Making a group built for Instagram: How @WeAreWildStyle figured that out.
EThis week’s interview is a continuation from last week with Richard Vission. Wild Style is (are?) Richard’s tribute to the 80s dance genre freestyle. Think Exposé, Cover Girls, Trinere. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, look it up. But while the duo of Frankie and Sonja is definitely a throwback, there’s something very current about them at the same time. They’re sexy and playful and seem like they’re built for Instagram, and Richard’s production updates the freestyle sound with classic house influences that allow them to fit in on dance floors around the world. We have fun talking about flirting with boys, flirting with girls, and the rigors of not only trying to blow up but also to do something that’s meaningful for themselves. It’s a short interview, so take advantage of that. Don’t forget to leave us comments, reviews, and money. Or just money. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Secrets for building a career that lasts decades, c/o Richard Vission
EOur guest this week is Richard Vission. He’s a DJ, remixer, producer, label owner, club promoter. He’s host of Power Tools — the longest running dance music mix show in the country. He’s worked with megastars from Lady Gaga and Madonna to Major Lazer. And he’s made hits for multiple generations of dance artists — from Crystal Waters and Martha Wash in the 90s to Luciana and his latest discovery, the neo-freestyle duo Wild Style. Did we just coin a new genre? We think so. It might not surprise you, then, that our interview explores how Richard built a career that spans multiple decades, how he’s weathered the ups and downs and managed to stay engaged and energized. For one, you’ll learn that he’s in it because he loves the music and not for the trappings of success. You’ll also learn how he’s honed his craft and learned to accept and seek out feedback that helps him get better and better. Enjoy the shit out of this episode, or at least pretend like you did when you leave us a review on iTunes or comment on Soundcloud. http://j.mp/RebelRadioItunes The EDM.com Track of the Week is Nicky Genesis & Nina Sung - Dilate https://soundcloud.com/housemusic/nicky-genesis-dilate-ft-nina-sung If you enjoyed the music you heard on the episode, you can find those tracks here. Stretch and Bobbito, how the hood internet was their secret weapon
EThis week we come at you live and direct from the world Los Angeles premiere of Stretch and Bobbito: A Film About Radio That Changed Lives. It’s a short interview because we taped right before the film started, but they dropped some nuggets on us before the lights went down, and they promised to come back and do the full interview next time they’re in Los Angeles. If you don’t know, the Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito show was on the air from 1990-1998 on New York’s WKCR. Despite — or maybe because of — the show’s unusual airtime (1:00 - 5:00 AM), Stretch and Bobbito had an enormous impact on rap music around the world. They brought everyone who was anyone in East Coast rap at the time and featured freestyles and unreleased verses from folks like Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, Big L, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep… Outside of New York, the rest of us discovered the show from friends who sent cassette tapes around the world: The original hood internet, as Stretch says. In studio, they drop knowledge about why their show couldn’t happen today and why digging is so important for the development of culture. Stretch also talks about what it means to be a tastemaker and how he has continued to be one of hip hop’s most important DJs for over two decades. By the way, the movie is dope. Very very dope. Ookay on 3 Ways you get to the top? Hint: 'take action'
ETime for some action. That’s the word that comes to mind when I think about Ookay: action. Feels a little like dude came out of nowhere to build a fan base that hangs on his every photo and enjoys his antics like taking his dad to Winter Music Conference. You may or may not love his music (it’s noisy and feels very “of the moment” in both good and bad ways), but you definitely get the sense that he’s having fun doing his thing. He’s also managed to attract the attention of some major players in the game, like Steve Aoki and Borgore, and seems to be playing bigger and bigger stages. How does he do it? Our interview sheds some light on being in the moment and totally transparent with fans, as well as the determination that had him driving to LA from San Diego on a weekly basis to hang out with the Dim Mak crowd just to get his foot in the door. Instead of wishing he could get put on, he took action. Instead of hoping fans would notice, he took action. Oliver Wang on the science behind creative work for love as opposed to money.
