S1 Ep 128Radio Mystery Theater The Headstrong Corpse 0128

Original Airdate: Aug 06, 1974Episode 0128 "The Headstrong Corpse"Written by George Lowthar, Directed by Himan Brown, Host: E.G. MarshallLord Berly of Moreland is dead. In life, he feared being buried alive, so he is left to lie in an open crypt until doctors are sure he is dead. While lying in state, somebody steals his body. Murder, mutilation, and corpse snatching take place in this 1874 Gothic whodunit.Welcome to the wonders of your own imagination, for although I am about to tell you a horror story, it is really your imagination that will bring it to life for you. I shouldn't even say I will tell it, for it's really the story of Edward Somerset, as recounted in his private journal dated London 1874. a truly harrowing account of what took place at Moorland Manor. As you may know, it's a custom of mine, a hobby, if you will, to read old diaries and journals, the accounts of lives written down by people long since dead and in their graves. Recently, I had the good fortune to come across the journal of a certain Edward Somerset, a young London lawyer, barrister, the English would say, who tells a grisly tale of what took place at Moorland Manor in the year 1874. According to Edward Somerset, but no, let him tell the story in his own words, just as he recorded it in his journal.Starring: Suzanne Grossman, Cort Benson, Gordon Gould, Ian Martin, Anne Potaniak, George Lowther

S1 Ep 127Radio Mystery Theater I Thought You Were Dead 0127

Original Airdate: Aug 05, 1974Episode 0127 "I Thought You Were Dead"Written by Sam Dann, Directed by Himan Brown, Host: E.G. MarshallAn authoress begins to get phone calls from the husband and writing partner she killed out of professional jealousy. What does he want with her? An ancient Chinese anecdote tells of a poor man who meets a philosopher. The poor man begs for charity. The philosopher says, Look at that pebble. He points to a tiny stone. The stone turns to gold. The poor man says, May I have something bigger? The philosopher points to a rock, and it too turns to gold. The poor man again asks for something bigger. The philosopher points to a mountain. The entire mountain turns to gold. The poor man is still unhappy. Finally, the philosopher asks, What do you want? And the poor man replies, I want your finger. The moral of this and the tale you're about to hear you can't satisfy everybody.A statement, a slogan. Should never be accepted merely because it is widely held and seldom challenged. For instance, they say dead men tell no tales, but this is not necessarily so, as many a murderer has discovered, but too late. A dead man, especially a recently dead man, can tell a veritable anthology of tales to people like doctors. and detectives. But what has all this to do with Jennifer Partridge? Jennifer Partridge. Sleek, slender, sophisticated Jennifer. In exactly ten seconds the telephone will ring in Jennifer's elegant penthouse apartment. And Jennifer is going to speak to a dead man.Starring: Arlene Francis, Robert Dryden, Mary Jane Higby, Guy Sorel

MarshallA young couple, desperate for a comfortable and inexpensive apartment, run across a newspaper ad. They are delighted to find an inexpensive apartment in Central Park West. They think they’ll be fighting the line for the apartment, but in fact it is only advertised in their paper. A little too late they suddenly realize that the landlord is a real printer's devil…For most of us, is there any more alluring form of minor masochism than the good old-fashioned ghost story? The icy fingers running shivering shocks up and down the spine, playing that fascinating dichotomy of, this might have been me, but, oh, thank the Lord it wasn't. So this ghost story begins with Joel and Jane Trent, early twenties, married eight months, starting out in life with a future unlimited, except the present unfortunate necessity of counting every penny to make life work and to live in some dignity and comfort. And then, the fabulous break, or what seemed the fabulous break. that marvelous ad in the classified section of the Sunday Chronicle. The man is plagued by the women in his life when even the spirit of his deceased spouse begins to torment him at night. You're just in time to join me on another journey through that uncharted, limitless, mysterious world of your own imagination. It has been said that a man who tries to please two women satisfies neither and succeeds only in vexing himself. So many men have heard of this most prudent and profitable advice Indeed, they acknowledge it. They agree with it. They even respect it. Why don't they follow it? It was Sigmund Freud the master himself who said the great question which I have not been able to answer despite my 30 years of research into the feminine soul is what does a woman want? Well such a question may have disturbed the immortal doctor, but not the man you were about to meet His name is Silas Cunningham and if you were to ask him, what does a woman want? Original Airdate: July 4, 1974Episode 0114 "The Young Die Good"Written by Murray Burnett, Directed by Himan Brown, Host: E.G. MarshallA couple moves in next door to a strange house with a strange inhabitant. One sees an old, desiccated woman. The other sees a young attractive woman. The difference of vision exacerbates their marital difficulties.Welcome to the shadowy land of the imagination where all things are possible. Would you believe that a husband and wife could look at the same woman and the wife would see her as an old lady almost in her dotage while the husband sees a beautiful woman in her early thirties? Impossible, you say? I've never been able to figure out why it's customary to tie strings of empty tin cans to the car of newlyweds. What do the empty cans signify? I can't go along with the cynic who suggested... that the cans symbolize the extent of home-cooked meals that the poor groom is going to get for the remainder of his lifetime. I know for a fact that this wasn't true of the young newlyweds we're about to meet. Lisa and Ray Bissonnette. Lisa happened to be a good enough cook to be able to win prizes. And on the day our story opens, she'd left a roast in the oven while she went out and explored the small grounds of the Bissonnette's little dream house. A high hedge ran alongside the driveway that separated the Bissonnette house from their neighbor. Starring: Patricia Elliot, Carol Tietel, Ira Lewis, Dan Ocko

