90. Is Empathy Weakness?

In this episode I address whether or not I believe empathy is a sign of weakness. Or "weak parenting." Elon Musk has been in the news saying "the fundamental weakness of western civilization is Empathy." However I think it's one of the biggest strengths for humanity. When we can SEE each other, when we can seek to understand each other we are in fact stronger. Both personally and as a nation. I invite you to listen and think about how you were shown empathy as a child and how that's impacted your ability to show empathy as a parent. And if you're ready to start shifting towards empathy. 89. 5 Reasons Why Gentle Parenting ISN'T Working For You

In this episode I share the 5 reasons I see that gentle parenting isn't working for you. These are what I'm seeing across comments, questions I get asked weekly, my client's perspectives and community members. And I want to acknowledge that it's hard to transition from one parenting style to another. Especially one that forces us to look at our own stuff vs. focus on our children's behavior. I hope this brings some insights and of course please connect with me if you are called to work together. I would really love to connect with you and see how coaching or my programs could be a support for this recurring pattern. Please reach out and we can connect on a free call. 88. Understanding your child's brain-based differences

This episode is a wonderful conversation discussing how we as parents can shift our focus, our reactivity and the lens in which we view our children with brain-based differences. You get to hear from expert Eileen Devine on how she approaches parenting frustrating behaviors from a skill deficiency lens vs an intentional defiant lens. I hope you enjoy this conversation and feel hopeful in how we can start to shift as parents with our children whose brains function differently. Bio: Eileen Devine is a licensed clinical social worker and founder of Brain First Parenting. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and two teenage children, one of whom lives with a serious brain-based difference. She has over 20 years of clinical experience and for the last dozen of those years, has focused solely on supporting parents who have kids with neurobehavioral conditions. In addition to her clinical work with parents, she facilitates dozens of workshops and trainings each year for parents, teachers, and mental health professionals and is a trainer for the Center for Adoption Support and Education's (C.A.S.E.) accredited Training for Adoption Competency (TAC) Program, where she instructs other clinicians across the state of Oregon on what it means to be an adoption and foster competent therapist. https://www.eileendevine.com/ FREE GUIDES! 87. IG Question - My Toddler is Using His Weight Against Me!

This episode answers a question I got over on Instagram. If you don't follow me there please connect at @ ResponseABLEparenting This parent was really struggling with their toddler falling on the ground and using their weight against them in the middle of a tantrum. We've all been there, when we say no to something and our toddler all the sudden goes completely dead weight and falls to the ground in a full meltdown. This can be very triggering, embarassing and frustrating. I share how we can soften in these moments by understanding our children's developmental abilities and the steps I would take to move through this moment and maintain connection as well as teach them the behavior I would like to see going forward. I hope this episode is supportive and gives you some insights into managing these really annoying tantrums we experience throughout our kid's development. 85. Parenting with Grief

This is a very special episode! I am taking part in the Podcasthon Non-Profit Initiative where over 1500 podcasters are bringing awareness to a charity and organization that means something to them. I am honoring the Madd Ox Foundation. It's a foundation to bring awareness to stillbirths as well as provide resources to families (especially mothers) who have recently experienced a stillbirth. https://www.maddox-foundation.org/ In this episode I share my story of losing my son Jackson in 2019. I share about how I moved through grief, what I've learned from this experience and the many ways I began to understand what happened and how to live with grief as opposed to fighting it at all costs. No matter if you've lost a child or a loved one or something very special to you, grief can impact our parenting in very negative ways. 83. Realistically what this work looks like

It's easy to think that everyone else has it figured out as a parent. That you are the only one failing and have totally messed up your kid. That every time you yell or threaten you have to go back to the drawing board and start completely over. In this episode I share a rough moment with my son. I share how I fell back into old patterns and how I totally forgot to use every skill at my fingertips. But then I share how this work took this moment from what would have been hours down to under ½ an hour from start to finish. And how we ended up learning so much from this fight that we now know exactly what we both need to work on. I share exactly what I did to turn the sinking ship around and the outcome of that. How this work has truly changed the trajectory of our relationship.\ Podcast episodes referenced: Episode 74: The Stories We Tell Ourselves https://www.responseableparenting.com/podcast/ep-74-the-stories-we-tell-ourselves FREE GUIDES! 82. Stop looking to your kids to validate your parenting

