EP81 - Arnold Begay - Life on the Navajo "Rez" and Badwater 135
Arnold is a very experienced runner here in Tulsa who has had a really interesting life. Until middle school, he grew up on a Navajo reservation in Arizona with no electricity or running water. The life he lived there, prepared him to be an Ultrarunner later in life. Arnold ran his first ultra, a 100 miler, in 2006, and has been testing himself every since. Fawn Hernandez recently completed the 223 mile Ouachita Trail FKT! Fawn and her husband, Justin are friends in South Louisiana. They are both strong Ultra Runners and all-around awesome humans! We cover a lot of ground in this episode. After the sudden loss of her father, Fawn questioned whether she would or could undertake this FKT attempt. Arlen Glick is FAST! And getting faster! He's just 28 years old and ran the Tunnel Hill 100 mile race in just 12:57:11 in November. Then, he followed that up with a win at Umstead with a 13:22:40! It was fun getting to know Arlen and discuss how he realized his God-given talent and his journey to where he is today. Randy has been running Ultramarathons for quite a while and is still going strong! He was running Leadville in the 80s. He even ran across the United States and wrote a book about it. He and his friend Ronnie are well known for their training and aid station shenanigans. Chris and I both ran the Tahoe 200 in 2018 and we take some time to compare our experiences and laugh a lot about the videos on the internet of his delirium! Chris also gives us an update on his recovery from a fall last year that took him out of the Moab 240 due to a broken hip and wrist. (Hint: He'll be running Umstead 100 when this is released!) In 2017 Amanda came to a point in her life where something had to change. She was unhappy with where she was in life, but even more unhappy with WHO she was. It was time to let her potential out and become who she was meant to be. She quit smoking and drinking and joined a gym. Amanda dove into a healthy lifestyle without looking back. In just 7 months, she lost 100 pounds and discovered her love for running! She was born for it! Amanda qualified for Boston on her first Marathon, then found the trails and ultramarathon, and has lived in that world ever since. Ralph Peterson is a Marine Core Veteran who got busy with life and forgot to take care of himself. One day, he simply decided to make a change in how he took care of himself. Since that decision, he's lost 150 pounds, run 88 marathons, many more half marathons, and multiple ultramarathons! This change also gave him the confidence to run his own business, train others in management, write 4 books, and address large crowds for various events.

Today on the podcast I get to visit with Oklahoma native, Marcus Tubbs. I heard about Marcus from a friend and past podcast guest, Jeremy Harrison. I heard that Marcus was a good guy and a strong runner and that he was running the inaugural Outlaw 100. I added him on social media and we've had some great exchanges. I could tell that Marcus was a great guy. On the podcast, I finally got to actually talk to him and get to know him. Marcus is indeed a strong runner. He won the first Outlaw 100 and the first Outlaw 135 this past year. Like many of us, Marcus started running later in life, but fell in love with it.
