S2 Ep 21Shared Rooms

Welcome to the final episode of the second season about the 2016 film Shared Rooms. This is a short film (75 minutes) about a group of gay men in Los Angeles starting on Christmas and ending on New Year's Eve. There are 3 seemingly separate stories that end up coming together in the final few minutes of the film. It is a fun and cute film, but it is also very fluffy and shallow. There is not a lot of emotional depth or character development. Which is not inherently awful, but is something to keep in mind. I enjoy watching this film every December because I like the fluffy stuff sometimes. After this episode, we will go on break until February 1, when we will come back with the book The Borrow a Boyfriend Club. S2 Ep 20Something Like..... Series

Welcome to today's episode of Queerly Popular! Today we are talking about the Something Like..... book series. It is a series of 9 novels and 3 books of short stories about a group of gay friends (or rather people who become friends) centered in Austin, Texas. Each book is told from a different character's perspective and we often get to see the same event through multiple characters' eyes across multiple books. It is an absolutely fascinating, if flawed, series of books. We do also discuss some of the flaws near the end of the podcast. Check out the complicated relationships with this picture and this one. Next week, we will talk about the movie Shared Rooms. After that, we will go on break until February 1, when we will come back with the book The Borrow a Boyfriend Club. The rest of the schedule will come out in early or mid-January on Instagram, Twitter, and Threads. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. S2 Ep 19Always the Almost

Welcome to this week's episode. We're talking about Always the Almost, a book about a trans pianist and how music and friends help him discover who he is and why music matters to him. This is a lovely book filled with queer and trans joy, heartache, self-discovery, friendship, and all the stuff that being a teenager entails. I cannot recommend the book highly enough. I do also read the author's note at the end because it does a beautiful job explaining why I love this book and why I choose the things I choose to talk about here (I know, not what he was actually talking about, but the reasons are shockingly similar). Our next two episodes will be the Something Like book series on November 30 and then the movie Shared Rooms on December 7. After that, we will take a break until coming back on February 1. I will be posting a schedule of the first part of season 3 in early January on Twitter, Instagram, and Threads. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. S2 Ep 18Geography Club

Welcome to this week's episode of Queerly Popular where we will be talking about the 2013 movie Geography Club. Geography Club is a fun (and relatively short) movie about a 16-year old boy, Russell, and his coming out of the closet. He finds acceptance and friends in a "geography club" that becomes a GSA. This is a fun and sweet movie, but is not outstanding in any particular way. I definitely enjoyed watching the movie, but I wouldn't rush out to watch it over and over. That said, I enjoyed that the movie had both Nikki Blonsky (Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray) and Alex Newell (Unique from Glee). That was fun. And there was eye candy in the form of Justin Deeley. Enjoy! As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. You can follow the podcast on Instagram, Twitter, or Threads (@queerlypopular). S2 Ep 17The Sky Blues

Today's episode is about the book The Sky Blues by Robbie Couch. Robbie has written a couple of other books and they are all delightful books and well worth reading. This book is abourt a boy in MIchigan who is openly gay and who decides to prompose to a popular straight guy. Things go off the rails before the promposal happens (read/listen for why). After everything goes sideways, Sky learns that he has an inner strength he doesn't know about and that he really can rely on his friends. He also inspires people because of his actions and ends up being promposed to by a character who you may or may not have seen coming. Our next episode will be about the movie Geography Club. S2 Ep 16I Wish You All the Best

Today's episode is about the 2019 book I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver. The book is about an 18-year old non-binary person named Ben who is kicked out of their parents' house and ends up living with the sister who abandoned them 10 years before. The book follows them through the second half of their senior year of high school as they pick up the pieces of their life and create a new one where they are safe and loved. It is an absolutely beautiful book and I highly encourage you to go read it. In addition to discussing the plot and characters of the book, I also discuss why I identify with Ben and a headcanon I have. I do want to warn you that I do screw up Ben's pronouns a few times. I'm not sure why it happens, and I apologize for that. The next episode will be about the book The Sky Blues. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. S2 Ep 15Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Welcome to today's episode about the movie Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Couple of things. First, this is a shorter episode than normal. I loved the movie, but I realized after I started talking that most of what I wanted to say, I said last week. So rather than repeat it, I added a couple of topics to this episode. I start off with the movie and my thoughts about it. Then I talk about my newly discovered love of audio books and why I love them. I also read a selection from Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World to give you a feel for the lovely, poetic use of language in the books. Then I end with a discussion about why I think we need to stop obsessing about "realism" in movies. I hope you enjoy this somewhat scattered episode. Our next episode will be about the book I Wish You All the Best. As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. S2 Ep 14Aristotle and Dante Books

