Wisco, today we end one chapter so that another may begin. Producer Jess- hi, that's me writing this podcast as I've written them all for the past 10 months!- is moving on. No, nothing dramatic, it's just time for a new adventure in healthcare! So today, we reflect. From our first meetings to my first hunting trip, we've come a long way. We were all raised in Wisco. And you know who else was? A gorilla named Samson. In 1981, Samson the gorilla, a beloved Milwaukee icon who inspired so many to pursue science and love animals, died. After his death, the Milwaukee Zoo and a strong segment of the public wanted his body preserved as a taxidermy mount. And a nearly equally vocal and impassioned group opposed the efforts. So his body sat and waited. By the time the public came around to wanting Samson immortalized in taxidermy form, it was no longer possible. Enter Wendy Christensen, a star taxidermist with the Milwaukee Public Museum since she was 19 years old. Although taxidermy was impossible, Wendy worked for a full year painstakingly crafting a life-size, world-award-winning artificial recreation of Samson that continues to educate new generations at MPM today. Wendy shares her story and experience learning about and memorializing Samson with us today. And don't worry- we'll have her back for more! Guest: Wendy Christensen

Tom Stewart of American Defense Manufacturing joins us to discuss guns, shooting, hunting, and eating varmints. If you've ever wanted to learn how to shoot a target at 900+ yards, this one's for you. Across his multiple careers and throughout his life, Tom's developed a keen fondness for guns and a serious knack for accuracy shooting. On the latter, he's got the awards to prove his talent. As do his children! And Tom advocates that anyone, regardless of age or gender, can learn to shoot safely and accurately. All it takes is preparation, practice, and patience. Wisconsin, get ready for a TRULY Wisco episode. Two weeks ago, we talked with outdoor enthusiast and guide, Dan Timm. Dan shared how he'd recently attended the 98th Annual Delafield American Legion Coon Feed. What's that? So glad you asked! It's a yearly fundraiser for the Legion- Post 196- featuring auctions, raffles, and a whole lotta raccoon. Today, Commander Terry Frazier and his fellow Coon Feed organizer Nick Corgiat join us to share the history and legacy of this annual ode to the trash panda. For 98 years, The Delafield American Legion has been cooking up raccoons for their regulars and virgin cooners alike. Why? How? For what grand purpose? Well, one thing's for sure. We may call a raccoon a trash panda, but they turn into treasure in the capable hands of the Delafield American Legion. Matt Johnson and Jeremy Walker join Joel and Danielle this week. Matt and Jeremy organize Gold Star Shoot, an annual charity event to support Gold Star families- those who have lost a family member to active duty military service. Finding common ground is easy when the ground is a table and there is food on that table for everyone. That's a guiding principle of Raised in Wisco. We may not all be hunters or fishers. We may not all be outdoor enthusiasts. One thing we all share in common though: each of us eats. And most of us enjoy eating. Whether you enjoy the whole food process from obtaining ingredients and making a plan to cooking it to perfection or prefer someone else do the cooking, you probably like getting your grub on. Hunting isn't just a physical act. It more easily reduces to a social experience than to the act of potentially killing an animal. Jeff Prizl joins Joel, Danielle, and recurring guest Ellie Lawton-Smoller of First Hunt Foundation's Share the HERitage. Jeff is the deer program specialist at Wisconsin DNR. When you ask him to describe his job, he mentions the math involved in determining harvest number for the year. He'll also talk about learning the biology of the animals that we hunt. But the most important element of his job is to learn and engage with the social aspect of hunting. Joel, Danielle, and Ellie wrapped up a very successful turkey hunt immediately before recording this episode of Raised in Wisco. However, it didn't all go as planned... And this season, Producer Jess will be going out for her first hunt with Joel and Danielle. Although Jess has not yet completed her Hunters' Safety licensure, she may legally hunt though Wisconsin's Mentored Hunting Program with Joel as her mentor. Side note- Joel organized to pass the bill that created this program during his time in the state Legislature. Wisconsin, in mere hours, it is going to be early goose and Teal duck season. Joel is quick to remind us however, that the hunting season has actually already begun- because SO much of hunting happens before you pull the trigger. Taylor Fingers, game bird ecologist for Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, joins us this week to talk all things winged (and actually small non-winged mammals too). As summer creeps on, we are fast approaching duck season, with turkey season right behind. To prepare, Wisco DNR is working hard to determine this year's bird populations, and therefore the length of the hunting seasons. And guess what? YOU can help them with that!
