Ep 104The Island of the Dead 03: Faber

E

In June 1942 the 3rd fighter group of the 2nd fighter wing of the Luftwaffe was scrambled to intercept a force of six returning A-20 Havoc bombers. The bombers were escorted by the 310th, 312th and 313th squadron of the RAF, all manned by Czech pilots. The Luftwaffe was flying the brand new Focke-Wulf 190 and downed seven Spitfires, one in spectacular fashion when Oberleutnant Armin Faber, with only one cannon working, made an Immelmann turn in to the sun and shot down his pursuer head on. Faber however had become severely disoriented during the dogfight and separated from the rest of the squadron and mistook the Bristol Channel for the English Channel and ended up flying north instead of south, mistaking the south of Wales for France. Witnesses could hardly believe their eyes when seeing the German plane waggling its wings in a victory celebration and then landing on the training airfield at RAF Pembrey. This being a training airfield, not many weapons were available and duty pilot Sergeant Jeffreys had to jump up on the wing of the plane and take Faber prisoner with a flare gun. Ep 103Taroticum 03: Cat o' Nine Tails

E

The cat o’ nine tails is a whip with nine “claws”, knotted thongs of cotton cord, designed to lacerate the skin in parallel wounds. It was used for corporal punishment, for example in the Royal Navy, where flogging was regularly administered for drunkenness or striking an officer. These offenses could give you a dozen lashes whereas desertion, mutiny or theft could give you up to five hundred. In the case of the “offense” of sodomy the death penalty was normally administered, but an alternative to this was awarding one thousand lashes – something that carried a similar chance of survival. “Flogging around the fleet” was the severest form of flogging where the offender was rowed between the ships in port, being flogged at each ship. This continued over months and years until the sailor died. After having endured each round of punishment the sailor’s back was rinsed with seawater which was then mistakenly thought to help reduce the risk of infection. The expression “rubbing salt into his wounds” is said to come from this practice. We had the amazing opportunity to play the upcoming Nibiru - a sci-fi RPG of lost memories with its creator Federico Sohns as our GM. Nibiru is on Kickstarter now, check it out here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1459616119/nibiru-a-science-fiction-rpg-of-lost-memories Nibiru. A massive space station, submerged under the sea of debris orbiting the Star of Fomalhaut: A steel-clad vulture feeding of the corpse of a thousand unborn planets. The Skyless World, safeguarding a collection of enclosed city-states—civilizations that have endured for thousands of years. From the Core and the Antumbra, where the world's benign and all is light, through the Penumbra and the Umbra beyond, where light ends, and the station's artificial gravity crushes all. In the far corners of this outlandish place, a group of amnesiacs wanders through the land. Theirs are the tales of loss, struggle and remembrance. Theirs are the stories you will tell. Ep 101Curse of Strahd 35: R.U.R

E

In Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti, a play from 1920 by Karel Capek, we are introduced to the idea of artificial people called roboti that are used as workers. The R.U.R factory makes these roboti from synthetic flesh and blood, even enabling them to think for themselves and be mistaken for human. The word "robot", especially its use in sci-fi, come from these roboti. As has become the pattern for most western stories involving robots these creatures end up rebelling against their human masters and end up wiping out the human race. Robots as a form of hubris by humans playing god, and being used as a warning against that, is in stark contrast to for example Japanese stories about robots where they are frequently seen as heroes or saviors rather than threats. Ep 100The Island of the Dead 02: Champawat

E

In the beginning of the 1900’s the villagers in Rupal in western Nepal were being routinely attacked and eaten by a Bengal tigress. The attacks happened in broad daylight and life across the region became paralyzed as men refused to leave their huts for fear of the attacks. Hunters and soldiers were sent after the tiger and managed to chase her into India, where she began her killing yet again. When finally shot in 1907 it was estimated that she had killed 436 people. Ep 99Taroticum 02: The Strand

E

The Strand was a monthly magazine published from 1891 to 1950 featuring fiction, illustrations and puzzles. At its peak it sold half a million copies every month. Sir Athur Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes began its life in The Strand through the serialization of “The Hounds of Baskervilles” and it was during that time the magazine reached its peak in sales. Other contributors included Rudyard Kipling, Winston Churchill and even Queen Victoria herself. Ep 98Curse of Strahd 34: Earl of Cornwall

