Ep 161To Ba'ator and Back 04: What Nightmares May (Yet) Come?

E

In the fourth installment of this classic Planescape adventure, our characters must wade through a river of blood… in this particular case: literally! And all on the blind hope that they will eventually be able to trade something of theirs for the information they need to escape the hellish plane of Baator… and that from a very dubious vendor indeed... But first, please enjoy Mattiaz’s dramatic reading of excerpts from his character background that was provided to each player prior to gameplay. And special thanks to Jenny Randle for voicing Shaaraxxis, called “Stormsong”! If you prefer to just jump forward to the actual-play action, please skip ahead to 10:30. Featuring the Planescape: Torment soundtrack, courtesy of Beamdog. Also using music by: Metatron Omega, Halgrath, Flowers for Bodysnatchers and Atrium Carceri. Used with permission from Cryo Chamber. Ep 159To Ba'ator and Back 03: In That Sleep of Death Lucid

E

In the third installment of this classic Planescape adventure, our characters begin to take in the full scope of the truly terrifying obstacles that lie ahead of them… and yet, the challenges of this literal hellscape may pale in comparison to the challenges that face each man’s personal journey… But first, please enjoy Hjalmar’s dramatic reading of excerpts from his character background that was provided to each player prior to gameplay. And special thanks to Jenny Randle for voicing Lady Maje Harkadies and Shaaraxxis, called “Stormsong”! If you prefer to just jump forward to the actual-play action, please skip ahead to 17:00. Ep 156B6 - The Veiled Society, with Fear of a Black Dragon

E

We had the amazing opportunity to play the classic Dungeons & Dragons module “B6 – The Veiled Society” from 1984, together with our friends at the Ennie-award winning old school RPG podcast ”Fear of Black Dragon”. The setting for the module is the city of Specularum in Mystara, where three powerful families are vying for power. Interestingly enough this is a hard-boiled detective story where the player characters have to solve a murder and avoid becoming victims of the scheming machinations of the three families. The adventure was written by David “Zeb” Cook who would later on create the amazing Planescape setting. There is a companion episode for this made by Fear of a Black Dragon where they analyze the module that you can listen to here https://www.gauntlet-rpg.com/fear-of-a-black-dragon/the-veiled-society Finally, music for this episode is provided by the amazing folks over at Heimat Der Katarstrophe, serving up only the finest Dungeon Synth for your enjoyment. Ep 152To Ba'ator and Back 01: Paradise Lost & Found

E

One of our absolute favorite settings for Dungeons & Dragons is undoubtedly Planescape. The twisting, dark streets of the city of Sigil, the beauty and weirdness of the multiverse and the horrors of the nine hells all come together in to a wonderful whole that has enchanted us since playing Planescape: Torment back in the nineties. Together with our friends at Adventure Hook and Blackspire Studios we have created this actual play of the classic Planescape adventure “To Ba’ator and Back” which is featured in the “Well of Worlds” module. We are playing AD&D 2nd edition and the adventure begins in Blackspire’s world Terregastia, where a manhunt is under way. Production has been done by the talented Robert Randle at Blackspire and you are in for a real treat over the coming seven weeks. One of the most exciting things about this project is that Beamdog have kindly given us permission to use the original soundtrack for Planescape: Torment. This is a true honor and really helps set the right tone. Thank you! We also used music by Metatron Omega, Halgrath, Flowers for Bodysnatchers and Atrium Carceri. As always huge thanks to Cryo Chamber for their kindness in allowing us to use their material. Ep 146D&D: The Styes, Part 1: City on the Water

E

Issue 121 of the very much missed "Dungeon Magazine" contained a fantastic adventure for D&D 3rd edition called "The Styes", that took place in a dark and dreary port town plagued by mysterious murders. On Tuesday the 21st of May the new D&D 5th edition module "Ghosts of Saltmarsh" will be released and The Styes is one of the many classic adventures that have been included. To celebrate this new launch we made our own conversion of the old adventure and ran it as a one-shot. Enjoy part one here and do check out Ghosts of Saltmarsh! Ep 140KULT: And the Rocket's Red Glare, with Rollspelsklubben