EThis week’s guest is Oliver Wang, Author, Professor, and DJ. In this episode you will find snippets of music from A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC, and Blackstreet. And the EDM.com Track of the Week is Gallant – Weight in Gold: https://soundcloud.com/lavish/gallant-weight-in-gold What’s the time? It’s time to get smart. Oliver Wang is a Ph.D. That’s French for smarter than you. He’s also a DJ, which means he’s cooler than you. You’re just lucky he’s not taller than you. He wrote a book on a topic everyone in the world can relate to: Filipino mobile DJ crews in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1980s. Okay, so maybe Legions of Boom is a bit of a niche title, but it’s a great book about a short era in music history that would go on to have a huge impact on turntablism and hip hop on a global scale, launching the careers of Q-Bert — possibly the world’s most influential DJ — and Mixmaster Mike, who would go on to tour the world with the Beastie Boys. What’s more, he watched me on stage with breakdancing icon Crazy Legs when we were judging the 1995 DMC DJ Championship regional semi-finals. Ah, the glory! Professor Wang not only chronicles his tribulations as a record collector, he also helps us understand the science behind making music for love, not money. And he explains how he’s managed to get his bosses to pay him to teach impressionable young minds about hip hop. He also introduces me to the concept of “psychic income.” If you don’t already know what that means, you aren’t psychic. Listen to the episode to find out. Learn more about your ad choices. The Baka Boyz on dominating hip hop radio since the 90s
ECheck out this week's episode with The Baka Boyz. In this episode you will hear the EDM.COM track of the week from IshDARR - Sugar : https://soundcloud.com/lavish/ishdarr-sugar-prod-medasin And music from Rick James, Pet Shop Boys, Volume 10, Major Lazer, Outkast, Cypress Hill, and AC Slater. Nick V. says Josh Levine is guarded. He might be right. But next to him, everyone seems guarded. He’s the outgoing half of a brother-brother duo who has dominated the airwaves in Los Angeles and around the country for nearly two decades. After moving from nearby Bakersfield, the Vidal brothers changed the sound of LA radio, from the mix show to the morning drive. They introduced Tito — one of LA’s most beloved characters — and helped to discover Big Boy, who would go on to run the morning show for 18 years. Their new show, The Hip Hop Master Mix, is syndicated in over 30 markets. They’ve been important contributors to the Latin hip hop scene, collaborating with OG’s like Mellow Man Ace, ALT, and Lighter Shade of Brown. They also produced the hit single “Pistol Grip Pump” for Volume 10. Perhaps most impressively, they still talk to each other after all these years. Their secret: Stay in your lane. Nick does what he does; Eric does what he does. They also seek outside help from time to time. Learn more about their impressive career path, as well as adventures with Pitbull, MC Hammer, and more. Dave Nadelberg on building Mortified Nation into a nationally watched event
EImagine getting up in front of a room full of strangers and telling them your most private, most embarrassing secrets. You read from pages of your childhood diary, pages that don’t particularly make you look good. And then those strangers erupt in applause. You’ve not only made them laugh, you made them feel a little better about themselves, their flaws, and secrets. You’ve soothed their fears that they each may be the only weirdo in the room. Imagine doing this night after night, in city after city, and getting thousands of others to do the same thing. That’s what Dave Nadelberg does. He’s the leader of the Mortified Nation, who — in a series of live events around the country, on podcasts, and even on Netflix — are more than willing to spill their guts for your entertainment and catharsis. In our interview, we explore his journey from frustrated creative to reluctant folk hero, learning some important lessons along the way: - How he uses his community to keep him true to the brand - Where he draws the lines of political correctness - When to let Hollywood in, and when to keep it out I hope you’ll join us on this journey. DJ Adam 12: What I learned playing for Obama, Madonna, Prince, and Christina Aguilera