Today's episode is about the books Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2012) and Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World (2021). These two books tell the story of how Aristotle "Ari" Mendoza and Dante Quintana meet, fall in love, and navigate a relationship together in El Paso, Texas in the late 1980s. The books deal with their coming out, their Mexican-American identity and Mexican heritage, homophobia, transphobia, and changing family dynamics. I personally found I much preferred the second book to the first one, but that is purely my opinion. Our next episode will be about the movie Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and will be out on September 21. S2 Ep 13Red, White, & Royal Blue Movie

Welcome to my review of Red, White, & Royal Blue (movie). I talked about the book in an earlier episode which you can listen to if you want. This episode is almost as long as the last episode about Heartstopper, but I am sure you will enjoy every minute of it. In this episode we talk about a couple things I needed to add to the Heartstopper episode, why we should love what we love, delve a little into the online drama of straight (or presumed straight) actors playing queer characters, differences between the movie and the book, how I would structure a limited series based on the book, a review of the movie, and a little bit about the music. Articles: Stop apologizing for enjoying romantic comedies The Rise of the Phenomenon That Is Red, White & Royal Blue 'Red, White & Royal Blue' Is No. 1 Worldwide on Prime Video, Sparks 'Huge Surge' of New Subscribers Here are some great scenes from the movie: The Cornetto Scene- This was deleted. S2 Ep 12Heartstopper Season 2

This week we are going to dive deep into Heartstopper Season 2. Two warnings: This is all spoilers. If you haven't seen the season and don't want to be spoiled, watch the season first and then come back and listen. This is a very long episode, almost 90 minutes. I try not to go over an hour if possible, but this one just had so much going on that I had to go longer. In this episode, we will dive deep into season 2. We examine the couples and their dynamics (particularly Nick and Charlie). I also talk a lot about Ben, why he had to be in this season, and why he was so important to Charlie's story. I also spend time talking about Isaac and his asexuality storyline and why that is so important to see. We end with talking about minor characters and my hopes for future seasons. I really hope you enjoy this episode, even if it is much longer than anything else I've done. Don't worry, it isn't setting a precedent for episode lengths or anything. I also wrote a review of the season the day after the season aired. It has a lot of the same points, but there are differences, so if you're interested, there it is. S2 Ep 11Boyfriend Material and Husband Material

Today, we talk about Alexis Hall's books Boyfriend Material and Husband Material. They are a queer romances where two very different men pretend to date each other and it turns into something real and then they decide to get married and all the wacky hijinks that ensue. I really love these books and encourage you to go read them if you like romances. A lot of it is follows romantic tropes, but there are a few twists that I didn't see coming and quite enjoyed. Our next episode will be about Heartstopper Season 2 and will be on August 10th. S2 Ep 10The Prom

Today's episode is about the 2020 Netflix film The Prom which is based off of a musical, which is based off of a real life event. It's a lovely, lovely film that I really love and enjoy about the trauma a young lesbian undergoes at the hands of homophobes and "allies" who don't really care about the person they are trying to help. Except for one thing that I will go on a bit of a rant about (10-15 minute long, so longer than a bit, I guess). I have seen this movie several times and would really encourage you to watch it if you have the chance. Here are a few of my favorite songs: Unruly Heart Zazz It's Time to Dance It's Not About Me And here is the link to the Glamour article about Red, White, & Royal Blue. S2 Ep 9Dear Evan Hansen

Today we are doing something a little different and talking about Dear Evan Hansen the movie and the book. I talk about the book because the book has some added material that sheds some light on some of the events of the story. I talk about why I prefer certain things from the musical or the movie and why, a problem I have with the movie, a problem I have with a lot of fans of the show unfairly vilifying Evan, why this story resonates with me, the queer subtext of the story, and why I thought the movie had a queer relationship after hearing the music but not knowing the plot. I hope you enjoy. Here are a couple of things related to Dear Evan Hansen to enjoy: Jordan Doww's cover of "Waving Through a WIndow" Some Thoughts about Dear Evan Hansen (from my movie blog) "You Will Be Found" (from the Broadway soundtrack) (THE BEST VERSION!- MV) "A Little Closer" "Disappear" As always, please rate and review the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. Hey all, I lost my voice over the weekend (sounded like someone who inhaled a ton of helium and was speaking very softly) and it is still rough. I'm gonna try and record my Dear Evan Hansen episode tonight or tomorrow, but there is no guarantee it will happen. Just depends on how my voice holds up. Thank you for your understanding.

