The Public Relations Student Society of America is a small, but powerful resource for students at UNR who are interested in a career in public relations. Reporter Lexi Feldman reports from the most recent event, the Digital Content Playbook Event, and interviews board members Aly Marimberga, Camile Flye, and prospective member Demetri Vandarakis.

Every Friday night at 7.p.m, at the E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center Room A on UNR’s campus, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club gathers to sharpen their skills and build group camaraderie. Nate Vallin reports.

The University of Nevada, Reno has many clubs and organizations. Kadreanna Walker reports on the Nevada Taekwondo Club. The club members are very passionate on the history behind this Korean martial art form as well as practicing it.

With the rise of the WNBA this season due to new stars like Caitlin Clark, basketball has been getting more and more popular amongst female students. At the University of Nevada, Reno, that rise in popularity can be seen with the UNR Women’s Basketball Club, where female students can play competitive basketball, while not having to be on the official Women’s Basketball Team. The university allows the club to travel, which allowed its members to win nationals last year and gave the club’s members a chance to play against other colleges such as Stanford and Villanova. UNR journalism student Cameron Perkins reports on this successful club during one of their practices.

This past weekend, as Genevy Machuca reports, the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at the University of Nevada, Reno held its annual fall philanthropy event Watermelon Bust. Which raises money for Feeding America, a nonprofit organization of food banks. The event attracted a large turnout for fraternity brothers and sorority sisters at Whitaker Park. Amid the sounds of cheering and whistles , participants reflected on the significance of the event which combines philanthropy with community building.

Reynolds Sandbox reporters Lizzie Ramirez, Piper Heath, and Jace Ouchida attended a variety of political events last week. Today, they shared their thoughts and observations about them, ranging from Charlie Kirk’s UNR visit to top of the ticket candidates Tim Walz and Donald Trump’s recent respective rallies at the Grand Sierra Resort. They had good moments and also scary ones. Listen to hear their insights and journeys as up and coming political reporters in Nevada.

The lack of mental health attention that military members and veterans receive has constantly been a problem including for veterans studying at UNR. Suicides account for the most deaths for military and veterans, only behind combat. Eric Perez follows fellow veterans now pursuing higher degrees here in Reno who discuss their challenges with mental health.

Most college students have the stress of balancing work, school and life. Elementary Education majors have faced additional stress when it comes to student teaching which is mandatory, takes the whole day every weekday and is unpaid. Lexi Waisanen reports on the additional sacrifices Elementary Education majors have to make.

Over the weekend, the Reno Air Show celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of aviation events in Reno. This event known as the Reno Air Races will be moving to Roswell, New Mexico, beginning in 2025. Despite Reno losing its premiere aviation event, local aviators were excited to engage for a final time with an aviation-minded community. Report by Alin Beane

This Tuesday, right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk made a visit to the University of Nevada, Reno as a part of his #BrainwashedTour. Kirk passed out merchandise, spoke to the crowd, and debated students on behalf of the pro Donald Trump Turning Point USA, a non-profit political organization he founded. Reporting by Trey Kroll.

Conference realignment continues to shake things up in the world of college sports. In recent news, the PAC-12, which had withered down to just two remaining schools, inked deals with a few Mountain West Conference programs to rebuild their conference. Our sports reporting team, Archie, Dom, Trey, and Derek, break down what’s going on and what’s still to come.

The 2024 season for the UNR Men’s Volleyball Club is drawing near. As Matthew Means reports, the team is currently holding practice scrimmages preparing for their first game of the season which will take place in the spring semester.

For Nevadans in Washoe County, a swing county in a swing state, voting can carry a lot more weight than those who vote in historically red or blue states. Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and President of the University Brian Sandoval spoke on the importance of voting at "Discussions in Democracy," an hour-long panel at the Lilley Museum, on Thursday, October 3rd. While Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk got hundreds of supporters during his rally at the University of Nevada, Reno yesterday, other students had opposing feelings. Turning Point USA is known for its activism on college campuses across the U.S., but as Nick Stewart reports not everyone at UNR welcomed it.

Joey Azar and Nathan Vallin look into the recent UNLV NIL dispute involving star quarterback Matt Sluka, discussing what might have been illegal, what an investigation might reveal and what it means for the overall NIL system including for UNR student athletes.

Lexi Waisanen, Alysha Cancino, and Kade Collins discuss some of their experiences falling short at the UNR gym. They explain that the gym is not supportive of clubs such as dance clubs which regularly have issues with it. Students also complain that they barely use the gym, even though the fee is built into student fees.

Lexi Feldman and Alin Beane discuss their experiences with buying food on the UNR campus both with and without a meal plan, and how expensive food has gotten in recent years. Lexi and Alin both rank the dining options on campus and share their experiences with both the taste and quantity of food you get on campus.

Aiden Higgins hosts his fellow Reynolds School of Journalism classmates Matt Segarra, Eric Perez and Jadee Xiong to discuss a looming question; Is a college degree worth it? All four have different reasons for being at UNR and discuss whether they feel they are getting value for the work, money and time they are putting in to get their degrees.

#NevadaVote Hot boxers Kelsea Frobes, Jace Ouchida, and Ariel Van Cleve discuss each Nevada ballot question as well as one for Washoe County, who is for or against a proposed question, and what voting yes or no on each question truly means for Nevada’s future.

They discuss a new hockey club with initial tryouts tonight, the new pickleball club, and the baseball club.

We’ve talked about how important this end-of-the-year stretch is for UNR. A series win against Air Force gave cause for hope, but that hope has since been extinguished after dropping two recent games to New Mexico, one game losing by a 16-0 blowout. UNR had a big series recently against Air Force, one of the teams previously ahead of them in the Mountain West. The question now is whether Wolf Pack baseball can finish the year strong and get above .500. It might be hard to do keep momentum with all the recently canceled games. Nevada Baseball will travel over the pass for a Monday afternoon contest at UC Davis. The Wolf Pack (20-22) will then play Tuesday night at Sacramento State. From there, Nevada will continue Mountain West play at New Mexico from May 10-12.

As we officially say goodbye to what was an amazing basketball season, we make way for the other great sports/programs that represent the Wolf Pack. One of those programs is our UNR Baseball team, currently on the final stretch of a very up-and-down season. There are still many great players to highlight while going over what the rest of this season could look like in our latest sports episode hosted by Jack Sabin.

It may not have been the ending we hoped and dreamed for. But this Wolf Pack team still gave us plenty of exciting moments that made this season oh-so-fun to watch. Listen in as Jack Sabin goes back through those moments and the overall highlights of the 2023-2024 season.

Members of Sigma Phi Epsilon hosted their week-long philanthropy event this past week in order to raise money for the Nevada Cancer Coalition. The week of events included a percentage night at Pub N Sub, pie a sigma in the face, and an Aces game where all the funds collected went to Nevada Cancer Coalition. As Lexi Darcy reports, every Greek life organization also participated in a volleyball game hosted at Manzanita Bowl April 6th, known as “Spike It”.

Jarod Lucas called the game by draining an insane game-winning half-court shot as time expired to absolutely stun the Colorado St. fans on their home court after missing multiple free throws. It was a devastating loss for the Wolf Pack and its fans Tuesday night, losing to New Mexico 83-82. But the season goes on, and now UNR sets its sights on in-state rival UNLV.