In this week's episode I share a subtle thing I've noticed across all the parents I work with. A little hiccup that keeps us stuck, that keeps us in a frustrated power loop and draws us back into conflict with our kids. It's this longing and almost expectation that our kids are going to validate our hard work as parents. We've done so much work, we're putting in a tremendous amount of effort and we still get yelled at, we still get pushback, we still get their aggression. It can feel so defeating and frustrating. It can make us question whether what we are doing as parents is the right thing for our kids. And it makes it 10x easier to revert back to the old patterns that we grew up with: yelling, shaming, threatening etc. I'm excited for you to listen and please reach out if you had an "ah ha" in this episode! 81. How curiosity builds respect

I get a lot of haters in my comments. And while that comes with the territory and seems to be the cultural norm these days, I have to believe we can speak to each other differently. And while I'm not a saint, and clap back at times, I do try to practice what I preach. And that is to get curious as to why the person is saying what they're saying. You'll see me write "I'm curious…" to start many of my responses. In this episode I share how curiosity is such an overlooked yet potent tool for fostering respect. I break down how this models respect, teaches conflict management, emotional intelligence, regulates the nervous system and creates a deep level of trust, safety and … you guessed it, respect. 80. Mama Trauma

First off, shout out to you mama for tackling cycle breaking and doing the work. This is NOT easy stuff and I am here to cheer you on. I think it's very easy to point the finger to our parents (especially our moms) and say "because of the way she modeled things I am 'x'" or "the way she did this messed me up." YES all of that is your experience and 100% valid. I am not taking that away from you. AND, we have choice. We have a choice in how we choose to move forward with what we've experienced in our past. 78. The OTHER "F" Word…Friends

This episode explores friendships. My son had a run in with his "best friend" and he was essentially told "you're not my friend." So wounded and so confused he felt blindsided by this. He admires this kid so much and truthfully this kid is awesome. I totally get why my son wants to be his bestie. But this kid already has a bestie who loves all the same things he loves, is lock step with this kid and it shows. My son shares a few similar interests but not a lot. When I was able to share the "Capital F" and "Lowercase f" framework with him it allowed him to see that his worth wasn't dependent on the approval of this one kid. And that true friendship doesn't require constantly proving yourself, fear that they're going to ditch you any second, or any type of coercion to be friends. Real "Capital F" friends like you for you. They accept you, they enjoy being with you and they are willing to work on the challenging things. I hope this supports you when you run into the inevitable friendship challenges. (note: this was not my concept. I cannot remember where I heard this so if you know, please send me a message and I'll source them for credit). FREE GUIDES! 77. Parenting with External Stress

This is possibly the most important episode I've ever made. After experiencing the unrelenting stress of fires, arsonists, hurricane force winds + fire was almost too much for the human body to bear witness too. Most everyone in LA right now is walking around as a zombie. We are in "low power mode" and from what I've heard from almost everyone, "we're just putting one foot in front of the other." Many of us know at least 1 person who lost everything. Many of us know 20+ people who only have the clothes they evacuated in. It's devastating. However, the focus of this episode is not the fires. The focus of this episode is the incredible wisdom we hold in our bodies that has been biologically primed to keep us safe when our stress levels surpass our threshold. And unfortunately for every parent in America today, that threshold is maxing out regularly. So this episode focuses on understanding WHY our bodies do what they do. And how you can actively participate in what your body is doing so you can support yourself and your goals as a parent even further. Please feel free to reach out to me, share this with a friend and once again, thank you for being here. 76. My son's passing - and the lessons I continue to learn

Trigger Warning. This episode is about my son who was stillborn in 2019. I share a few moments that I experienced in the hospital. If you have lost a child, experienced a stillbirth or miscarriage, please be gentle in your listening. My hope is that you find comfort in my story, that you are not alone. And that we can continue to heal together. My son Jackson would have been 6 years old this year. And on his 6th birthday (1/5/2025) I connected the dots to a major lesson from that experience to where I struggle as a parent still today. I think this is a great way to reframe our goals as parents in 2025 and how to approach this whole thing in a new way. I invite you to listen, to cry, to be WITH the hard feelings. And to connect with me afterwards. Sending you so much love as we embark on a new year together. FREE GUIDES! 75. What I learned from my son knocking out his teeth

In this episode, I share a personal story about my four-year-old son's traumatic accident during a holiday recital rehearsal, where he severely injured several teeth. I reflect on his resilience, the lessons we've learned, and the importance of connection, asking for help, grounding tools, and letting go of control as a parent. Let's talk about navigating trauma, finding joy in adversity, and responding with intention. FREE GUIDES! 72. One of THE hardest cycles to break