E

Piers Gaveston was a nobleman, earl of Cornwall and favorite of King Edward II of England. The two were like brothers, inseparable and the king relied upon Gaveston as a sort of deputy, although he had no such official title. The two were even so close that rumors began to fly about them being lovers, something that later chroniclers have reinforced. This, and more importantly Gaveston’s exclusive access to the king’s patronage, led the king to be pressured by the nobility in to sending Gaveston away in exile a total of three times. The final time Gaveston was told that he would be branded an outlaw if he returned, and when he still did he was hunted down and murdered by a group of nobles. Ep 95Curse of Strahd 33: The Hussite Wars

E

In 1402 the Bohemian priest and scholar Jan Hus denounced the Catholic Church as corrupt and began preaching about reformation of the church in the land. The people listened as the church was indeed corrupt and so many, especially Czech’s, supported this cause that the pope ultimately had to declare a crusade against these “Hussites” who had even had the gall to occupy the castles of Prague. Using modern weaponry like hand cannons and well thought out battle tactics the Hussites defeated five consecutive crusades sent against them and became a sort of spontaneous military power in the region. The Hussite movement would ultimately fall from within when a moderate and radical faction, the Utraquists and Taborites, ended up fighting a war that weakened both sides, ultimately allowing Polish troops under Wladyslaw III to defeat the Hussites at the Battle of Grotniki in 1439. Ep 94Curse of Strahd 32: Blazer's Mill

E

The Lincoln County Regulators was a deputized posse that included the famous outlaws Billy the Kid and Charlie Bowdre. They had been sent to New Mexico to hunt down anyone involved in the murder of merchant and rancher John Tunstall. A buffalo hunter called Buckshot Roberts had been implicated and caught the interest of the Regulators and on April 4th 1878 he ended up in a standoff with the Regulators, having barricaded himself in a building owned by the dentist Joseph H. Blazer. Impatient, the leader of the Regulators, Dick Brewer, decided to attack. A violent gunfight ensued with Buckshot Roberts managing to wound three of the Regulators, including shooting off George Coe’s trigger finger and knocking Billy the Kid senseless with the butt of his rifle. He was also shot in the gut himself though and seriously wounded. Dick Brewer tried to attack from the back of the house only to be hit in the eye. The Regulators were stunned by this turn of events and decided to retreat. Roberts died the next day and he and Brewer were buried side by side near the house that the “Gunfight at Blazer’s Mill” had centered around. Ep 93Curse of Strahd 31: Claíomh Solais

E

The Sword of Light is an object that appears in many Scottish and Irish folktales. In the tales the hero is usually set upon a quest to perform three tasks to win his bride and is aided by animal companions, supernatural beings and also very often the woman he wishes to marry. The blade is said to burn like a candle with a fiery blaze and is very often kept by a giant. This giant is usually invulnerable to conventional weapons and must be defeated through trickery or by attacking its Achilles heel. Oftentimes the secret of where to attack is given to the hero by his lady. The radiant sword has also been connected with Excalibur from Arthurian legend, a sword that was said to have blinded its enemies when it was first drawn. Ep 91Curse of Strahd 30: Skull-Face

E

Skull-Face is a novella written by Robert E. Howard in 1929 and was published in the ”Weird Tales” magazine. The main villain of the story, the eponymous Skull-Face, is a resurrected necromancer from Atlantis determined to awaken all of the remaining Atlanteans, sleeping in their submerged sarcophagi, and creating a new world order with them as the ruling elite. The hero of the story is Steve Costigan, a dope-fiend who has nightmares of Skull-Face and is unwittingly pulled into his web of intrigue. Skull-Face is an early example in fiction of wizards and sorcerers returning from the dead more powerful than they were before. The term that has come to be used for this kind of being is “Lich”. Ep 90Curse of Strahd 29: Garuda

E

The Garuda is a massive eagle-like creature, described as the king of the birds, that appears in Hinduism and Buddhism. Portrayed as the god Vishnu’s mount or as a dharma protector in Buddhism it seems as though the myth about this powerful bird predates both religions. Garuda can swiftly fly anywhere, appearing where it’s services as a protector are required. It is a sworn enemy of the serpent and is in various forms used in the state insignias of both India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia. The legend of Garuda has travelled west, morphing in to the middle eastern legend of the Roc; a similar eagle like creature that appears in “One Thousand and One Nights”. Ep 89Curse of Strahd 28: Terra Nova