S2 Ep 8Pose

This week, we'll be talking about Pose, a series in FX about ballroom culture in NYC in the 80s and 90s and the lives of queer and trans people who were a part of that culture. This episode is heavy on talk about characters because the characters are the backbone of the show and they have rich and interesting lives. I also talk about my favorite scenes (see the links below) and why having three main characters who were white in the first season was a mistake. Our next episode will be about Dear Evan Hansen (the movie and the book, not the Broadway play) and how its themes resonate with me as a queer person. Favorite scene- Blanca lip syncs the National Anthem (Whitney Houston) Second favorite scene- Elektra reads a transphobe for filth Third favorite scene- Angel and Papi's wedding (part of it, but this is the best part IMNSHO) Fourth favorite scene- Blanca and Pray Tell lip sync "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" Bonus video- Elektra's best reads for filth Bonus video #2- Blanca and Pray Tell sing "Home" (first season) If you're enjoying this podcast, please rate, like, and review. S2 Ep 7Into the Lion's Den

E

Today's episode is about the 2011 movie, Into the Lion's Den. It is an independent suspense/thriller movie about a trio of gay friends who end up at a redneck bar. By the time it is over, there is death, nudity (most of which it totally gratuitous), and some disturbing scenes. Warning, there is sexual assault in the movie. I talk about the sexual assaults and use the word "penis" many, many times in a short period of time. If either bothers or triggers you, please take care. I also talk about why so many queer movies have so much more sex, nudity, and language than other films. This includes talk about the film rating system, standards & practices, and how independently produced films differ from more mainstream films. I also talk about some pop culture news that has come up recently. MPAA Film Rating System Standards & Practices In our next episode, we will talk about the show Pose. As I mention in the episode, there will be new episodes through the end of June. After that I will be taking off the month of July and plan to come back in early August with new episodes. S2 Ep 6Longhorns

E

Today, we talk about the 2011 movie Longhorns. This is a shorter episode for a short (75 minutes) movie that was light on plot, but heavy on nudity. All 5 male main characters had full frontal shots during the movie and there was a good amount of sex. Just know that going in. If language or nudity bothers you, don't watch the movie. Want a hilarious synopsis? Here's a great one from IMDB: "Beers, steers...and a couple of queers. The Eighties come roaring back in this risqué and sexy comedy involving a group of Texas frat-boys, a remote cabin in the Hill Country and lots of beers, that will give "ride 'em cowboy" a whole new meaning!" If you want an excuse to just chill out or watch a movie, this is a great movie to just chill with. My favorite? Nope, but it is fun. S2 Ep 5Last Herald-Mage and Valdemar

In today's episode, we are talking about the Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey. This series consists of (as of this writing) 37 books, 17 anthologies, and 1 Companion (basically an encyclopedia) book that talk about the history of the world of Velgarth focusing mainly on the nation of Valdemar. There's obviously a whole lot to talk about in this episode, so I do my best to hit mostly high points. The Last Herald-Mage trilogy came out in 1989, 1990, and 1991 and has a gay main character, Vanyel Ashkevron. It is about his growing up, coming into his magical and mental powers, and his death. It is really impressive that it came out at the time it did, because the late 80s and early 90s were not queer friendly times, to say the least. The rest of the Valdemar books also had many queer characters, almost exclusively related to sexual orientation. There is a group who are made asexual due to an oath to their Goddess and there are some gender non-conforming characters as well. There is one character who is sorta trans and does not get treated well (they are a villain too, it's complicated). But for the most part, Lackey treats queer characters well. I hope you take the time to read these books because they are well worth your time and effort. Timeline of Events in the Books Valdemar Wiki Our next episode will be about the show Pose. S2 Ep 4Beach Rats

In today's episode, we talk about the 2017 movie Beach Rats. Disclaimer going in: this is not one of my favorite movies. I don't dislike it, but I do have some not so great feelings about it particularly about the ending and how hyper realistic the movie is. I do think it is worth talking about (hence the episode), but I will not be returning to watch it over and over again. Beach Rats is a film about a young man from Brooklyn who grows up in a hyper-masculine environment, yet experiences sexual attraction to other men and how he deals with this and segments his life. It won several awards in 2017 and 2018 and has generally been well-received by audiences and critics. On April 6, we will be talking about the Last Herald-Mage Trilogy as well as the world of Valdemar in general. It will probably be on the longer side due to the amount of stuff there is to discuss. S2 Ep 3Were the World Mine

