After Rou returns to the camp, the trio are able to make contact with Lady Benjamina. Despite her concern that the quest has changed hands a few times, she is relieved to hear progress has been made. As they settle back to bed, Eight notices a pair of glowing eyes in the dark. Finding the eyes belong to what appears to be a bear, Trix attempts to scare it off but instead makes it angry.
The trio confront the bear and soon realize it is no ordinary forest animal, but rather one enhanced with metallic sinew. They are able to drive it off, but given the risk of its return they decide to set off on the next leg of their journey immediately. Eight takes the reins and nearly leads them off course before they arrive at a large river.