I didn't think I'd share this personal story from my Thanksgiving break but I felt like it really hit home for me on my journey of parenting as well as self discovery. So I invite you to take a listen, and possibly see yourself in my story. We are so deeply intertwined with all of our "shoulds" that we've lost a large part of ourselves. My goal in everything I do as a coach is to help us figure out how to come back to ourselves so we can ultimately show up the way we truly want to show up. We've taken on more in this life than our nervous systems can handle. And I'm hoping that through this work we can soothe and comfort that out of wack nervous system. I know it's possible because I see the bread crumbs and the small wins all the time through this practice. I am excited to have you along on this journey and I hope to connect with you even more. 67. Control is the Opposite of Trust

In this episode I talk about the difference between control and trust. And how we have been so conditioned to control the process, control the outcome, control our children's behavior. Because left to their own devices things haven't gone well in the past. But the more we control, the less time they have to practice, to fill up their own control bucket, to show us through their actions how capable they truly are. I offer a new way of thinking about control and some guidance on how to slowly release the reins and give your children the opportunity to show how much they care about this relationship as well. 65. Control Issues

*Trigger warning at minute marker 7:30 I share a story of my stillbirth.* In this episode I share a very vulnerable and tender moment I had with my strong willed kid. He did something impulsively that pushed on all my buttons. And instead of having a corrective conversation we ended up having one of the most honest and connective moments. I was able to recognize that my desire to control his behavior is rooted in a deep fear that I will lose him just like I lost his brother. My control and perfectionism have morphed and are now showing up as protection. This was a beautiful moment between us and we were able to really see each other after this conversation. 64. Feeling Your Feelings is a Radical Act

The phrase "feel your feelings" has become this negative trope used to make parents, who are really trying to do things differently, feel weak and shameful about their choices. I hear all the time "Oh you're one of THOSE parents who allow feelings…" As if thats a BAD THING!? In this week's episode I talk about how allowing both yourself and your child to feel your feelings (yes even the "bad" ones) is a radical act. And why it should be the focus of all interpersonal relationships, not just parenting! 63. You Need to Change So I Can Feel Better

In this episode we explore a phrase my therapist told me back in 2020. "You need to change in order for ME to feel better." I feel like this phrase helped me see every situation differently. I began to understand my responsibility in each relationship. What I brought to the dynamic that was either healthy or not. And I was able to really start a journey of self-discovery and accountability to show up the way I wanted to in each interaction. If this resonates with you and you're looking to do this work alongside a coach I would be honored to talk with you. You can DM me on Instagram @ ResponseABLEParenting or email me at [email protected] This work matters so much, not just to benefit your children. 60. Are You in a Relationship with Your Child's Behavior?

"When I'm in a relationship with his behaviors there is less for me to see and love and adore and protect. But when I put that down, it opens my eyes to all the things that make him special, unique that I love and want to protect in him!" - Amanda Doyle, We Can Do Hard Things This quote hit me hard. It reminded me of the years I had invested into removing unwanted behavior and how I was exclusively focused on the behavior, not the child in front of me. In this episode I talk about how we can begin to separate the behavior from our child. And steps we can take as their safe caregiver to understand their behavior more clearly and how we can get curious and connect with them in order to fall back in love and connection with our child vs. focus only on their behavior. 59. Why This is SO Important to Teach Our Sons

I made a post a few weeks ago about my son negotiating with me in the pool for more pool time. I walked through the scenario and shared THE WIN of how he held his end of the agreement EVEN THOUGH he had an impulse to jump back in. Since that post I've received 100s of messages from mostly men talking about how I should have solved that problem with physical violence against my son. They got dark. Very dark. And in this episode I address that. The comments show a society of adult men who were not taught how to deal with frustration. Men who were not taught how to deal with the discomfort from another person's perspective. And a generation of men who were taught that if they don't get their way, if someone pushes back even slightly, that the way to maintain your position of power is violence. In this episode I share why it is so important to teach all children how to deal with frustration but specifically our sons. Who are being raised with the same outdated tropes that it's not manly to cry, to feel, to have emotions. This has to end. If you would like to work with me and join me in my mission to support the next generation in a better way, please reach out to me. 58. Boundaries in Action