Today we are talking about the 2008 film Were the World Mine. It's a really cute romantic musical comedy based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. And it isn't at all subtle about it, after all a big part of the movie is the play being put on in a school. It's a fun movie, but there is a big problematic portion related to people's consent being taken away. Tune in to hear more. If you've been enjoying the podcast, please remember to rate and review on whatever platform you listen to the show on. I would also love to hear from you with any ideas or comments you may have. S2 Ep 2The Thing About Harry

Today's episode is about the 2020 film, "The Thing About Harry". It was made for the Freeform channel and is about 2 guys who circle in each other's orbits for years before finally dating. It's lots of fun and really cute. It stars Jake Borelli as Sam and Niko Terho as Harry. Like Love, Simon, I have seen this movie many, many times and love it dearly. However, it does have a big problem when it comes to defining pansexuality, particularly when comparing pansexuality and bisexuality. So in the episode, we tackle this issue and take a deep dive into the characters of Harry and Sam. We also talk about some of the awesome scenes in the movie. Check out some of the clips and trailers below: Harry tells Sam he loves him at Stacia's wedding- https://youtu.be/5od8g_G5FRo Trailer #2- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLjWY8SI7z8 The Pride party- https://youtu.be/oPmAcDrPJ2c Harry trying to avoid the dancers- https://youtu.be/1V2dHZaVquU The speech after this and the final scene- https://youtu.be/YpT4MZbyytU You can buy the movie on Youtube, just look for it. S2 Ep 1Love Simon

Today we talk about the 2018 hit, Love Simon. The movie was based off of the book Simon vs. the Homo Sapien's Agenda by Becky Albertalli. I talk about seeing this movie 14 times in movie theaters and a total of almost 70 times since it came out. I also talk about why I love this movie, look at (and reenact) a few scenes (see the links below for those and more!), and some of the more problematic aspects of this movie. I also talk about how a very common criticism of this movie actually shows how well this movie did the job it was intended to do! Simon Coming Out to His Family Deleted Scene of Simon and Nick Going to a Club The Cafeteria Scene "You Get to Exhale Now, Simon." (This one makes me tear up every time!) S1 Ep 14Shelter

Welcome to the final episode of the first season of Queerly Popular! Today, we are going to talk about the 2007 film Shelter, a film which won many awards at various festivals. This is in my top three queer movies of all time along with Love, Simon and The Thing About Harry. Although it is an independent film like Defying Gravity, the production values, acting, and dialogue are so much better (probably because they had more money too!). I cannot recommend this film highly enough. If you haven't seen it, you should see it as soon as you can. The podcast will be back on Thursday, February 9th with an episode about Love, Simon. I cannot wait to talk about this movie. In the meantime, please share this podcast with your friends, follow us on Twitter or Instagram (@queerlypopular), and send any questions or comments to [email protected]. Until February 9th then y'all! Have a wonderful new year!

S1 Ep 13Defying Gravity

E

No, not the song from Wicked! I am talking about the 1997 independent film of the same name. It was one of the first pieces of queer media that I ever watched and holds deep meaning for me because of that. The movie is low budget, the script isn't the best, and the actors are new, but for all that, it has a big heart and a lovely message about making things better if you really, really screw up. It's probably hard to find (I've owned the DVD for years!), but I do think it is worth watching if you have the time and don't mind a low budget movie. I also talk about why I am making this podcast. There is actually a reason behind it and why queer pop culture is so important to me. There is no language in this, but I do talk about some sexual themes, so the episode will be marked explicit. Next week, we'll review the movie Shelter for the season finale. After that, we'll be back in February with more episodes to enjoy! If you are enjoying the podcast, please like and share. S1 Ep 11Queer as Folk

E

Today, we are talking about the show Queer as Folk, which was on Showtime from 2000-2005. It was a groundbreaking show that also had many problematic aspects including a lack of representation in terms of race, gender identity, and socioeconomically; a relationship between an adult and an underage boy (he was 17, so not a child, but still!); and biphobia. Despite its problems, it truly was a groundbreaking show that many shows are indebted to. It showed that there is a market for shows with queer main characters and that queer characters on TV don't have to be sexless or the butt of jokes to be popular. I started watching this show right around the time I came out, so it will always be a big part of my story because of that. It was also the first show where I saw queer characters who felt real. This show is marked explicit. Like the last episode marked explicit, there is nothing pornographic, but there is extensive talk about sex scenes and some personal stories as well. If you have any questions or comments, please email [email protected]. You can follow the podcast on Twitter or Instagram (@queerlypopular). S1 Ep 10Red, White, & Royal Blue

