Preparation, Practice, and Patience

What does it take to achieve high accuracy long distance shooting? Well, Wisconsin, we asked the expert. Tom Stewart of American Defense Manufacturing joins us to discuss guns, shooting, hunting, and eating varmints. If you've ever wanted to learn how to shoot a target at 900+ yards, this one's for you. Across his multiple careers and throughout his life, Tom's developed a keen fondness for guns and a serious knack for accuracy shooting. On the latter, he's got the awards to prove his talent. As do his children! And Tom advocates that anyone, regardless of age or gender, can learn to shoot safely and accurately. All it takes is preparation, practice, and patience. Join us for a delightfully side-tracked Weekly Wisco exchange and stick around for an unexpected combo surf-and-turf recipe duo! Guest: Tom Stewart

Tasty, Tasty Trash Pandas!

Wisconsin, get ready for a TRULY Wisco episode. Two weeks ago, we talked with outdoor enthusiast and guide, Dan Timm. Dan shared how he'd recently attended the 98th Annual Delafield American Legion Coon Feed. What's that? So glad you asked! It's a yearly fundraiser for the Legion- Post 196- featuring auctions, raffles, and a whole lotta raccoon. Today, Commander Terry Frazier and his fellow Coon Feed organizer Nick Corgiat join us to share the history and legacy of this annual ode to the trash panda. For 98 years, The Delafield American Legion has been cooking up raccoons for their regulars and virgin cooners alike. Why? How? For what grand purpose? Well, one thing's for sure. We may call a raccoon a trash panda, but they turn into treasure in the capable hands of the Delafield American Legion. Mark your calendars for next year's 99th annual coon feed on Saturday, January 31st, 2026! Guests: Ellie Lawton-Smoller, Terry Frazier, Nick Corgiat

What It’s All About- the ABCs of the great Wisco outdoors

It can be intimidating to start a new hobby. Especially if you don't know anyone who has the connections, equipment, and know-how to get you started. When that hobby is hunting, it can feel extra obstructed. And that's where Raised in Wisco comes in! We've got the people, we've got the experience, and we can absolutely help you get into the great outdoors of Wisconsin to enjoy all that our amazing state offers. This episode embraces the desire to try something new. Join hosts Joel and Danielle with cheferee Ellie Lawton-Smoller and new– but we hope recurring– guest Dan Timm. Dan, a lifelong outdoor enthusiast found his way to a fulfilling career with Whale-Tales Archery where he can help people connect with their outdoor passions. This state offers so many incredible experiences. Whether it's hiking, kayaking, hunting, fishing, gathering, or trying a Wisconsin delicacy like raccoon, we encourage you to try it! Be Who You Wanna Be, For Real!

At long last, Danielle returns to the group! And thank goodness for that, we've been a little off track (do we ever really have one of those though?...) In addition, Shotgun Sarah Engel joins us, with Cheferee Ellie Lawton-Smoller rounding the ranks for the day. Sarah is the current President and a cofounder of Wisconsin's Women's Hunting and Sporting Association. WHSA is a movement focused on connecting women with each other and all of the incredible outdoor activities Wisconsin offers. Too many of us, especially women it seems, suffer from an "I can't be that good" mentality fed by the unrealistic standards of social media. It all leads to far too much hammering down of one another and not nearly enough building up. So if you're a Wisco Woman looking to get outside and involved with other incredible Wisco ladies, check out WHSA or email Sarah at [email protected] and tell 'em Raised in Wisco sent ya! Shut the Cluck Up!!!

Happy New Year, Wisconsin! We start off this new year of 2025 just like we finished t2024- talking about all the great things Wisconsin offers in her beautiful outdoors. A few days ago Joel, Danielle, and our friend Ellie Lawton-Smoller went turkey hunting. Now that's not surprising. But one thing was different- who secured the permission for them to hunt on the land, and who did the scouting. Usually, Joel takes care of these details. This time, Danielle did it all. All didn't go as expected- in fact it was nearly a clucking disaster! Nearly... Mike Kretschmer, friend of the show and frequent Joel-ribber, joins us. This time, he's not just here to tease our host but also to represent Ney's Premium Meats and Sweets, where he leads operations. Mike shares some tips for scoring the perfect cut of meat for any occasion and what to look for in terms of meat grading. Guests: Megan Salazar, Ellie Lawton-Smoller, Mike Kretschmer

Ibex, youbex, we all bex for Beceite Ibex!

