know about the metrics that investors use to value companies. We had a look at the P/E Ratio a few weeks ago. This week Craig Mercer joined me again to discuss Return on Equity or ROE. But like all the best metrics, they become more complicated the more you dig into them. The warning for beginners is to not take a metric on face value. Craig Mercer is the Chief Research Officer and Head of ESG at Dalton Investments (Australia). S1 Ep 194David Maurice Sharp - Investing Creatively
There's an old cliché about the "starving" artist that may have a basis in reality, but isn’t set in stone! My guest David Maurice Sharp joined me to discuss the tricky financial waters that come with following the artistic path. He's a financial educator that provides valuable advice for performing artists like actors, dancers, lighting gurus, costumers or stagehands on investing, saving and building a diversified and stable financial portfolio. While he writes specifically for artists who have fluctuating, uncertain and sometimes limited streams of income, he promotes an understanding of finances and the investment world that has lessons for anyone starting their financial education. David was a founding member and initiated the formation of the Thriving Artists Investment Club, a limited partnership established by a small group of artist/friends to educate one another about investing and personal portfolio management. Through that, he also gained greater insight into how the artist can best be educated about their finances and investing. For more than a decade, David has been teaching investment workshops at HB Studio, an acting conservatory in New York City. This has provided him with the invaluable opportunity to hone his ideas for educating artists in regard to their finances, and to enjoy the success experienced by those who have implemented the ideas and techniques that he promotes. In October 2014, David was named a “money hero” for his work in educating artists about their finances by Money magazine. He is the author of TheThriving Artist: Saving and Investing for Performers, Artists, and the Stage & Film Industries and a contributing author to A Life in Dance: A Practical Guide. S1 Ep 192Ross Dawson - Thriving on Overload
We live in a world with an abundance of valuable information at our fingertips. But the downside is exhaustion from dizzying information overload and a 24-hour news cycle that makes it overwhelming to sift through and process. In fact, in early 2020, 66% of Americans reported being “worn out” by the amount of news.In Thriving on Overload: The Five Powers for Success in a World of Exponential Information (McGraw Hill, 9/6/22), futurist and entrepreneur Ross Dawson contends that the capacity to thrive on limitless information is now the single most important capability for success, yielding not just powerful insight, world-leading expertise, and better decisions, but also improved wellbeing. Ross draws on the experiences of his world-class clients, which include Citibank, Coca-Cola, Google, KPMG, Microsoft, News Limited, Oracle, Procter & Gamble, PwC, and Walmart. He shows how to make information overload something to capitalize on instead of run from—and how this can improve your career (in any field), ventures, investments and life. S1 Ep 189QUICK TIP - Trying to avoid a profit warning
I interviewed Rudi Filapek-Vandyck this week and he kindly responded to my arm-twisting to give us a few more moments to discuss the violent up and down movements this week on world markets. Apparently, it’s a lot to do with low volume and short covering. This interview was recorded on October 5th and I’m releasing this over the weekend of October 8-9 after the US S&P500 dropped on Friday by about 2 and a half percent. Not boding well for our market on Monday. S1 Ep 188Rudi Filapek-Vandyck - Myth-busting the PE ratio
One of the most used investment tools available is the Price-Earnings (PE) ratio. It causes so much confusion among investors who like to treat it as a one size fits all instrument to find "value" in the share market. According to Rudi Filapek-Vandyck, there is no such thing as a simple universal measure to decide which stocks represent attractive "value" and which ones are "overvalued".More info at the blog post: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/fnarenaFind out more about FNArena at https://www.fnarena.com/ and @Filapek if Twitter is your thing. S1 Ep 187QUICK TIP - Hard-wired for fear
There’s a 54% chance that any given day on the ASX will be an up day. It might not feel like it at the moment but that statistic holds true over a longer period of time. This interview was recorded last November and there have been 2 changes. We were still in a bull or up market, and Anthony Doyle was working as a Fundie at Fidelity. He’s now with Firetrail. In this Quick Tip Anthony talks about the difference between large fund management and individual investors, Active ETFs as a way of accessing emerging markets and acknowledging as humans we are hard-wired for fear. You can find the full episode at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/doylePlease consider a small donation if you'd like to support my work educating and entertaining new investors in the stock market.Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. S1 Ep 186Mathew Hodge - Morningstar | The Good The Bad and The Ugly of Mining
It's 30 plus degrees underground, a hundred percent humidity, the air is saturated, and you breathe out, like steam in the morning. The underground is soaking hot, because the air can't take any more moisture."Australia’s mining industry is a pillar of the Australian economy, with the country being one of the world’s largest exporters of coal, iron ore, bauxite, alumina, and many other resources. The gross value added by the mining industry was in the hundreds of billions of Australian dollars in the past decade alone. The real gross value added of the mining industry accounted for over 10 percent of the total gross value added in Australia, making it one of the largest economic industries in the country. Over 180 thousand people were employed in the Australian mining industry. Historically, several mining booms have increased investment in mining, leading to higher incomes from mining activities and more immigration to Australia." - Mining industry in Australia - statistics & facts | StatistaMatthew Hodge is the Director of Equity Research for Morningstar Australasia. Graham Hand is the managing editor of Firstlinks Australia, one of my favourite investing newsletters. In this Quick Tip I invited Graham to respond to a listener question about Stocks, ETF’s, bonds, cash, property and how they should be balanced when constructing a portfolio. The interview was a couple of years ago so the part about bonds is a little out of date, but the rest contains good, sensible high fibre investing encouragement.https://www.firstlinks.com.au/Also a bonus appearance from my wife playing the harp in the background - just so you understand the kind of racket I have to wake up to each morning! You can find the full episode at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/firstlinksPlease consider a small donation if you'd like to support my work educating and entertaining new investors in the stock market.Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Today we have a break from normal programming. You may or may not know that I am the co-host of the ETFs for Beginners Podcast. We had Dave Gow from Strong Money Australia on the show and I found his money chat to be truly inspiring. I hope you enjoy listening to Dave and ETFs for Beginners with the wonderful Ana Kresina.Strong Money Australia focuses on helping people reach Financial Independence and Retire Early (FIRE) in Australia. Dave publishes regular articles and podcasts, sharing his thoughts and the key lessons that have helped him on his journey. You can find out more at: https://strongmoneyaustralia.com/"I like the fact that I can get a decent income stream every quarter, every year, but when I'm looking at investments, I am kind of considering the bigger picture, like the bigger portfolio in mind first and foremost, rather than just chasing the highest yield from here there and everywhere. So I'm more interested in like a pretty diversified portfolio, but hopefully one that produces like a decent income at the same time. So it's kind of a balance and I definitely wouldn't chase super high yields just because it looks more attractive or it's more kind of immediate gratification of getting the high payments each quarter."Please consider a small donation if you'd like to support my work educating and entertaining new investors in the stock market.Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. S1 Ep 179Spencer Jakab from the Wall Street Journal | The Revolution That Wasn't
If you don't know who the sucker is at the poker table it's you. I was joined in this conversation by Wall Street Journal reporter Spencer Jakab. His latest book is “The Revolution That Wasn’t: GameStop, Reddit and the Fleecing of Small Investors.” The frenzy in meme stocks in 2021 was perceived as a Robin Hood style raid on Wall Street. Reddit forums filled with young men holding "diamond hands" taking down the financial industry. The truth was far more nuanced. We also took a detour to look at insider trading by members of Congress.Spencer Jakab writes for and edits the Heard on the Street Column at The Wall Street Journal. He was Deputy Editor between 2015 and 2019 and wrote the Journal’s daily investing column, Ahead of the Tape, for four years before that. Spencer spent four years at Britain’s Financial Times writing the “Lex” and “On Wall Street” columns and got his start in financial journalism at Dow Jones Newswires where he was part of a SABEW-winning team covering energy markets.Spencer is the author of two books on the plight of individual investors, both published by the Portfolio imprint of Penguin Random House.“Heads I Win, Tails I Win: Why Smart Investors Fail and How To Tilt the Odds in Your Favor” (2016) and “The Revolution That Wasn’t: GameStop, Reddit and the Fleecing of Small Investors.” His first career was in finance where he spent years as a top-rated emerging market stock analyst. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and three sons. Here's a link to the blog post and transcript: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/jakabHere's a link to the book: The Revolution That Wasn't: Gamestop, Reddit, and the Fleecing of Small Investors by Spencer Jakab (goodreads.com)Please consider a small donation if you'd like to support my work educating and entertaining new investors in the stock market.Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. S1 Ep 175David Bassanese - Chief Economist at Betashares - Some economic basics
Economic news or fear porn? Sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference. News media love our eyeballs and bad news is what grabs our attention. Bad news plays on our fear, uncertainty and doubt. Even when times are good, the media loves bad news. In this episode I asked David Bassanese to give us a quick education in basic economic concepts. It may provide some protection against those big words and numbers that can affect our investing. David Bassanese is Chief Economist with BetaShares, an independent Australian manager of exchange traded products (ETPs), with over $A23 billion in funds under management. Ex-Federal Treasury escapee and spent time sipping espressos at the Paris-based OECD. Also worked at Macquarie/Bankers Trust in senior market economist/strategist roles. He had the good fortune of starting young as an investor, and was the Research Analyst and then Advisor of Motley Fool Hidden Gems from 2014 – 2018, during which period his recommendations more than doubled the market return. He has a go-anywhere, do-anything approach to investing, but he always considers the impact his investments have on society and the environment, not just the expected financial return. You can find the full episode at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/claude-walkerPortfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. S1 Ep 171Mathew Hodge - Morningstar | Finding your investing style
What's your investment style? What makes a good business? What makes a good investment? In this episode I'm joined by Matthew Hodge, Director of Equity Research for Morningstar Australasia. We spoke about learning to become a better investor, upgrading your own software, a couple of key ratios that help you understand company valuations and the importance of investing what you know and understand.“There are hoards of professionals out there who are spending their time doing this stuff, right? Like you can't compete with that. I occasionally go to a wine tasting group, right? And this wine tasting group is full of people who are working in the industry and tasting a hundred or 200 wines a week. I can't compete with that as an amateur. You have to know your limitations, right. But it's possible if you're interested and you learn and you figure out your niche and what you are looking for. What's your investment style? S1 Ep 170QUICK TIP - Fixed Income - What is it, and how does it sit in a portfolio?