EWelcome to the 12th episode of Rebel Radio. Adam 12 sees people at their best, and at their worst. He sees them from the DJ booth, having the time of their lives on the dance floor, living their culture; and he sees them turnt up, twisted, too distracted by social media to really enjoy themselves. That’s what it’s like when you live behind the decks for multiple decades. Adam is Obama’s DJ after having DJed for Christina Aguilera, Prince, Madonna, and just about every hot party in Los Angeles. We did a party together where he consistently murdered, often making fools of DJs with much bigger names. He’s a hip hop kid, but also half of the dark wave band She Wants Revenge. His secrets to success: 1. Do what you love. Whether it’s photography or different styles of music, if it moves you, you have to explore it. 2. Put the phone down. His newest club night doesn’t allow photos at all, so celebrities can be themselves and everyone can be present. 3. If you don’t like the way it is, build your own thing. Frustration with the LA club scene led him to create his own party, which is not only fun for him but for his guests as well. Terry Heller on working for Eazy-E Straight Outta High School plus other crazy shiz
EThis week’s guest is Terry Heller. In this episode you will find snippets of music from The Pharcyde, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and WC. The EDM.com Track of the Week is Morris by King Mez: https://soundcloud.com/hip-hop/king-mez-morris Man, Terry Heller has seen some shit. As a teenager, he hung around with NWA. (His uncle Jerry was NWA’s infamous manager played by Paul Giammati in Straight Outta Compton.) Fresh out of high school Terry went to work for Eazy-E, finding talent like the group that would become the Black Eyed Peas and shooting videos for Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. After years as a successful music video director and real estate developer, Terry opened Plan Check — an updated spin on the all-American burger joint that quickly won lots of awards and has become a favorite of LA foodies. In this episode, Terry shares some NWA stories and insight into how he’s built his career. And it goes a little something like this: 1. Have no fear. He learned that by watching Eazy, maybe the most fearless person ever. There’s no limit on what you can accomplish if you believe you can. 2. Reinvent. When Plan A no longer worked for Terry, he didn’t sit around wishing it would change; he moved on to Plan B, and then to Plan Check (see what I did there?!). 3. Fake it ’til you make it. Terry uses his fear of being found a fraud to push himself to work harder. Is that what you do or do you let it slow you down? Any thoughts on the episode? Did you see Straight Outta Compton? Aaron Axelrod says hire him and let him do whatever the F he wants
EThis week’s guest is artist Aaron Axelrod. In this episode you will find snippets of music from Suga Free, Bob Dylan, Flying Lotus, and Wu-Tang Clan. The EDM.com Track of the Week is Dr. Fresch – Walk That Talk ft. Thewz https://soundcloud.com/thisisechelon/dr-fresch-walk-that-talk-ft Rebel Radio is now available on Dash Radio! Check us out every Thursday, 6 pm PST on the Hot Button channel. http://bit.ly/RebelDash Also find us on iTunes. Don’t forget to subscribe, comment, share, and leave us 5-star reviews. There are two things you should know about Aaron Axelrod: First, he says 'fuck' a lot. Second, he’s made a career out of doing whatever the fuck he wants. Aaron makes art — painting, sculpture, multi-media, all that good shit. He’s done art for the Dash Radio studios in Hollywood, for Coachella, for the City of Los Angeles, and a lot of others. His pitch: Hire me and let me do whatever the fuck I want. The best part? It works. In fact, it works a lot. And it's not just this ethos that has made Aaron such a desirable figure in the world of art; it's also his attention to detail, how he approaches a project once he's set to begin, and a style that's unlike anyone else in the design world. We talked to Aaron last week about his unique perspective on the super sought-after work-life balance (hint: there is no balance), the designer's creative process, and his number one reason why spending time in the desert makes him a better artist. Thee Mike B: 3 lessons you learn working with Snoop Dogg, DJ AM and Steve Aoki