Hey there, Wisconsin! Joel's back from Spain, but his voice might still be across the Atlantic. In addition to sampling local cuisine that gets us salivating, Joel went hunting. Because of course he did. He hunted a Beceite Ibex, a truly remarkable animal with majestic horns. And an animal not typically hunted for food in Spain- at least not for humans. That is, until Joel went and made the best damn enchiladas his guides had ever tasted with the meat from the animal he killed. Now just wait, Beceite Ibex is going to be a delicacy! Mike Kretschmer, friend of the show, joins us for boisterous conversation and plenty of laughs. Guest: Mike Kretschmer

Spain Edition!

We're all Raised in Wisco, but this week Joel is in Spain! Through the wonder of modern technology, we're able to record a show across the Atlantic Ocean. It should surprise no one that one of Joel's primary reasons for being in Spain is hunting. Joel enjoys traveling the world to experience the many unique hunting cultures this world offers. He shares how much he learns and the appreciation he brings back for the ways in which people interact with their environments. He also brings hats. Four of them in this episode alone. Even with Joel in Spain, we've got Weekly Wiscos to share! And stay tuned for a recipe that's wrapped in goodness. Guest: Ellie Lawton-Smoller

(Field to) table politics we can all agree on

Bee Frederick, governmental liaison for Safari Club International joins the Raised in Wisco team to talk non-partisan advocacy for hunting and fishing. Finding common ground is easy when the ground is a table and there is food on that table for everyone. That's a guiding principle of Raised in Wisco. We may not all be hunters or fishers. We may not all be outdoor enthusiasts. One thing we all share in common though: each of us eats. And most of us enjoy eating. Whether you enjoy the whole food process from obtaining ingredients and making a plan to cooking it to perfection or prefer someone else do the cooking, you probably like getting your grub on. Something else we can all agree on? Joel's recipes never fail to entertain and provoke a bit of uncontrollable drooling. This week, it's all about the sauce! Guest: Bee Frederick

Some people meet in coffeeshops. Others meet in the blinds.

Hunting isn't just a physical act. It more easily reduces to a social experience than to the act of potentially killing an animal. Jeff Prizl joins Joel, Danielle, and recurring guest Ellie Lawton-Smoller of First Hunt Foundation's Share the HERitage. Jeff is the deer program specialist at Wisconsin DNR. When you ask him to describe his job, he mentions the math involved in determining harvest number for the year. He'll also talk about learning the biology of the animals that we hunt. But the most important element of his job is to learn and engage with the social aspect of hunting. Joel, Danielle, and Ellie wrapped up a very successful turkey hunt immediately before recording this episode of Raised in Wisco. However, it didn't all go as planned... They did however secure plenty of turkey meat to make their TWO shared recipes of the week! You're gonna gobble 'em up! Guests: Ellie Lawton-Smoller, Jeff Pritzl

Tagged? Check. Bagged? Well, the season hasn’t started, hold on!

Wisconsin, in mere hours, it is going to be early goose and Teal duck season. Joel is quick to remind us however, that the hunting season has actually already begun- because SO much of hunting happens before you pull the trigger. It starts with building relationships with land owners and conservationists, scouting locations for future hunts, and obtaining gear and learning how to use it. All things that Producer Jess is now learning, as she prepares for her first ever hunt. With Joel and Danielle's help, Jess now has her first hunting tag (fall turkey) and is preparing- mentally and physically- for this new experience. Well, thank goodness we had a friend from First Hunt Foundation, Share the HERitage, Ellie Lawton-Smoller on to talk through some pre-hunt concerns! Also joining us today, hunting entrepreneur Jonny Baumann, creator of Tagged and Bagged, a specialized bagging system that protects hunted specimens for taxidermy. Taylor Fingers, game bird ecologist for Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, joins us this week to talk all things winged (and actually small non-winged mammals too). Getting Wild!

Today Joel and Mike are joined by special guest Luke Hilgerman from the Theodore Roosevelt Foundation, who shares profound insights on the escalating efforts to safeguard hunting and fishing rights amidst fierce opposition. The conversation explores the dichotomy between the organic food movement and the misconceptions surrounding traditional hunting practices, highlighting the ethical, health, and conservationist arguments that support sustainable harvesting of game.