E

In 1911 Captain Robert Scott led an expedition of adventurers that were dead set on being the first to reach the South Pole on Antarctica. They had received funding for the expedition from the public with the support of a government grant. The admiralty provided transportation and experienced seamen for the journey. It was supposed to be a heroic success proving to the world yet again the superiority of the British Empire. Hubris and arrogance was brought in great supply. The preparations for the expedition were a complete disaster with Scott opting against using dogs to pull the sleighs, which was a proven method, instead opting for horses. Horses were a much more romantic way to travel after all, more fitting for a gentleman. He also brought a specially built motorized sleigh. The man who had built the sleigh was supposed to join the journey but was told to stay behind last minute, meaning nobody could fix it when it eventually broke down. He also brought five men instead of the four he had planned for, and messed up his calculation of the rations on top of that meaning they brought way too little food. He also didn’t properly seal his fuel containers, in spite of having experienced that in a previous journey, making them leak and robbing the crew of the ability to cook and keep themselves warm. On top of all of this he only brought one navigator who wasn’t trained in reading latitudes. The expedition reached the South Pole, second after Amundsen’s expedition, missing them by 34 days. On the return journey they were unable to find their supply drops, due to their navigator having messed up the coordinates. All of the five men perished from the cold and starvation. Ep 88Curse of Strahd 27: Einstein-Rosen Bridge

E

A wormhole is a speculative structure that connects two points in space-time, either separated by vast distances or by time. Their existence is hypothesized based on a solution of Einstein’s field equations and a number of possible types of wormholes have been proposed to exist by different scientists. If we imagine space-time as a sheet of paper, and draw two separate dots on one side of the paper, far from each other, we can fold the paper; folding space-time, to connect the two and thus create a direct route. Schwarschild theorized that such wormholes would only allow for one-way travel, but Thorne proposed that using exotic matter one might be able to hold the “throat” of a wormhole open and allow for travel back and forth. Ep 86Curse of Strahd 26: Death Spiral

E

A shortcut in accounting is to book overhead costs based on sales volume of products rather than by activity the cost was related to. Through this, when analyzing profitability, high volume, successful products end up looking less profitable than they actually are, and low volume sellers inversely look significantly better for the profit & loss than they actually are. This then tends to cause the management of the company in question to discontinue the successful product, try to outsource the product in order to reduce overhead or increase the price in order to increase profit margin. All of these actions have the potential to kill the popularity of the product, thus forcing the accountant to again move overhead costs to the remaining top sellers, with exactly the same results for them. This is known as the “Death Spiral”. Ep 85Coriolis - Last Voyage of the Ghazali 03: Molossus

E

The Molossus is a now extinct breed of dogs that are believed to be the ancestors of today’s Mastiff-type dogs. Originally a sheep-herding dog used in ancient Epirus (today parts of Albania and Greece) these vicious and muscular dogs were described by the poet Grattius thus ”...when serious work has come, when bravery must be shown, and the impetuous War-gods calls in the utmost hazard, then you could not but admire the renowned Molossians so much”. The powerful dogs were used in Epirotan tribal wars and later also by the Roman Empire under Marcus Aurelius. The dogs were trained specifically for battle by the Romans and given spiked metal collars and mail armor. The Romans are even said to have gone so far as to arranging the dogs in attack formations before unleashing them upon their enemies. Ep 84Curse of Strahd 25: Tudós kocsis

E

The word “coach”, describing a covered horse-drawn carriage for passengers or mail, is derived from the name of the Hungarian town “Kocs” where the coach is believed to have been invented. Hungarian villages still today hold competitions for “Coachman of the Year” and the coachmen have even found their way in to Hungarian Folklore. In the stories the “Clever Coachman” appears out of the blue during the hero’s journey, inviting him to enter the coach. The coachman will then end up not taking the hero where he wants to go, rather taking him where he needs to be; thus making fortunate turns in the plot more plausible and making unexpected twists possible. Ep 83Coriolis - Last Voyage of the Ghazali 02: Suleiman

E

Under Suleiman the Magnificent, who ruled from 1522 to 1566, the Ottoman Empire reached its apex, conquering Belgrade and most of Hungary until finally being stopped at the gates of Vienna. The Ottoman fleets dominated the Mediterranean and reached as far the Indian Ocean. The empire also went through a golden age of culture and literature under Suleiman's competent watch. He went against tradition and married a Christian woman from his harem, made famous in the west as Roxelana and said to have had red hair. At the time of his death the Ottoman Empire dominated much of the Middle East and the North African coastline and had made Moldavia, Crimea, Transylvania and Wallachia into vassals of the Empire. Ep 82Curse of Strahd 24: Caroline Test