EThis week’s guest is Thee Mike B. In this episode you will find snippets of music from NWA, Dr Dre, Daft Punk, and more. The EDM.com Track of the Week is Tiga - Bugatti (Tommy Trash Remix)https://soundcloud.com/edm/tiga-bugatti-tommy-trash-remix-edmcom-premiere. Don’t forget to follow, comment, and share. Mike B is a trip. He’s known as a DJ’s DJ, which means he’s a talented selector who can cross genres and command dance floors in a variety of environments. After apprenticing under hip hop mix show pioneer Stretch Armstrong of Stretch & Bobbito fame, he left the gritty New York scene and returned to his hometown of LA to launch one of the most influential events in nightlife history - Banana Split - with partners DJ AM (RIP) and Steve Aoki (Dim Mak Records). Mike as a personality comes off as a cross between a Serious Musician and The Fat Jew; at times earnest about the love for music that has driven him since before he was a teen, at others cavalier about his occasional quests for drugs and sex (boy does this man have stories!). Amid the reminiscing about his come-up, and about that one time when he was the DJ at my wedding, Mike gave us three valuable lessons that anyone embarking on a passion-based career should take seriously. These three lessons came from specific points in Mike's career - 'Be Fearless' learned while producing Snoop Dogg's reality TV show 'Fatherhood,' 'Work as hard as it takes' learned while dj'ing a world famous event he helped curate and create, and 'Find a need, then fill it,' learned while exploring the music scene of Paris and figuring ways to bring that style and energy to LA. Kira Soltanovich: Why is comedy like sex? Kira shares the joys of show business
EThis week's EDM.com Track of the Week is from Penthouse Penthouse. The track is "What You Sippin' On." https://soundcloud.com/lavish/penthouse-penthouse-what-u-sippin-on Let us know what you think of the song. Kira Soltanovich is hilarious. Good thing too because she's a comedian. Maybe you saw her on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (she played the “photo booth” for seven years), or maybe on Girls Behaving Badly. Or maybe you have never seen her at all. Listen to our conversation about how she pushed through after bombing consistently when she was getting started, how she finds inspiration everywhere she looks, and how she supports her friends, even though they don't always support her. KCRW's Garth Trinidad on managing side hustles and finding new music as LA's popular radio DJ
EThis week’s guest is KCRW's Garth Trinidad. In this episode you will find snippets of music from Thundercat, Isley Brothers, J. Dilla, and Eric B & Rakim. And the EDM.com Track of the Week is Patawawa - Back to Life (LBCK remix)by Ivory Oasis https://soundcloud.com/ivoryoasis/patawawa-back-to-life-lbck-remix. Garth has been a DJ on LA’s legendary KCRW independent radio station for over 18 years, helping to shape the city’s landscape of progressive music. His playlist blends an international mix of future soul, deep dance, indie rock, and jazz, and his show has won LA Weekly’s award for Best Radio Program multiple times. He helped to break some of the most important alternative artists of our time — Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Little Dragon, and he keeps on digging. We talk about the important mentors in Garth’s career, including American Idol judge Randy Jackson, and how he manages all of his side hustles: Music journalism (NPR, PBS, LA Canvas magazine), music supervision (Entourage), and most recently music production as half of the deep house duo Trinidad-Senolia. Gabriel Garzón-Montano on Drake and staying 100% authentic
EThis week’s guest is Gabriel Garzon-Montano. In this episode you will find snippets of music from Prince, Omar, and more. And the EDM.com Track of the Week is Elenne - King of Thebes https://soundcloud.com/edm/el-nne-king-of-thebes-edm-com. If you're just hearing the name Gabriel Garzón-Montano for the first time, you are late to the game. He's already done Rebel Red Bull Sound Select Artist, with Lenny Kravitz, and recently had his song “68" sampled by Drake on “Jungle." We got to sit down with him just after he killed at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles. We speak on early influences including his vocalist mother and legendary artist, Prince, and what it was like going from playing in front of 200 people to going on tour with Kravitz. He also tells us why he will never sell out his own values just to be culturally relevant. Hit play and peep game. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

AMG on how the rap game is all a show (but he had fun doing it!)
