Such was the case for Elon Wilson, Natalie’s son, a former D.C. firefighter who spent almost two years in prison after a “pretextual” traffic stop, by then Officer Jonathan A. Freitag. Elon was released after it was discovered that Freitag lied about what happened and had a history of racially motivated stops. Laura also talks about a case that came across her desk where law enforcement had many intervention opportunities. Banaz Mahmod, a 20-year-old woman in South London went to police several times.Banaz asked the police for help. She told them she was ‘going to be the victim of an “honor killing”. On Wed, Dec 29th, a jury in a New York federal court found Ghislaine Maxwell guilty on five of six counts related to her role in Jeffrey Epstein's sexual abuse of minor girls between 1994 and 2004. Maxwell was found guilty of five federal charges: sex trafficking of a minor, transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and three related counts of conspiracy. She was acquitted on the charge of enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts. Maxwell, who now faces up to 65 years in prison, showed no reaction when the verdicts were read, though she did have a notable quote to the Judge, which we discuss.We at RCP, and Laura in particular, followed this case closely, and now that there is a verdict, we wanted to share our thoughts and expert analysis with our listeners. Today we talk about the tragic accident that took the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while working on the set of the movie “Rust” in New Mexico. Hutchins was accidentally shot during a scene rehearsal by actor Alec Baldwin who had been handed what he thought was a “cold” gun, which discharged as he was practicing drawing the weapon from his holster. To help us understand on-set gun safety protocol, and what should or should not have happened in this case, is Jon Barton, who is an Independent Weapons Expert and Professional Military Consultant for Film and Television. On August 12, 2021, Gabrielle Petito and Brian Laundrie were pulled over outside of Moab, Utah. The police officer, whose body cam was on, initially stopped their van for speeding and reckless driving. He realized Gabby was distraught and tried to establish what had happened and why Gabby was so upset. He was soon joined by another officer who had been responding to a possible domestic violence call in town where a witness said he saw a couple driving away in a white van, with a woman named Gabby. What happens next on the body cam footage is disturbing to watch. We interview former Sergeant Misty Carausu of the Dublin Police Department, who became instrumental in connecting the dots in Denise and Aaron’s case. While investigating a home robbery, assault and attempted kidnapping of a family in Dublin, California (40 miles away from Vallejo) , Sergeant Carausu became concerned that the suspect they had in custody for that crime might have committed other home invasions.