E

Striking at an enemy before they can strike against you is known as ”pre-emptive self-defense” and traditionally two conditions, known as the “Caroline test” need to be fulfilled to justify such an action. The "Caroline" was an American steamboat used to supply settlers rebelling against the British Colonial government in Canada in 1837. American sympathizers provided weapons and food to the rebels, effectively keeping them in a fight they would otherwise lose. The British decided that enough was enough and a force entered the United States during the night, set the boat ablaze and spectacularly sent it over the Niagara Falls. One American was killed in the operation. The British argued that this was simply self-defense because A) The threat was imminent. B) No peaceful alternatives existed. C) The action was proportional with a clear goal that it achieved. It has since become accepted as part of customary international law and was for example cited at the Nuremberg Tribunal. Ep 81Coriolis - Last Voyage of the Ghazali 01: Lacuna

E

Memories are believed to be stored in two separate parts of the brain, the hippocampus and the amygdala. While normal memories are stores in the hippocampus, the amygdala, which is an emotion center, is where memories created by traumatic events live. If you are the victim of violence and your brain and hippocampus has been damaged, this means you might not be able to clearly remember the person that has caused you that trauma. However, the memories stored in the amygdala would most likely make you feel uneasy if you ever met them again, although you would not be able to put your finger on why... Ep 80Curse of Strahd 23: Capacocha

E

The ”solemn sacrifice” was a sacrificial rite conducted by the Incas on the order of the Incan emperor to celebrate important events in the emperor's life or to prevent natural disasters. It was a human sacrifice done with the intention of sending humanity’s best to join their deities. To ensure that the souls given were pure, children were typically used for this purpose. Until the sacrifice would take place the chosen children were fed well to ensure they would be happy when the time came. During the sacrifice they were dressed in royal clothes and paraded around the four statues depicting the Creator, the Sun God, the Moon God and the Thunder God. The murder was done by a blow to the skull, strangulation or by making them intoxicated and then leaving them to lose consciousness on a mountaintop where the cold and low oxygen conditions would lead to death by hypothermia. Ep 78The One Ring: The Kin-strife

E

We have something special for you today. We have played the short adventure “The distressed husband” from the classic MERP module “The Kin-strife” using the rules from The One Ring by Cubicle 7. "The Kin-strife" is a module about the civil war in Gondor between traditionalists and loyalists that took place about 1600 years before the events in “Lord of the Rings”. “But Valacar far exceeded his father’s designs. He grew to love the Northern lands and people, and he married Vidumavi, daughter of Vidugavia…” “Therefore when Eldacar succeeded his father there was war in Gondor. But Eldacar did not prove easy to thrust from his heritage. To the lineage of Gondor he added the fearless spirit of the Northmen. He was handsome and valiant, and showed no sign of ageing more swiftly than his father. When the confederates led by the descendants of the kings rose against him, he opposed them to the end of his strength. At last he was besieged in Osgiliath, and held it long, until hunger and the greater forces of the rebels drove him out, leaving the city in flames. In that siege and burning the Tower of the Stone of Osgiliath was destroyed, and the palantir was lost in the waters.” Music by: Andreas Lundström and tracks from the compilation “Behind the canvas of time” by Cryo Chamber. Ep 77Curse of Strahd 22: Orcus

E

Orcus is a god of the underworld in Etruscan mythology. He is often portrayed as a blind, bestial, gigantic, tusk-faced monster who eats human flesh; similar to the Cyclops, and is said to be the punisher of broken oaths. Primarily worshiped in the remote countryside people continued worshiping him well in to the Middle Ages. His connection with the underworld has led to his name being connected with fairy tale monsters in popular fiction. Tolkien’s famous orcs for example have their name derived from Orcus. Another fairy tale monster whose name comes from Orcus are the Ogres. Large giant-like beasts, they are said to have inhabited the British isles before humans settled there. Ep 76Curse of Strahd 21: Damocles