E

"The Trump campaign is getting ready to make its final push towards the White House. For months, he has been playing to the basest urges of the American populace: the need for more. More safety, more money, more guns, more of everything. His followers have been whipped into a frenzy, waiting to strike at the polls. The whole country is wound as tight as a fiddle-string, and that’s exactly the way Trump wants it. Maybe you needed the university credits. Maybe your parents supported his campaign and had an “in”. For whatever reason, you were one of the few chosen to intern in the executive half of the campaign, with Trump himself. It was stressful, and that’s what you expected. His smiles are a little too wide, his words are a little too rushed, and his running mate is a little too quiet. That’s all normal, right? It’s just stress. Stress will make you see things that aren’t there – especially on election night." We had the amazing privilege of recording the talented Jacqueline Bryk's new KULT: Divinity Lost scenario "And the Rocket's Red Glare", together with Isak Jansson from Sweden's largest actual play podcast "Rollspelsklubben" as a guest player. Joining us was also our dear friend Jenny Bremberg. The scenario is for sale in Helmgast's webshop here: https://webshop.helmgast.se/kult/and-the-rockets-red-glare-digital-pdf.html NOTE: This scenario is a work of fiction. All incidents and dialogue, and all characters with the exception of some well-known historical figures, are products of the scenarios creator and are not to be construed as real. Where real life historical figures appear, the situations, incidents, and dialogues concerning those persons are almost entirely fictional and are not intended to depict actual events or to change the entirely fictional nature of this story. Ep 139The Great Vilhaim Heist 01: The Dragon

E

Over the coming few weeks we will be playing the adventure "The Great Vilhaim Heist" for Scarred Lands, a setting for Dungeons & Dragons by Onyx Path Publishing. We are again joined by The Gentleman Gamer Matthew Dawkins who will be our Dungeon Master for this adventure. "Scarn. This world is not what it once was. Broken and battered, it was mauled in a great conflict that raged across its surface for years. The titans — primal beings, forces of nature that created and shaped Scarn — warred with their children, the gods, who had learned to draw power from the faith of lowly mortals wandering the face of Scarn. They clashed across the world, amassing armies using the creatures they created or who worshipped them. On one side were the “titanspawn,” twisted monsters and foul creatures loyal to the titans; on the other, the “divine races,” the mortals, banded together to aid the gods. Over time, the gods were successful and the titans subdued, but never destroyed. The gods are the sole rulers of Scarn now, fueled by the devout worship of their mortal followers. Yet though the war is over, the damage remains, and it is for this reason that Scarn is now known as the Scarred Lands. That great conflict, known as both the Divine War and the Titanswar, has been over for a century and a half, but the healing process has only just begun. Much of Scarn’s topography has been twisted and warped in unnatural ways. And the titans, though dormant, are not dead. Welcome... to Scarred Lands" Game: Scarred Lands, Onyx Path Publishing for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition Music by: Ager Sonus & Lesa Listvy, Cryo Chamber Web: https://www.redmoonroleplaying.com iTunes: http://apple.co/2wTNqHx Android: http://bit.ly/2vSvwZi Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/RedMoonRoleplaying RSS: http://www.redmoonroleplaying.com/podcast?format=rss Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/RedMoonRoleplaying

Ep 138Stormbringer, with The Grognard Files

E

We are very happy and pleased to bring you this special episode of Red Moon Roleplaying where we got to play Chaosium's Stormbringer RPG from 1981. The game is written by industry legends Ken St. Andre and Steve Perrin, and is based on Michael Moorcock's works about Elric of Melniboné, the albino sorcerer who wields the enchanted black blade named Stormbringer. A blade that feeds off of blood and souls. Gamemaster for this session was none other than Dirk the Dice from the excellent podcast The Grognard Files, a show that talk bobbins about table-top RPGs from back in the day and today. We are big fans and would definitely recommend you check the show out if you are interested in those magical games that built the hobby in the 80's. From the ashes of a destroyed civilization, a new one has risen. Cults, clans and tribes are fighting for dominance in a world that is being reborn. Apocalyptic sects raise fortresses in the landscape. Clans form new cities. Border towns rise from the settling asteroid dust. A whole people are on the move to harvest the artifacts of the lost generations. To rebuild earth in a new and glorious fashion. But in the shadows of the craters something is moving. A strange virus that was traveling underneath the icy shell of the asteroids has started infecting humanity‘s DNA. Ep 126Taroticum 04: Lee-Metford