Teaching our kids the ways of the world from value based boundaries vs. consequences and yelling is NOT easy. In fact, it's way harder. But it is worth every bit of effort. In this episode I share a personal story of watching my son understand the boundaries and how he put it into practice while playing a game with his brother. My hope in sharing this is to give you a beacon of hope. This is a moment I will hold onto forever as I remember that this part of him is alive and well inside, I just need to nurture it more and continue giving him the opportunity to practice. 52. Consequences vs. Boundaries - How to teach appropriate behavior without punishments

I have said many times that threats, bribes, consequences and punishments don't work very well. And I get A LOT of feedback (nice way to say nasty comments 😉) in my feed about how these are necessary to teach our kids how to be "real world ready." And how else are they going to learn how to act appropriately if they don't have punishments when they act out of turn? This episode addresses just that! I share in this episode how I've been able to remove threats, bribes, punishments and imposed consequences AND how I've been able to teach the lessons, instill the values and teach my kids how to act appropriately without all of that! I share my system of value based boundaries and how our "bubble" gets bigger and smaller based on their abilities to live inside these values. 51. My 2 paths: Reactive or Responsive

I share a vulnerable moment in time for me in this episode. My oldest son and I are not jiving and the frustration is level 10 what seems like most of the day…and most days. I can do all the work in the world and sometimes it's a simple visual that helps me in moments of conflict, chaos and challenge. We often find ourselves facing two paths in parenting. One is so incredibly easy to take because we've been there so so so many times. It's easy because our neural pathways are strong and deep and the pattern has been repeated so many times. But it doesn't feel right and many times we are simply at a crossroads, unsure of how to handle the situation. This episode is about that crossroads. FREE GUIDES! 48. Client Interview: How Understanding Her Strong-Willed Child has Transformed her Life Forever

I am so excited for you to hear from Katelynn. Katelynn is a mom to a very strong-willed 3.5 year old. When she and I first started coaching her daughter was having several meltdowns a day that lasted for a minimum of an hour and sometimes stretched closer to 2. Katelynn felt like she was failing, she was overwhelmed with all the advice she was seeing on her feed and just needed relief. She looked at coaching with me as a one stop shop to get all of the support, tools and resources she needed to succeed in parenting. What she got was a total transformation of not only her parenting but of her belief in self, communication style and so much more. You'll hear from Katelynn about what our time together coaching looked like and her ah-ha moments. I am excited for you to listen! 47. Progression of Low Self Worth Loops

In this episode, I break down my progression of low self-worth loops that began in childhood and share how that has affected my parenting. This is not a bashing session on my parents, rather it's a deeper understanding of how we, as kids, can start to internally code these really repetitive interactions with our parents. When there is shame, constant correction, lectures, etc. it's very easy to internalize these moments as "bad" or "wrong" and therefore we begin to view ourselves as "bad" or "wrong." When our kid's way of expressing themselves doesn't match our expectations we have to be very careful with how we step in to correct. Our child might morph into the "behaved" child we want to see, but what is going on for them internally? What stories are they telling themselves about their character, their abilities, their level of self-worth? One of the greatest lessons I'm learning as a parent is that even if we are coming to parenting with the best of intentions, we need to make sure we attune to and match our child's way of expressing thoughts and feelings. We need to meet them where THEY are at, verses expect them to rise to our level. Additionally I share a tool that I use myself and that my clients use in order to get more clarity and context around why we are so incredibly triggered at certain times. ________________________ FREE GUIDES! 46. How to Thrive Even With Power Struggles

In this episode, I give you a framework to follow when you find yourself stuck in a power struggle with your kids. This isn't a rigid script to follow, rather a framework to assist you in some of the most frustrating moments in parenting. When our wants collide with our child's wants - we end up feeling resistance. WE understand that feeling and we might have some coping strategies, but more often than not we feel like we have to justify, explain or force our way to end it. I think what often happens is we go to extremes. We either give into their resistance or we go hard and power over to get what needs to get done, done. One of the smartest things we can do as parents is just to drop our side of the power struggle. That means we just don't take the bait and jump into the boxing ring with our kids. 1: Drop our side of the power struggle 2: Focus on our nervous system: https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.responseableparenting.com/podcast/ep-44-what-are-grounding-techniques&sa=D&source=docs&ust=1718637147858375&usg=AOvVaw21L8fsF9X2VC2lUAQi9rqF 3: Make a statement 4: Give them a choice When we follow this framework everyone wins. We hold our boundary, what needs to happen gets done, our child feels validated and seen and they have a bit of control of how it looks (even if it's not their ideal version). FREE GUIDES!
