S2 Ep 47Karl Sona - Driving Profitable Partnerships for Minority-Owned Businesses!

About Karl: I am a man on a mission to create more profitable partnerships between black-owned businesses and large corporate brands. As a first-generation immigrant from Cameroon, I grew up having to always be different versions of myself. Whether it was under my parent's roof where I had to adhere to cultural standards, or out in the world having to connect with my white and black peers. Initially, it was a struggle to connect with my true personal identity, as I didn't fall into any particular group stereotype. However, as time went on, I came to realize that I was simply, Karl and that there was an inherent power by just being myself. As I've embraced my true being, I've discovered that my love for building relationships with diverse groups of people from all backgrounds, coupled with my ability to create revenue-generating opportunities for businesses of all sizes has uniquely positioned me as a relationship broker between minority-owned businesses and large corporate brands looking to communicate with more diverse audiences. At the end of the day, if we are able to set our differences aside, I believe that the one color we can all get behind is GREEN, and there are tremendous opportunities to make more of it if we work together in partnership.Website: https://streamlinedpodcasts.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/streamlinedpodcastsLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karl-sona/https://www.linkedin.com/company/streamlinedmedia/ Unite. We're passionate about creating community with wine, especially for wine lovers often overlooked and underrepresented by the wine industry. Our wines are approachable to all palates, fun and made to sip and share. Purchase a bottle or join the wine club at sipandsharewines.com.In January 2019, Sip & Share Wines released the 7 Words Wine Collection, all of the wines are vegan. In January 2020, we released the Gem Collection of limited production wines.Sip & Share Wines Conjure Zinfandel was featured in Forbes Magazine as one of the 10 drinks for the summer. Nicole Kearney, Sip & Share Wines' Winemaker/Founder was named one of 40 African American Tastemakers (Under/Over 40) by Sabrina Jackson. We've participated in The Hue Society’s The Black Wine Experience wine tasting and Roses & Rose’ Brunch at Essence Fest in 2019 and 2018 in New Orleans. Being there lead to being named by Kiarra Sylvester as one of “5 Black- Owned Wines You Should Be Sipping Right Now” published on Xonecole.com.The Indianapolis Recorder has followed our growth with two stories that show where we are now and where we began.Nicole’s serious relationship with wine began in 2008, when she attended graduate school for her Master in Fine Arts (MFA) in Dramatic Writing at Spalding University, Low Residency MFA program, in Louisville, Kentucky. Surrounded by writers of all genres – playwrights, screenwriters, fiction, non-fiction, and poets they shared about their lives and craft while sipping wine. Over two years, they would continue to sip and share wines with each other. It was there her passion for wine knowledge and the spark for her future endeavor was ignited. In 2011, Nicole’s good friend Mark gifted her a 32 bottle wine refrigerator as a housewarming gift. Of course, she had to fill it! She had a party asking people to bring wine. She gave them some parameters (She drank red almost exclusively at that time) and sent her friends on a wine hunt around town. It was an incredible success. Her guests got to try different wines and her wine chest was magically filled. Little did she know, she had just hosted her first home wine tasting. In December 2013, her friend Niesha invited her to a wine tasting. She accepted without hesitation. The hostess, Marla graciously welcomed Nicole into her home. The wine tasting was fantastic, conducted by an independent representative of a national home wine tasting company. Nicole tasted new wines, beginning a love affair with South African wines. The group of women she was introduced to that night bonded over their enjoyment of wine. They decided to host a party monthly at each other’s homes. In January 2014, Nicole’s friend had a wine tasting in her home. The time for the tasting to begin was approaching, Nicole asked “Where was the ‘wine lady?’ Her friend answered she didn’t know. She had not talked to her in a month. Having a house full of guests, Nicole gathered a few of her wines then called a friend, Taffanee and asked to “borrow” a few more bottles. She brought a case. That night Nicole became ‘The Wine Lady.’Nicole guided the guests through a tasting of twelve wines from around the world, sharing what she learned with others. That night she helped many people find their way from, “I only drink…” to, “Wow, this wine is delicious.” This gave me great pleasure. Her friends suggested she consider getting into the wine business. She started doing some initial research, then moved on with my life. She had plays and streaming series to finish writing. Her interest in being in the wine industry was refueled