This is a poem written by my previously-Christian-self as she was grieving deeply the lack of Mother God and Goddess in her church, and the realization that there was complete permeation of patriarchy, harmful to women, throughout the church I once loved and deeply trusted. 9.28.23 © Elizabeth Langston, 2024 Five Famines of the Feminine I once walked the streets That Jesus did sweep He was calling his disciples; Calling for his sheep I followed where they walked, And I heard what they did speak: They said, “There’s twelve apostles”, I said, “No, there are thirteen……” First famine of the Feminine: No Mary Magdalene. —- I went to church on Sunday, I took the Sacrament. I sat with all my babies, The Bible in my hand. I opened to the pages Seeking God to lead, But all I found were verses Subjugating me: “Let woman keep silent in church, she is not permitted to speak” Good old first Corinthians, chapter fourteen. Next famine of the feminine: Unchecked Patriarchy. —— They told me to believe That Adam did make Eve, when all humans on earth Woman did conceive… I thought they could not lie, Until the Voice Inside Told me that their story Was unjust gendercide. Third famine of the feminine: Denying women their power of creation. —— They told me I had choices, They told me I was free. They said my final judgement Was tween’ God and Me. But then they have inserted Men and authority In place of my own conscience And my Sovereignty. Fourth famine of the feminine: Line of Authority. —— They say there is a Mother In Heaven; that she’s true. But when we speak about her, They hush us at the pew. They say she is too sacred; To pure to speak her name— I say that I am starving In this drought of Feminine. —— This daughter wants her Mother Included in the prayer This daughter wants her Mother Represented fair. I don’t want to have to piece Her Like a puzzled game of Clue! I want to Speak about her Like men their Father do. The problem with this famine of the Feminine Divine Is that women have to leave parts of themselves behind. How can they be expressed As only women can, When the only God that’s spoken Is one that is a Man? This buries parts of women, it buries them alive. Don’t ask us to abandon The feminine inside. Dear Patriarchy By Elizabeth Langston I wanted to be a nice girl Until I learned that you killed my sisters I enjoyed being a quiet girl Until I learned that you took their voices I wanted to be a compliant healer Until I learned that you overtook women’s healing arts I wanted to turn the other cheek Until I saw so many women hurting and frozen under your grip, I couldn’t look away. I wanted to be a domestic woman, Until I learned my feminine ancestors were domesticated. I wanted to be a clean woman Until I realized my sensuality is Holy. I didn’t want to disrupt anything Until I learned how disrupted my matriarchal line has been I was willing to do what you told me Until I was shown my Inner Temple and Authority I didn’t want to be disobedient Until I realized that disobedient women are behind some of the greatest freedoms we know today— I tried. I tried to stay out of the way. I did. I cleared myself of all magic and powerful yearnings I dedicated my Self to domestic identity But then the Goddess came to me... She came into my home full of pregnancy and babies And She wrecked into my Mind. She stole all my perfectly stacked identities And she whispered to me while I slept, “You are Wild.” When I awoke one day from Motherhood, I saw: this is not all of me. I felt the Missing of my Pieces. Depression ensued. (Depression is the Initiation of the Goddess.) –There were ambulances There were new homes and letting go of old friends There was darkness, Then a splash, And a Rebirth Of Me. Elizabeth. Priestess of the Cave Awakener of Women On Mission for the Goddess To Heal the Feminine in All Beings. —- I slaved for you in religious callings. And Now, I demand that my Women be set free. I am opening their cages I am unclipping their magic wings They are unfurling their beauty and sexual selves They are showing their shoulders. – I am torturing those organizations who tortured Woman Who stuffed her wild parts so far back into Her psyche, the collective ‘She’ almost forgot them. But I won’t let the women forget. ‘Woman’ may be Endangered, but she cannot and will not be Extinct. Because Woman is a heartbeat, a living thing She is alive inside every woman And the Goddess is awakening Woman, the full spectrum of woman, Through visions, dreams, night wakings, depression, havoc and chaos Women are being Reborn into Feminine Ways. — We call our Pagan ancestors up from their graves To teach us of their ways. I Hear the Goddess Coming I hear the Goddess coming She is brooding in the winds She is in the mists of ocean Taking form: The Feminine She callls into the winters Gathers women like they’re sheep She bands our forms together Sacred oath made in bare feet She calls us from within our chests Like fire her voice is hot Her message quakes with chaos Listen or you’ll rot: “I am clawing through the darkness” “I am swarming through the seas, I am calling up my witches Bringing bad men to their knees I am ripping open justice I’m unspoiling Liberty For the ones who have been honest In their searching and their pleas I have heard cries long enough [Of women] caged with broken wings I’m unlocking all their powers And sacred earth codings . You won’t see me; I’m in darkness Huddled up for far too long But I’m awakening my witches— To the woods! Let’s sing our songs!” There’s no reason,” I hear them saying “There’s no reason to be mean” “Just be peaceful” I hear them calling Just be peaceful and be clean.” But how my anger rises when denial they do bring And how my rage ignites when they say I’m being mean For they stripped us of our wildness They ripped it from our seams They have stolen our libations Crushed with Christianity So I’ll scour this earth’s surface for the Magic that’s still there, And I’ll conjure up my queens and let their songs ring in the air For those that want us quiet Need to know this one thing: The Feminine brings redemption It is Her that this world needs!!” The Feminine does not desire To take over everything, The Feminine seeks Balance In restoring those lost things.