Today, we are going to talk about the book Red, White, & Royal Blue, a 2019 romance novel which uses the enemies to lovers trope. It is a story about the First Son of the United States and and English Prince (not Crown Prince though) falling in love and the various travails and issues that follow. They have finished filming the movie for release on Amazon Prime in 2023 (summer, I believe). As always, if you enjoy this show, please rate and review on whatever platform you listen to it on. S1 Ep 9Heartstopper Controversaries

E

In this special episode, I talk (ok, rant) about the bullying of Joe and Kit that has taken place recently that forced Kit to out himself as bisexual and that drove Joe to deactivate his Twitter account temporarily. Warning: I am really pissed off and use some definitely NSFW language (mainly f-bombs and using a euphemism for excrement). If that offends you, skip this episode because I ain't gonna censor myself, not about this. Next week, we'll be back to talk about Red, White, & Royal Blue. S1 Ep 9Latter Days

And here we go with what is one of my favorite movies. This movie was a huge part of my coming out story as a "there but for the grace of God go I" comparison. I love this 2003 movie because it gave me hope for my future when I was worried about what it meant to be queer and religious. This is a fairly heavy episode because I do talk about religious trauma and because suicide does come up as a part of the movie. If either of these are triggers for you, please listen with care. As always, feel free to reach out to me with questions or comments. You can email [email protected] or follow the podcast on Twitter or Instagram (@queerlypopular). Please feel free to DM me if you need to talk. I will always listen. There is also a little swearing in the episode. If you need someone with training to talk to, you can go to the Trevor Projects' website or call 1-866-468-7386. Above all, please know that I believe, and believe with all my heart, that you are a child of God and that She Loves you exactly as you are. And I love you too. Here are some vidoes and songs I mentioned in the episode: Song- Man on a Mission Song- Hymn for Those Left Behind Song- Abide With Me Song/Scene- Tuesday 3 AM Song/Scene- Another Beautiful Day Scene- Aaron Returns to LA Scene- Aaron and Lila Outside the Hospital Scene- Aaron and Christian Outside the Airport Scene- Aaron and Christian's First Kiss Our next episode will be about Red, White, and Royal Blue. Until then! Podcast theme music by Transistor.fm. Learn how to start a podcast here.

S1 Ep 8Heartstopper Interview with Special Guest Elvis

I am so excited to have this for you! This is an interview I had with a singer/songwriter/Heartstopper fan named Elvis. I found out about him when he was releasing short versions of songs about each of the chartacters on Instagram and then discovered he had other songs on Spotify. We have a lot of fun talking about how he found out about Heartstopper, bonding over Elite (he is so coming back for another discussion!), talking about how he writes songs, what his favorite song that he's written, and so much more. This is almost 70 minutes, but I am sure you'll enjoy it just as much as the two of us did! The music from before the interview is a clip from his song "Nick & Charlie (Happy Version)". Go here to listen to the rest of the song or here to hear the whole album! You can find Elvis on YouTube or Instagram (@elvisjss). All of his music is on Spotify and I highly encourage you to check out his other songs too! As always, if you have any questions, you can send me an email [email protected]. You can also find the podcast on Twitter or Instagram (@queerlypopular). Also, please share, rate, and review. Next time, we will talk about Latter Days. I know I said something else on the podcast, but I misread my calendar. My bad! Until then, enjoy! Podcast theme music by Transistor.fm. Learn how to start a podcast here.

S1 Ep 6Heartstopper

Today we have our first of three episodes about the Netflix show Heartstopper. Based off a graphic novel, it is the story of Nick and Charlie that tells how they meet and fall in love. Today I talk about what I love about the show (which is most of it!), what I don't love (how Tao ignores what Charlie needs and Elle's outing of Narlie), and some other thoughts. This really is my favorite show, so I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I loved making it. Oh, and listen for the Princess Diaries reference.... Here are some links to things I've written about Heartstopper. This is a piece I wrote about the names of the Heartstopper episodes. Here is my review of the first season. And here is an open letter I wrote to Netflix to ask them to renew Heartstopper. Next week, the show will be a conversation with Brian G. Murphy and Pastor Kari Parsons about the show. Two weeks after that, I am really excited to have a special guest on the show who has done some wonderful artistic things related to Heartstopper. Because of this special episode, every other episode will be pushed back one week and the last episode will be on December 22nd not December 8th. As always, if you would like to contact me, please email [email protected]. You can also follow the podcast on Twitter or Instagram (@queerlypopular). Podcast theme music by Transistor.fm.
