Russell Brand has been known as many things over the past twenty years: outrageous stand up comedian, BBC shock jock, football blogger, provocative host of Big Brother UK spinoffs, author of several excruciatingly candid memoirs detailing his many addictions, Hollywood actor, ubiquitous guest on talk show circuits, host of award ceremonies and more recently podcaster of his own idiosyncratic autodidacticisms. Adding to that list according to the joint investigative journalism by Channel 4 Dispatches, the Times and The Sunday Times, is alleged serial rapist and sexual abuser. We finish our conversation with Cathy DeBuono, who talks about her near-miss experience with Victor Paleologus, the serial stalker, rapist, and murderer of Kristi Johnson. Cathy tells us how Paleologus approached her at the same Los Angeles mall where he would target Kristi Johnson four years later. She describes the eerily similar ploy he tried to get her to meet him at a Hollywood Hills location on the pretext of a job interview. Fortunately for Cathy, she walked away unharmed, but she never forgot that encounter and when she heard about Kristi’s murder she came forward and was a witness for the prosecution in his trial. We continue our conversation with Terry Hall and Kirk Johnson, who are extremely concerned that Victor Paleologus, the man who murdered their daughter Kristi, will be granted his freedom despite a rampant history of violent crimes against women. Weighing in also is Cathy DeBuono, a former actress, who had a near miss with this offender and has been involved with supporting the Justice For Kristi campaign. Laura warns about the dangers of not properly assessing an offender like this who is up for parole and what she thinks should be done before that hearing. On Feb 15th 2003, Kristi Johnson, a bright 21 year old college student, was approached at a mall in Los Angeles by convicted rapist Victor Paleologus. She had no way of knowing he was not who he said he was, no way of knowing he had seven previous convictions and had just been granted parole. All she knew was this affable, helpful seeming man who said he was a movie producer started talking to her about the entertainment industry and offered her an opportunity to apply for a job. Kristi aspired to be part of the entertainment industry, not as an actress, but maybe in PR, maybe in other capacities, she didn't know yet, she was still learning the landscape of Hollywood but she was eager to work hard. She couldn't have known that he had hunted and attacked many women before. Paleologus targeted Kristi, lured her to an abandoned location in the Hollywood Hills, killed her and disposed of her body in a ravine. Now twenty years later, this killer is up for parole. Laura & Jim continue their discussion with Andrea Dunlop, host of “Nobody Should Believe Me” who has strong criticisms about the documentary “Take Care of Maya” based on her own background with medical child abuse. Andrea casts doubts about Beate Kowalski’s behavior toward her daughter Maya, she has doubts about the doctors who treated Maya before her admittance to Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital…in addition to doubts on Jack Kowalski’s motives for suing the hospital who separated his daughter from her family. Jim and Laura explain what they see as the deep flaws in the investigation into Beate, and the assumptions about the family's behavior. Laura and Jim interview Andrea Dunlop host of "Nobody Should Believe Me" a podcast about Munchausen by Proxy (also now referred to as Factitious Disorder.) In the UK this is known as Fabricated or Induced illness (FII). Andrea is a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children’s Munchausen by Proxy committee and the co-founder of Munchausen Support, a resource site for victims. Andrea has been outspoken in her criticism of Beate Kowalski, the mom at the heart of the documentary "Take Care of Maya" who fought so hard to find a treatment for her 9 year old daughter Maya’s rare condition of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Laura and Jim discuss the evidence Andrea claims to support her position that Beate abused Maya. Many experts in CRPS treated Maya and confirmed her diagnosis time and time again, as did her own pediatrician Dr. John Wassenaar who submitted a detailed affidavit and who observed Maya before, during and after her release from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Despite this, Andrea still thinks Beate was most likely guilty of medical child abuse. What do you think? There is so much more to discuss about the Long Island Serial Killings and the evidence against the suspect who is in custody for the murders of Amber Costello, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy. In addition to the victims who were brutally murdered, there are other victims in the orbit of this case, if indeed Rex Heuermann is the killer. Asa Ellerup was married to Heuermann for 27 years. She has since filed for divorce but she and their two children are also caught up in his crime and their world has changed forever. Lisa asks Jim and Laura their expert opinions on where they think these victims were actually murdered, if they think the killer used an alternate private location before disposing of their bodies on and around Gilgo Beach Long Island. Today we give an update on the newly identified remains of a woman found near the Fire Island Beach area of Long Island, New