When they heard this, they praised God. Then they said to Paul: “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law. They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.” The next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he went to the temple to give notice of the date when the days of purification would end and the offering would be made for each of them.

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” What God is up to in the world is good news for us. Instead, the real challenge is for God to convince us that we are already loved. What God is up to in the world is good news for us. God gives. This is good news for us.

Circumcision vs. Grace Acts | Week 10 July 28,2019 | Adam Barnett -- Acts 15:1-5 NIV Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question. The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them. Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the Law of Moses.” Acts 2:21 NIV Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Acts 15:6-11 NIV The apostles and elders met to consider this question. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.” Acts 11:17 NIV So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God? Jesus isn’t a step on the way to salvation. Jesus is the way to salvation. Acts 15:16-18 NIV After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, that the remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things that have been known for ages. Acts 15:19 NIV It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Don’t make it difficult for anyone to turn to God. Results of the Council at Jerusalem The unity of the church was upheld. Existing Gentile churches were encouraged. The future of the church was to be inclusive. The gospel of divine grace was reaffirmed. Unless I also ___, I am not saved.

Paul & Barnabas On The Road Acts | Week 9 July 21, 2019 | Adam Barnett -- Message of Repentance Momentum from Persecution Motivation from Rejection Message of Repentance Acts 13:24 NIV Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. When you minimize the problem, you cheapen the solution. Momentum from Persecution Acts 14:22b NIV “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” Despite persecution and opposition, the gospel was spreading. Acts 11:19-20 [paraphrase] Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen...went to Antioch and told the Greeks the good news about the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord! Despite...and BECAUSE of persecution and opposition, the gospel was spreading. Motivation from Rejection Acts 13:44-50 NIV On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him. Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. For this is what the Lord has commanded us: “‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. So they shook the dust off their feet as a warning to them and went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Acts 14:1-3 NIV At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders. The reactions of people—acceptance or rejection—cannot be the basis of our joy, or our obedience. Romans 10:14-15 [paraphrase] But how can Joe call on Jesus to save him unless he believes in him? And how can _____ believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can ____ hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

Acts 9:31 NIV Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers. oikodoméō GOD moves. PEOPLE talk about it. The CHURCH grows. Salvation through Christ is not just for Israel but for all people. Acts 10:9-22 NIV About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate. They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you. So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.” Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?” The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” Keep it all about Jesus. Acts 10:33b NIV “Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.” Acts 10:43 NIV All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. We need to strive to be better gardeners.

Be Bold Acts | Week 7 July 7, 2019 | Wopsle -- Acts 8:1 NIV And Saul approved of their killing him. Acts 8:26-31 NIV Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. When God says to go, we should go. Acts 8:38-39 NIV And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. Acts 9:1 NIV Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. Acts 9:10-15 NIV In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. Sometimes boldness means speaking out. Sometimes boldness means stepping out. 1 Corinthians 3:6 NIV I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. We need to strive to be better gardeners.

And now you have betrayed and murdered him. Acts 8:1 NIV And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. The Gospel advanced because of his suffering and sacrifice. Stephen showed us how to live—and how to die. Stephen showed us how to love our enemies. We should beware making an idol of the "good life"

Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. Acts 4:8-12 NIV Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” They were guilty in crucifying Jesus. Jesus rose from the dead. The purposes of God will not be stopped. Jesus is the one and only way of salvation. Acts 5:14-16 NIV Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.” Acts 5:27-28 NIV The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.” Acts 5:29-32 NIV Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings! The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” Acts 5:41-42 NIV The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. Boldness: not hesitating or fearful in the face of actual or possible danger; courageous and daring Boldness: an undeniable sign of the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit!

We no longer believe that what we are doing is leading to the goal that we desired in the first place. The lesson is persistence: don’t give up. I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” The parable is not about persistence; it’s about the character of God. Faithful prayer is not so much about what or how we pray; it’s about knowing the one to whom we pray.

Stretch forth your hand to me and receive me, as you welcomed the returning prodigal, the repentant thief, the woman who wept at your feet, and even Peter who had denied you. We all are. 2 Samuel 7:1-16 NIV After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.” Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.” But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying: “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’” We are pilgrim people. To be a pilgrim is to realize what we do is not actually about us—it’s for those who don’t know God—and for the generations to come. For a follower of Jesus, the only right obsession is the Kingdom of God.

And all the people went to their homes. 2 Samuel 6:20-23 NIV When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!” David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.” And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death. David moved beyond work…to worship. 1 | Worship is our reckless response to God’s love. 2 | Worship is for an audience of one. Worship like Jesus is watching you. No one else. 3 | Worship is our all-encompassing identity.

You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. He calls them to remember. They must experience peace themselves before they can give it away. Ephesians 2:13-14 NLT But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ. For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. He gives the but now reversal. Hostility tears people apart… Peace tears down walls of hostility. Ephesians 2:15-18 NLT He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. He unveils God’s reorientation package. One new humanity in place of two. Boolean Algebra 1 + 1 = 1 The closer we move toward God setting all things right in the world, the farther we should move away from Us vs. Them mindsets. Colossians 3:15 NIV Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. We invite the peace of Christ into our own lives. We major on the major and minor on the minors. We promote learning and discussion about how God wants us to respond to the needs for peace in our world.
