Ep 109109: How to Downsize Your Life (and Upsize Your Lifestyle) with John and Ingrid Sullivan
As empty nesters, retirees often find themselves in homes that are simply too big. With adult children out of the house, empty bedrooms, and projects that need to get done to keep the property in great shape, continuing to maintain a home that made sense for decades can start to feel like a financial burden and a source of real stress. This is why so many retirees start thinking about downsizing - and when they do, I recommend they read John and Ingrid Sullivan's book, The Ultimate Guide to Downsizing: Downsize Your Life to Upsize Your Lifestyle. John and Ingrid are the owners of Senior Downsizing Experts in Arlington, Texas, where they help boomers, seniors, and children of aging parents with moves that can be challenging and emotional. Today, John and Ingrid join the podcast to talk about the financial and emotional benefits of downsizing, the unique challenges and crises they help retirees work through as they help them move out of what are often family homes with decades of history (and belongings), and how to craft a downsizing plan and find a uniquely qualified downsizing dream team to help you make your next years the best they can be. Ep 100100: How To Talk To Your Aging Parents About Money with Cameron Huddleston
We all know we need to talk to our parents about money. We all know that we need to get their affairs in order in case something happens, especially as they get older. However, life has a tendency to get in the way, we table these conversations for later, and we sweep them under the rug. This is a problem for many reasons, but no fact drives this home faster than a Fidelity study in which 69% of parents said they expected one of their children to manage their money, yet over a third of the children surveyed had no idea they were expected to fill that role. Cameron Huddleston is on a mission to help facilitate these tough conversations. He's the author of Mom and Dad, We Need to Talk: How To Have Essential Conversations with Your Parents About Their Finances. It's an excellent, step-by-step guide to help you stop stalling and make plans with advice from Cameron's own experiences as a daughter and financial expert, as well as other financial, legal, and elder care experts. Today, Cameron joins the podcast to discuss the challenges she faced with her own aging parents that led her to write the book. We talk about why these conversations are so taboo (and what to do if your family pushes back on having them). She also gives a number of resources you can share with your parents to help you get a grasp on what their finances really look like, how to keep them protected from scammers in old age, and how to take action if your parents have already become impaired. Ep 94094: Empowering Widows Financially with Dr. Kathleen Rehl
Almost every financial advisor faces a time in their career during which their clients' spouses pass away, and many advisors struggle to know how to both provide support and guidance to their newly widowed clients' surviving partners. In fact, as many as 70% of widows change financial advisors after the death of their spouse, and a lack of understanding is almost always the reason. After Dr. Kathleen Rehl's late husband passed, she set out on a journey to help empower widows, as well as the advisors who work with them. She is the author of Moving Forward On Your Own: A Financial Guidebook For Widows. Though many of the guests I've had on this podcast are authors, this is one of the few books that was fast, easy to read, and full of great insight. Today, Kathleen joins the podcast to talk about how becoming a widow herself completely changed how she works with this demographic, how profound loss affects the decision-making process, and the common mistakes that get so many financial advisors fired after the death of a spouse. You'll also hear stories about how Kathleen's helped her own clients through this difficult time in their lives to pass their values, hopes, and dreams on to the next generation. The word "retirement" inspires a lot of negative feelings in people of all ages, but especially baby boomers. Few people understand this better than Dr. Sara Geber. Sara is the author of Essential Retirement Planning for Solo Agers: A Retirement and Aging Roadmap for Single and Childless Adults. She brings an extensive background in psychology to her experience as a retirement coach, and her book provided me with a lot of insight into how I could better serve the families I work with day in and day out. Today, Sara joins the podcast to talk about why retirement needs reinventing (and how it's already happening), the most common mistakes solo agers make in trying to transition into retirement, and the many new options available as they enter this stage of life. Ep 88088: The Philosophical Questions Behind Retirement with Mitch Anthony
Sometimes a client comes into our office and thinks the way that we plan for retirement is kind of strange. Before we get into the weeds, I often want to talk about what money was like for them growing up, as well as what retirement really means to them. These clients ask, "When are we going to get to tax strategies? When are we going to get to income strategies?" We discuss all of those things, of course, but much of the philosophy behind how I help clients plan for retirement comes from the teachings of Mitch Anthony. I've been inspired by Mitch since I was in high school. Mitch is the author of many books, including The New Retirementality: Planning Your Life and Living Your Dreams at Any Age You Want. I've been following his work for decades, gifted his books dozens of times, and I'm honored to have a chance to interview him. Mitch joins the podcast today to discuss how he helps his clients find purpose in life as they plan for retirement, how changing attitudes toward aging has affected people in mindset, health, and longevity, and how to find a sustainable balance between vocation and vacation - no matter what stage of life you're in. Ep 73073: How To Plan for Healthcare Costs in Retirement with Dr. Katy Votava
At some point in almost every single client meeting, we get asked how much health insurance is going to cost, what Medicare costs, how to prepare for long-term care expenses, what to budget for, and what additional coverage they should get. Dr. Robert Delamontagne is a leading expert on the psychological aspects of retirement. He's the author of the Retiring Mind series of books, in which he helps people manage the negative psychological effects they experience after retiring. In today's episode of the podcast, we're digging deep into two books in the series.
