Ep 32032: How To Get (or Stay) Fit in Retirement with Jim Owen
When Jim Owen was 70 years old, he saw himself as an old man for the first time. He was 25 pounds overweight. He suffered from chronic back issues, had two shot knees, and struggled with a frozen rotator cuff. He wasn't happy, and he wasn't comfortable - and when he walked into the gym, he couldn't do a single push-up. Jim had spent the last 35 years in the investment world. He served as a partner in and sold three firms, wrote a number of successful books including The Prudent Investor and Cowboy Ethics, and delivered 35 talks a year as an in-demand speaker for a decade. His grueling schedule doing what he loved took a clear toll on his physical health - and in retirement he didn't want to lose what was left of his mobility. Now, at 78, he's in the best shape of his life. He weighs 50 pounds less than he did in high school - and can knock out three sets of 50 push-ups on command. His chronic pains have gone away, and he sees his best days as ahead of him. Today, Jim joins the podcast to talk about his new book, Just Move, the journey he took to turn his physical health around, why exercise is the foundation of the art of aging well, and his mission to help fellow Boomers get active and live their best lives. Ep 29029: How to Find the Right Retirement Planner For You with Jamie Hopkins
Jamie Hopkins is soon to become the Director of Retirement Research at the Carson Group - and he holds virtually every designation under the sun. He has been the Co-Director of New York Life's Center for Retirement Income, a Professor of the Retirement Income Program at the American College of Financial Services, and helped to create the Retirement Income Certified Professional designation. Ep 27027: Finding Adventure & Purpose Later in Life with Hans Finzel and Rick Hicks
Hans Finzel hates the term retirement - and he really hates the idea that retired people don't have anything to offer the world. He and his friend Rick Hicks are both PhDs and former CEOs who left their roles as they approached the age of 60, but they now spend their time conducting studies, researching, and writing. In their new book, Launch Your Encore: Finding Adventure & Purpose Later in Life, they share real examples of individuals who have transitioned from full-time jobs to volunteer work, ministry, or even entire second careers. They want you to craft a game plan for life after your main career that will position you to succeed personally and make positive contributions to society - and never think about the idea of retirement the same way again. Today, Hans and Rick join the podcast to talk about why hanging out on the couch for 30 years isn't a viable option, the importance of passing the torch on to others, the dangers of losing touch with the outside world, and a variety of exercises you can use to envision - and realize - your second act, even as you're still in your first. You'll hear a number of stories about highly intentional, powerful encores - and how you can build a healthy, satisfying life in retirement. Get Today's Show Notes! Ep 25025: Retirement Planning for the Unwealthy and the Power (and Danger) of Data with Dirk Cotton
Dirk Cotton was a senior executive at a Fortune 500 company. However, after retiring in 2005, he's found himself busier than ever. He loves to do research, specifically retirement research, and publishes often on his blog, The Retirement Café. He's also a Thought Leader at APViewpoint, Advisor Perspectives' online community of investment advisors and financial planners, and provides retirement coaching services in exchange for pizza, craft beer, and charitable donations, among other gifts. As Dirk sees it, a lot of the best financial advice is only available to people who have lots of money - and that's why the Retirement Café focuses on retirement planning for the unwealthy - or those with less than $100,000 in savings. Dirk came highly recommended by Wade Pfau, and his work has proven highly valuable for his readers and his clients alike. Today, Dirk joins the podcast to talk about how his second act as a retirement coach and researcher began, the dangers in trying to predict the future, and the many factors that people often don't understand or think about as they prepare to retire. Ep 17017: Why Smart Women Finish Rich with David Bach
David Bach's goal in life is to inspire a million women to be smarter with money. He's the co-founder of AE Wealth Management, which oversees over $4 billion in assets, as well as the author of Smart Women Finish Rich, a word of mouth phenomenon that has sold over 1 million copies and is now entering its 63rd printing. Unlike many financial books, it's a nice, neat package that's easy to understand - and one that I keep around for women and couples who are looking to learn how to create a secure retirement. It's also a vital resource, as $39.6 trillion of the world's wealth is now controlled by women, and that number is estimated to rise to $72 trillion as soon as 2020. David is a very special guest and a great friend. I'm excited to have him on the podcast to talk about the recently updated edition of his book, the life lessons he learned from his self-made millionaire grandmother, and the unique challenges facing women in retirement. For both women facing retirement and the financial planners who might want to work with them, it's a must listen. Get Today's Show Notes! Ep 14014: Finding Your Purpose and the Importance of Fulfillment - with Todd Tresidder
Todd Tresidder effectively retired at the age of 35 to find a new purpose and to enjoy life day in and day out. He exited the hedge fund management industry to focus on giving impartial advice - unswayed by bias or products to sell - at FinancialMentor.com. There, he has been providing financial education resources, including a number of powerful retirement calculators, since 1998 - well before anyone else was truly in the online financial education space. Todd has had a long, tough journey to get where he is today. He is rethinking the nature of what retirement truly means and the models we use to determine how much money retirees will need to live comfortably after they quit working their primary jobs. He's also digging deep into why so many retirees become listless and unhappy when they stop working - and exploring the reasons so few people are thinking seriously about living fulfilled lives. This led him to create The Money Mammals - financial education for children through books, apps, games, videos, and more. Ep 3003: Choosing Happiness with John Leland
For almost 20 years, three-time author John Leland has been writing about the many different sides of retirement for The New York Times. Right now, more people are living past the age of 85 than any other time in history - and John set out to write a year-long series about them. He wanted to tell stories of people who fell in love in nursing homes, those who never remarried after losing their spouse or partner, people who were still together in old age, living with disabilities, facing illness, and more. John expected this to be a series about loss. What ultimately came out of this series, however, is a book entitled Happiness is a Choice You Make: Lessons From a Year Among the Oldest Old. Today, he joins the podcast from the heart of the Times newsroom to share takeaways, stories, and lessons that I found invaluable as a husband, a financial advisor, and a human being.