EThis week’s guest is AMG, the rapper. In this episode you will find snippets of music from DJ Quik, Eazy-E, Fila Fresh Crew, and New Edition. And our EDM.com Track of the Week is from TroyBoi: Do you ft. Armani White. Check out our EP 5: Playlist to hear all of the songs featured. In 1991, AMG released “Bitch Better Have My Money,” a furious combination of sexual energy, teenage bravado, and soul and hip hop samples that set dance floors on-fire across the country. With no video and no radio support, the song spent 50 consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts. The song’s title, recently appropriated by Rhianna for her own single, has remained part of the urban lexicon for more than two decades. Then, he lost the plot. He lost the fire. After a solid debut album, he made a follow-up that even he didn’t like, bounced back once in a short-lived partnership with DJ Quik, called The Fixxers, and has since taken his time to rediscover his passion and what really moves him to create. We talk about all of this, plus that one time when he was a guest at my wedding. Enjoy. And if you do enjoy, share. Marques Wyatt, godfather of deep house and a pioneer of LA's club scene
EThis week’s guest is Marques Wyatt. In this episode you will find snippets of music from Aerosmith, Loosid, FKA Twigs, Depeche Mode, and Jesse Saunders. Not only is Marques the godfather of LA’s deep house scene, his lineage traces directly to the great Frankie Knuckles, who mentored Marques after meeting him in a club in New York in the 1980s. From those auspicious beginnings, Marques went on to pioneer some of Los Angeles's most important clubs, including Brass, Does Your Mama Know, and most recently, Deep, exposing fans to groundbreaking acts such as Brand New Heavies, Louie Vega, and Jamiroquai. He’s a DJ’s DJ, a house music purist who integrates his love for yoga and his spiritual quest into his effort to move people on the dance floor. In our interview, we discuss the highs and lows of club promotion, the way house music has changed over the years, and meeting Paris Hilton. That’s the second Paris Hilton story on Rebel Radio, by the way! This dude has seen some major changes over the years, and has made it a mission in life to keep the integrity of the music he loves. At the same time, he has words for the haters: “What does it matter to you at the end of the day? That’s their choice. Tuxedo: Mayer Hawthorne says get your shit together and don't fly coach!
EEvery episode comes with snippets of old and new school tracks! Listen to sounds from Mayer Hawthorne, Detroit Swindle, Rae Sremmurd, Grandmaster Flash, + more. See playlist for more! Rebel Radio caught up with retro soul singer Mayer Hawthorne and producer Jake One, known together as the funk throwback Tuxedo. We found out how they balance jumping between different genres of music (Mayer: It literally keeps me sane) and why they wanted to collab after both working solo for so long. Jake says the best part is having “Somebody to tell you when you cross that fine line between keeping it G and Kenny G!” They break down indie labels vs. majors, what selling out means to them, and learning from other artists on tour, plus their go to DJ “get out of jail free” songs. “The music business is extremely unfortunately 99 percent business and one percent music. That is just the sad truth of it, but it’s the truth. Sometimes that is really hard to get around. Having fun is the key to everything." We also got some tips on stage fright, and Mayer’s wild record collecting habits. Oh, and if you happen to catch Mayer in the mood, he just might bake you one of his famous banana cream pies. DJ Nu-Mark provides an important lesson on why sticking to your creative craft is key
EDJ Nu-Mark began as a mobile DJ here in Los Angeles and has grown to be one of the most innovative DJs in music culture known worldwide. We sat down to talk about his career highs like ”What’s Golden” and his recent reunion with Jurassic 5 at Coachella after a seven year break. He also shared with us that he is putting out an album called "TradeMark" with Slim Kid Tre from The Pharcyde and working on his own interview show called Hot Plate where he interviews artists over dinner (dinner with Nu-Mark? Count us in!) Of course we asked him about his obsession with children's toys in his stage show and he let us in on a little secret that he's debuting a new group of them soon. Static Revenger says protect your brand and own your shit!
ECould working with Joe Jonas or Selena Gomez be a bad career move? Well, if you’re an artist whose core sound isn’t pop, it could mean taking a few years to get your career back on track. At least that was the case for our first Rebel Radio guest, Static Revenger aka Latroit. "I slapped my name on everything. I got pop associations and I sort of bought into all the money I was going to make... I could have had the greatest record you ever heard in the dance underground, but DJs were not going to respond to that. I couldn't get a promo opened from an underground DJ after that." Dennis White, best known as Static Revenger, and more recently as Latroit, has created tracks and remixes for everyone from Madonna to Steve Aoki and Swedish House Mafia and has sold over 3.5 million records including "Happy People," which was named a top-10 song of the decade, by Fatboy Slim. We sat down to talk about his career, the importance of separating your credited name and your musical sound, and why he comes to the defense of DJs like Paris Hilton.