You have forgotten, and try as you will, you simply cannot remember what it was like to be a child. I don't know the reason for this, but perhaps it's because being a child is not always the happy thing we think it is. We said earlier that this story is an important one. Not because our small hero is an important figure a boy of ten How much time has he had to achieve importance in our world? No We call our story important because it is our attempt to explore the inner life of one small child. An attempt which we admit may be awkward and incomplete because we have grown up and in growing up grown stupid.Starring: Michael Tolan, Marian Seldes, Gilbert Mack, Hetty Galen, Martha Greenhouse

MarshallA down-on-her-luck woman receives the opportunity to go back and change her life and her fortunes, righting past wrongs.Welcome once again to another adventurous journey across the mysterious and terror -filled terrain of the human imagination. The moving finger, the poet said, writes. And having wit moves on. Not all your piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all your tears. Wash out a word of it. Well, we seek no quarrel with the great Omar, but the fact is that anything written can be rewritten, even erased. It's all merely a matter of knowing the right people. This is not the best of all possible worlds. But it's the only world we have at this point. And so there are times when we despair of the inequity and unfairness of so many things. But we should remember, there is justice. Even though it may not always look that way, there is justice. And justice moves at its own pace, manifests itself in its own way. A way that is sometimes as obvious and dramatic as a bolt of lightning. Sometimes as silent, as unobtrusive as the fall of a leaf. But either way, justice will have been done, finally, irrevocably, and for all eternity. But let us begin our story, or rather continue, for who knows when any story really begins. At Ramelletti's, which is, as you know, a very chic, very exclusive watering place, for the very wealthy. Starring: Mercedes McCambridge, Patricia Wheel, Robert Maxwell, Leon Janny

Dr Jekyll is a kind, well-respected and intelligent scientist who meddles with the darker side of science, as he wants to bring out his 'second' nature. S1 Ep 106Radio Mystery Theater Three Times Dead 0106

Original Airdate: June 17, 1974Episode 0106 "Three Times Dead"Original Story by Sam Dann Directed by Himan Brown Host: E.G. MarshallAfter a cop is forced to kill robbers, the grateful shop owner gives his wife a statue that will grant three wishes. Won't you join me once again for an adventure in mystery and suspense, where space is as boundless and as unlimited as your imagination and time is measured by the beat of your heart. Most of us know who we are but how many of us know why we are. Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief is each man's lot ordained from the beginning and fated to be or not to be or is it all a random throw of the dice a casual flip of a coin do we tamper with fate at our peril. Consider Napoleon. Historians agree that his doom at Waterloo had been ordained some three years before in his costly victory at Borodino, a tiny village on the road to Moscow. They say that at Borodino, he lost the flower of his army. And why did he lose so many of his best soldiers? Because he was unable to think clearly. The reason? He was suffering from a severe cold. Why? Well, we know that his orderly had gotten drunk the day before, and thus neglected to have a pair of dry boots ready for the great general. So, in a very real sense, this unnamed, unknown, obscure military servant changed the course of history. Those are the facts. We may ask, why was the orderly drunk? Did it just happen Or was it all part of a plan? Is every single action on the part of every living thing prescribed, ordained, decreed? We don't know. We're just asking. As will some of the people you're about to meet.Starring: Suzanne Grossman, William Redfield, Sam Gray, Dan Ocko