E

At the tyrant Dionysius II of Syracuse’s court there was a courtier named Damocles. According to the story Damocles was flattering the king and telling him how great and fortunate a man he was to have so much authority and magnificence. The king seemed pleased and offered to switch places with Damocles for a day so that he could get a taste of that fortune himself. Damocles accepted and was sat down at the opulent throne surrounded by all the luxury the kingdom could offer. But Dionysius had arranged that a huge sword should hang above the throne, held only by a single hair of a horse’s tail, only a moment away from falling on Damocles and ending his life. Damocles saw this and begged the king to switch back as he no longer wanted to be so “fortunate”; having realized that with great fortune and power comes great danger. E

The Order of the Dragon was an order of nobles founded by the king of Hungary, Sigismund von Luxembourg, in 1408. Modeled on the orders from the Crusades, its purpose was to fight the enemies of Christianity in general and the Ottoman Empire in particular. Its members pledged to: “In company with the prelates, barons, and magnates of our kingdom, whom we invite to participate with us in this party, by reason of the sign and effigy of our pure inclination and intention to crush the pernicious deeds of the same perfidious Enemy, and of the followers of the ancient Dragon, and of the pagan knights, schismatics, and other nations of the Orthodox faith, and those envious of the Cross of Christ, and of our kingdoms, and of his holy and saving religion of faith, under the banner of the triumphant Cross of Christ...” One of its members was Vlad II Dracul, "Vlad the Dragon". Ep 74Curse of Strahd 19: Arachnid

E

In Greek mythology the woman Arachne was a very talented weaver, credited with inventing linen cloth and nets and whose son was said to have introduced the use of the spindle in wool manufacturing. These were incredible discoveries and according to the stories, such as the one by the Roman poet Ovid, Arachne was filled with hubris, boasting that her prowess as a weaver exceeded even that of the goddess Athena. Athena was incensed by this and set up a contest with Arachne to determine who truly was the most skilled. Athena’s weaving depicted other contests in which the gods had punished mortals that set themselves as equals to the gods, to show how wrong Arachne was to challenge the gods. Arachne’s weaving on the other hand depicted ways in which the gods had misled and abused mortals. Athena was enraged by this insult to the gods, and the fact that Arachne’s weaving was more beautiful than hers. She destroyed Arachne’s work and drove her to commit suicide through hanging. Athena cursed her saying “Live on then, and yet hang, condemned one, but, lest you are careless in future, this same condition is declared, in punishment, against your descendants, to the last generation!” The goddess then sprinkled Hecate’s herb on her “making Arachne's hair fall out. With it went her nose and ears, her head shrank to the smallest size, and her whole body became tiny. Her slender fingers stuck to her sides as legs, the rest is belly, from which she still spins a thread, and, as a spider, weaves her ancient web.” Campaign: “Curse of Strahd”, Dungeons & Dragons Music by: Metatron Omega, Flowers for Bodysnatchers & Wordclock Web: https://www.redmoonroleplaying.com iTunes: http://apple.co/2wTNqHx Android: http://bit.ly/2vSvwZi Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/RedMoonRoleplaying RSS: http://www.redmoonroleplaying.com/podcast?format=rss Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/RedMoonRoleplaying

Ep 73Coriolis: A Song for Jarouma 02

E

Here comes the conclusion to our first journey in Fria Ligan's Coriolis and the Third Horizon, as well as the end of this prologue to the campaign "Emissary Lost". Will the crew be able to repair the installations and get the data they need from each of the quadrants? Or will the violent storms in the atmosphere of Xene claim their shuttle and all aboard? "The hull groans from the stress as the shuttle descends into the growing storm. The passengers hold on tight as Xene’s hurricane winds hit the hull and steering jets, doing their best to push the shuttle back out into the dark void. The pilot is focused on the flight control screens. Interfering noise washes over the internal speakers as she bites down nervously on a piece of well-chewed tabak. – “We should be there now. Check the sensors for any sign of the beacons. I need coordinates NOW, or this ride will end up in flames!" E

Join us on a journey to the world of Free League’s Coriolis and space station FS-7, orbiting the gas giant Xene in the Kua system. Hjalmar plays the pilot Leila Hatami and Craig the technician Alam Dania, who are part of a team of researchers contracted to install and oversee an experiment known as the “Jarouma pattern”. They are still blissfully unaware of the roles they will play in events that will shake the Third Horizon to its foundations. "By the Icons, it looks like we have succeeded. Readouts from quadrant 2 and 3 are confirmed. Both frequencies align with the Jarouma pattern. Alam will attach the data dumps. But, we have grave news. The mission is in danger. Weather is getting worse, and we’ve run into several incidents during the mission. Two of our crew-members are hurt and simulations indicate that the shuttle may not hold up to the stress as we try to reach quadrant 4. We pray to the Icons that this message will get through..." Ep 71Curse of Strahd 18: Lychantrope