in Spring 2015 after several incidents occurred at corporate wine tastings – her name not being on the attendee list, her guests almost being turned away, being seated in the back and continuously told to be quiet despite her wine tribe purchasing a lot of wine. The spark was reignited. In June 2016, Nicole attended Open Bite Night, a community block party to support a friend. I mentioned to a friend, Niesha, “There should be a vendor who only sells adult beverages.” She said, “Why not you?” A few weeks later, Niesha contacted me to let me know she had registered me for the event. There was no charge for first-time participants and they provided the table and chairs. I decided to no longer put off my dream and step out on faith. “Sip & Share Wines” was born.On October 1, 2016, Sip & Share officially opened for business at Open Bite Night: Ridiculous. We SOLD OUT of our handcrafted Red and White Sangrias (now Abundance and Awaken). The Sangrias quickly gained a following, from being served by-the-glass out of a punch bowl to people wanting more than a glass to enjoy as they checked out the various vendors at the different events where we set up.Enter Mason jars with straws in the lids. It was a hit! Then folks begin to ask to take Sip & Share Sangrias home with them. In March 2018, Sip & Share Wines became a licensed f

Graduated from there and then went on to college at the University of Texas at Austin.Majored in Mechanical Engineering, but realized later that I didn’t want to be an engineer, so I got a minor in business. Was very active on campus (president and step master of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, active with Dean of Students Office, etc.)Met my wife (Tiesha aka Tie) in college.Had our first child shortly after graduating and getting married in 1999 (son - Jalen)Early Career:First job out of college was as a Production Facilitator with Johnson and Johnson (Ethicon) in West Texas ( San Angelo). Jalen was actually born there.Worked the 2nd shift in a production plant where they manufactured sutures, bone mesh and other medical products. Lead a team of employees that pieced together the sutures.Loved it there, but moved to Houston after one year to be closer to family and after a difficult pregnancy.Took a job in Houston with then Anderson Consulting (now Accenture). Started as a Tibco Developer (programming) before eventually moving into more business consulting in addition to systems integration consulting.Enjoyed the fast pace consulting environment and the learning, achieving early promotions to both Consultant and Manager levels. However, the fast pace took a toll on my personal life. Especially after our daughter was born, so I stopped traveling and took a local project in Houston.Shortly after that, my dad committed suicide (February 13, 2006). To this day, I feel that if it was more acceptable to discuss and be open with how you feel (especially as a black man and our challenges) that my dad would be here today. His death affected me more than I realized which I would come to understand later. It was also the catalyst for change in my early career. Shortly after, I decided to leave consulting and move into an industry - to allow me to go back to school and get my MBA. It was there that I met one of my lifelong mentors (Darily Jones). She was one of very few Black women executives in oil and gas in Houston at the time. Encouraged me to follow through on my plans to get my MBA and even supported me at work. Even went out of her way to get the company to cover more of the costs for my MBA (at Rice University). She has helped me tremendously over the years and we still stay in touch to this day.Mid Career:After getting my MBA an opportunity presented itself to use this new found knowledge with a larger company. So I made the transition to the waste industry (i.e., trash and recycling) in 2011. Becoming a Director of Innovation and Business Optimization at Waste Management. The guy that hired me is another one of my lifelong mentors and someone who has helped me grow - Dave Murphy (aka Murph). He specifically hired me into his small - but high profile - innovation group because he wanted someone who did not grow up in the industry and was not white. Get that, a white dude who understood the power of diversity, and actually sought it out.Murph was a huge part of my growth and development at WM. He made sure I had opportunities to interact with the C-Suite, and eventually honored his promise to me to get me P&L responsibility. My first P&L responsibility was running a small retail product business called Bagster (~ $50 Million business). Loved having the opportunity to run a business and make strategic decisions that impacted the top line. Not just run a department that was a cost center - whi