York. News broke on Friday August 4th when DA Raymond Tierney called a press conference at very short notice to report that this woman, previously known to police as "Fire Island Jane Doe" had been positively identified as Karen Vergata. She is one of at least eighteen other victims murdered in the Gilgo Beach/Jones Beach/Fire Island vicinity. Karen went missing on Valentine’s Day in 1996, last seen in Manhattan which is at least sixty miles away from where some of her remains were discovered. Is she connected to Rex Heuermann, the suspect arrested on July 13th charged with the murders of Amber Costello, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy, three women who all went missing in 2009 and 2010 before their bodies were found along Gilgo Beach? For over a decade Long Island Police have been trying to solve what appeared to be the serial murders of several young women whose remains were found at Gilgo Beach. Finally just this past week, Architect Rex Heuermann, 59, was arrested at his Manhattan office and arraigned in the deaths of three women: Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello 27. Police are still investigating the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, as well as other victims who may also be connected to Heuermann. In this episode, we interview award-winning investigative journalist turned author Nicki Weisensee Egan about the latest updates regarding Bill Cosby, including six women who have filed civil suits against Cosby in New York City, one woman filed in New Jersey, another in California and a further nine women in Nevada. Nicki wrote the book 'Chasing Cosby' and hosted the podcast of the same name.To be clear, in 2018 Bill Cosby was found guilty in a criminal court of law for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home (three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault). He was sentenced to three to ten years. However, he was released after serving only two years in 2021. He was not exonerated. He was never acquitted. His release had everything to do with a bizarre pre-trial procedural interpretation that his lawyers were able to convince a Pennsylvania Supreme Court to agree with, something Jim weighs in on. Cosby’s PR team and attorneys constantly try to spin the narrative on this. Laura reads out a communication Nicki received from Cosby's PR person, (which also references Laura) and you won’t believe your ears on how he is desperately trying to re-write Cosby’s history of sexual assault allegations. In 2015, Emma Mannion, an 18 year old college student at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa was raped in a parking lot outside of a popular bar. What happened next is almost as shocking as the sexual assault. When Emma went to the police to report this crime, not only did they not believe her, but they arrested her for making a false report. According to the new Netflix documentary “Victim/Suspect” Emma’s case is not an isolated incident. Joining us today we are honored to have Hazel Thornton who served as a juror on Erik Menendez’ first trial in 1993. We have so many questions for her about what it was like to see all of the testimony and what conclusions she came to. To clarify both brothers, Erik and Lyle were tried, at the same time, for murdering their parents Kitty and Jose Menendez.  But each brother had their own separate jury, who all sat in the courtroom together (sometimes one jury would sit in the jury box while the other would sit in the gallery — and then they would switch). Sometimes one jury would be excused when the evidence did not pertain to their defendant. Each jury deliberated separately…and each jury resulted in a deadlock. Hazel takes us through her experience sitting for six months through the trial and the month long deliberation. There are high profile cases you think you know, but the truth is far more nuance, complicated and terrible than anything the media could ever cover during a headline making trial. On the evening of June 20th 1989, Lyle Menendez (21) and his brother Erik Menendez (18) shot their parents Kitty and Jose Menendez to death in their Beverly Hills home. Of that there is no dispute. On a hot summer night last July in a small town in east Texas, sisters Zi’Ariel Robinson-Oliver, 9, A’Miyah Hughes, 8, and Te’Mari Robinson-Oliver, 5, were reported missing by their babysitter. Their mother Shommaonique Oliver-Wickerson rushed home from work to find the Cass County Sheriff’s office, Texas Parks and Wildlife, volunteer firefighters, neighbors and family members searching the surrounding area for her little daughters. What happened next was every mother’s worst nightmare.At 2 AM the sisters were found dead in a pond on a neighboring private property, two hundred yards from their home. Officials allowed the family and community to believe the deaths were accidental drownings. Now nearly nine months later, the Cass County DA’s office is changing their tune and has stunningly announced that the autopsy reports indicate the girls were all strangled, possibly beaten and potentially sexually assaulted. Why has it taken so long to get the truth? What is being done to find the murderer of these precious girls? Just this past Friday March 10th, Zohreh Sadeghi, 33, a tech industry podcaster and her husband, Mohammad Milad Naseri, 35, were murdered in their home in Redmond, Washington by a man who stalked Zohreh after listening to her podcast.