E

Werewolves are widespread in European folklore, with stories of men turning in to wolves going back to late antiquity. In Western Europe werewolves were often connected with shape-shifting sorcerers and witches who abducted children. During the European witch hunts large numbers of people, especially in France, were accused of being werewolves and burned at the stake for it. In Eastern Europe however it seems that some of the stories may have originated from Viking berserkers dressed in wolves’ hides, resistant to pain and fighting viciously to the end; not unlike the animal whose hide they were wearing. The stories there focused more on the superhuman speed and strength, such as in the tale of Vseslav the prince who ruled the town during the day and prowled in the guise of a wolf all across Belarus and Ukraine during the night. Gradually the stories of werewolves in Eastern Europe became intertwined with those of the vampires. E

In Ezekiel, the throne of God is said to be moved around on wheels: “The four wheels had rims and they had spokes, and their rims were full of eyes round about.” These wheels are called the “Orphanim”. Other texts, such as the first book of Enoch portray these Orphanim as a class of celestial beings, angels, listed alongside the Seraphim and the Cherubim. Ep 69Curse of Strahd 16: Prometheus

E

The story of Prometheus, the champion who stole fire from the gods to give to humanity, is a story about us as a species. It's about our efforts to improve our existence and not accepting things as they are. It's also a tragic story about overreach and unintended consequences for that ambition. The immortal Prometheus is ultimately punished by the gods and bound to a rock. Every day an eagle would come to eat his liver, only to have it grow back overnight; repeating the process the next day. The liver was thought to be the seat of human emotions, and similar to Mary Shelley's "Modern Prometheus", Victor Frankenstein, both men suffer greatly for their ambitions. In Frankenstein one of the final words of the protagonist is to "avoid ambition". But we wouldn't be human if we did... Zug Island is a man-made island in the river Rouge in the southern part of Detroit. It’s home to a large ironmaking industry with massive blast furnaces. Ore and coal is brought to the island via train and pig iron and coke shipped out. At its peak thousands of people worked there, today only a few hundred, mainly due to automatization and the decline in manufacturing throughout the rust belt. The ”Zug Island hum” are mysterious cyclical rumblings and vibrations that can be felt as far away eighty kilometers away. It is believed they are emanating from the iron-making facilities, but studies are inconclusive and the city has cancelled further investigations due to the general lack of funds. Ep 67Curse of Strahd 15: Traducianism

E

Traducianism is a Christian doctrine about the origins of the soul originally championed by scholars such as Tertullian. It holds that God created Adam’s soul but that all the souls created thereafter are actually generated naturally along with the body and derived from the individual’s parents. This is in opposition to the creationist view on souls which states that God creates each new individual soul. Traducianists argue that this does not make sense in relation to fundamental tenets such as the original sin. God created all things ”very good” but in order for the original sin to be transferred, the creationist view would require God to create sinful souls. They also argue that God’s creation is supposed to be finished, so how could he still be required to create new souls? Finally, in Genesis 6 there are stories of offspring with human bodies and demonic souls, resulting from the union of angels and humans. Surely God could not be responsible for having created those demonic souls? However, the creationist view is held firmly today within the Roman Catholic Church. It is in line with the churches’ stance against abortion and according to “The Catechism of the Catholic Church”, 366, “The Church teaches that every spiritual soul is created immediately by God – it is not ‘ produced’ by the parents”, thus helping the church to, in their view, solidify the personhood and sanctity of each embryo. Ep 66KULT: Divinity Lost - Oakwood Heights, Act II

E

Oakwood Heights is in the heavily industrialized southwestern part of Detroit. The neighborhood is relatively densely populated but also ranks as the most polluted in all of Michigan. The population has dropped by more than 20% since the year 2000 and is 75% African-American with almost 30% of all residents living below the poverty line. Most states have regulations regarding how close industries can be to residential areas, but not Michigan. The Marathon Petroleum Company is located right by the neighborhood and long-term residents, unsurprisingly, have higher levels of respiratory diseases and cancer. In 2010 the Detroit Free Press reported this about the area “For the past six months, a rain of mysterious sparkly dust of unknown origin has landed on their homes and gardens. Odd odors and clouds of dark particles float overhead”. Ep 65Curse of Strahd 14: Westinghoused