E

It's been a few months ago since we checked in with our Patreon bonus campaign "Taroticum" for KULT: Divinity Lost. Having left you on a dreadful cliffhanger we thought it would be nice to give you closure to the prologue. We released the ninth episode of the campaign on the five dollar per month level on Patreon today so you can enjoy a nice KULT binge if you back us there. Your support allows us to spend more time on the show and really means a great deal to us! https://www.patreon.com/RedMoonRoleplaying TAROTICUM 04: LEE-METFORD The Lee-Metford rifle was a bolt-action rifle that replaced the aging breech-loaded Martini-Henry rifle as the British Army's service rifle in 1888. It was much faster than the Martini-Henry and the bolt's rotation was only 60 degrees compared to the 90 degrees of similar German and French rifles. It had one major drawback however and that was its reliance on the extremely smoky black powder as a propellant. The rifle was supposed to utilize cordite which is smokeless, but production delays made the makers of the rifle have to rely on black powder. In 1896 the Lee-Metford was phased out in favour of the Lee-Enfield rifle, which used smokeless powder and is still utilized to this day with units in especially the developing countries of the commonwealth. During World War 2 the Lee-Metford found itself converted in to an automatic rifle in New Zealand and Australia due to the lack of Bren and Lewis guns. The Lee-Metford remains in use by one unit today, the Atholl Highlanders in Scotland. Ep 122TERROR AT MAKE-OUT POINT 01: Denton, Alabama

E

Red Moon Roleplaying are proud to announce our campaign "TERROR AT MAKE-OUT POINT" for the Sci-Fi horror game "They Came From Beneath The Sea" from our friends at Onyx Path Publishing, with the game's creator The Gentleman Gamer, Matthew Dawkins as our Gamemaster / Director. This will be a short campaign before we begin our next big thing and will give you a chance to follow the misanthropic Dr. White, played by Craig, the high-flying B.C. Rosberg, played by Hjalmar, and the pinko-hunting Agent Faulkner, played by Mattiaz, as they unravel the mystery that is "TERROR AT MAKE-OUT POINT". The setting is a take on the 1950's Alabama that you can see in Sci-Fi monster movies from that era. While the game embraces humor and schlock, Matthew will be keeping the Red Moon formula intact by taking us down far darker paths and putting us against nightmarish Lovecraftian horrors beyond human imagination. This first session includes character creation and if you want to skip to the action you can find it at 01:47:18. "They Came From Beneath The Sea" is on Kickstarter until the 24th of January so you still have a chance to back the game here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/they-came-from-beneath-the-sea-a-tabletop-roleplay Campaign: “TERROR AT MAKE-OUT POINT”, They Came From Beneath The Sea, Onyx Path Publishing Music by: Cryo Chamber Collaborations "Cthulhu", "Yog-Sothoth", "Shub-Niggurath", "Azathoth" and "Nyarlathotep" Web: https://www.redmoonroleplaying.com iTunes: http://apple.co/2wTNqHx Android: http://bit.ly/2vSvwZi Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/RedMoonRoleplaying RSS: http://www.redmoonroleplaying.com/podcast?format=rss Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/RedMoonRoleplaying

Ep 119Curse of Strahd 41: Quietus

E

THIS IS THE FINAL EPISODE OF CURSE OF STRAHD In November of 1462 the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus had finally heard the requests of Vlad III Dracula to join him in his war against the Ottomans. He arrived in Transylvania to negotiate with Vlad, who had now lost his throne to his brother Radu, whom the Ottomans favored. After long negotiations Corvinus decided that Vlad was a liability he could not afford and had Vlad imprisoned in his palace in Visegrád. Fourteen years passed until he was mentioned in writing again. In 1476 Radu’s successor as prince of Wallachia, Basarab, was seen by the Hungarians as too friendly to the Ottomans. Corvinus decided to recognize Vlad as the lawful prince of Wallachia and together with Moldavian support Vlad’s Hungarian army invaded his homeland. In the end of 1476 Vlad was again crowned Prince of Wallachia. However, his reign would be short as Basarab returned with a large Ottoman army supporting him in early 1477. Vlad III Dracula met his end when his small army was vanquished by Basarab’s forces. Vlad’s corpse was supposedly cut in to pieces and his head was sent to Sultan Mehmed II. According to the stories Vlad III Dracula was buried in the monastery in Snagov. But when his supposed tomb was excavated in 1933, only horse bones were found within. Ep 118Curse of Strahd 40: The Impaler

