Dorian loves this new lifestyle so much he makes a wish that his picture will age and wither instead of his body. As the years go by, He is so ridden with guilt, he thinks that only full confession will absolve him of wrongdoing, Dorian decides to destroy the last vestige of his conscience. Enraged, He stabs the picture tearing it to shreds. The servants of the house awaken on hearing a cry from the locked room. The year was 1650, and he connived to have Matthew Maul declared a wizard, condemned to die on the scaffold, which is where our story begins. Halfway down a biased street in one of our New England towns stands a rusty wooden house with seven acutely peaked gables facing towards various points of the compass and a huge clustered chimney in the midst. So begins the second novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. And to tell you the rest of it, here is the tortured uneasy spirit of the wizard Matthew Maul who died before his time and left a curse that endured for over two centuries. In the story, a man accompanies his adventurous aunt to a notorious house where, a century ago, a servant was murdered by her jealous suitor. As the two visitors spend the night exploring the dark, empty rooms, it becomes more and more apparent that the house has not forgotten the old tragedy.