E

Electrocution is a portmanteau of” electro” and “execution” and was originally coined to describe electrical execution through the electric chair. At the time the “war of currents” between Thomas Edison’s direct current (DC) and George Westinghouse’s alternating current (AC) was at its peak. Edison and anti-AC activist Harold Brown had managed to get AC to be selected for powering the chair and were now portraying it as the “executioner’s current”. The New York Times, who was generally supportive of Edison, tried to introduce the word “Westinghoused” to describe the execution method and thus discredit AC. The war raged on with DC scoring many propaganda victories like this. However, AC was ultimately victorious, this after Thomas Edison had ended up sidelined in the new Edison General Electric company and he, and his dogmatic anti-AC stance, no longer kept the war going. Ep 64Tales from the Loop: Horror Movie Mayhem, Part 2 of 2

E

Moral panic was widespread fear and social concern of a, usually hitherto unknown, evil that threatened society and, preferably, innocent children. The fear was spread by ”moral entrepreneurs” as well as the mass media. Often it related to new phenomena that young people enjoyed, such as heavy metal music, roleplaying games or video nasties. Moral panic could also be generated targeting groups that were seen as threats to social norms in a community, outsiders like mods and rockers or the LGBT community. It’s good that we have gotten past this as a society… now it will never happen again. Ep 62Curse of Strahd 13: Heliophobia

E

In Bram Stoker’s "Dracula" the eponymous Count was weakened by sunlight, but it did not kill him. Trying to trace where the idea of vampires exploding in to a cloud of dust or catching on fire when in sunlight seems to lead to the 1922 movie Nosferatu. In the movie, Count Orlok needs to sleep by day as the sunlight would otherwise kill him. One theory goes that this element was introduced in order to differentiate the story somewhat from "Dracula" which it quite proudly stole most of it's plot from. The attempts at differentiating were not enough however and the movie company Prana Film was forced to declare bankruptcy after Florence Stoker, Bram’s widow and holder of the estate, sued the company for copyright infringement and won. E

Hamartia is a term used to describe turns of events in dramatic literature and usually refers to the protagonists erring or having a fatal flaw, setting off a chain of events that reverses their fortunes and leads to their downfall. In his treatise Poetics, Aristotle deemed hamartia to be necessary to create the optimal tragic hero and achieve catharsis. Ep 58Curse of Strahd 10: Valravn

E

According to Danish folklore, when a chieftain was killed in battle but never found, ravens would come and eat him. The ravens that ate the chieftain’s heart would gain human intelligence and supernatural powers. They would also become malicious and evil, leading wanderers astray. These ravens were known as "Valravn", "raven of the slain". Other accounts speak of the Valravn as a restless soul flying through the night as a raven. One tale tells of a Valravn that helps a maiden find her lost betrothed in return for the life of her firstborn. The maiden agrees and the Valravn flies off… returning years later when the couple has had their first child. It then asks the maiden if she has forgotten her promise, proceeding to rip in to the chest of the child and drinking the blood from its heart. According to the story the Valravn then turned in to a knight, presumably having been returned to its former life. Ep 57Western: The Baron of Barbary Coast, Part 3 of 3

E

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was the beginning of the end for the Barbary Coast. The district was heavily damaged by the quake and the subsequent fires. Reconstruction did happen and it did see a brief revival as a somewhat cleaned-up entertainment area. In 1913, and the fervor leading up to the prohibition of alcohol, the mayor of San Francisco, a man knows as "Sunny Jim", began a crusade against the moral decay that The Barbary Coast was the embodiment of. He was backed up by Randolph Hearst's news empire and there was little that could stop the crusade from succeeding. The last brothel closed in 1917. So ends the tale of the hive of scum and villainy that was The Barbary Coast. Adventure: The Baron of Barbary Coast, Western, Åskfågeln. Part 3 of 3. Ep 55Curse of Strahd 09: 4'33

E

Four minutes, thirty-three seconds is a composition by the American composer John Cage from 1952. The score instructs the performers not to play their instruments for the duration of the piece. It is effectively, four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence… But not complete silence. Because there is always the sound of the environment where the piece is performed. For Cage 4’33 epitomized his idea that any combination of sounds can be music.
