This is a poem written by my previously-Christian-self as she was grieving deeply the lack of Mother God and Goddess in her church, and the realization that there was complete permeation of patriarchy, harmful to women, throughout the church I once loved and deeply trusted.

Five Famines of the FeminineĀ

I once walked the streetsĀ

That Jesus did sweep

He was calling his disciples;

Calling for his sheepĀ

I followed where they walked,

And I heard what they did speak:

They said, ā€œThere’s twelve apostlesā€,

I said, ā€œNo, there are thirteenā€¦ā€¦ā€

First famine of the Feminine:

No Mary Magdalene.

—-

I went to church on Sunday,

I took the Sacrament.

I sat with all my babies,Ā

The Bible in my hand.

I opened to the pagesĀ

Seeking God to lead,Ā

But all I found were verses

Subjugating me:

ā€œLet woman keep silent in church,

she is not permitted to speakā€Ā

Good old first Corinthians,

chapter fourteen.

Next famine of the feminine:

Unchecked Patriarchy.Ā

——

They told me to believeĀ

That Adam did make Eve,

when all humans on earthĀ

Woman did conceive…

I thought they could not lie,

Until the Voice InsideĀ

Told me that their storyĀ

Was unjust gendercide.Ā

Third famine of the feminine:

Denying women their power of creation.Ā

——

They told me I had choices,Ā

They told me I was free.Ā

They said my final judgementĀ

Was tween’ God and Me.Ā

But then they have insertedĀ

Men and authorityĀ

In place of my own conscienceĀ

And my Sovereignty.Ā

Fourth famine of the feminine:Ā

Line of Authority.Ā

——

They say there is a Mother

In Heaven; that she’s true.

But when we speak about her,

They hush us at the pew.

They say she is too sacred;

To pure to speak her name—

I say that I am starving

In this drought of Feminine. Ā

——

This daughter wants her MotherĀ

Included in the prayerĀ

This daughter wants her MotherĀ

Represented fair.Ā

I don’t want to have to piece HerĀ

Like a puzzled game of Clue!

I want to Speak about herĀ

Like men their Father do.Ā

The problem with this famineĀ

of the Feminine DivineĀ

Is that women have to leave

parts of themselves behind.Ā

How can they be expressedĀ

As only women can,

When the only God that’s spokenĀ

Is one that is a Man?

This buries parts of women,Ā

it buries them alive.Ā

Don’t ask us to abandon

The feminine inside.Ā

How can I, as a woman,

How can I choose to stayĀ

When as I am here staying,Ā

I give parts of me away?