There are many asset classes with various risk profiles that investors need to be aware of. If you take a look at your super, you’ll often see Fixed Income in your investment options. This Quick Tip is with Camilla Love, the founder and Managing Director of ETF provider eInvest. We discussed fixed income, what to watch out for and what role is in a portfolio mix."If you're looking at a fixed income fund that is returning 6% or more per annum, you really need to lift that hood, look at what's in it and understand the volatility and return profile of fixed income because if fixed income's not there to be your insurance policy, it's there for something else, and you need to understand that when putting a portfolio together."If you're interested in the full episode tune in at : https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/einvestShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. S1 Ep 167Simon Shields - Monash Investors | Reporting Season
What is reporting season and how do analysts and fund managers find the numbers to run the tape measure over a company? Australian listed companies share their financial reports twice a year, generally in February (half yearly), and the full year in August. They come out and talk about the results for the half or the full year with a presentation, and generally an outlook statement and that's reporting season. We have it in a six monthly period in Australia. Simon Shields is the Portfolio Manager and co-founder of Monash Investors. We spoke about his approach to reporting season, his style of investing and the ETM that his company runs, MAAT. S1 Ep 166QUICK TIP - What's an index and why is it important to look behind ETFs?
Just as you study a company before you buy it’s shares, you need to study ETFs and what they are comprised of before diving in. Simon Karaban is a Senior Vice President at SGX Singapore Exchange where he works creating indexes. Most passive ETFs are based on an index and Simon has plenty of insights behind the scenes. In this Quick Tip Simon warns about some ETFs that are designed only to attract investors. They may not have the best returns or they may not even be comprised of the kind of companies that you would expect in the description. It’s about looking under the hood to see the engine that’s driving the ETF. Is it going to provide the returns that you expect, and is it truly investing in what you think it’s investing in?Here's a link to the episode that this Quic Tip came from: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/karabanShares for Beginners is sponsor-funded. From the birth of disco (it was 1953!), capital raising, the tortoise and the hare, businesses blessed by bountiful accounting principles and the banking of the future. Steve covers a lot of ground in this episode. I've had this interview on the shelf since May, but it is still relevant in terms of the decline of technology stocks. I think it's also good to hear from US investors. As we know the ASX is 2% of world markets so it's always worth learning a little more about Wall Street. Steve Symington is a lead advisor for 7investing. S1 Ep 162Zarmeen Pavri & Jeremy Liddle - SDGx Ventures Climate Tech Fund
What are the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and how can investing help to achieve them? What's the difference between ESG & Impact Investing? What we do as investors matters. Across the different asset classes, we find a spectrum of impact – from negative to positive – that needs to be addressed. The solutions are not clear-cut. We live in a complex world, and while it’s easy to blame oil, gas and animal farming for a majority of the emissions, if we were to stop drilling for oil, using gas and herding cattle today, our civilization would collapse tomorrow. A significant amount of people would starve or freeze to death within days. This is why decarbonization require a system-wide transformation. Financial markets have the unique opportunity to drive this transformation and start a phase shift. Capital is the enabler for innovation and prosperity. By leveraging the right strategies transformational impact can be created that serves the planet, people and profits.Jeremy Liddle and Zarmeen Pavri work in the Venture Capital space and run SDGx Ventures Climate Tech Fund.