Dr. Dormer has also an interesting education pursuit with many up and down. For example, he started out with the wrong person during the 10th grade and barely went to his classes. When he graduated from high school, he had less than a 3.00 GPA. It would seem that his dream that his had since his earliest memory would be dashed. To make matter worst and teacher would did not care for him much gave him a very poor grade in Chemistry which was a surprise to him and to his mother, who actually cried at his graduation. Dr. Dormer was a nerd and his social skills was not the best. Even so, it was during high school in which a teacher took him under his wing. Ms. So' Brien, who was his science teacher, took him under her wing and he became her teacher's assistant. During his 11th and 12th grade he was making all of her labs for her science class. It was this experience that propel Dr. Dormer is decided during that time to become a physician scientist. In addition, during this time he learned about the Black American scientist Percy Julian, who also owned his own company and was a self-made millionaire. I said to myself if he could accomplish so much during the time of segregation that I do even better during this hear and now.I made a goal after high to graduate at the top of my class from college with no C on my transcript and in four years. I was able to accomplish that goal, graduating from Oakwood University Summa Cum Laude with no Cs on his transcript and in four years. He was also accepted to several medical schools. He had a passion for research and so during medical school he was able to work during the summer on projects involving the areas of diabetes and immunology. Upon finishing medical he went on to work in the area of health administration. He has been able to work at several education settings including teacher as the associated professor at Atlantic Union College (AUC) and Washington Adventist University (WAU).He was recruited to WAU to bring research to the institution. It become a struggle since there was no faculty research environment to bring this opportunity to the school. However, in the middle of this disappointment was able to start PepVax, Inc in 2013. The company focuses of licensing and developing targeted human health solutions via it patent protected technology called SMARTmid(tm), which heck-invented. Several companies has spun off from PepVax, making Dr. Dormer a serial entrepreneur. In 2019, he started BioLabShare, LLC when he was trying find affordable wet lab bioresearch space in Baltimore. S2 Ep 8Ego Iwegbu - Entrepreneur & CEO

BIO: A mathematics graduate of King's College London, Ego always dreamt of starting her own business. Following graduation, she joined Ford Motor Company's graduate recruitment program (her one and only corporate job) where she spent a few years before "escaping" to start her first beauty business on London's busy Oxford Street. Developing the then new concept of easy, open-plan nail bars located right where you shop, Ego pitched the idea to big high-street brands such as Selfridges&Co and Topshop, securing premium ground-floor space. Ego went on to own and co-own 9 salons in the UK and South Africa, and authored two books on salon business.Realising the difficulty of scaling a service-based business, in 2016 Ego launched a proprietary cosmetics line with her sister Natasha Iwegbu. Natasha had been hand formulating and testing a sublime super clean foundation range since 2005. Having suffered from severe teenage and adult acne, Ego was passionate about offering women confidence boosting beauty solutions that worked no matter what skin type or condition they had. So under the brand name Ms London Natasha’s super clean formulations were enthusiastically launched in the salons to thousands of women and rave reviews. As with all of Ego’s businesses the cosmetics brand grew a cult following in Johannesburg attracting the attention of giant retailers in 2017 and a venture capital funding offer in 2020. The 2 salons and cosmetics line hit the $1.1 million turnover mark in 2018; the growth was so sudden that the companies struggled with inadequate infrastructure around manufacture, logistics, salon management and beauty counter management. A major learning curve for Ego through 2019 into 2020 when the pandemic hit and temporarily closed the salons and counters. Forced to pivot and rethink the market Ego decided to use the VC funding to grow the cosmetics line digitally and in a new market, the US. Together with Natasha and Enygma Ventures backing, Ego rebranded and re-packaged Ms London Cosmetics to The Good Mineral launching in August 2021 online direct-to-consumer. As CEO, Ego‘s focus is strategy, sales, marketing and building the organization to scale The Good Mineral; all while maintaining the South African based salons and cosmetics brand. An energetic, natural communicator and inspirational leader in her career so far, Ego has employed and trained over 250 women. Written for Professional Beauty and Scratch magazine. Been a Professional Beauty Awards judge for 2 years. Been asked to speak at many entrepreneurial and women-focused events and panels including WEConnect with Ernst & Young, The Southern African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SAVCA), Cosmo Hustle and many more. Featured in Cosmopolitan, Elle, Glamour, Grazia, Modern Beauty and on the cover of Destiny Magazine. Ego is a fire starter and all about team spirit!