Original Airdate: June 06, 1974Episode 0102 "Darling Deadly Delores"Original Story by Sam Dann, Directed by Himan Brown, Host: E.G. MarshallA scientist working on a top secret super-weapon is horrified to discover that the project's computer plans to utilize the weapon to purge the Earth of humans in favor of metal-based life.Once again, I would like to lead you through the terrifying, suspenseful world of the imagination. And on this journey, we will ask ourselves... What is life? Is life something that man and animals alone may experience? Well, there's vegetable life, too. But how about mineral life? Is there life in a piece of metal? That metal fender, which has been so artfully created to fit your automobile, does it feel the pain of being mined, melted, shaped? How do you know? Man is basically an animal and so it might be better perhaps if man accepted this fact graciously and tried to live with it. If you look at the thing calmly, dispassionately, wherein does lie our superiority to the species we so arrogantly classify as the lower orders? Morally, we have much to learn from wolves who make better parents, from foxes who make morefaithful spouses, and from dogs who make more devoted friends. Admitted, we do have a higher intelligence. Perhaps that is precisely the problem. Man the intelligent is never happy unless he is developing, making better, improving and it's entirely possible that if this keeps up, we may just manage to improve ourselves out of existence. Our story begins on a gray winter's afternoon in a lovely rural section of western Massachusetts. Starring: Nat Polen, Marian Seldes, Earl Hammond, Roger DeKoven

Not badly, at any rate. Nothing to make you run screaming into the street. No, the most this ghost story can do is make you snuggle down deeper under the covers and reach out for a hand to hold. But if ever I should, I hope you'll do something more than moan and sigh and clank chains. What I should really enjoy would be a nice chatty ghost. Would sit down and talk things over. Things like whether the life after death is really pleasanter than the one before. And if it is, why is it? Things like that. Things that only a ghost would know. Ah, well. Perhaps one fine day or some dark night, if I hold myself in readiness, my ghost will visit me. Meantime, relax, won't you? And listen. MarshallA young loser is offered free cars, apartments, and money in exchange for his body. An old millionaire wants to "trade souls" with him so that he can have a young body again. Welcome once again to the shadow world of mystery and suspense, to a dark andcryptic universe called the imagination. When we were young, we liked to believe there are things money cannot buy. You know, things like love, happiness. But as we grow older and learn more about the world, well, we're not so sure. As matter of fact, many of us even begin to believe that the only thing money cannot buyis a fresh new body and a chance to live another lifetime. Well, don't be too sure of that. All of our great religions agree on one important point. The soul leaves the bodyafter death. However, from time to time the question has been raised, Can the soul leave before the body dies? Philosophers have considered the point, and as usual in these matters, have reached no consensus of opinion. Actually, they found it difficult to define just exactly what the soul is. Well, we're about to meet a young man namedJackson Hanley, who will soon become intimately concerned with the problem even though no one has ever accused him of being a philosopher. He has, however, often been accused of other things, which is why our story opens in what is a rather familiar locale for Jack Hanley, a police station. MarshallAn actor is tormented through the television set by the ghost of a dead producer who wants him to kill his widow.Perhaps you've come to look upon me as the master of the macabre, your escort to the eerie. And in all honesty, I can say that I am happy you have this opinion of me. I'll admit to an affinity for tales of the supernatural and even a sneaking fondness for ghosts. Some ghosts, that is. I cannot say that I have liked every ghost I have met. Because in my experience, there can be some very unpleasant ghosts, like this one. There are many stories about faceless voices that speak to lonely people. Voices that come from nowhere. that threaten, cajole, terrify, or madden the mortals who hear them. Our story is about such a voice, but it is a voice that has a face, the face of a dead man. Most of us know what to expect when we turn on a television set, but the last thing Jason Phillips expected was to have the face of a dead man appear on his television tube.Starring: Mandel Kramer, Ralph Bell, Evie Juster, Robert Kaliban

And it's mystery we have in store for you today in a house nestled in the pleasant English countryside. It's a modest two-story cottage, high on a rise that overlooks the tiny hamlet of Salford below. The residents of the town give it a wide berth. Even though no one has lived in it for more than two years, and two young men who rented it discovered why. No one knew this better than the justly celebrated author Robert Louis Stevenson No one has ever expressed it more vividly more frighteningly than he in his story the Suicide Club.Compulsion. What is it? What is it within most of us, perhaps all of us, that compels us to do this or that? What drives the alcoholic to take that first drink he knows will lead to drunkenness, and almost certainly eventual death?