E

In 1462 the prince of Wallachia, Vlad III Dracula, led an army against his Ottoman overlords. He declared that he was fighting for Christianity, the crown of Hungary and its wearer king Matthias Corvinus, and had “killed 23,884 Turks and Bulgarians” during his campaign. Corvinus did not come to his aid however and an Ottoman army, 150,000 strong, the largest since the conquest of Constantinople according to the historian Chalkokondyles, crossed the Danube on June 4th 1462. Vlad attempted to assassinate the Sultan in his camp but failed to reach the Sultan's tent, instead attacking the Vizier Mahmut Pasha. Retreating from the massive army Vlad employed scorched earth tactics. When the Ottomans entered the city of Târgoviște they were horrified to discover a "forest of the impaled". Chalkokondyles writes thus: "The sultan was seized with amazement and said that it was not possible to deprive of his country a man who had done such great deeds, who had such a diabolical understanding of how to govern his realm and its people. And he said that a man who had done such things was worth much. The rest of the Turks were dumbfounded when they saw the multitude of men on the stakes. There were infants too affixed to their mothers on the stakes, and birds had made their nests in their entrails." Ep 117The Island of the Dead 08: Babi Ngepet

E

This is the final episode of "The Island of the Dead". A big thank you to Robin Liljenberg, Jenny Bremberg and Helmgast for creating this with us! "According to myths on the island of Java there is black magic that a person can use to become rich instantly. The spell requires a sacrifice however, in this case ones humanity; allowing oneself to be possessed by a boar demon for a period of time. The boar demon will then roam around villages, rubbing its body against the huts and houses, making valuable belongings like gold and jewelry disappear. When the caster of the spell reverts to its human form it will find its robes filled with the stolen possessions. Because of this superstition it is common for Javanese villagers to kill any boars they find roaming around their settlement." Ep 115A taste of "Ask for the Moon"

E

With the year coming to a close we thought this would be a nice time to give you an opportunity to get to know us better. In our shows we generally stay in-character, which means that you get very few opportunities to learn about who we are as people. In our Patreon feed we have a Q&A show called "Ask for the Moon", in which we answer questions asked by our patrons. We have a lot of fun doing this and it hopefully also offers a view in to who we are and how we think. Here is an episode from November which we thought could be a nice teaser for what awaits over on Patreon. Ask for the Moon is available at the 1 dollar per month level and we release one episode every month. Head over to Patreon, help the show and help us make more of this lovely content. https://www.patreon.com/RedMoonRoleplaying

Ep 114Curse of Strahd 39: Dien Bien Phu

E

In March of 1954 France was at war with the Viet Minh independence movement in French Indochina. The first Indochina war had been going since 1946 and the French were planning to cut off Viet Minh supply lines going into Laos and tactically draw the Viet Minh in to a major confrontation to end the conflict once and for all. France opted to fight at a fortress they built at Dien Bien Phu, deep in the hills of northwestern Vietnam. The fortress would be resupplied by air as the French were convinced the Viet Minh possessed no anti-air capabilities. The Viet Minh swiftly moved to surround the French and positioned heavy artillery and anti-aircraft guns all around the fortress, having pushed these up the slopes of the mountains overlooking the French positions and dug tunnels through the mountain. On March 13th the Viet Minh opened fire upon the French positions and with the artillery spread out around the mountains the French could not mount any counter-battery fire. The French artillery commander committed suicide in desperation and while the French troops repulsed wave after wave of attacks by the Viet Minh they eventually ran out of supplies, the air drops being fewer and fewer as the Viet Minh anti-aircraft guns took out supply planes during every run. After a two month siege the French forces surrendered, the government resigned and France withdrew from Indochina, separating the country in two at the 17th parallel. One war ends... another one begins. Ep 113The Island of the Dead 06: Tonton Macoute

E

Having survived a coup d’etat attempt in 1958, the dictator of Haiti, Francois Duvalier, known as "Papa Doc", created a paramilitary force in 1959 to keep him safe from future coup attempts. They were called the "Cagoulards", the hooded men, and were authorized to do whatever necessary to suppress political opposition. They are behind an unknown number of murders, often with a machete, at other times stoning and burning people alive. They would frequently leave the corpse of their victims on display, anyone attempting to remove the body would find themselves “disappeared” soon as well. The force got the nickname “Tonton Macoute” after a mythological Haitian bogeyman. The Tonton Macoute was said to kidnap and punish unruly children during the night by snaring them in a gunny sack (Macoute in French) and carrying them off, eating them for breakfast. They reveled in this reputation and began wearing clothes inspired by Haitian Vodou to instill fear by alluding to having supernatural power. Perhaps the most stunning fact about the Tonton Macoute is a man called Luckner Cambronne, who led the force during the 60’s and 70’s. He was known as the “Vampire of the Carribean” as he would extort blood plasma from locals and sell it to American labs. He would also sell dead bodies to the US, buying them from local hospitals for 3 dollars apiece. When the hospitals ran out he would raid local funeral parlors.
